- Description: Vachellia erioloba (camel thorn) is one of South Africa’s economically important tree species and therefore requires further investigation to improve its health and growth. Beneficial soil microbes have positive effects on plants through various mechanisms such as nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilisation, indole acetic acid and siderophore production and biofilm formation. These traits enhance plant growth and protect the host plant against parasitic organisms that are present in soil. The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are well known for their beneficial symbiotic effects on host plants. The objective of this study was to determine the role of AM fungi and associated beneficial rhizobacteria in improving the growth of V. erioloba seedlings. Soil and root samples were collected from a farm in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Fifty-seven bacterial cultures were isolated from the soil and tested for plant growth promoting characteristics. Fourteen isolates showing at least four beneficial traits were molecularly identified using the GenBank database. The AM fungal and bacterial populations in the soil samples were assessed using Illumina sequencing. Sequences were identified using the MaarJAM and GenBank databases, respectively. Three separate pot trials were conducted to determine; 1) the effects of cadmium (Cd) on seedling growth; 2) the individual effects of three selected bacterial isolates and AM fungi alone and combined on seedling growth, and 3) the combined effects of the selected bacteria on AM fungal inoculated and uninoculated seedlings. Of the fourteen isolates the Enterobacter genera was the dominant species identified, with Acinetobacter, Pantoea and Bacillus each having one isolate. All were described as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria. One isolate from each genus, excluding Pantoea, was used in the pot trials. Three genera were identified in the AM fungal population that was assessed, namely Ambispora, Paraglomus and Glomus with Ambispora being the dominant genus. The bacterial population assessed showed a high diversity of bacteria from the Actinobacteria phylum being the dominant group. The results of the heavy metal pot trial showed that the symbiotic relationship between the seedlings and AM fungi increased the seedlings’ health and growth during heavy metal stress. The combination of bacteria and AM fungi increased growth parameters in all the inoculated seedlings, but not when compared to uninoculated seedlings indicating a possible competition for nutrients. The results were influenced by the presence of a nematode, which was suspected to have been seed borne. Further investigations on these interactions are required. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts prepared from six samples of G. lucidum [two commercial products (MG-LZ8 and Medi Mushroom Reishi extract), polar, antler, fruiting body and mycelium] and ten cultivated Ganoderma spp. were screened for bioactivities. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the 2-(4-iodophenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-phenyl-2H-tetrazolium (INT) assay against skin pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae). Cytotoxicity was determined using bisBenzamide H 33342 trihydrochloride/propidium iodide (Hoechst/ PI) staining on the B16F10 melanoma cell line. The 2,2-Diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) assays were used to investigate antioxidant activity. Immune modulatory effects included detection of phagocytic activity and phenotypic changes of RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. The phenotypic macrophage polarisation of the extracts on RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells was tested by treating the cells with the extracts and measuring the fluorescence of cell surface markers. CD86 was used as indicator for the M1 phenotype and CD206 as a general marker for M2 phenotypes. The commercially available and cultivated G. lucidum extracts did not show antibacterial activity within the 0-2mg/mL concentration range tested. The commercially available MG-LZ8 G. lucidum extract expressed cytotoxic activity with an IC50 value of 21.26 µg/mL while the ethanolic conk fruiting body and mycelial G. lucidum extract showed a significant reduction in live cells, indicating anti-proliferative activity. G. destructans mycelial ethanol extract displayed anti-proliferative activity at a concentration of 200 μg/mL which shows great potential as a mycelial extract. All the G. lucidum extracts exhibited free radical scavenging abilities with the Ganoderma spp. showing little to no measurable activity. G. lucidum and Ganoderma spp extracts had similar responses without inflammatory activity for the concentration ranges tested. The extracts did not increase macrophage phagocytic activity using the pHrodo™ Green E. coli iii BioParticles™ Conjugate. G. lucidum and Ganoderma spp. extracts induced macrophage polarisation toward the M2 phenotype, with the G. lucidum antler and conk fruiting body extracts displaying significant activity. Nurses play a pivotal role in determining the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of the healthcare system. Understanding the job satisfaction of professional nurses in public hospitals is critical because it has a direct relationship with turnover rates. The aim of the study was to explore the lived experiences of professional nurses at a public hospital in the Nelson Mandela Bay. The research design was a qualitative, descriptive phenomenological design. The research population for this study was professional nurses in a public hospital of the Nelson Mandela Bay. A non-probability, purposive sampling method was used. The data