- Description: The study is an examination of weak form market efficiency (EMH) in BRICS equity markets using weekly data spanning from 2005 to 2018. The study makes use linear as well as nonlinear unit rot tests, that is, the ADF and KSS tests respectively. For more robust results, the study uses the Integer Flexible Fourier Function (IFFF) and the Fractional Frequency Flexible Fourier Function (FFFFF) to account for smooth structural breaks. The study investigates the full sample period and splits the empirical data into three sub-samples corresponding to the period succeeding the global financial crisis, the BRICS summits and the BRICS Development Bank (BDB). This study, to the best of our knowledge, is the first to investigate the efficiency in the BRICS stock markets using a combination of the specified series of unit root tests. Moreover, there are no prior studies that have examined these markets for the sub-samples mentioned above. Our empirical results point us to convincing evidence of weak form inefficiency as the majority of the results reject the null hypothesis of a unit root.

- Description: My collection of isiZulu poems is based on my rural and traditional upbringing. It draws on language and customs which have shaped and defined me as a woman born in the South of KwaZulu-Natal. I write about how I have to conform to both a rural life and an urban one that forms my second world. I find myself having to switch between these lives, which benefits me a lot, and I feel a responsibility to bring hope to young people especially from the rural side, that nothing is wrong with being who and where they are. My writing is influenced by authors such as Nazim Hikmet, Mafika Gwala, and Mazisi Kunene who encourages black writers to write about their own customs and stories rather than embracing ‘western civilization’ and foreign languages. I also like the contemporary subjects and the humour in Dr Nakanjani Sibiya’s work.

- Description: The study sets out to investigate elections as drivers to political instability in Africa, using Lesotho as a case study from 2012 to 2017. It employs primary and secondary sources of data. The period is of interest for two reasons. Firstly, the continuing instability post three successive free and fair elections, and secondly, the advent of Coalition Governments. The structure adheres to two theoretical frameworks namely, a) Huntington’s two turn-over test and, b) Karl’s Fallacy of Electoralism. In order to investigate how elections could or could not be drivers to political instability, the researcher looked at the different forms of political instability in Lesotho. These include attempted coup d’état, assassinations and violation of territorial sovereignty. The later form being peculiar to the period under study as the other forms had occurred at some stage through the political history of this country. It further asserts uncertainty of hung Parliament and politicised institutions as attributes to the recurrence of political instability. It concludes that Lesotho is a deviant case from the two turn over test. The scope of the study supports the fallacy of electoralism. Several recommendations have been presented. These include that Government of Lesotho should amend the Constitution on the functions and powers of the King, Politicians should implement the promises they made to the electorates during campaigns, and regulate or abolish floor crossing in Parliament amongst others.

- Description: Climate change is a reality that is starting to have an impact on society through decreased agricultural production and increased extreme weather events, resulting to worldwide disasters. It is caused by human activities that release greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. One of the key areas of concern is the mobility sector which accounts for around 20% of the total energy use, with a GHG footprint of close to 14% of the global emissions. International organisations are concerned about the elevating GHG emissions resulting from the increasing internal combustion engine vehicles, leading to the recent wave in electrifying the vehicles which presents many of advantages as well as major constraints. This study used the quantitative research approach to investigate the possible benefits of electric vehicles to our environment in the future. The projections of vehicle population size were estimated using three cases, and the electric vehicle penetration into the market by 2030 was investigated with four different scenarios. Further research was done to investigate the possible barriers present in the South African market that impede the adoption of electric vehicles. The results showed that the projection of the business-as-usual case, coupled with mitigation scenarios, present a better option for mitigation. The worst case of exponential increases in vehicle population does not present any GHG emissions moderation hope for any of the mitigation scenarios used in the study. The other case shows high mitigation potential, but it leads to a case of economic decline where the numbers of vehicles are decreasing with time. The findings of the study on barriers to adoption of electric vehicles in the market highlighted the high purchase price, high battery price and high likelihood for owning a secondary vehicle based on the current circumstances, as the main barriers that the respondents in the Gauteng Province found to be unattractive. But generally the willingness to buy electric vehicles was high for the majority of the factors that were presented. With these perceived positive opinions by the respondents, it is down to government and private companies to provide an environment conducive to changed opinions conducive for the consumers. This relates to advancing the technology and providing policy support for the accelerated adoption of electric vehicles.

