Exports, capital formation and economic growth in South Africa

- Description: In South Africa the export sector is frequently accorded a special role in encouraging faster economic growth. Nonetheless, a question that remains unresolved is whether higher export growth indeed leads to higher economic growth and what particular role exports may play within the overall economic growth process of the country. This study applies Johansen’s cointegration procedure, impulse response functions, variance decomposition analysis and Granger causality tests to shed light on the channels through which export growth may impact South Africa’s economic growth rate. Quarterly time series data ranging from 1975q1 to 2012q4 is employed in the study’s empirical tests. The results support the notion that the role of exports lies in their ability to encourage investment and capital formation. While export growth directly supports higher economic growth in the short-run, the long-term effect was found to lie in supporting faster capital formation, and in turn, significantly increasing economic growth. Overall, a strategy of export-led growth that does not explicitly emphasize the export-capital-growth connection is likely to fall short of reflecting the dynamics contained within the exports-growth relationship in South Africa.

- Description: The use of treated grey water (GW) for home gardens, peri-urban agriculture and landscaping is becoming popular in many water stressed countries such as Oman. This study aims to investigate the treatment efficacy, health and chemical concerns, cost-benefits and maintenance protocol of a GW treatment system as well as the effect of irrigation with GW on crop yield. Therefore, a decentralized homemade GW treatment system was installed in a newly constructed house in Muscat, Oman and studied over a 2-year period. The treated GW was found to be suitable for irrigation as per Omani standards. GW when mixed with kitchen effluent substituted the use of nutrient supplements for plants and did not show any harmful chemical or biological contamination. The capital cost of the system was around US $980, and the annual operating cost was US $78 with annual income and savings from the system being around US $572 indicating a payback period of nearly 2 years. It was found that the system required simple but regular maintenance particularly cleaning of the top layer of the filter. It can be concluded from this study that such a GW system should be technically, economically and environmentally feasible in Oman. Also, wider acceptance by the general public to the idea of GW reuse will help in mitigating the water shortage problem of the country to some extent.

- Description: Semiconductor nanoparticles also known as quantum dots (QDs) have been used in diverse areas of application due to their good optical and photo-physical properties. The synthesis of core–shell QDs have assisted to improve the stability of most nano-particles but the size and long term stability of such materials have been problematic. However, thiol-capped CdTe QDs have been regarded as some of the most widely synthesized nanoparticles due to their unique optical properties. The use of un-stable tellurium source such as NaHTe or highly toxic H2Te gas makes the reaction condition cumbersome. In this study, we prepared some CdTe QDs and core–shell QDs using K2TeO3 as a stable source of tellurium without inert gas protection. This was done using a co-capped bio-compatible coating such as cysteine and glutathione following a modified standard method to produce QDs in the yields of about 60 to 80%. All the synthesized materials were subsequently characterized using various characterization techniques. The systematic optimization of the reaction parameters such as reaction time, pH and mole ratio results with a drastic red shift in wavelength (546–600 nm) by the CdTe core proved that an extra material has been deposited unto the surface of the CdTe core. The 60 days stability test conducted demonstrated that the core–shell nanoparticles were quite stable. Since this reaction was performed under open air conditions and no special ligand or buffer solution was used, it may suitably be applied on an industrial scale.

Attempts to lessen such negative impact include involving alumni who know the school‟s context, history and ethos. Unfortunately, the concept of alumni support in terms of mentoring and motivating learners is not the norm in many under resourced schools. This research focuses on fostering partnerships with alumni using participatory action research (PAR), because it is holistic, relationally driven and inclusive. Embedded in complexity theory that views the school community as a nonlinear system of different interacting parts functioning to improve the school context, the research follows actionreflection cycles of a group of ten past pupils and five educators from various backgrounds, levels of education and expertise collaborating with and mobilizing other alumni. Data were generated using drawings, photo voice and interviews. Thematic data analysis was used to build patterns and form categories. The following themes emerged namely, the importance of establishing a collective vision for sustained alumni engagement for alumni‟s personal and professional aspirations to serve the vision of the school, the importance of creating an alumni culture that reinforces the concept of „paying it forward‟. Lastly, establishing a sustainable alumni association through sustained actions and interactions and by creating an organisation of excellence The newly developed alumni structure as a „resource fountain‟ generating and cascading energy around the school emerged as an anchor for sustainability. The cascaded energy evolved into a structured „Alumni Week‟ providing ongoing motivation for current learners to sustain alumni engagement.

