- Description: Detpak South Africa is a subsidiary paper and board company of Mpact Limited, formally known as Mondi Packaging South Africa. The Mpact group of companies operates across 31 sites and employs more than 3 700 employees. Detpak South Africa specializes in three respective niche markets: international fast food packaging, industrial packaging and disposables packaging. The primary objective of this study is to propose an operational model for improving customer satisfaction levels within the disposables market for Detpak South Africa. Further, Detpak’s competitive position with respect to customer satisfaction was assessed and an empirical assessment was conducted to identify imperative attributes impacting on overall customer satisfaction. It is noted from marketing journals that providing a quality product at the right price no longer suffices as an adequate value proposition. Numerous authors have noted that there is no longer a difference between a goods market and a service market, in its purest form, and that manufacturers of goods must embrace the principles of service marketing to develop a competitive advantage within the market. A quantitative research was conducted to obtain data. The measuring instrument used to obtain data was a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 84 questionnaires were distributed nationally across South Africa. From the 84 questionnaires a total of 62 questionnaires were obtained from respondents, from which a final sample of n=59 was considered for capturing. Three questionnaires were excluded from the sample due to response error of non-completion. Correlation coefficient analysis was used to calculate the relationships between independent and dependant variables. It was found that all customer satisfaction attributes, listed below, had a positive relationship to overall customer satisfaction: Customer value; Product quality; Price; Communication; Reliability; Responsiveness; Customer service; Sales support. The hypothesized relationship between overall customer satisfaction and customer loyalty was measured and confirmed to be strongly positive. It can be concluded that a positive movement in overall customer satisfaction will be accompanied by a similarly positive movement in customer loyalty. Furthermore, through secondary review it was noted that the retention of existing customers costs much less and is more profitable than the acquisition of new business. The results presented within this study indicate a strong market position for Detpak South Africa in terms of product quality compared against competitive activity, which means a competitive advantage in the market for the company and which will assist in attaining its strategic objectives. The results also identified a number of customer satisfaction attributes which Detpak South Africa could improve to allow them to establish a firm position in the market through the overall improvement of customer satisfaction levels. Finally, an operational model integrating the important concepts identified within the literature study was proposed to assist Detpak South Africa in enhancing levels of perceived customer satisfaction. The model integrates the important business philosophies of customer relations, best practices, continuous improvement and, finally, customer satisfaction attributes.

In addition, Vestal (2009:6) adds that one of the biggest challenges that managers face at the moment, is to find ways to engage employees in the organisation and build a sense of belonging that, hopefully, will support retention and long term commitment. This research study aimed to explore and describe the nature and extent of employee engagement among nursing employees working in private healthcare. This exploration also encompassed five facilitators which are considered to be crucial in the promotion of an engaged workforce. The identified facilitators include: leadership behaviour, working environment, communication, training and development and rewards and recognition. This was attained by using a quantitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research approach. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from nursing employees working in one of the private hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. From the data, the overall degree of employee engagement was established as well as the significance of the five identified facilitators in employee engagement. Based on the analysed data, guidelines for the advancement of employee engagement are proposed that can assist management in the development of employee engagement practices and strategy formulation.

- Description: This thesis explores the difference between the vision of citizenship within education policy and the actual experiences and understandings of citizenship by Matric learners. Citizenship as envisioned in policy is shown to differ significantly to citizenship as understood and experienced by the interview participants. The citizenship envisioned in policy presents the goal of an equal and united citizenry whereas interview participants described citizenship as unequal and hierarchical. In particular, the racial hierarchy enforced under Apartheid was found to dominate the learners’ experiences of citizenship. Despite progressive legislation, distribution of opportunities remains heavily weighted in favour of those in high-income environments. Education policies that determine the overall structure of the South African education system were selected for analysis. These are the Constitution, the South African Schools Act and the National Education Policy Act. These policies are analysed and a vision of South African citizenship is described as possessing the following characteristics. A common, equal citizenship in a united and transformed South Africa. A citizenship encouraging and mandating critical engagement, dialogue, openness and transparency. A citizenship founded on quality of life for all and developing the potential of each individual. A citizenship in which both state and citizen are responsible and accountable and operate within the rule of law. A citizenship underpinned by human dignity and freedom and security of the person. A citizenship in which there is respect for difference and self-determination and in which ‘unity in diversity’ plays a key role. Matric learners were drawn from three different schools in an area of Kwazulu-Natal. Each of these schools represents a ‘type’ of school in South Africa: a former Model C school, an independent school and a school based in a rural or township area. The interviews aimed not only to understand citizenship from the perspective of these learners, but also to understand how experiences of citizenship varied depending on race, gender and class.