- Description: This study examines young Zambian men who are aspiring hip hop artists in Lusaka and the meanings they make of the representations of masculinity in Empire, a popular US television drama. Broadcast locally via satellite on the South African cable network, DStv, Empire narrates the story of a family of powerful men as they battle for the control of Empire, a successful hip-hop label. Of significance is how the programme’s representations of masculinity resonate with the young men’s own ideas of masculinity within a highly patriarchal and conservative urban African space. The young male hip-hop artists encounter their everyday experiences in a context of a range of socio-economic challenges within the urban space of Lusaka which presents them with very limited economic opportunities and resources. Underpinned by a constructivist approach, this reception study explores how these young male artists encounter their everyday experiences in the city and how its structural constraints are navigated through hip-hop, a highly popular local cultural form. The male artists’ reactions to the programme are dependent on their socio-economic location and the types of skills and resources they draw on in order to traverse their everyday experience of city life which concurrently is perceived as exclusionary and as impacting on their livelihoods and aspirations.

- Description: The subject of happiness has captured many across the world. There is an increasing debate on whether there is a link between improving the national happiness levels and country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Happiness has become an area of interest for both organisations and individuals because of the consequential benefits. Research affirmed the importance of happiness in improving the function of both society and organisations. The benefit thereof includes but is not limited to increased productivity and longevity. Having unhappy employees could have dire effects on the organisations due to the direct impact on the organisation’s financial and social conditions. The arms industry is generally seen as a highly secretive industry due to the strategic position and importance that it occupies in various countries. Happiness in the arms industry has never been explored. This makes this study new in this particular industry. The arms industry as a whole can also benefit by focusing on improving employees’ happiness levels. This makes the study in Armscor important as it would help to provide some insight on the happiness levels in this industry. The focus of this study is to establish happiness levels of Armscor employees. For the purpose of this study, the primary data for the study were collected from a representative sample of 170 Armscor employees which included 161 permanent and 9 non-permanent employees. The questionnaire designed from the literature was used to collect the data. The in-depth literature review that was conducted in carrying out this study included exploring the different perspectives from which happiness is defined. This included three seemingly dominant perspectives: philosophic, economic and psychological perspectives. Furthermore, the review of literature included examining happiness theories and explored three main theories: Comparison, Folklore and Livability. The literature review provided a basis for a proposed conceptual model, which suggested the following factors as influencing happiness in the workplace: workplace influence, workplace relationships, work-life balance, purpose, optimism, work satisfaction, leisure, SA pride and trust. Exploratory factor analysis was used to test the proposed conceptual model and the results indicate that workplace influence, workplace vi relationships and work satisfaction load onto the factor work; while trust and SA pride load onto the factor trust pride; and purpose, work-life balance and optimism load onto the factor purpose work-life optimism. The treatise concludes with recommendations that management can consider implementing to improve the happiness levels of employees at Armscor. This study contributes to understanding the happiness levels of employees in the arms industry.