However, little is known about primary healthcare (PHC) nurses perceptions of the implementation of the NTBMGs, despite their critical role in TB management. The purpose of this study was to explore PHC nurses perception of the implementation of the NTBMGs in order to identify factors influencing the implementation of the NTBMGs and to make recommendations to improve the implementation of the NTBMGs. The study was conducted in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The Normalization Process Model (NPM) was used as a theoretical framework to understand the factors influencing the implementation of the NTBMGs. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual research design was utilised. Data were collected using individual semi-structured interviews on a purposive sample of PHC nurses working in rural clinics. Data were analysed following a descriptive method of Tesch. The study revealed several facilitators for and barriers to the implementation of the NTBMGs based on the NPM. The facilitators included the PHC nurses satisfaction with the Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course (DOTS) strategy in rendering health services to TB patients, the PHC nurses perception of TB meetings as an appropriate platform for problem-solving, of the NTBMGs to be consistent with TB management, and of job satisfaction in relation to patient improvement. The barriers included poverty, inadequate training, shortage of staff, and a lack of material resources, a proper infection control policy, and space. There is a need for the provision of adequate human, material and infrastructural resources in order to eliminate the barriers to the implementation of the NTBMGs.

This thesis will attempt to provide novice and experienced researchers an application of two factor analysis methods which are; exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to medical data. As Biostatistics knowledge continues to grow, it is timely that this thesis contributes immensely; firstly to the discipline of Biostatistics and secondly to Medicine both nationally and internationally. Factor analysis is an important tool that can be used in the development, refinement, and evaluation of tests, scales, and measures that can be used in education and in health-related professions such as medicine. This thesis is focused on applying Factor Analysis on medical data, specifically on data obtained from patients that suffer from Metabolic Syndrome and patients who don’t suffer from Metabolic Syndrome. Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a constellation of components (factors) such as obesity, lipid-lipoprotein (fats) disorders, increase in glucose (sugar), hypertension (blood pressure), and inflammation/ hypercoagulability (clotting). MS and other risk factors; (smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, and inappropriate diet) determine high morbidity and mortality for the cardiovascular disease (CVD=heart attack, brain attack, peripheral vascular disease) or cardio-metabolic risk (CMR=type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, retinopathy). Obesity, CVD, and CMR are emerging as epidemic conditions worldwide. However, Africa is not paying priority to early detection, treatment, prevention and control of atherosclerotic diseases (MS, CMR) from valid and reliable data. The aim of this thesis was to examine anthropometry, glucose and blood pressure (non-lipid components of MS) as most valid, reliable, less time-consuming, less complex and less expensive procedure of identifying people at high risks of CVD and CMR. A further contribution of this thesis was its understanding of the economic implications of the burden of Metabolic Syndrome. Other burden factors have been identified and also discussed. The study has revealed that the presence of metabolic syndrome has contributed to an enormous economic burden by about 20percent of the total economic loss experienced by many countries. The prevalence has risen recently and elevated patients’ use of more health care resources, and face higher morbidity and mortality, resulting in an enormous economic burden. Some studies have shown healthcare costs to be as much as 20percent higher than those accrued by patients without the risk factors. Patients with the Metabolic Syndrome have been shown to have greater drug expenditures, more frequent hospitalizations, and higher utilization of outpatient and physician services. When considered alone, the individual risk factor components account for a substantial economic burden to patients, health plans, and society as a whole. Overall, this has had serious economic impacts on many countries. The diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome as a condition may encourage appropriate management and thus help prevent disease progression and reduce the considerable economic impact. This study was a cross-sectional, comparative, and correlational survey conducted between January and April 2005, in Kinshasa Hinterland, DRC. Participants were black Bantu Africans. In this study, the researcher attempted to determine latent factors that could explain the variability in a large set of data collected on many individuals of mixed health statuses. The original population consisted of 9770 people of whom, only 977 (10percent) participated. Factor analysis and interpretation of the results were based on anthropometric parameters (body mass index or BMI and waist circumference or WC), blood pressure (BP), lipid (triglycerides)-lipoprotein (HDL-C) and glucose with different numbers and cutoffs of components of Metabolic Syndrome. A number of different statistical procedural methods have been employed to clearly scrutinize and bring out the information which is concealed in a variety of variables observed/collected on many human participants. A large portion of these approaches was based on multivariate statistical methods. The approach, in this case, was the application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA); a multivariate statistical approach used under Factor Analysis to reduce many variables into a few latent variables which are seen as capable of explaining the variability. The approach was effected under both conditions of presence and absence of metabolic risk. Other data settings were: within males, within females, in the rural and in urban communities.

The diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome as a condition may encourage appropriate management and thus help prevent disease progression and reduce the considerable economic impact. This study was a cross-sectional, comparative, and correlational survey conducted between January and April 2005, in Kinshasa Hinterland, DRC. Participants were black Bantu Africans. In this study, the researcher attempted to determine latent factors that could explain the variability in a large set of data collected on many individuals of mixed health statuses. The original population consisted of 9770 people of whom, only 977 (10percent) participated. Factor analysis and interpretation of the results were based on anthropometric parameters (body mass index or BMI and waist circumference or WC), blood pressure (BP), lipid (triglycerides)-lipoprotein (HDL-C) and glucose with different numbers and cutoffs of components of Metabolic Syndrome. A number of different statistical procedural methods have been employed to clearly scrutinize and bring out the information which is concealed in a variety of variables observed/collected on many human participants. A large portion of these approaches was based on multivariate statistical methods. The approach, in this case, was the application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA); a multivariate statistical approach used under Factor Analysis to reduce many variables into a few latent variables which are seen as capable of explaining the variability. The approach was effected under both conditions of presence and absence of metabolic risk. Other data settings were: within males, within females, in the rural and in urban communities.

Data gathered through audio recorded, in-depth and semi-structured interviews with each of the senior managers and also documented reports on Water Service Provision (WSP) were analyzed using thematic analysis into meaningful patterns reflecting each of the components of Higgins’ (2005) 8 “S” model. Findings of this qualitative study reveal that senior managers had different but complementary views of what strategy they were implementing at ADM. More importantly, the implementation of centralized water services provision model by ADM was characterized by deep and persistent vacancies of key technical but also managerial positions in the new structure. Furthermore while human and financial resources were inadequate to match with the depth and variety of changes necessary to have the requisite number of staff, ADM implemented the centralized water service strategy with poor skills mix which negatively impacted on quality of water service. While ADM had ten espoused shared values, none of these were commonly and widely shared by employees in their day-to-day world of work. Instead, employee’s behavior at ADM was practically shaped by the emergent values of cooperation, and employee care and recognition. Thus there was misalignment between espoused and practiced shared values. Furthermore there was also recurrent and deep misalignment between structure, staff, resources and water quality systems which compounded the difficulties experienced by ADM in pursuit of centralized water service provision. While the use of outsourced mechanical and electrical services was a remedy to staff shortages and the lack of skills mix, it ultimately further aggravated the financial challenges of ADM by draining more of the already limited financial resources. Recommendations for improving the implementation of centralized water service strategy and areas for further research are suggested.

The majority of the participants also agreed that folic acid and ferrous sulphate are good for the unborn baby (88 percent); and are harmless to the unborn baby (75.3 percent). The majority (49.2 percent) of the participants did not consume dark leafy vegetables, cabbage (35.0 percent), liver (47.1 percent), beef/lamb (42.0 percent), fish (43.3 percent) and beans/legumes (36.4 percent). Participants indicated that folic acid and ferrous sulphate made them feel nauseous, inclined to vomit and also caused stomach pain.Conclusion: The majority of pregnant teenagers received their nutritional supplements from the health facilities over the counter. The study indicated that nausea, vomiting, forgetting to take the supplements due to busy schedules, non-availability of folic acid and ferrous sulphate in health facilities were the major reasons influencing the intake of folic acid and ferrous sulphate by pregnant teenagers. Also, there is low consumption of iron and folate rich foods by pregnant teenagers in this setting. Health practitioners including doctors, nurses and community health care workers needed to improve health education by including information on nutritional supplements and the importance an use of folic acid and ferrous sulphate during pregnancy.

