Experience-based lessons from males in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth on factors that has protected them from becoming involved in gangsterism

- Description: Limited research exists, both internationally and in the South African context, on factors protecting community members from becoming involved in gangsterism. This phenomenon has been found to be more prevalent in so-called ‘coloured’ communities and predominantly amongst males. Existing research on gangsterism mainly focus on the history and origin of gangsterism, risk factors that cause certain youth to be more vulnerable in becoming involved in gangs, and specific interventions aimed at curbing the phenomenon. The proposed study therefore aimed to explore and describe the experience-based lessons from selected males on factors that have protected them from becoming involved in gangsterism. The study employed a qualitative research approach that was explorative, descriptive and contextual in design. Participants were chosen through a purposive sampling technique and data was collected using semi-structured interviews. The trustworthiness of the research process and the findings was enhanced by employing a variety of data verification strategies. The study utilised the Ecological Systems and Resilience models as theoretical lenses. The study found that the benefits of family support, influence of faith or religion, positive role models and opportunities for furthering one’s education could be cited amongst the factors that protected participants from becoming involved in gangsterism. Amongst the recommendations of the study was lobbying for tertiary education specifically for young boys from previously disadvantaged communities plagued by social ills such as gangsterism, the restoration of disintegrated family units through the assistance of professionals, as well as the restoration and strengthening of the role of spiritual leaders in their involvement in the moral regeneration of communities. It is anticipated that findings of this study will be helpful in understanding the factors that protected males from becoming involved in gangsterism and make recommendations on how these protective factors could be strengthened so as to prevent more males from becoming involved in gangsterism.

The effect of casuarina trees on sea turtles nesting beaches throughout the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia regions: A beach vulnerability assessment