- Description: Entrepreneurship is a phenomenon that has been studied across the world by scholars, practitioners and governments. All these different researchers believe that it is a critical tool for economic growth, job creation and enhancing innovation. However, some researchers have conceded that there has been limited research in entrepreneurship and the public service. Thus, this treatise is one of the few studies that have been conducted in entrepreneurial intention in the public service and the examination of entrepreneurial intention of public servants and the factors that influence individuals to opt for employment in the public service. A literature review examining the current knowledge on entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial intention in various contexts was conducted. The reviewed literature allowed for the formation of the base for a conceptual model to be developed. The proposed model claimed that there was a positive influence of culture, family obligations, job security, role modelling, entrepreneurial self – efficacy, access to financial resources and locus of control on the entrepreneurial intentions of public servants in South Africa. Furthermore, the theory of planned behaviour and social learning theory also known as social cognitive theory were explored. There were various statistical analysis tests that were conducted on the quantitative data collected. The mono – method quantitative was used with 280 respondents. Descriptive and inferential statistical tests and exploratory factor analysis were conducted to test the proposed conceptual model. The conceptual model tested consisted of the independent variables; culture, family obligations, job security, role modelling, entrepreneurial self – efficacy, access to financial resources and locus of control with entrepreneurial intention being the dependent variable for assessing the entrepreneurial intention of public servants in the public service of South Africa. The study found that the South African public servants have high entrepreneurial intentions and are very optimistic about creating and running their own business someday. The various statistical analyses split the independent variables from seven to eighteen variables: Family Commitments, Career, Job Purpose, Risk, Access to Knowledge, Entrepreneurship Exposure, Influence, Access to Finance, Financial Support, Business Financing, Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy, Cultural Perceptions, Societal Standards, Cultural Dedication, Service, Self-Belief and Reward. However, after further analysis of the relationships between the independent variables and the dependent variable, some factors were rejected. A model comprising of factors useful for assessing the entrepreneurial intentions in the public service is recommended with the following factors: Family Commitments, Career, Entrepreneurship Exposure, Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy, Cultural Perceptions, Societal Standards and Reward. Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy was found to explain approximately 75% of the movement in the entrepreneurial intentions of public servants. Significant differences on the entrepreneurial intentions of individuals from different races and those who varied according to years of experience were found. The study also found that Culture and Job Security influenced the decision to pursue public service employment. To conclude, the study makes managerial recommendations implementable for government and other stakeholders. Some of the recommendations include incentivising public servants with tax breaks, entrepreneurship courses and easier access to funding to enable them to exit the public service to start their own businesses. Additionally, entrepreneurship education is recommended to become compulsory in schools and for public servants through the National School of Government (NSG). Entrepreneurial ecosystems that encourage pay-it-forward type of interactions were also recommended. Seasoned entrepreneurs can be used as mentors to those public servants who wish to pursue entrepreneurship instead of remaining in the public service.

Environmental drivers of the composition and distribution of larval fish assemblages off the south coast of South Africa

- Description: The species composition, distribution and patterns of vertical migration of larval fish assemblages were investigated in March and in September 2013 within two adjacent log spiral bays, Algoa Bay and St Francis Bay, on the south coast of South Africa. Fish larvae were collected by means of a boat towed bongo net (57 cm diameter; mesh aperture 500 μm). An onshore (2 km) and an offshore (3 km) station were each sampled twice during the daytime (06:00 – 18:00) with two horizontal tows: near the surface (0.5 m) and close to the bottom (12 m). Tows were repeated at night (18:00 – 23:00) for onshore sites. Larval catches included 16 fish families and 40 species. A multivariate analysis indicated that the species composition was significantly different between Algoa Bay and St Francis Bay, with Engraulidae, Blenniidae, Sparidae, Soleidae and Cynoglossidae making important contributions to the larval fish catch in Algoa Bay, while Blenniidae, Engraulidae, Tripterygiidae, Sparidae and Gobiesocidae contributed significantly in St Francis Bay. Differences in assemblage composition were noted between the Spring (September–October) and Autumn (March-April) months. The species composition of larval fish assemblages was related to wind speed, wave height, cloud cover, sea water temperature, depth, average current speed and direction. Wind speed, wave height, temperature and depth significantly contributed to the variation in larval fish densities. Abundances of larval fishes were greater offshore than onshore, larvae from pelagic eggs dominated catches offshore, while larvae from demersal eggs dominated onshore catches. Habitat structure strongly influenced the composition of larval fishes between the bays and abundances were significantly greater at night than during the day. Most larval fishes displayed a reverse diel vertical migration pattern and were most influenced by predators, wind speed and cloud cover. This study shows that larval fish assemblages are highly complex and patchy. Spawning mode, individual species behaviour, diel vertical migration, current structure, depth, temperature, wind speed, cloud cover and type of habitat substratum all influence larval fish composition and distribution in the nearshore waters of South Africa.