Building relationships also emphasises the importance of communication within marketing. Traditional person-to-person word-of-mouth communication has always played a role in marketing a product or service. The evolution of technology over recent years has enabled electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM), which is frequently carried out and has proven to be another effective marketing tool. Due to the fundamental role that marketing plays within a business and the frequent use of electronic word-of-mouth as a marketing tool it is important that business owners and marketers are aware of the factors influencing the effectiveness of it. This study explores eWOM from a marketing perspective, through investigating the factors that contribute towards the effectiveness of eWOM as a marketing tool. Therefore the primary objective of the study was to investigate the factors influencing effective eWOM marketing. A quantitative research approach was followed to empirically test the hypotheses and determine whether relationships exist between the four independent variables (factors influencing eWOM) and the dependent variable (effective eWOM marketing). A self-administered, five-point Likert-scale style structured questionnaire was used to obtain the data. The sample for this study comprised of 360 consumer respondents within the Nelson Mandela Metropole. An exploratory factor analysis extracted four valid constructs namely feedback, trustworthiness, social status and networking as the factors influencing effective eWOM marketing. Cronbach’s alphas confirmed the reliability of all extracted constructs. Most correlation results indicated moderate associations between the variables. However, effective eWOM marketing proved to have a strong correlation with social status. The results of the multiple regressions for the factors influencing effective eWOM marketing identified three statistically significant relationships between feedback, social status, networking and effective eWOM marketing. MANOVAS confirmed eleven statistically significant relationships of which only three were of practical significance. Practical significant relationships exist between ethnic affiliation, current position, years working experience and social status. In addition to identifying the three specific factors influencing effective eWOM marketing, namely online feedback, the need to obtain social status and the desire to engage in online networking, this study has made several contributions, specifically to eWOM marketing. This study has recommended specific online marketing strategies to increase effective eWOM for online feedback, for individuals to obtain social status and to engage in online networking. The hypothesised model developed from the study, illustrating the three factors that influence effective eWOM marketing for South African consumers, can now be used by other researchers in other countries as a framework for further testing or for businesses/marketing organisations to obtain information on the attributes to pay attention to increase the effectiveness of their eWOM marketing. The role that demographics such as ethnic affiliation, position in the business and years working experience play in satisfying the need of individuals to obtain social status in an online setting via eWOM marketing, were also confirmed. Furthermore, this study has provided practical advice to businesses/marketing organisations on how to utilise this knowledge to their advantage when wishing to stimulate eWOM conversations about their products and services. The findings of the research will also assist businesses/marketing organisations to initiate eWOM engagement and communicate more effectively with consumers online to obtain information on how to improve on and change existing products/services or the need for new product/service offerings to retain customers, ensure continuous consumer satisfaction and increase business turnover.

That said, it has become apparent that it is not only financial factors but many other non-financial factors that play a role in employee turnover. From the literature explored for this paper, five main factors were identified and discussed for different groups of healthcare professionals. This study used a qualitative research approach by means of a content analysis, whereby data from secondary sources were reviewed. This study disregarded studies done in other countries and focused only on the South African healthcare sector. Push and pull factors were established and, during this process, HIV/AIDS, crime and human resources were identified as possible push factors that contribute to the movement of South Africa’s healthcare workers. Since the five main retention factors identified for the purpose of this research paper all fall under human resources, the study proposes a retention strategy that involves the revision of the employee value proposition for different healthcare groups, as their demands are not uniform. Financial as well as non-financial factors have been taken into account for the various employee value proposition frameworks. In this paper, we present factors that influence the peak-like shape of continuous-wave optically stimulated luminescence (CW-OSL) signal. The report is based on the experimental study of OSL signals obtained by stimulation of very deep traps in α-Al2O3:C. Methods exploiting post-irradiation annealing, variable dose and temperature dependent OSL measurements were used in the investigation. It is found that the rising part of the CW-OSL peak is obtained when the rate of retrapping at the most optically active trap (main trap) exceeds the rate of direct radiative recombination following optical release of charges from all optically active traps. This is possible if, during optical stimulation, the primary trap responsible for OSL i.e. the main trap, is substantially unoccupied and the very deep, donor traps are substantially filled up. The rate of charge retrapping itself is deduced to depend on the occupancy of the acceptor traps i.e. shallow, main and secondary traps; concentration of charge carriers in the very deep, donor traps; the post-irradiation annealing temperature and the temperature at which the OSL is measured.

