- Description: Molecular thin films of manganese (SAM-2), iron (SAM-3), and cobalt (SAM-4) phthalocyanine complexes, non-peripherally tetra-substituted with benzylmercapto, were formed on polycrystalline gold disc electrode by self-assembly technique. Surface characteristics of the films were interrogated by cyclic voltammetry. Significant passivation of voltammetry processes associated with bare gold surface (gold oxidation and underpotential deposition of copper) confirmed formation of the films. Electrocatalytic property of the films was evidenced from better voltammetry responses (less positive oxidation potential and better current signal) of the insecticide, carbofuran, on these films, relative to that on bare gold electrode. In terms of less positive oxidation potential, the FePc derivative (3) gave the best response, while the best current signal was observed on SAM-2-modified gold electrode. The average heterogeneous rate constant, k, for the oxidation of carbofuran was 3.6 × 10−2 cm s−1 on the SAM film with the best current signal (SAM-2).

- Description: The commercial exploitation of tropical timber is the key economic sector in the Solomon Islands. However, despite several decades of continuous large-scale logging, few efforts have been sustained at a regional level for reforestation of resulting degraded lands. Reforestation efforts have been limited to small, local and independent initiatives, with no movement on a regional or national level. In the past decade, however, the Christian Fellowship Church (CFC), a religious group in the Western Solomon Islands, has initiated a regional reforestation program in its member communities—a movement that has accelerated quickly and successfully. We use interviews and open-ended discussions with villagers and village leaders to explore how CFC has undertaken an apparently effective, large-scale reforestation project where the government, corporate logging companies, or localized kin groups have not. Results from the interviews reveal a diverse gamut of drivers, incentives, investments, and expectations for reforestation. Although respect of the power of the leader of the CFC was the most commonly cited reason for enrolling in reforestation, promises of income and land were also important in the success and widespread participation in the program. However, as this paper reveals, the significant time investment on a community level and by individual households, the growing expectation of financial return, and the distribution of land among community members for forestry, all will likely lead to unforeseen tensions in land tenure and resource ownership. Still, this reforestation initiative is a rare example of reforestation on customary land in Solomon Islands and one of the first models of a long-term, grassroots, religion-inspired community forestry effort in the Pacific.

- Description: Abstract text The study investigated the factors that lead to the high failure rate of grade 12 learners of the two high schools in the Ngqeleni area of Libode Mega District of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The study was qualitative in nature; therefore interviews were used as the method of collecting data. Seven SMT members, four parents and four learners were, randomly selected from the two schools in the Ngqeleni area of Libode Mega District. The researcher randomly selected the participants then interviewed them. The researcher used a video recoder as an instrument to record the responses from the participants. To analyse data, the researcher transcribed the interview responses and interpreted them. The main findings of the study showed that the high failure rate was caused by the following factors: over-croweded classes, shortage of teaching and learnin~ materials, lack of parental involvement, teachers' low morale, poor learner discipline, teachers experiencing problems in implementing government policies, work-load and as such teaching becoming stressful. The researcher in his study therefore recommends that the Department of Education plans more workshops for schools to capacitate them. - Description: Abstract text The study investigated the factors that lead to the high failure rate of grade 12 learners of the two high schools in the Ngqeleni area of Libode Mega District of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The study was qualitative in nature; therefore interviews were used as the method of collecting data. Seven SMT members, four parents and four learners were, randomly selected from the two schools in the Ngqeleni area of Libode Mega District. The researcher randomly selected the participants then interviewed them. The researcher used a video recoder as an instrument to record the responses from the participants. - Description: Located within the discipline of Performance Studies, this thesis seeks to validate performance and theatre, specifically dance theatre, as legitimate fields of research and enquiry that can enrich the polemics surrounding discourse, representation, the body and identity. Within this thesis I explore and analyse the creative processes and performance strategies used in two dance theatres works: Acty Tang’s Chaste (2007) and my own work entitled Displayed and Framed (2008) and how these strategies support the staging of alternative sexualities. I argue that the staging of alternative sexualities calls for an alternative approach to the performance strategies utilised in the production of space, the representations of the body and the use of text in both works. Each work offers a particular exploration of gender and sexuality in the attempt to represent alternative identities, alternative bodies and alternative sexualities. In this thesis I identify the endeavour to stage ‘otherness’ as a feminist endeavour and thus identify the performance strategies utilised in each work as feminist performance strategies. Through my analysis I wish to highlight the ways in which a feminist approach can contribute to and enrich both the staging of and understanding of alternative sexualities. In both Chaste (2007) and Displayed and Framed (2008), the choreographers of each work are also performers in their own work in an endeavour to explore and represent their own identity. The analysis of my own work requires that I play the multiple roles of choreographer, performer and researcher. In this analysis I provide accounts of my own experiences, processes and struggles of creating Displayed and Framed (2008) which are analysed in conjunction with my readings of Chaste (2007) and Tang’s personal experiences in creating the work. Thus this thesis explores the value of reflection and self reflectivity in the processes of creating performance.