- Description: Implementation of an ecosystem-based management approach for marine systems requires a comprehensive understanding of the biophysical marine environment and the cumulative human impacts at different spatio-temporal scales. In Algoa Bay, South Africa, this study describes the epibenthic communities occurring in unconsolidated marine habitats. It further investigates the potential abiotic factors that influence their distribution and abundance, compares epibenthic communities with existing habitat information and evaluates the protection status of the marine environment in the Bay. Seabed imagery, covering a total area of 171.4m², and sediment samples were collected from 13 stations from which 106 epibenthic species were identified. Multivariate analyses revealed two statistically distinct communities that did not align with the Algoa Bay benthic habitat types defined in the current National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA, 2012). Further assessment indicated that community differences were driven by the presence of rock substrate. A range of abiotic factors were tested against the epibenthic communities to explore patterns and identify potential drivers. The combination of abiotic factors depth, mean grain size, mean bottom temperature and mean bottom current explained 55% fitted variation in epibenthic data. The degree of long-term variability in several of these parameters were likewise identified as explanatory variables, including bottom temperature, current speed and dissolved oxygen. The link between abiotic factors and the epibenthic communities observed indicate that these variables can act as surrogates for habitat mapping in the future. The existing and proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA) in conjunction with the NBA 2012 habitat types does well in protecting the majority of habitats in the Bay, however there remain habitats that lack protection. Utilising the benthic communities and potential drivers identified in this study, the proposed MPA boundary delineations should be somewhat altered to include missing habitat types.

- Description: Since the end of the Apartheid Regime, various labour legislation has been enacted over the years to eliminate discrimination and grant everyone in South Africa the right to fair labour practices, including the prohibition of unfair payment practices in terms of item 2(1)(a) of Schedule 7 of the Labour Relations Act.1 The above item was repealed and replaced with an express provision strictly prohibiting unfair discrimination in any employment practice or policy.2 However, even though this express provision strictly prohibited unfair discrimination in employment, the International Labour Organisation criticised South Africa for the failure to include an express provision dealing specifically with equal remuneration in terms of the Employment Equity Act.3 Because of this criticism, sections 6(4) and (5)4 were introduced. Section 6(4) amendments were obviously not been successful as intended, as numerous employees still are facing unfair discrimination based on the wages. Looking at Case law in the United Kingdom, there are clearly principles and successes that South Africa can learn from and incorporate in South African labour law. Some successes include the proactivity of employers who identify groups of employees, which are performing work that is of equal value, comparing their salaries, and by investigating and removing pay gap causes. Another success is the use of reports of independent experts who can assess the value of different occupations. If South Africa does this, it will alleviate the pressure placed upon courts that do not have the necessary expertise to decide on the value.

Establishing baseline data of Cradock and Tarkastad’s communities’ disease profile ahead of hydraulic fracturing and shale gas development

- Description: The South African government is investigating alternative ways to address the electricity crisis and has identified fracking as an alternative energy source. Specific areas have been identified for the implementation of Shale Gas Development. Various research studies have connected fracking to the incidence of certain diseases. Since Cradock and Tarkastad have been identified as prospective areas for the implementation of fracking, the primary aim of this study was to determine the disease profile of the community members in Cradock and Tarkastad. This baseline data could be utilised at a later stage as a benchmark when similar studies are conducted after the implementation of Shale Gas Development in these communities. A quantitative approach utilising a comparative descriptive survey design was adopted to conduct this study. The research population comprised all community members in Cradock and Tarkastad. A multi-staged sampling process was applied namely, cluster, convenient and stratified random sampling process; 489 respondents were included in the research sample. Two structured questionnaires and checklists were developed and administered by Registered Nurses, who were recruited as fieldworkers, to collect the data for the study. One questionnaire and checklist were designed and used for the age groups five-year and under population (n=43), and the other questionnaire and checklist were used for the over five-year population group (n=446). This allowed for the establishment of a disease profile of all ages in both areas. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data, and a pilot study was conducted before the primary study. The results of the study revealed the current disease profile in Tarkastad and Cradock. One of the objectives of the study was to compare the prevalence of diseases and abnormalities found in Cradock and Tarkastad. Thereafter the disease profiles were combined in a single profile for both Cradock and Tarkastad. Statistical analysis among the five-year-old and under population group indicated significant associations between area and physiological status, birthweight and physical conditions identified and monthly household income and physiological status (p<0.05). The over five-year-old population group revealed a greater significance between the independent and dependent variable categories than in the age group five years and under. The study revealed that South Africa’s burden of disease is evident in these findings with HIV/AIDS topping the list. The prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS and Hypertention are higher than the national prevalence rates, in Cradock and Tarkastad. It was also worthwhile to mention that Tarkastad faces more socio-economic challenges compared to Cradock. Recommendations were made for nursing practice, nursing education and further development of nursing research based on the research findings.