- Description: Rapid global change and anthropogenic modification of natural habitats are threatening ecosystems across the globe. Many of these threats and adverse impacts are concentrated on the world’s coastlines, with a large portion of the global population choosing to live next to the coast. To accommodate coastal populations and their related activities, the dynamic littoral active zone is often stabilized with hard engineering structures such as sea walls, which disrupt coastal ecological processes. Most natural coastal processes have since become natural disaster risks to the anthropogenically-modified coasts. Coastal stabilization has led to “coastal squeeze” with modified shorelines unable to respond naturally to changes in sea level. Furthermore, global change through global ‘warming’ exacerbates sea level rise. The combined impacts result in permanent/episodic inundation and coastal erosion, which may damage human settlements and degrade or destroy coastal habitat. As an alternative to hard armouring structures like sea walls, ‘soft’ options like large-scale plantations of trees as bio-shields are used as a ‘green’ option to protect developed coasts. Indeed, green shelter belts have rapidly increased since the December 2004 tsunami event in the Indian Ocean and South-East Asian (IOSEA) region. Extensive portions of the coastal habitat, including sensitive sea turtle nesting habitat, have been modified by planting exotic vegetation. Two invasive species, Casuarina equisetifolia and Casuarina glauca, are regularly used for coastal dune stabilization or as bio-shields because they are adapted to arid conditions, high salinity and low soil fertility typical of beach systems. The functionality of Casuarina trees as a ‘comprehensive’ coastal protection tool, however, has yet to be tested and the effects of Casuarina on sandy beach ecosystems remain largely unquantified. There is no empirical evidence to support the claim that Casuarina trees adequately function as a storm protection measure, and other studies have suggested that Casuarina species have adverse effects on sandy beach ecosystems, including the promotion of erosion in some instances and negative impacts on fauna, including sea turtles. This study investigated the potential value of non-native Casuarina trees as a coastal protection measure on sea turtle nesting beaches taking into consideration the potential impacts of global change. First, the study estimated local scale effects of Casuarina trees within the South African sea turtle nesting rookery in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park by measuring impacts on back-beach substrate characteristics and shape. A few metrics were unaffected, such as grain size, sand penetrability and sand moisture, but sand pH and sand temperature were significantly lower underneath Casuarina stands. A mean pH of 8.2 and a median temperature of 26 ± SD1.5oC were recorded under Casuarina trees and a pH of 9 and a median temperature of 27.2 ± SD1.9oC under native vegetation. The significantly lower, more stable average temperature underneath Casuarina trees may have significant implications for sex ratios of sea turtles as the sex of sea turtles is determined by temperature; Temperatures above 32°C will yield all females and temperatures below 28°C will produce only males, with a pivotal temperature at which a 1:1 sex ratio is developed is about 29°C. Furthermore, sand temperature underneath Casuarina trees is less likely to reach lethal temperatures (above ~33°C) that could lead to hatchling mortality than in areas with no vegetation. So, in terms of hatchling success, the thermal environment created by Casuarina trees might be favourable in extremely hot climate areas, especially when considering the effects of climate change. Casuarina trees, however, affect back-beach and dune dynamics by altering sand movement. Semi-quantitative and qualitative analyses of beach profiles suggested that Casuarina trees and shrubs result in wind scouring directly in front of the foredunes as evidenced by the concave shape in front of Casuarina stands at some sites. Sites with natural vegetation had mainly convex beach shapes, suggesting sand accretion. Either way, vegetation had an important effect on sand dynamics (both positive and negative) where areas with no vegetation (bare sand) only had a neutral/straight shape. There was, however, a significant interaction between vegetation type and site, indicating that vegetation type alone cannot account for all the differences in beach profile dynamics and that site-specific conditions like wave height, sand budget, precipitation and orientation differences among locations may also have an effect. The second part of the study had a regional perspective, investigating the effect of Casuarina trees on 50 sea turtle nesting beaches across the Indian Ocean South East Asia (IOSEA) region. The study first derived an appropriate (novel) beach vulnerability index using features that drive beach erosion. The index was then applied to 50 turtle rookeries in the presence/absence of Casuarina trees. The study noted the extensive distribution of exotic Casuarina trees throughout the IOSEA region and established that 28% of the 50 selected sea turtle nesting beaches had non-native Casuarina present. There was no significant difference in the erosion vulnerability of beaches with and without Casuarina based on the existing indicators. However, the study did show that seven important sea turtle rookeries were highly vulnerable to erosion, some with extensive exotic Casuarina stands. Olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) nesting beaches in India, were dominated by Casuarina trees and were highly vulnerable to erosion. The study showed that the presence of Casuarina trees alone could not be viewed as an indicator of erosion but could be a contributing factor, as several other drivers like narrow back-beach width, absence of dunes and development on exposed coasts prone to storms, also contribute to the high erosion vulnerability of beaches. The study questions the use of exotic vegetation, such as Casuarina species, for coastal protection by demonstrating local scale effects on the back-beach environment and provides a comprehensive overview of the erosion potential of sea turtle nesting beaches throughout the IOSEA region.

Close readings of poems to establish the rhyme patterns, the rhythm and metre, as well as the different poetic forms used by the poet will be discussed and analyse within the context of the collection as a whole. In the addendum to the dissertation the researcher will include a selection of her own poems based on an engagement with the poetic devices used by Hugo. This is one of the first dissertations dealing exclusively with Hugo’s poetry.

A major cause for concern is the increase in risky sexual behaviour in the adolescence and young adult (15-24 year) age group. In various cultures, women’s socialization has a direct impact on their ability to prioritize their sexual health. Steeped in patriarchal ideology, many South African cultures prioritise the power of masculinity over and above the femxle experience. Improved partner communication leads to decreased risky sexual behaviour, but it becomes tricky when the relationship is characterized by a gender power imbalance. This study is aimed at understanding South African femxle sexual health by focussing on 1) the extent to which the overarching traditional beliefs about femininity is related to their sexual self-efficacy. Furthermore, it is aimed at 2) the extent to which they engage in sexual activity and behaviour that would protect them from STIs and unwanted pregnancies. Research design is quantitative and include an online survey for femxle students between the ages of 18 and 24, enrolled at the Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. The data was analysed statistically, where after the research findings will be interpreted from the perspective of Feminist Psychological Theory.