The study employed a qualitative approach for an in-depth understanding and verification. Source of documents included academic and non -academic books, journal articles published and unpublished dissertations, official documents of the government and the magazines and the internet were used as sources of secondary data. The main finding in terms of the research objective is that there a number of factors inhibiting rural development include lack of basic infrastructure, lack of access to markets, low employment, and training and capacity building. Infrastructure such as roads, transport and irrigation is crucial for improving and stabilising the livelihoods of rural households and providing access to markets and key social services in the Amahlathi Municipality. The recommends that a serious interventions by the states should be employed and also has to encourage investment in infrastructure using labour-intensive methods to reduce service backlogs in underserviced areas in Amahlathi. Government has to develop service-improvement programmes that generate income and employment in order to reduce poverty in Amahlathi Municipality. This includes empowerment of people.

In order to determine student motivation, an Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) was used. Learning styles were assessed using a Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) tool. The student’s National Senior Certificate (NSC) results were compared to the students 2016 semester one final marks, to correlate student readiness and prior academic achievement with current academic achievement. Home language and sources of financial support were also evaluated using a purpose-designed questionnaire. Results showed that only the Life Sciences module was practically and statistically significant as a predictor of academic success, with a p-value of .001 and a correlation coefficient |r| value of .369. The minimum entry requirements for the BPharm Degree do not include Life Science, however, based on this study, inclusion of Life Sciences at a specific achievement level should be considered.

Research purpose: The main purpose of the study was to investigate the factors influencing the career success of women managers at a historically black institution. Motivation: Most studies that focused on career success opted for a positivist research paradigm, but this study is amongst the few that has employed the interpretivism paradigm to enable the researcher to understand subjectively the occupational challenges women experience. Research approach, design, methodology: The study was conducted to ascertain the factors that influence the career success of women managers. A sample of 20 participants was selected, and one on one semi-structured interviews were conducted with women managers who are currently working at the University of Fort Hare. A qualitative approach was suitable for the study because the challenges of the participants were expressed from their lived experiences. The interviews were analysed using Braun and Clarke's six steps of data analysis. Main findings: The study revealed that women experience similar career challenges as they go up their career ladder. Such challenges include gender discrimination, resistance, the glass ceiling and work-life balance dilemma; hence, all these above affect the career success of women. Various themes emerged from the study, namely, the quests for further professional development and improvements, the heightened prioritisation of objective rewards and subjective rewards, negotiation between work and personal space as affecting career development and the resolution tactic: flee or fight. Practical/ managerial implications: An intervention is needed to ensure that organisations are more sensitive to the issues of women representation to top positions to enhance their career success. The study will be useful to both organisations and academics to design policies that will facilitate the career success of women. Contribution: The study is amongst the few that adopted the qualitative paradigm in investigating the factors influencing the career success of women managers, by understanding from their lived experiences. The implications of these findings for policy, practice and career counselling are suggested.

South Africa stands at around 16% of gross domestic product, fellow BRICS members China and Russia are standing at approximately 52% and 22% respectively. South Africa saw a decline from approximately 30% GDP to savings ratio before 1994 to the current level of approximately 16%. The trend has been very similar in comparison with India. The other similarity between these BRICS countries is that they all have seen very rapid growth. All economic indicators have indicated that the economies of the BRICS nations are very strong and have been performing at a superior level to South Africa. South Africa compares even worse with regards to household savings versus its BRICS counterparts. Various arguments and explanations as to why this is so come up on a number of social, government and corporate platforms. The “aspirational” culture is widely blamed for the poor showing of South African households when it comes to savings. The South African financial sector is very sophisticated and is widely blamed for the encouraging consumption and even worse credit consumption. An analysis done by Ecnometrics found that amongst the significant determinants of household saving rates are: uncertainty (inflation), income level, public sector savings, development’s in the global economy and government economic policy. The study revealed that the above factors were very influential in the rapid economic growth and increased per capita net worth seen of the most BRICS countries. The correlation between saving/investment and consumption/irresponsible consumer behavior is indicated to be a very strong one and takes a very longtime to evolve. This requires outrooting certain societal norms, attitudes and culture and replacing it with a brand new behavior, beliefs and aspirations. Role players that emerge as strong drivers in this phenomena is the societal culture however the other role player who prove to be prominent are the policy makers. In most cases the economic and gross national saving rates coincided with major economic policy reforms in the countries that have performed well.