- Description: Public Works Programmes (PWPs) are interventions implemented by the government to overcome the high levels of unemployment and to provide the poor with salaries so that they can meet their basic needs. This was done in response to the United Nations (UN) call to meet the sustainable development goals adopted in 2015. The study defines PWPs and gives an overview of the categories of the intervention programmes. Different countries use the PWPs for different aims from poverty reduction, response to economic shocks and guaranteed employment. Most of the countries, like South Africa, use these programmes as a temporary relief. Unemployment remains a challenge in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) and the municipality has always been unsuccessful in reaching the targets expected in job creation. The study compares the South African Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) with the two other international programmes, India and Malawi. The analysis of the three phases of the South African EPWP since its inception in 2004 is done in this study. The paper analysed the BCMM’s EPWP projects in the Eastern Cape where there is a high level of unemployment and a high degree of rural-urban migration. An overview of the Malawi Social Action Fund (MASAF) and India’s National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA) is also presented in this study. The researcher analysed documents and desktop reviews for the study. The available information such as the programme strategic plans, logical frameworks, policy documents, implementation reports, academic journals and media reports were consulted for this study. The study highlighted challenges in the South African EPWP which contributes towards the inefficiency of the programme in reducing the high levels of unemployment in the BCMM. The researcher provided recommendations that may improve the effectiveness of the public works programme in South Africa. One recommendation is the development of a Management Information System for EPWP that can assist the government in monitoring and evaluating the whole programme in the different departments and municipalities.

- Description: The University of Fort Hare Alice campus experiences high crime rates. To address this problem, and add to the literature, this study applied the Crime Prevention through Environmental design (CPTED) model to measure the effectiveness of the crime prevention strategies at the University of Fort Hare (Alice campus). The aim of this study was to evaluate the sufficiency of surveillance and visibility, target hardening, maintenance and management at the University of Fort Hare, which contribute to the reduction of criminal activities around campus. The study further sought to evaluate the perceptions of students regarding their safety on campus by way of soliciting their experiences and observations. This study used the quantitative method, and questionnaires were distributed to the students in the Alice campus to collect data. The study found that whilst a marginal majority of students felt safe, a large proportion of students felt unsafe on campus. The study also found that students were dissatisfied with the service and found the security officers to be incompetent and un-trained. The study evaluated the sufficiency of crime prevention measures implemented within the university. One crucial aspect that emerged from the study is that CPTED principles were not sufficiently implemented to their fullest and the perception of the majority of students was that security personnel were not functioning in the way that they should, and measures such as adequate lighting were lacking. As a result, students felt unsafe on campus, especially during the night .The study concluded that there are clear increased feelings of vulnerability among students at the University of Fort Hare. The measures that are currently in place are not sufficient; therefore there is need for implementation of CPTED principles. It was recommended that the University increases number of CCTV surveillance cameras on campus, Social gathering places be surrounded by security guards for patrols, lighting recommendations that are modern and in proper design, keep up with repairs, make necessary replacements, paint, trim, current campus buildings e updated to meet recent CPTED practises etc.