collection method for this study was face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with the professional nurses. Trustworthiness was based on the four criteria of trustworthiness which are: credibility, dependability, transferability and confirmability. The ethical standards for this study were based on the three principles of the Belmont Report which are respect for persons, beneficence and justice. Professional nurses are important in the health care system because of their provision of adequate health care. Literature has indicated that the public sector hospitals of South Africa have many challenges. The challenges faced by these public sector hospitals may affect the nurses’ job satisfaction, their performance and the quality of care. This study was helpful as it explored the experiences of professional nurses regarding job satisfaction in a public hospital of the Nelson Mandela Bay. The professional nurses highlighted the aspects of their work environment that influenced their job satisfaction and recommendations were made to resolve the situation. These were the need for sufficient staff, adequate salaries, a management-staff bond, continuous development of staff, the need for supervisors to monitor staff tardiness, sufficient resources and their maintenance, improvement of hospital infrastructure and ensuring staff safety. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Governmental and Social Sciences, 2019

Food crops have been used (so far) as the biomass for bioethanol and biodiesel production. This has increased concerns over food security and led to the search for diversification and alternative feedstocks for biofuel production. The use of lignocellulosic materials, the most abundant, low cost and easy feedstock to harvest for bioethanol purpose, involves challenging production processes. Several approaches have been used to facilitate the breakdown of the biopolymer structure to produce fermentable sugars that can be converted to ethanol. Most of the approaches have used high temperatures and pressures and have often led to the production of inhibitors of fermentation. In this study, lignocellulosic materials from grass and newsprint were investigated as sources of biomass for bioethanol production using a chemical route (sulfuric acid hydrolysis) which made use of temperatures below 100°C at normal atmospheric pressure. Fermentation of toxic lignocellulosic hydrolyzates was possible after the development of a method for inhibitors removal. The method used treated wood chips as a stationary phase in a chromatographic column to remove inhibitors. This method is expected to be extended to applications such as in municipal wastewater treatment. Sugar yields of 22.26 and 8.9 g/L of hydrolyzate; and an ethanol yield of 184.5 and 130.4 mg/mL of must were achieved for 5g grass and newsprint respectively using optimum conditions of 2percent H2SO4 at 97.5°C for grass and 0.5percent H2SO4 at 97.5°C for newsprint during the hydrolysis process. Pure cellulose was used as a control for the biomass where 254.1 g/L of fermentable sugars were recovered from soluble cellulose and the yield of ethanol was 201.8 mg/mL. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2009

This study focuses on the Supply Chain Unit in the office of the Premier in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study sought to investigate the classification systems in place that is records management policy, procedure manual and file plans. The legal framework that regulates archives. Data was collected using open-ended questionnaire. The target population of this study included all the officials within the Office of the Premier. The sample of 15 was derived from the supply chain management officials, records management managers and directors. The study adopted a qualitative research methodology, which is multimethod in its orientation, which involves an interpretative, naturalistic emphasis to its subject issue. Findings from the study revealed that the unit had its internal records management policy, an official framework document that outlined the processes involved in organising records within the department. Thus, there are policy frameworks within the department even though not clearly described to other employees, which might lead to risks in the management of records. The study also revealed that most records personnel were not trained to effectively manage records. It was also indicated that there is a lack of proper filing system and or electronic records management system. Hence, for effective and efficient records management, the study recommends the creation of a web-based integrated system for communication and where records can be accessed within one system. The study also recommends proper training of records personnel to mitigate risks. Hence, the study recommends that senior management create and implement a records management program that clearly outlines the procedures of records management, risks factors and how to minimize them. - Description: Local government has a legal obligation and a political responsibility to ensure regular and effective communication with the community. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act 1996 and other statutory enactments all impose an obligation on local government communicators and require high levels of transparency, accountability, openness, participatory democracy and direct communication with the communities to improve service delivery and the lives of all. However, this study was to assess the impact of communication on service delivery and customer satisfaction in the selected municipalities in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The research involved the collection of qualitative and quantitative data through simple random and convenience samplings. The data were collected using survey questionnaires, focus groups and in-depth interviews at two municipalities namely; Lukhanji local municipality and Intsika Yethu local municipality. Subsequently, data were analysed using descriptive and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and through thematic analysis. The findings of this study showed that municipal executive, management, supervisors and the citizens or customers value communication in government because it gives support to service delivery and most of the communication programmes are effective. - Description: Local government has a legal obligation and a political responsibility to ensure regular and effective communication with the community. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act 1996 and other statutory enactments all impose an obligation on local government communicators and require high levels of transparency, accountability, openness, participatory democracy and direct communication with the communities to improve service delivery and the lives of all. However, this study was to assess the impact of communication on service delivery and customer satisfaction in the selected municipalities in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The research involved the collection of qualitative and quantitative data through simple random and convenience samplings. The data were collected using survey questionnaires, focus groups and in-depth interviews at two municipalities namely; Lukhanji local municipality and Intsika Yethu local municipality. Subsequently, data were analysed using descriptive and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and through thematic analysis. The findings of this study showed that municipal executive, management, supervisors and the citizens or customers value communication in government because it gives support to service delivery and most of the communication programmes are effective. Water Struggles and Rural People’s Experiences of Waiting in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province

Primarily, it investigated how such struggles connect to people’s experiences of waiting for water services. In essence, the study demonstrates how experiences of waiting are profoundly shaped by subjective meanings that the rural people attach to water at a local level. Thus, the study connects rural water politics to contested meanings over natural resources in South Africa’s communal areas. The empirical analysis in this study goes beyond the largely urban focus in the focus in the politics of waiting – mainly in the informal settlements, slums and other urban peripheries. The study presents some of the less known struggles of rural dwellers, particularly their experiences of waiting for water service provision from the state. South Africa’s Constitution promotes the right to clean water. Despite all the progress made by the democratic government, it is still evident that people in deep rural areas of South Africa are in a very precarious situation when it comes to accessing clean water. The study utilised Auyero (2011) concept of the politics of waiting to examine the poor people’s experiences of waiting for water. The study adopted a case study of Lower Didimana village. The researcher conducted a range of qualitative research techniques – the key informant interviews, focus group discussions, observations and semi-structured interviews. The study found that rural residents of South Africa continue to wait for long periods for water service provision in the current democratic era. Moreover, they are still faced with severe challenges of accessing water; as a result, they are left with no better option but to use traditional ways of retrieving water. It also found that there are strong cultural and spiritual claims that rural dwellers attach to water. To them water is not just only a physiological need which could be addressed through efficient state service – the provision of sufficient tap water. Water is deeply connected in human existence. Just like land, water is a cultural as well as spiritual resource. As such, rural experiences of waiting are not limited to state agency and how the poor experience the state, but are also influences by local struggles over meanings of water. Finally, the study reveals the limitation in state policy on water provision, which is locked in a purely engineering use based paradigm, which mainly strives to address (technically) scarcity of drinking water. However, the findings of this study demonstrates that drinking is just one function of water. Although villagers try to mobilise to engage the state while waiting for water service they articulate other claims that connect to diverse water meanings. Such meanings are barely captured in contemporary literature on rural politics of water. - Description: This half-thesis reports on an ethnographic investigation of the implementation of the Bilingual-Bicultural Approach for educating Deaf learners, focusing on South African Sign Language (SASL) teaching at the Further Education and Training (FET) level in a South African School for the Deaf in the Eastern Cape. The investigation occurs within the context of the introduction, in 2015, of the SASL Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) by the Department of Basic Education (DBE). The SASL CAPS introduces an approach to teaching the Deaf known as the Bilingual-Bicultural Approach. This is an approach in which natural sign language (such as SASL) is taught first and used to learn a spoken language such as English for reading and writing. Previous research on a contrastive analysis of South African English and SASL reveals that SASL is a Topic-Comment language. It is sometimes Object-Subject-Verb (OSV) or Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) while