- Description: Against the backdrop of debates and contestations in the literature on the efficacy of interventions of Faith-based organisations (FBOs) with regard to vulnerable people, this study subjects the social reintegration programmes of three selected FBOs working with recovering drug-addicts in South-western Nigeria to a sociological scrutiny so as to understand the social character, effectiveness and local appropriateness of their programmes. Specifically, the study examined the key attributes of the social reintegration programmes offered by the selected FBOs as well as the level and extent of compliance of such programmes with the prescriptions and idealisations as enunciated in relevant global and national policies and institutional frameworks. The theoretical underpinning of this study was derived from assumptions of structural-functionalism of Durkheim and Expectancy disconfirmation theory. Adopting an exploratory approach, the study utilised a blend of survey, key informant interviews, in-depth interviews, observation and document review to gather data. Survey data were collected from a random sample of 156 inmates of the social reintegration facilities of three (3) FBOs in Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states in South-West Nigeria. Qualitative data were sourced through 15 in-depth interviews, 9 key informant interviews and scientific information generated from observation and document review. The quantitative data gathered were analysed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were processed with the use of content analysis. Findings from the study indicate that the selected FBOs have only recorded little success in terms of addressing the social needs of the inmates. For one thing, FBOs’ detoxification programme for recovering drug-addicts tilted more towards human rights violation than serve as an exercise that aided recovery. One key finding was that there was a huge disconnect between global prescriptions on social reintegration services and what the selected FBOs offered to the inmates. The study concluded from its findings that any social reintegration programmes aimed at protecting recovering drug-addicts from further social exclusion and facilitate their social inclusion in South-West Nigeria must extend beyond mere spiritual provisioning to upholding their rights to human dignity and providing opportunities and tools that address their crucial social needs in terms of housing, education, vocation and employment.

- Description: The aim of this study was to explore and describe the intergenerational interactional patterns in a Coloured family where the mother has abused alcohol. Researchers have found that drinking behaviours of parents can have major effects on the children’s lives throughout generations. Substance abuse of a parent has major influences on the family, their interactions, and relationships, mostly between the parent and the child. There is a major gap in the study of the Coloured families and how substance abuse affects their families and children. The study employed Bowen’s constructs of differentiation of self, multigenerational transmission process, triangulation, emotional cut-off, nuclear family emotional system, sibling position, family projection process, and societal regression and utilized analytical generalization of the concepts to achieve its aim. The mother, an older sibling and maternal mother were the main sources of data although the perspective of the mother herself was privileged in the study. Semi-structured interviews were utilized to gather the data. This allowed participants to freely narrate their personal perceptions and experiences of interaction in both the family of origin and the current nuclear family. The research used a single case study of a purposively sampled family. The researcher is a Coloured female who had specific interest in this specific cultural group and their interactional patterns, which optimised cultural familiarity during the research process and reduced the likelihood of potential discriminatory racial bias of the participants. The findings demonstrate that perceptions of interactional patterns in the nuclear family and family of origin coincided with certain of Bowen’s Family Systems concepts, particularly, triangulation and differentiation. However, the need for further exploration of concepts such as the nuclear family emotional system and the family projection process in Coloured families are still needed in future studies. The findings provided insight into the functioning of the relationships and FAMILY INTERACTION IN MATERNAL ALCOHOL ABUSE interactions in both the nuclear family and the family of origin. Limitations of the current study are identified and recommendations for future studies in this field are also offered.