Evaluation of some Eastern beach bacteria for high activity laccase production

- Description: Laccases are multi-copper oxidases endowed with huge applicability and versatility. They are found in nature, fungi, insects, archaea and bacteria; however, there is a dearth of information regarding bacterial laccases. Thus, the search for novel bacterial laccases becomes crucial. Therefore, the broad aim of the study was the assessment of some bacteria on marine water isolated from Eastern beach for the production of high activity laccases. In this study, marine water samples obtained from the Eastern beach in East London were investigated for bacterial laccase-producing isolates. The samples were analysed using different microbiological media and varied substrates via qualitative methods. The isolates were tested for laccase activity using ABTS (2, 2’- azinobis 3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulphonate), as a substrate. The present study also dealt with the optimization of culture conditions for laccase production and characterization of laccase. A total of forty-eight (48) bacterial isolates were obtained, which were identified based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Many of the isolates (42) were categorized as Gram positive and a few (6) as Gram negative upon subjecting to microscopic examination. Result showed that on average, laccase activity ranged from 5.33 – 6.5 U/L as demonstrated by three bacterial isolates (Bacillus sp. NFN1, Bacillus sp. NLN and Escherichia coli LO). Laccase production was highly enhanced by the supplementation with vanillic acid by Bacillus sp. strain NLN with yield of 15.83 ± 0.7 U/L, Bacillus sp. strain NFN1, 12.72 ± 0.21 U/L. However, Escherichia coli LO demonstrated enhanced laccase production with guaiacol (12.84 ± 1.12 U/L) followed by ferrulic acid (12.8 ± 0.36 U/L). While optimization results revealed that the laccase yield was enhanced under the following conditions: 72 h of incubation, pH 5, 0.5mg/L lactose as a carbon source, 1. 5 mg/L yeast extract as a nitrogen source as well as in the presence of corn stover and mandarin peels as lignocellulosic substrates depending on the bacteria.The time course and stability of laccase against temperature, pH, metal ions and organic solvents were investigated using previously described methods. In the findings obtained for the time course, the laccase activity ranged from 22.2- 23.98 U/L. In general, the optimum parameters for the optimum laccase activities depended on the bacterial isolates and the time of incubation and included 80 °C and 70 °C, pH 3 and 9 while, the thermal stability was over 100%. Overall, NaCl, ZnSO4, NiCl and 20% acetone demonstrated positive effect on the residual activity of the laccases of all the bacterial isolates (Bacillus sp. NFN1, Bacillus v sp. NLN and Escherichia coli LO). In conclusion the findings of the study, suggest that marine water of the Eastern beach is a rich source for laccase producing bacteria with potential of high activity.

- Description: The study employed a quantitative as well as a qualitative approach. Four public schools in the uMgungundlovu District participated in this study. The identities of all respondents were protected. The sample included 154 participants, four Physical science educators and four Heads of department selected purposefully across four secondary schools. The study found that themajority of the learners reported that they have interest and positive attitude for Physical science but most of learners indicated they understanding when English is used as a medium of instruction in teaching Physical science but someprefer other languages to be used for their understanding. It was obvious that most parents lacked knowledge about Physical Sciences and could not assist their children. It was also indicated that their teachers are approachable especially for personal explanation giving them attention whenever they ask for assistance, creating an atmosphere that makes it easy for the learner to learn. The study reveals that learners had a high rate of their teachers motivating them enough to like physical science, by using different method for them to understand the subject and majority follow their teacher’s method but only few learners use their own method.The educators and the heads of departments confirmed that they do give the learners different method. Many learners understands what they are taught using diagrams and illustrations in order to make them understand in all subject study showed that the head of departments indicatedthat they do check the way the teachers teach for effectiveness on the part of the teachers in ,line with the curriculum assessment policy statement from the department of education .The educators said they receive their educational in- service training and done yearly at the department of education workshop and moderations. Findings from this research reveals that learners learns one way or the other through all the strategies of learning but most learners affirms that they learn more rehearsal where they have to repeat things more and that the physical sciences teacher should have more time and explain thoroughly particular term, using diagrams and illustrations in order to make them understand in all subject. The study concluded by giving general recommendations for improving learners’ participation and attitudes towards learning physical Science. Recommendations for improvement in the areas identified were III provided and topics for future research on the curriculum of Grade 10 Physical Sciences were suggested in order to improve on physical science.

