  • Description: The Arab influence is still strong up country particularly along the old Arab trading routes. All the seven items on this side of the disc represent an evening's entertainment spent with a Mohamedan Swahili family in Tabora whose taste in music leans towrds the Arab side of the family than the African. Two close friends who frequently play together in the evenings recorded these items. The wife of one of them provides some of the solos. They are typical, no doubt, of a musical evening at home by Swahili players anywhere in East Africa. All the items were recorded in the small sitting room of their Swahili home. The men singers sat around a table in the light of a parafin lamp and their veiled womenfolk sat on mats in the adjoining rooms, watching through the doorways. "Do not covet because there is no colour bar in jail. Even though you go to London and become a Barrister at law if you are in trouble you are in trouble just the same. The leader was dressed up in his dancing kit, with feather head dress, red ochre on the face and rag dress. The singers were workers on the Mwadui diamond mines, recruited locally. The song features a character whom they call Sajeni Meja (Sergeant Major) no doubt on account of the fact that several of them served for a while in the K.A.R., the Kings' African Rifles. During the singing they call out the familiar cry used by the soilders of the King's African Rifles. The moral problems of the disintegrated family and tribal life present themselves at every turn and especially in the towns or industrial areas where large bodies of men are attracted to work.   • Description: The Ugubu was a popular instrument with the Zulu of Natal several generations ago but few are now left in Natal. With the exception of one or two minor details this instrument is in the same as that of the Zulu. The chief modification is the use of a straining bridge to increase the tension of the bark string. This bow was made of a length of Tete reed 5 ft. 2 1/4 inches long and about 1 1/4 ins. diameter, and had an unusual method of straining the single string. There was a small bridge inserted between the reed and the string near the lower end and the resonating gourd was attached by means of a wore which also acted as a moveable tuning device dividing the string into two segments. The top segment was 3 ft. 10 ins. long and emitted a note of 71 vs. (81 vs. when stopped by clasping between the finger and thumb). The lower segment was not used.