- Description: South Africa is characterised by high levels of HIV infections and unwanted pregnancies, despite the vast amount of interventions aimed at combatting this issue. It becomes important to explore why these interventions are not actively achieving what they aim to. A major cause for concern is the increase in risky sexual behaviour in the adolescence and young adult (15-24 year) age group. In various cultures, women’s socialization has a direct impact on their ability to prioritize their sexual health. Steeped in patriarchal ideology, many South African cultures prioritise the power of masculinity over and above the femxle experience. Improved partner communication leads to decreased risky sexual behaviour, but it becomes tricky when the relationship is characterized by a gender power imbalance. This study is aimed at understanding South African femxle sexual health by focussing on 1) the extent to which the overarching traditional beliefs about femininity is related to their sexual self-efficacy. Furthermore, it is aimed at 2) the extent to which they engage in sexual activity and behaviour that would protect them from STIs and unwanted pregnancies. Research design is quantitative and include an online survey for femxle students between the ages of 18 and 24, enrolled at the Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. The data was analysed statistically, where after the research findings will be interpreted from the perspective of Feminist Psychological Theory.

- Description: A series of oxidovanadium(IV) complexes based on the ligand, 2-(2’-hydroxyphenyl)imidazole, with substituent groups of different electronegativities on the phenolic para position, were successfully synthesized, characterized and investigated for their catalytic activities in the oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT), a typical refractory sulfur compound found in fuel. It was observed from catalytic oxidation studies that the presence of an electron withdrawing group on the phenolic para position of the ligand results in higher catalytic activity. SC-XRD data and DFT studies were used to explain the trends in activity observed. The highest activity was observed with 6.5 nmol of the nitro derivative catalyst [VO(PIMNO2)2] when 100% of 100 mg (0.543 mmol) of DBT was converted to its sulfone derivative dibenzothiophene sulfoxide (DBTO2) using 2.0 mL (1.05 mmol) of t-BuOOH. Potential to immobilize the complex catalysts was demonstrated through the synthesis of oxidovanadium(IV) copolymer nanofibers. The oxidovanadium nanofibers were successfully employed in the oxidation of sulfur compounds in a real fuel sample (diesel 500) which were then removed through solvent extraction using acetonitrile to give clean fuel. SC-XRD, EPR and UV-Vis spectroscopy were instrumental in providing insight into the mechanism of the catalyzed reaction. Vanadium oxides were also investigated as a cheaper alternative for the catalytic oxidation reaction. Phases of different vanadium oxides were synthesized by calcining NH4VO3 in air at different temperatures with an intention to investigate them for their catalytic activities. The catalyst obtained from calcination at 600⁰C was predominantly the orthorhombic phase of V2O5. Potential to immobilize the vanadium oxides was demonstrated using a silica support where NH4VO3 was impregnated onto silica and calcined in air at 600⁰C. The catalyst showed good potential in the oxidation of DBT to DBTO2, with 10 mg (43.9 μmol) of catalyst successfully converting 100% of 100 mg (0.543 mmol) DBT to DBTO2 using 2.0 mL (1.05 mmol) of t-BuOOH. Determining productivity, residual damage and cost of two alternative harvesting systems in pinus elliottii thinning