Examining the influence of extrinsic factors on herbivore assemblage composition in a southern African savanna

- Description: Globally, herbivore populations have become threatened by the effects of a growing human population. This has resulted in over-hunting, habitat encroachment, fragmentation and degradation and competition leading to the replacement of wild herbivore populations with livestock. African herbivores, in particular, have experienced a severe decline in abundance and distribution, and vast conservation management efforts are underway to preserve herbivore populations and promote their growth. However, conservation management efforts sometimes have unintended consequences on the abundance and distribution of herbivores as a result of the complex interactions they have with their ecosystem. The aim of this study was to: 1) examine the drivers of herbivore distribution at the Satara section of Kruger National Park (hereafter ‘KNP’) at a landscape scale, to determine assemblage composition under the constraints of different environmental attributes; and 2) examine feeding selection by grazing herbivores of different morpho-physiological characteristics at a patch scale of differing environmental attributes. To achieve this, thirty-six experimental plots were established at three distances from water at Satara, and manipulated by mowing, mowing and fertilising or fertilising only over the course of a year, to account for seasonal effects. Each plot was fitted with a camera trap which ran for five weeks in each sampling season, and the data collected focussed on eleven herbivore species of differing body size, digestive strategy and feeding preference. These species were selected due to their abundance at Satara, and their representation of a variety of morpho-physiological characteristics. To achieve both aims, generalised linear models were used to determine the probability of occurrence of a functional type (for aim 1- Chapter 3), and individual species (for aim 2- Chapter 4). To construct the generalised linear models for Chapter 3, hypotheses about species’ relative distribution and abundance were developed through a literature review of forage and water availability constraints on feeding preference and body size of herbivore biomass at a landscape scale. I expected strong seasonal relationships between vegetation biomass and quality, and biomass of water-dependent herbivores with increasing distance to water. My analyses of herbivore distribution across the region confirmed broad-scale descriptions of interactions between forage requirements and water availability, across a set of species which differ in functional traits, at a landscape scale. In Chapter 4, trends in probability of occurrence by seven grazing herbivore species were determined using camera trap data at a patch scale. My results showed that season was a major determinant of species distribution, especially those which are not obligate grazers or feed exclusively in the 0.5 km to 2 km zone from water. I found that most selective feeding occurred in the late wet season when water would be more evenly distributed across the landscape and forage resources close to water would have had the chance to recover from depletion as a result of dry season use. The collective efforts of this study show that distance from water was a critical determinant of herbivore distribution across the landscape, and that forage utilisation by small mixed-feeders and large grazers in particular, altered significantly across seasons. This has important implications for the provision of artificial water, given that foraging pressure is increased closer to water. Landscape heterogeneity needs to be maintained through efficient water provision, to allow areas of forage reserve to maintained in the dry season, where species are constrained by water availability and forage quality and quantity.