Support should be rendered effectively at school level within a well-established and functioning Institutional Level Support Teams (ILST). Institutional Level Support Teams (ILSTs) at primary schools within the Uitenhage District seem to be problematic, since parents, the school and the community do not realise that they should work interrelated with each other to enhance the effective establishment and functioning of the ILST. The main aim of this study is, therefore, to formulate guiding principles for the effective establishment and functioning of Institutional Level Support Teams. A qualitative research design using a phenomenological strategy was deemed appropriate for this study, as the researcher wants to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon under study. The researcher used a combination of convenience sampling, as well as purposive and judgement sampling. The sample group included educators, members of the Institutional Level Support Teams, Institutional Level Support Team co-ordinators, School Principals, community members and members of the District Based Support Team (DBST). Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews, participant observations and questionnaires. Tesch’s eight step data analysis process was employed to identify possible common themes. The findings indicated that the stakeholder component of the social system representing learners, parents, schools and the community, do not provide sufficient support to learners experiencing learning challenges and therefore ILSTs are not functioning optimally presently.. Therefore the researcher provided supportive guiding principles to parents, the school and the community, for the effective establishment and functioning of the ILST, based on Bronfenbrenner’s eco-systemic theory, which is the theoretical framework of this study.

The effect of in vitro digestion on selected biological activities of Hypoxis sobolifera corms

- Description: In South Africa part of the cultural and religious beliefs of the African people is the use of traditional remedies to treat diseases. These remedies are obtained from medicinal plants (Steenkamp, 2003). One of the most frequently traded plants in the Eastern Cape is Hypoxis, commonly known as Afrika patat, or African potato. South African traditional healers instruct patients to brew the fresh Hypoxis corm as a tea and then ingest it (Steenkamp, 2006a). This prompted an investigation into the digestive stability of a traditionally prepared Hypoxis extract. The H. sobolifera extracts were digested using a simulated gastric/small intestinal digestion and their biological activity determined. The hot water H. sobolifera extract before digestion only showed cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines at very high concentrations which are not likely to be achieved under normal ingestion circumstances. In Chang liver cells on the other hand, chronic exposure to the hot water H. sobolifera extract increased glucose uptake in amounts similar to that of metformin. On the negative side, the glucose utilization stimulation was lost due to the simulated digestion process. The significant inhibition of AGEs by hot water H. sobolifera extract (IC50 of 6.3 Ig/ml) is a very encouraging result as treatment in the management of diabetes. This activity was only slightly reduced by the in vitro digestion process. Also observed was enzyme inhibition activity by traditionally prepared H. sobolifera, with ∝-amylase being inhibited (IC50 of approximately 250 Ig/ml) and therefore preventing or limiting starch breakdown. From the DPPH results it was clear that H. sobolifera, even when digested, is a potent anti-oxidant (IC50 of 134.4 Ig/ml when undigested compared to 162.9 when digested with β-glucosidase added to stomach digestive step). HPLC and TLC experiments revealed that rooperol which has previously been thought to be the compound responsible for the anti-oxidant activity in Hypoxis extracts, was absent from the traditional extract of H. sobolifera and therefore cannot be the sole compound exhibiting anti-oxidant activity; other compounds such as phenolics may be contributing. The phenolic and flavonoid content results revealed very highconcentrations of these compounds in the traditionally prepared H. sobolifera extract. These compounds may therefore play major roles in all of the biological activities observed from treatment with Hypoxis spp. The ROS results yielded interesting and promising results. Using standard or traditionally prepared H. sobolifera extracts, activation of differentiated U937 cells with PMA was greatly enhanced by cotreatment with the extracts, while extracts on their own did not cause significant activation. Future studies should investigate this property of the extracts as a promising immune boosterThe HPLC results showed that hypoxoside was undetectable in the hot water traditional extract and the TLC anti-oxidant experiment proved that rooperol is not present in the hot water traditional extract after treatment with β-glucosidase. This indicates that neither one of the Hypoxis compounds previously believed to be responsible for the biological activities observed are present in the extract when prepared the traditional way. - Description: The research emanated from an investigation of GB7, GB8 and GB9 main contractors in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study was focussed on the strident economic times in the construction industry following the FIFA Soccer World Cup from August 2010 to December 2012. The research was conducted to identify the key strategy or combination of strategies keeping construction entities in operation. The study further investigates the key elements of a successful turnaround strategy as well as the most effective methods in implementing strategies within construction organizations. The research took the form of an empirical quantitative study where a descriptive survey was used to collect data. Structured interviews were held with the target population to collect data in the field. The study established that geographic diversification was the most effective method utilized by main contractors for survival during the study timeframe. The study also found that lowering of profit margins and preliminary and general amounts were most effective methods in the use of turn around strategies. The study finally concluded that effective steps were taken by main contractors in the Eastern Cape to implement corporate strategies within their organizations. Step by step guidance to all employees on new processes was the key element in successful strategic implementation of a strategy within construction organizations. The research conducted contributes to the strategic management competency within the built environment as well as the existing body of knowledge within the construction industry. All members of the construction industry in South Africa involved with strategic level planning of entities would value the study.