- Description: Pinus elliottii is the second most dominant softwood grown in the South African plantation forestry industry. It possesses desirable timber characteristics and is useful for production of solid wood products. In the silviculture of softwoods (grown for solid wood products), thinning is an important tending operation. It is necessary for stand hygiene and volume increment of residual trees through the creation of growing space. The selection of a suitable harvesting system for thinning is vital. The system of choice has to attain higher productivity, cause the least damage to residual trees and must be cost effective. From as early as 2000 the South African forestry industry witnessed a general shift towards the use of fully mechanised cut-to-length harvesting systems. This has been a result of high labour turnover, increased labour costs, increased timber demand and the effects of HIV and AIDS on forestry workers. With this recent introduction of mechanised systems, they have not been benchmarked against conventional harvesting systems. In this regard, two harvesting systems were studied side-by-side for productivity, residual damage and cost in a seventh row second thinning operation in P. elliottii stands. First thinnings generate poor financial returns since small trees are harvested and they have a relatively low financial value but have a relatively high operational cost per unit harvested. The second thinning operation is usually the thinning operation that is most likely to result in an intermediate financial return for the organisation, hence the need to benchmark these harvesting systems during the second thinning. These systems were a fully mechanised cut-to-length (CTL) and a semi-mechanised tree length (TL) system. The fully mechanised system comprised of a harvester (felling) and a forwarder (extracting) and the semi-system consisted of felling by chainsaw, tractor extraction, roadside processing by chainsaw and stacking by three-wheeled logger. Two uniform compartments planted with P. elliottii were selected for the study. A total number of 32 plots (16 plots per compartment) were marked and randomly assigned between the two treatments, each plot comprised of seven rows, with the middle row clear-cut and three rows on either side, where marked trees were selectively removed. Within each plot, the number of removal trees ranged from 80 to 105. The diameter, height and form of each removal tree were measured to determine tree volume and ultimately determine productivity. Before analysis, plot characteristics were compared to determine if conditions were equal for both treatments using the Mann-Whitney test at alpha level ˂ 0.05. There was a statistically significant difference in total operator efficiency between the two systems (p ˂ 0.0001). The fully mechanised system attained higher levels of productivity than the semi-mechanised system (15.58 m3/SMH versus 5.26 m3/SMH, for felling and 15.56 m3/SMH versus 5.29 m3/SMH, for the extraction operation). Operator productivity comparisons were restricted to the two harvester operators, and one operator achieved 16.9 m3/SMH while the other operator achieved 14.3 m3/SMH. Different operator working technique contributed to the productivity differences with one operator spending (on average) four seconds less per tree on the fell-process work element. Residual tree damage was assessed immediately after all felling and extraction had taken place. Damage size was measured as ellipse surface area. For each record of residual damage, the damage type was noted, damage position along the stem, and tree position from extraction trail. The most predominant damage type was bark peel. The motor-manual system caused five per cent damage and the fully mechanised system inflicted only three per cent damage to the residual trees. Residual tree damage from the semi-mechanised system mainly occurred at the root zone, and occurred more frequently on edge trees. The mechanised CTL system was characterised by high investment and operational costs. The mechanised system incurred 3037.75 R/SMH while the semi-mechanised system incurred 1667.10 R/SMH. The difference in total costs per year between both systems was 56.29 per cent, with the fully mechanised system being more expensive. The high capacity and the superior technology of mechanised harvesting systems may not be fully exploited in thinnings, therefore harvesting systems with lower capital costs and reasonable productivity can be competitive.

- Description: Malaria remains a major health concern with a complex parasite constantly developing resistance to the different drugs introduced to treat it, threatening the efficacy of the current ACT treatment recommended by WHO (World Health Organization). Different antimalarial compounds with different mechanisms of action are ideal as this decreases chances of resistance occurring. Inhibiting DXR and consequently the MEP pathway is a good strategy to find a new antimalarial with a novel mode of action. From literature, all the enzymes of the MEP pathway have also been shown to be indispensable for the synthesis of isoprenoids. They have been validated as drug targets and the X-ray structure of each of the enzymes has been solved. DXR is a protein which catalyses the second step of the MEP pathway. There are currently 255 DXR inhibitors in the Binding Database (accessed November 2017) generally based on the fosmidomycin structural scaffold and thus often showing poor drug likeness properties. This study aims to research new DXR inhibitors using in silico techniques. We analysed the protein sequence and built 3D models in close and open conformations for the different Plasmodium sequences. Then SANCDB compounds were screened to identify new potential DXR inhibitors with new chemical scaffolds. Finally, the identified hits were submitted to molecular dynamics studies, preceded by a parameterization of the manganese atom in the protein active site.

There are currently 255 DXR inhibitors in the Binding Database (accessed November 2017) generally based on the fosmidomycin structural scaffold and thus often showing poor drug likeness properties. This study aims to research new DXR inhibitors using in silico techniques. We analysed the protein sequence and built 3D models in close and open conformations for the different Plasmodium sequences. Then SANCDB compounds were screened to identify new potential DXR inhibitors with new chemical scaffolds. Finally, the identified hits were submitted to molecular dynamics studies, preceded by a parameterization of the manganese atom in the protein active site.