the word order of South African English is Subject-Verb-Object (SVO). Semi-structured interviews of hearing and Deaf participants reveal serious tensions between the staff and the hearing staff because Deaf culture is not adhered to by some of the hearing staff. These tensions have a negative impact on the culture of learning and teaching at the school. Observations of four lessons at an FET class taught by an SASL FET teacher show that in her teaching, SASL syntax is used in keeping with the principles of the Bilingual-Bicultural Approach. However, her signing is accompanied by unvoiced spoken language due to the influence of a previously used approach called Total Communication (TC). One of the learners, Lulu, who contributes considerably more often than other learners in the lesson, also shows the same influence of TC. Other learners are either withdrawn or copy signs from Lulu. The study concludes with the recommendation that SASL be used for initiating newcomers to school as opposed to Signed English because research in bilingualism suggests that second language learners need one natural language established first before attempting to learn a second language. Teachers are recommended to immerse themselves into Deaf culture to acquire fluency. Retaining a strongly committed workforce has become a top priority for most organisations. Uncovering and addressing components which influence job insecurity helps retain employees. This is key to improving employee job performance. Research purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the moderating effects of decent work on the relationship between employee motivation and job performance using a sample of public service employees in the Eastern Cape Administration. The study aimed at determining the importance of individual-level performance when diagnosing performance issues in the public sector by focusing on the moderating role of decent work on the relationship between employee motivation and job performance. Motivation for the study: The South African public service is noted to undergoing challenges. Notably, affected are aspects related not only to employee motivation but also job performance. Needed are strategies that address these important organisational realities. Calls in the literature advocate the need to pay attention to the potential role of decent work. Research approach/design and method: A quantitative survey was employed using self-administered questionnaires. A total of 250 surveys were distributed. After data cleaning, a total of 188 surveys were deemed usable. Main findings: The overall findings highlighted in this study are that decent work and employee motivation have a positive relationship with job performance. They also have a significant positive influence on job performance. Additionally the research concludes that the three constructs of decent work that include free time and rest, access to health care and safe working conditions have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between employee motivation and job performance. Practical/managerial implications: This implies that there is need to find ways to keep employees motivated so that their job performance can also improve. Policy makers v should come up with effective work place policies which insure that conditions for employee motivation are ensured at work place as well as decent working conditions. This is important because it results in increased productivity and performance by public service employees. Developing a socio- ecological framework for the restoration of estuaries using the Swartkops Estuary as a case study

- Description: The aim of this study was to develop and test a socio-ecological systems framework for the restoration of estuaries in South Africa using the Swartkops Estuary as a case study. This necessitated a review of existing SES frameworks that have been developed for use in other disciplines. As part of the newly developed framework, the Swartkops estuary condition was assessed using the Estuary Health Index to understand the present ecological state (PES) of the estuary following from the last assessment done in 2013/2014. The Estuary Health Index is a nationally accepted method of measuring the health of South African estuaries. The state of the societal system was assessed through field observations, engagements with estuary users on-site, insights provided by the Zwartkops Conservancy, and from recent literature. The potential for restoration of habitats for the purpose of carbon storage was also assessed as part of this study. The suitability of disturbed habitats for stimulating future salt marsh growth was investigated since an important incentive for restoration is blue carbon storage. This is important as blue carbon ecosystems offer great potential as a climate change mitigation measure through their ability to sequester carbon. - Description: The aim of this study was to develop and test a socio-ecological systems framework for the restoration of estuaries in South Africa using the Swartkops Estuary as a case study. This necessitated a review of existing SES frameworks that have been developed for use in other disciplines. As part of the newly developed framework, the Swartkops estuary condition was assessed using the Estuary Health Index to understand the present ecological state (PES) of the estuary following from the last assessment done in 2013/2014. The Estuary Health Index is a nationally accepted method of measuring the health of South African estuaries. The state of the societal system was assessed through field observations, engagements with estuary users on-site, insights provided by the Zwartkops Conservancy, and from recent literature. The potential for restoration of habitats for the purpose of carbon