- Description: An optimal extraction method for the removal of templates from molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) is presented. The extraction method is based on pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE). PHWE was evaluated by application to three distinctly colored MIPs for chlorophyll (green), quercetin (yellow) and phthalocynine (dark blue) with subsequent monitoring of template removal and template bleeding by an ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The templates were washed-off and the extraction efficiency (EE) was compared to that of soxhlet and ultrasonic extraction methods. PHWE employed hot water at an optimal temperature of 220 °C, pressure of 50 bars and flow rate of 2 mL min−1 to thoroughly wash-off the respective templates from their MIPs. The EE evaluated for PHWE was over 99.6% for all the MIPs with no subsequent or minimal template bleeding (more than 0.01%). The washing procedure was simple and relatively fast as it was achieved in 70 min at the most. At 95% confidence level (n = 3), soxhlet and ultrasonic recorded EE that was not significantly different (more than 94.5% in all cases) from that of PHWE (less than 99.6% in all cases). Soxhlet and ultrasonic had washing procedures that were slower (over 18 h) and employed large quantities (400 mL) of organic solvents modified with acids. The percentage relative standard deviations (%RSD) for the EE and recovery results were less than 2.3% in all cases indicating the high reproducibility of the method. Overall, the three methods performed comparably in extracting templates. PHWE seems to be the method of choice as it employed water which poses no environmental threat.

- Description: This study documents validation of vertebral band-pair formation in spotted gully shark (Triakis megalopterus) with the use of f luorochrome injection and tagging of captive and wild sharks over a 21-year period. Growth and mortality rates of T. megalopterus were also estimated and a demographic analysis of the species was conducted. Of the 23 OTC (oxytetracycline) -marked vertebrae examined (12 from captive and 11 from wild sharks), seven vertebrae (three from captive and four from wild sharks) exhibited chelation of the OTC and f luoresced under ultraviolet light. It was concluded that a single opaque and translucent band pair was deposited annually up to at least 25 years of age, the maximum age recorded. Reader precision was assessed by using an index of average percent error calculated at 5%. No significant differences were found between male and female growth patterns (P>0.05), and von Bertalanffy growth model parameters for combined sexes were estimated to be L∞=1711.07 mm TL, k=0.11/yr and t0= –2.43 yr (n=86). Natural mortality was estimated at 0.17/yr. Age at maturity was estimated at 11 years for males and 15 years for females. Results of the demographic analysis showed that the population, in the absence of fishing mortality, was stable and not significantly different from zero and particularly sensitive to overfishing. At the current age at first capture and natural mortality rate, the fishing mortality rate required to result in negative population growth was low at F>0.004/ yr. Elasticity analysis revealed that juvenile survival was the principal factor in explaining variability in population growth rate.