The knowledge regarding the medicinal uses of macrofungi in Africa is limited; however, it is believed that Africa may contain a large number of unidentified species of macrofungi. The objectives of this study were to: (i) screen the macrofungal extracts for antimicrobial activity against microorganisms responsible for respiratory diseases (e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HIV-1), (ii) determine the effect of macrofungal extracts on bacterial morphology, (iii) investigate the cytotoxicity of macrofungal extracts against human lung carcinoma cells, and to elucidate the mechanism/s of action of cytotoxicity/anticancer activity. In vitro bioassays for antimicrobial activity included: ρ-iodonitrotetrazolium chloride assays and microplate alamar blue assay (MABA), while the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase colorimetric ELISA and HIV-1 protease fluorometric assay kits were used for anti-HIV activity. Cytotoxicity of the macrofungal species against A549 lung cancer cell line was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, and the IC50 values determined for the most cytotoxic macrofungal spp. The mechanism of cytotoxicity was investigated by cell cycle analysis and fluorescent staining to observe morphological and biochemical changes (i.e. acridine orange, caspase activation). Ethanol extracts of Amanita foetidissima, Gymnopilus junonius, Pisolithus tinctorius, Fomitopsis lilacinogilva, Stereum hirsutum and Pycnoporus sanguineus showed higher antimicrobial activity against the Gram-positive bacteria than aqueous extracts, with S. pneumoniae being the most susceptible. The ethanol extracts of Agaricus campestris, Chlorophyllum molybdites, Gymnopilus penetrans, Pseudophaeolus baudonii and Laetiporus sulphureus exhibited anti-TB (tuberculosis) activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging between 500-1,000 μg/mL. C. molybdites ethanol extract inhibited HIV-1 protease activity (IC50: 49.7 μg/mL). The macrofungal extracts did not inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase activity. Though this area plays an important role in the conservation of natural biodiversity, it has been observed that it is undergoing considerable changes with regards to conditions and composition of vegetation cover. These changes signal a decline in the capacity of the Great Fish River Game Reserve to support wildlife population. In this study, remote sensing was used to investigate multi-temporal changes in vegetation distribution in this particular reserve over a period of 30 years (1982-2012). A supervised classification was carried out to classify four Landsat images including; Landsat TM, Landsat ETM and Landsat 8 imagery of 1984, 1992, 2002 and 2013 respectively to map historical and present vegetation conditions and distribution in the Great Fish River Game Reserve. A comparative examination of the classified images showed that there were significant changes in the composition and structure of vegetation with much of the palatable plant species being driven to extinction. The results showed that herbivory pressure inconjuction with climate variability has subsequently resulted in a decrease of the supporting potential of the reserve to sustain wildlife due to mortality of the most preferred plant species and abundant increase of non-palatable plant species. As grazing and browsing intensity increased, there was a decline in regenerative potential of the selected plant species by wild herbivores and successful increase in abundance of the non-palatable plant species. The results of this investigation suggest that the current increase in wildlife population will facilitate the deterioration of habitat condition to support wildlife up to the point of no recovery.

An institutional framework for expanding into Africa: a focus on global multinational companies

The biggest contributor to this is their lack of understanding and unwillingness to embrace the exceptional dynamics that exist in these countries, which has resulted in the majority of them defaulting to execute their own country’s domestic market strategies, resulting in failure to realise sustainable businesses. A misaligned and inappropriate strategy will fail dismally in terms of long-term sustainability of businesses. Urban & Hwindingwi (2016) took a diverse view in evaluating emerging markets, which will also be implemented in this study. They argued that “[they] see these features of emerging markets as symptoms of underlying market structures that share common, important and persistent differences from those in developed economies. Emerging markets reflect those transactional arenas where buyers and sellers are not easily or efficiently able to come together. The institutional voids make a market ‘emerging’ and are a prime source of the higher transaction costs and operating challenges in these markets”. “Market structures are the products of idiosyncratic historical, political, legal, economic and cultural forces within any country. All emerging markets feature insti-tutional voids, however, although the particular combination and severity of these voids varies from market to market”. In the previous years, corporate leaders and investors globally have pinned their hopes on the African growing story of promise becoming a reality. With a youthful, urbanising inhabitants, plentiful natural resources and a rising middle class; it looks like the continent has the correct components required for long-standing growth, possibly outshining the so-called tiger economies of East-Asia a generation ago. According to the McKinsey Global Institute titled Lions on the Move 2010 report; they forecasted consumer spending within the continent to grow by 40% and move GDPs by $1 trillion between 2008 to 2020. However, there are plenty multinationals that have become disheartened in their pursuit of operating in Africa.