storage was also assessed as part of this study. The suitability of disturbed habitats for stimulating future salt marsh growth was investigated since an important incentive for restoration is blue carbon storage. This is important as blue carbon ecosystems offer great potential as a climate change mitigation measure through their ability to sequester carbon. Recommendations will be made based on the findings of the study. The research findings have shown that the dominant perception expressed by the participants of the CWP was that the program has made a significant contribution to their livelihood. The primary research data also showed that most of the participants utilized the wages received from the programme to buy food, pay for municipal services, pay family educational needs, pay for personal educational needs, demonstrating that the CWP has made a significant contribution to the livelihood of the participants. This study developed a mobile-based home automation system prototype. The system was developed using the waterfall model methodology. To evaluate the developed system, the study used a simulation method. Ten trials were conducted to determine the performance of the implemented system. The mean time to failure was used to evaluate the system’ reliability. The system’s performance analysis revealed that the developed system performed better than the two other approaches; the Bluetooth and ZigBee. The developed system showed a 0 percent error, while the Bluetooth had 8 percent error and ZigBee 6 percent error. The reliability results showed the average lifespan of assets in the system before they could fail. However, the invasive status, risk and insect pollinators that promote their reproduction and dispersal have never been studied in South Africa. This study was aimed at 1) Assessing the risk of, and mapping two Crataegus species, Crataegus monogyna Jacq and C. mexicana DC in South Africa, 2) Determining the role and effectiveness of insects pollinators to fruiting of C. monogyna and C. mexicana, 3) Identifying flower visitors of C. monogyna and C. mexicana, and 4) documenting potential dispersal vectors for both species in the Eastern Cape Province. A framework entitled “Framework and guideline for conducting risk analysis under NEM: BA Alien and Invasive Species Regulation of 2014” was used to assess the risk of the two Crataegus spp, and we conducted field trips to various provinces in SA to map their distribution. The author conducted an exclusion experiment to determine the role and effectiveness of insect pollinators. Observations were conducted to identify flower visitors and potential dispersal vectors for both species. The risk analysis results suggested that both species pose a high risk of becoming invasive in South Africa. The eradication feasibility of both species was found to be medium with C. monogyna having an eradication feasibility score of 5 and C. mexicana having an eradication feasibility score of 4. This meant that there was a 50 percent chance for both species to be eradicated in South Africa currently. After a thorough risk analysis, it was recommended that both species be listed under category 1b on the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act. Category 1b species are invasive species that need to be controlled, and if possible, they must be eradicated, trading of species from this category is not allowed. Crataegus mexicana was found to be widespread in South Africa with ten relatively small populations distributed in 5 provinces; Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Eastern Cape Province. Crataegus monogyna was found not to be widespread in South Africa, with only three populations found in the Eastern Cape Province. Insect pollinators contribute to the fruiting of both species in SA. However, the exotic plants were also observed to be able to self-pollinate when insects are excluded. Flowers of C. monogyna were visited by various insect species from orders Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera, while C. mexicana is visited by species from the order Hymenoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Coleoptera. Seventy-seven percent (77 percent) of potential dispersal vectors observed for C. monogyna were birds, and 15 percent were mammals. - Description: The Eastern Cape Provincial Government is comprised of 14 departments, including the Provincial Legislature, and ten (10) public entities. The legislative mandate of Eastern Cape Provincial Treasury (ECPT) is delegated by National Treasury to ensure transparency, accountability and sound financial controls in the management of public finances in accordance with the Constitution, PFMA and Treasury Regulations. The focus of the study is to investigate the perceived leadership style that exists at ECPT. Data was collected by means of a survey questionnaire which consisted of closed questions and distributed to a sample of employees at ECPT who hold positions for senior managers, middle managers and other employees outside these categories, such as administrative assistants. The following leadership styles were examined: Autocratic leadership style, Democratic leadership style, Laissez-faire leadership style and Transformational leadership style. The leadership styles were considered as dependent variables, including Intention to resign, while staff motivation was considered to be the dependent variable. Leadership is described as the social process of persuading people to work towards an institutional goal happily, enthusiastically and persistently. The results of the study revealed autocratic leadership was perceived as the most dominant style that exists at ECPT. Recommendations are made to management to pay attention to the autocratic leadership style as this style has been proven by researchers to have a negative effect on employee motivation. Motivation is described as the force within us that stimulates, directs and sustains our behaviour. The research study further explored the perceptions of employees on motivation. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory was explored as part of the motivation theories. Results based on this theory revealed that the Physiological needs of staff at ECPT are not met. These needs include biological needs such as water, food and air. Chapter 2 of the Constitution of South Africa states that everyone has the right to have access to sufficient food and water. In light of the constitutional requirements on human rights and legislative environment that ECPT operates in, it is recommended that management ensures employees have access to clean water and basic sanitation and accommodation, particularly in the working environment. McClelland’s needs ix theory revealed that staff at ECPT have a high need for achievement, moderate need for power and a low need for affiliation as respondents remained neutral on whether their needs for affiliation were met. It is recommended that management adopts initiatives such as team building, meeting teams regularly to communicate departmental strategies and to involve staff in decision-making and policy updates. The study confirms that when employees are motivated, they go the extra mile in fulfilling responsibilities and by ensuring that staff morale is considered and boosted, ECPT stands to benefit from a motivated workforce that will lead the department in excelling on its mandate of ensuring that the lives of the people of Eastern Cape are improved. - Description: The increasing concern for sustainability in the 21st century has brought about new meanings for city processes, relations and the built environment. Typically, the environmental and economic aspects of the issue have received the most attention, leaving social sustainability largely neglected within the discourse. It could be argued however, that social sustainability is the key to many of the challenges faced by the South African post-apartheid cities. Using primary and secondary research method composed of a qualitative approach, involving site visits, photography and closed interviews, this study examines the nature of spatial segregation in the South African post-apartheid city in relation to Lefevbre’s ideas. Focusing on segregation, this investigation will discuss the forced removals that occurred in South Africa from the mid-1800s, through to the Apartheid Era in the late 1900s, and seek to gain insight into the manner in which these events have shaped the urban landscape of the South African cities. Port Elizabeth, known during apartheid as the Cradle of Black Resistance, was at the forefront of the political struggle in South Africa. For this reason, Port Elizabeth has been chosen for analysis. The site for intervention is the cities’ primary public transport interchange; the gateway into the wealthy southern suburbs from the northern township settlements. This is the point of connection between the divides of the city but is itself a highly disconnected environment. The findings indicate the integration of the existing on-site activities with the new proposed Student Resource Centre functions creates a mixed-use ribbon of activity. These connections facilitate the interaction between students living in the inner city. Typically, the environmental and economic aspects of the issue have received the most attention, leaving social sustainability largely neglected within the discourse. It could be argued however, that social sustainability is the key to many of the challenges faced by the South African post-apartheid cities. Using primary and secondary research method composed of a qualitative approach, involving site visits, photography and closed interviews, this study examines the nature of spatial segregation in the South African post-apartheid city in relation to Lefevbre’s ideas. Focusing on segregation, this investigation will discuss the forced removals that occurred in South Africa from the mid-1800s, through to the Apartheid Era in the late 1900s, and seek to gain insight into the manner in which these events have shaped the urban landscape of the South African cities. Port Elizabeth, known during apartheid as the Cradle of Black Resistance, was at the forefront of the political struggle in South Africa. For this reason, Port Elizabeth has been chosen for analysis. The site for intervention is the cities’ primary public transport interchange; the gateway into the wealthy southern suburbs from the northern township settlements. This is the point of connection between the divides of the city but is itself a highly disconnected environment. The findings indicate the integration of the existing on-site activities with the new proposed Student Resource Centre functions creates a mixed-use ribbon of activity. These connections facilitate the interaction between students living in the inner city. Enterprise development funds as a catalyst for growth and sustainability of black-owned SMMEs in manufacturing

