- Description: The major criticism of the human skin blanching assay is the subjective nature of grading the response. Recently the American FDA released a Guidance document for topical corticosteroid bioequi valence testing. The guidelines require the use of a chromameter as a reliable method to estimate skin blanching. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the recommendations of this document for appropriateness by comparing visual and chromameter data. The visually-assessed blanching assay methodology routinely practised in our laboratories was modified to comply with the specifications of the Guidance. The preliminary trial indicated that the training period that is required for a novice to be classified as an experienced observer is not a major problem. The major trend that emerged from the pilot study was that visual assessment was better than the chromameter. Longer dose durations were found to be more discriminatory than shorter durations. The visual data were best described by the sigmoid Emax model and the chromameter data were best described by the simple Emax model. The pivotal results indicated that the D2/Dj criterion to determine sample size of "acceptable blanchers" produced only few subjects suggesting that the validity of this criterion requires extensive investigations. The estimates of the Locke's confidence interval method were simiJar to those for the general simple formula. However, due to undefined parameters of the Locke's method in the Guidance, the validity of the Locke's method requires evaluation. The chromameter b-scale parameter was the least sensitive in estimating skin blanching whereas the a- and L-scale parameters produced similar results. Poor correlation between visual and chromameter was noted indicating that the visual method is still the best method.

Case-based strategies in research are widely used in case study methodology as well as in a number of qualitative methodologies including grounded theory development, phenomenological research method and psychotherapy process research. The epistemological principles upon which casebased research is based are fundamentally different those which inform groupbased research using quantitative multivariate statistics. The case-based research process is divided into three general phases: descriptive, theoretical-heuristic, and theory-testing. Each of these phases is subdivided into two categories. Teachers, (45% of whom are poorly qualified), "will play a pivotal role in the success or failure of this change. There is therefore an urgent need to re-educate in-service teachers in the philosophy, and related methodologies underpinning Curriculum 2005. To this end, in-service education courses need to be developed "which will encourage teachers to reconstruct their beliefs about teaching and learning. INSET programmes in the past were aimed at either "topping up" qualified teachers, or "adding on" for under qualified teachers - neither of which have proved successful. It is therefore unlikely that applying similar methodologies to support teachers in the shift to OBE will meet with success, nor will simply "training" teachers to use the new learning programmes. Government documents on Education Policy are calling for teachers to become reflexive practitioners, able to guide learners in their efforts to achieve the critical outcomes which are intended to develop a competent citizenry of lifelong learners. Therefore, teachers ought to be empowered as curriculum developers in their own right. This interpretative case study hoped to find out from teachers themselves what aspects of an activity-based environmental education course acted as change agents in assisting them to begin the shift to constructivist theories of teaching and learning. A variety of research tools were used, including questionnaires, interviews, journals, narratives and concept maps, all of which provided a rich source of data for interpretation. From what was gained from four participants in this research, tentative suggestions for incorporation into the next cycle of action research in future INSET programmes are made.

This unique veld type is endemic to the Eastern Cape, and forms an important centre of endemism for small succulents and geophytes which comprise the subdominant component of the vegetation. It is regarded as the most threatened vegetation type in the Eastern Cape, as much of it has been severely degraded by farming activities and its rate of regeneration is very low. Thus the AENP represents an important sanctuary for certain species. However, large herbivores, particularly elephants, pose a further threat to the vegetation, and areas from which elephants have been excluded in the park (botanical reserves) have been shown to be more speciesrich than the surrounding vegetation. Most elephant-impact studies have focussed on the large shrub component of the vegetation, and only preliminary studies have been done in AENP to date. As the elephant population continues to grow, there is pressure to utilise the botanical reserves to increase the amount of available grazing. It is thus important that the botanical reserve system be highly effective and efficient in terms of area. Existing botanical reserves were established ad hoc and are therefore not necessarily optimal in this regard. An iterative reserve-selection algorithm was used to maximise plant species conservation in the most efficient area.

Women's experience of abortion : a qualitative study

- Description: Abortion is an emotive topic that always raises strong feelings. The purpose of this study, however, is not to focus on the religious, political or moral questions surrounding abortion. Abortion is a reality and in South Africa, where it has only recently become legal, there is a need to have an understanding of the effects on women in order to provide counselling services. There is also a need to provide services for the many women who have had illegal terminations in the past. This study reviewed the most recent literature on the subject and the researcher takes the view that although the scientific literature states there is little long term psychological effect of abortion, the non-positivist literature which records women's experiences tells another story. Some of the problems with the scientific literature is that psychological effects are not defined and there may be political motivation for the study, ie. an attempt is made to prove that the health costs are not high for abortion because there is little long term effect. The researcher, however, feels this does a disservice to women who have had abortions because there is a failure to provide counselling services. Some members of the feminist movement also deserve criticism because in their haste to give women their rights they fail to allow a woman to thoroughly explore her options beforehand and to provide support services afterwards. The researcher, however, also identified a new theme in the literature which has been called a maturing of the feminist viewpoint that along with the right to abortion, women also have a right to the mixed feelings that go with making, what is for many, a very painful decision. There is a recognition that abortion is about loss and thus there is a corresponding need to acknowledge women's need to mourn and to provide services. The study does not include the experience of women who seek abortions for reasons of poverty. It also excludes the experience of women who have abortions as a result of rape, incest or harm to the foetus. It is a qualitative study and a non-probability sampling technique which comprised snowball and purposive methods was used to identify respondents. In-depth semi-structured interviews using a broad theme of questions were conducted with five respondents. The women were asked to tell the stories of their abortions: their and their partner's feelings before and after, how they decided and the actual experience. They were also asked to identify counselling requirements, what they found helpful and what would have helped. The literature and the findings support the researcher's view that women who find themselves with an unexpected pregnancy need an opportunity to objectively consider all their options, namely keeping the baby, adoption or abortion, and to have an objective counsellor assist them in vigorously considering these. If they decide on a termination they need to be given as much information as possible about the procedure and about how they are likely to feel. Afterwards counselling should be made available and women should be encouraged to use the service. They need to be assisted to explore all ways of coming to terms with it such as through dream work, dialogueing with the unborn child through a letter and for those with religious beliefs seeking absolution from the church. There is a great need for a Christian and other religious ministry in this regard. Self-help therapies such as support groups can also be helpful

Yet the feasibility of these institutions to cope with social and economic changes have been seldom explored. In this paper a case study is presented where internal deregularisation of the ‘commons’ is the result of existing socio-cultural principles combined with outside influences. Two territorial models are compared to elucidate emerging internal instabilities of sea tenure institutions and possible ways to correct existing problems. The codification of the commons is suggested here as a possible measure to strengthen indigenous common property regimes.