On the characterization of solar cells using advanced imaging techniques

- Description: Photovoltaic (PV) cells are devices capable of producing electricity - in particular, from the abundant resource of sunlight. Solar energy (from PV cells) provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel energy sources such as coal and oil. PV cells are typically strung in series in PV modules to generate the current and voltage required for commercial use. However, PV cell performance can be limited by defects and degradation. Under operational conditions due to mismatch and shading, individual cells within a PV module can be forced to operate in their reverse bias regime. Depending on the severity of the reverse bias and the defects present in the cell, the longevity of the cell and/or the module can be affected. Reverse bias (assuming bypass diodes are absent) can result in localised heating that can affect the encapsulant polymer’s longevity as well as degrade the cell’s performance over time. However, under more severe reverse bias, the cell could fail, drastically affecting the performance of the module. PV cells can be characterised using various opto-electronic non-destructive techniques, this provides a set of powerful tools which allow the application of multiple such techniques to the same sample. Furthermore, this allows for an in-depth study of the device. Dark Current-Voltage (I-V) measurements, Electroluminescence (EL), Infrared (IR) thermography, Light Beam Induced Current (LBIC) measurements, and the associated techniques are all examples of such tools and are used within this study. An experimental setup was developed to perform dark I-V measurements, EL imaging, IR thermography and LBIC measurements. Part of the development of the experimental setup was the design of an enclosure in which to perform all the measurements. The enclosure minimised internal reflection, and isolated the experiment from electromagnetic radiation. Due to the complex mathematical model applied to the I-V curve, an Evolutionary Algorithm was used to determine optimal parameter values for the equation. More specifically, a Genetic Algorithm was used in the Parameter Optimisation (or Extraction) of the dark I-V parameters based upon the two-diode model for PV cells. The resulting parameters give an indication of the material and device quality. However, to determine the spatial distribution of the defects that effect the I-V response of the device, various imaging techniques were utilised. LBIC is a technique that uses a focussed light beam to raster scan across the surface of a PV cell. The local photo-induced current/voltage can then be measured and compiled into a response map. LBIC was used to determine the local current response across the device. The intensity distribution of EL signal is related to the local junction voltage and the local quantum efficiency. EL intensity imaging with a Si CCD camera was used to determine the spatial distribution of features visible both in the forward bias and in the reverse bias. The experimental setup utilised had a micron scale resolution. A voltage dependent approach was utilised to further characterise features observed. In forward bias, the local junction varies across the device due to parasitic resistances such as series and shunt resistance. At higher forward bias conditions (in the vicinity of and higher than maximum power voltage), series resistance becomes a limiting factor. Therefore, utilising a voltage dependent approach allows for the determination of a series resistance map from voltage dependent EL images. In reverse bias, localised radiative processes can be imaged. These radiative processes are related to defects in the device, such as Al stains, FeSi2 needles and avalanche breakdown. The processes are related to highly localised current flow; this causes localised heating which degrades the device. The voltage dependent Reverse Bias EL (ReBEL) imaging was also used to determine the local breakdown voltage of radiative reverse features. Dark IR thermography is a technique used in the identification of high current sites that leads to localised Joule heating, particularly in reverse bias. In this study, thermography was used to identify breakdown sites and shunts. The results of this study allow for an in-depth analysis of defects found in multi-crystalline Si PV cells using the opto-electronic techniques mentioned above. The multi-pronged approach allowed from a comparison of the various opto-electronic techniques, as well as a more in-depth characterisation of the defects than if only one technique was used.

- Description: While the West African sub-region has progressed in its efforts to achieve sustainable development, more intensive efforts are needed to address its developmental constraints. Among these constraints, the fragmentation of the sub-continent into small and landlocked countries remain one of the structural challenges to be faced. For this reason, strengthening regional co-operation and economic integration is a significant part in the improvement of the region’s economic performance. Monetary integration, which involves the use of a common currency within the area, is part of the process of economic integration. This study reflects upon the difficulties experienced by countries within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) without a common currency to facilitate economic growth and development. The study adopted a descriptive methodology and embarked on a thorough analysis of recent and relevant secondary sources. This was done in order to determine the expected effects of a common currency in the community, as well as to evaluate the viability of a single currency in the area. The findings indicate that there are potential gains expected from the establishment of a common currency in the relevant community of countries. These gains are contingent upon the meeting of a number of preconditions. These conditions include, inter alia, the need for a multidimensional approach to regionalism, the sustainability of the fiscal policy framework in the region and a greater convergence of the ECOWAS economies.