- Description: South Africa is confronted with a skewed economy along racial lines through a history of colonialism and apartheid. The laws of government have tried to include companies in advancing social cohesion and in dealing with issues of the historical exclusion of African communities from the mainstream economy. With the advent of democracy, the government has been faced with the mammoth task of driving transformation and inclusion in various sectors of the economy. Various pieces of legislation have been promulgated to give effect to this ideal. The Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Act with its associated regulations has Enterprise and Supplier development (ESD) as one of the five pillars underpinning the targeted areas for transformation in companies. Enterprise development is a key contributor to companies achieving a good score card rating as determined by the government of South Africa for various industries. This scoring also has advantages in terms of accessing government incentives as well as procurement opportunities for businesses with government. Companies therefore deploy capital for the development of businesses within their supply chains and also any other businesses whether or not they do business with them. This process of enterprise development funding is largely undefined and sees companies use various methods and criteria to deploy the capital with a myriad of outcomes all of which vary depending on the area of interest. The primary intent of the enterprise development funds is to create patient, free and sometimes affordable capital for the growth and sustainability of previously disadvantaged businesses in the South African context. Industries like manufacturing, in their nature are capital intensive and require huge capital outlays which then become a barrier to entry particularly for previously disadvantaged groupings like black people. The aim of the study is to identify key determinants that can unlock the growth and sustainability of black owned SMMEs in the manufacturing sector and also to understand the environment in which they operate. - Description: Globally people are growing older, and nearly every country is experiencing an increase in their ageing populace. In 1960 older people made up 5 % of the world population, while in 2018, they were about 9% of the overall population. Projections are that in 2050 people over the age of 65 will make up 16% of the overall population. To respond to an ageing population, a government must ensure that its policy framework can respond to the needs of its citizens. A society that supports a positive ageing environment improves older people’s well-being. In our complex society, each person is dependent on others in various ways, and social, emotional and practical interdependence is a feature of the human social condition. This means that older people do not function well in isolation but need support for positive ageing. This research project focused on older people’s perceptions of services that support their positive ageing in the Khayelitsha and Gugulethu districts of the Western Cape, South Africa. The theoretical framework employed in the study is Systems Theory. The research approach utilised in the study is qualitative with an explorative and descriptive research design. A non-probability purposive, criterion-based sampling technique was employed. The researcher recruited eleven older persons aged sixty years and above in the Khayelitsha and Gugulethu areas. An NGO that works with older persons’ served as gatekeepers. Semi-structured telephonic interviews were conducted. The data collected was analysed using thematic data analysis. The trustworthiness of the research process was enhanced using Guba’s model. Ethical principles as set out in the Belmont report were also adhered to. The key findings of the current study indicated that in Khayelitsha and Gugulethu areas, there are available services that support positive ageing, such as clubs, excursions and social grants. Environmental aspects challenging positive ageing included unfavourable home conditions such as financial burden and ill-treatment, poverty and unemployment, health problems, and COVID-19 effects. Older people mentioned that there are available but inadequate services such as municipal services and care facilities. Public programming comprises a sequence of strategies for publicizing and marketing archives to the public, which are crucial in archival operations as they promote better use of archives and records. South African National Archives and Records. Services depends on provisions of the National Archives of South Africa Act of 1996 in its strive to promote access and use of archives as sources of information. . unknown and therefore not used to their maximal utility value, likely due to low-key and ineffective archival public programming initiatives. Consequently, the primary purpose of this research study was to evaluate the extent of public programming strategies used by the Eastern Cape Provincial Archives and Records Services (EAPARS). The study used a mixed-method, embracing qualitative and quantitative research approaches. As an integrated record-keeping framework, Record Continuum was used as a theoretical framework to guide the study. Sixteen copies of questionnaire were distributed among staff and users ECPARS. The research uncovered that ECPARS does not have specific regulations and policies on public programming, but relies on the more general provisions of the Provincial Archives and Records Services Act of 1996 as a guiding instrument in executing its public programming operations. The study further revealed various factors, such as the limited budget and inadequate staff, as key hindering factors in the smooth execution of archival public programming plans by ECPARS. The study recommends a review and update by ECPARS of how it can specifically effectively implement the provisions of the 1996 Act to the modern ways of taking public archives to the people. The research also recommends that ECPARS engage additional staff or outsourced services to strengthen its the public programming of its archival resources and services workforce for Eastern Cape Provincial Archives and Records. The study concludes that improved financial resources, use of ICTs, and coherent policy framework, and public awareness creation and education can facilitate better to acquire, widen access to use of its archives.