- Description: This dissertation examines the treatment and perceptions of black South African accents in English in the drama departments of specific institutions of higher learning in the Western Cape Province. The researcher is concerned with the handling of African native cultural identities in the curriculum policy of Drama Departments in higher education institutions in the Western Cape Province. Although the focus of the research is on the institutions that are based in the Western Cape Province, the subjects that are being discussed are representatives of black people in South Africa as a whole. To portray the issue of accents appropriately, the examination does often refer to language as a relatable concept. In the literature of this dissertation, there is ample support for the claim that language differences and disagreements in South Africa are due to the historical and socio-political stance of the European native. After examining the topic of power and social control, the study points out that the native is rarely in control of the interests of the European descendent. Thus, the relationship between the two is immediately assumed before it has even been established. For the purpose of this discussion, ambiguity is appreciated when intimacy between cultures evolves for the greater good. However, it is disregarded when individual voices are diluted into neutral or standard representations of a language. And so the act of reducing black South African accents in English to mirror that of the Euro-American culture robs the natives of their individuality and imprisons them into cultural assimilation. Ultimately, this study intends to identify different groups of black South Africans who speak English with accents. For clarity has divided into two separate groups namely privileged and unprivileged. Accents that are appreciated by white South African English speakers are considered to be privileged, while accents that carry the undertones of any mother-tongue language are recognised in this research study as unprivileged. The study wishes to present this phenomenon as a social issue that will negatively affect the growth of indigenous participation in performance spaces in the Western Cape which the study assumes as the context for the research. The implication of the study is to potentially eliminate issues of inferiority to those black South African accents that have been regarded as less valuable to dramatic performances in the Western Cape, to the extent that platforms of dramatic performances will broaden in order for black South African accents to be prioritised with relevant usage

Expectations and experiences of talent management across South Africa and the effect on retention

- Description: The “war on talent” is intensifying and effective talent management strategies are imperative for business success. This study explores the expectations and experiences of talent management strategies amongst employees across South Africa and their impact on retention. The literature review covers the constructs of talent management, working environment, rewards, leadership, race, age and gender as well as retention. A quantitative survey approach with comparative studies was adopted. A snowball convenience sampling method was used with links to an on-line questionnaire e-mailed to potential respondents. A total of 711 useable responses were received. Statistical analysis included factor analysis, Cronbach alpha reliability testing, mean factor scores, paired samplet-tests, Pearson’s correlations, T-tests and ANOVAs. The study found that leadership was the factor rated as most important followed by working environment and development. Respondents reported significant differences between expectations and employer ratings on all factors, with cash rewards being the greatest source of dissatisfaction. Experiences of work environment, leadership and development indicated stronger correlations to retention than cash rewards. Women, millennials and non-whites demonstrated the highest retention risks. A significant negative correlation was found between the respondents’ reported experience of leadership, work environment and development and the importance they attached to cash rewards. The study supports Hertzberg’s classification of cash rewards as a hygiene factor and Alderfer’s ERG theory’s concept of frustration-regression. This has significant implications for the focus of talent and retention strategies, and it is proposed that improving the quality of leadership, work environments and development opportunities will decrease the current over-reliance on monetary rewards as a retention tool.

- Description: Family planning is a broad term that encompasses the provision of contraceptive methods to sexually active women or girls and includes fertility planning. Despite the widespread availability of knowledge about modern contraception, many young people do not use contraception or use it inconsistently and incorrectly. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of female adolescents attending community health centres regarding contraceptive usage. The study also intended to provide recommendations to the district health office and facility managers at community health centres regarding care and support of adolescents concerning their use of contraceptives. The study utilised a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research design. The target group comprised of female adolescents attending community health centres in Buffalo City Health District, for contraceptive and adolescentfriendly services. A purposeful sampling technique was used to select the community health centres in the study and the researcher used convenience sampling to select participants at each community health centre. The researcher used semi-structured interviews to interview the participants regarding their experiences of using contraceptives. Tesch’s thematic method of data analysis was used to analyse the data. The researcher adhered to all the ethical principles of the Belmont Report while conducting the study. The analysed data indicated the issue of access to contraceptives and their usage as a challenge to many female adolescents attending the community health centres in Buffalo City Municipality. Adolescents expressed a range of negative emotions regarding the consequences of not using contraceptives and some also complained about the side effects of using contraception. Some adolescents felt that nurses did not always provide them with quality care, while others experienced receiving patient-centred, holistic care from clinic nurses, as well as health education regarding contraceptive usage from nurses and life orientation teachers. However, female adolescents called for an increase in reproductive health education at clinics and hospitals. They also expressed the need for regular school involvement regarding the education of adolescents on the various aspects of contraceptive usage. Hence, it is hoped that the recommendations from this study will assist the DoH to better assist adolescent females with contraceptive usage.