- Description: While the West African sub-region has progressed in its efforts to achieve sustainable development, more intensive efforts are needed to address its developmental constraints. Among these constraints, the fragmentation of the sub-continent into small and landlocked countries remain one of the structural challenges to be faced. For this reason, strengthening regional co-operation and economic integration is a significant part in the improvement of the region’s economic performance. Monetary integration, which involves the use of a common currency within the area, is part of the process of economic integration. This study reflects upon the difficulties experienced by countries within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) without a common currency to facilitate economic growth and development. The study adopted a descriptive methodology and embarked on a thorough analysis of recent and relevant secondary sources. This was done in order to determine the expected effects of a common currency in the community, as well as to evaluate the viability of a single currency in the area. Archie Mafeje and the question of philosophy as a liberatory discourse

- Description: This dissertation seeks to articulate a liberatory conception of philosophy which interprets reality on its own terms. It is an attempt to intervene in the practice of philosophy in South Africa, which has continued along colonial lines expressed through the marginality of African philosophy up to the present, to the general neglect of the unjust and divisive social reality that defines South Africa. It is our argument that such a continuity is indicative of outstanding liberation on the part of the indigenous people conquered in the unjust wars of colonisation. Our main task then is to struggle for this liberation at the epistemic level with Archie Mafeje, through an examination of his intellectual works and life as a revolutionary intellectual, as an inspiration and an instance of a liberatory practice of philosophy. We draw on the work of Archie Mafeje to elaborate and defend his account of African Philosophy, as a historically specific expression of the liberatory struggle of Africans against unjust Euro-centric colonial domination. This shall be achieved in three instances. In the first instance, Chapter 1, we trace the history of institutionalised philosophy in South Africa outlining Eurocentrism and mimesis as its defining features. In the second instance, Chapter 2, a history of contemporary African philosophy is outlined as emanative from the question concerning the existence of African philosophy, of which mainstream South African philosophy has largely been ignorant. In the final instance, Chapter 3 and 4, a liberatory practice of philosophy is presented, as a necessary response to this context, with Mafeje’s account of African philosophy defended as such an instance. The birth of the Azanian Philosophical Society is also presented as such an instance and as a challenge to the unchallenged hegemony of white philosophy in South Africa.

Factors contributing to tuberculosis mortality among new tuberculosis patients in Zululand Health District

- Description: During the period ranging from 2011 to 2013, Zululand Health District reported tuberculosis (TB) related mortality cases above the WHO’s norm of 10 percent. This raised concerns because TB is curable even if the person is HIV positive. The overall performance of TB programme in South Africa concealed the actual problem of TB related mortality in the country and most particularly in Zululand Health District. The aim of the study was to examine factors contributing to TB mortality, and the extent of TB related mortality in Zululand Health District. A retrospective, descriptive study was conducted to review records of data on the electronic TB register at the district level in order to ascertain the relationship between TB mortality and the contributory factors associated with TB mortality. The TB data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics to test the null hypothesis at the significance level of p< 0.05. The study was limited to only new patients enrolled between the periods from the 1st January 2012 to the 31 December 2013. The study found that TB/HIV comorbidity was a main factor contributing to mortality among new TB patients. Eighty percent (80%) of all patients who died were HIV positive. Poor CD4 monitoring, delays or failure to initiate TB/HIV comorbid patients was one of the factors associated with mortality (p < 0.0001, OR 0.51) among this cohort of patients. Poor DOT support system significantly (p< 0.0008, OR 0.81) contributed to mortality in this district. The study also found significant association between mortality and failure to initiate comorbid patient on co-trimoxazole prophylaxis (Chi-square =9.1; df=1; p=0.0025). Tuberculosis and HIV comorbidity, and delays or failure to providing antiretroviral therapy to HIV positive patients were the main factors responsible for TB mortality in Zululand Health District. The whole phenomenon was attributable to health worker related factors. Good TB/HIV clinical management guidelines and protocols developed by the Department of Health, and distributed to all health facilities did not alleviate the problem. Support and supervision could translate policies and protocols to action.