Traumatised individuals are at risk but may remain undiagnosed and untreated. It makes sense for first line and primary health care practitioners (i.e., not highly qualified psychological practitioners) to screen for risk since they have the initial contact with trauma individuals. A relatively easy screening instrument that can be administered time efficiently would be useful in this regard. The principles of this instrument are that it needs to be objectively measurable, quick and easy to administer. No consistent measure geared towards identifying risk factors in such a manner immediately post trauma currently exists in South Africa. Objectives: The overall aim was to start a process of designing a psychometric instrument that is valid in predicting the development of traumatic stress. Since this is the initial stage of constructing a new measure, content validity was of utmost importance. It became imperative to ensure that items were not only relevant and appropriate, but also accurate and capable in identifying at-risk individuals. The proposed end goal is to develop effective identification strategies in South Africa geared towards helping victims of traumatic events. Method: A pilot psychometric questionnaire was compiled using three major international reviews, South African research on known risk factors, and literature on PTSD risk assessment considerations. This preliminary assembled item pool was used as a departure point and evaluated quantitatively as well as qualitatively by expert reviewers who have research and/or clinical experience with PTSD in a South African context. Their feedback resulted in either the omission or the modification of certain items; for some items, further exploration was recommended. The questionnaire was further scrutinised and modified accordingly after qualitative interviews with and critical feedback from the intended administrators or primary health care professionals, namely Registered Counsellors (RCs) and/or nursing staff from a participating general government hospital and a non-government organisation. Findings: Expert reviewers did not agree consistently across all the items. At times they rated certain items as relevant according to the necessity of the information rather than with regards to the relevance of the content of the item – in terms of prediction of PTSD. It was also observed that intended administrators did not always agree with expert reviewers.

- Description: Friction Taper Stud Welding (FTSW) is a relatively new solid state welding process, developed from the concepts of friction welding, which theoretically operates below the melting temperatures of the material being welded. During friction welding, heat is generated by conversion of mechanical energy into thermal energy at the interface of the work pieces, during rotation under pressure. Quality welds are dependant on the correct selection of welding process parameters, which are currently chosen empirically, and the FTSW evaluated by mechanical testing. This method is time consuming, uneconomical and could cause that optimised conditions are overlooked. A proposed solution would be to numerically model the process, but reference to successful computational modelling of the FTSW process is currently not available and data regarding the responses during the process are limited. The ultimate aim of the present study is to develop a finite element model to simulate the FTSW process using AISI 4140 medium carbon low alloy steel, delivering temperature profiles and hardness predictions through the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) – using a combined experimental and numerical study. To achieve the objectives of this study a systematic approach was adopted and conducted in several phases. A weld matrix was configured with ranging weld input parameters to determine the affect of weld input parameters on real-time responses. To provide a relationship between these factors, welding was conducted using a portable friction taper stud welding platform linked to a control and data logging system for measuring the real time axial forces, spindle speed, material displacement, torque and temperature responses as a function of time. The input process parameters applied being motor speed, axial forces, displacement and forging time. The temperature distribution through the weld, by direct measurement, as a function of weld time and position is investigated. During the experimental welds temperature responses, as influenced by welding parameters, were recorded using embedded N-Type thermocouples at various locations in the near vicinity of the weld interface. The main hot spots during welding were identified to be close to the top surface just before weld completion and at the bottom centre surface of the plug weld at the interface line. All the welds showed similar trends and a maximum temperature of 1078°C at the bottom of the weld was reached for a rotational tool speed of 5160rpm, axial friction force of 15kN and displacement of 6.5mm, due to the heat generated by friction between the tool and weld coupon. The weld torque increase rapidly at the start of the weld and reached a peak value shortly after the start of the weld, while a peak temperature of 1366°C, for a rotational tool speed of 5160rpm, axial friction force of 10kN and displacement of 8mm was reached at the top edge of the plug weld. This position of anticipated peak temperature value is due to the heat transferred during the FTSW process together with the accumulation of expelled material forming on the surface of the weld coupon. Statistical methods were applied to obtain knowledge of the trends and relationship between weld input parameters for various weld responses, including energy input, temperature, friction time, torque and displacement rate. Although it was shown that no single parameter solely controls the temperature gradients in the weld, the dominant influence of the rotational speed at the bottom of the weld and that of the displacement, at the top of the weld, were evident. The peak temperatures during the weld are of interest as these temperatures, together with the subsequent cooling rates, determine the Vickers hardness, of the material, through the weld. Spindle speed was found to have the dominant effect on temperature in the bottom half of the weld with displacement having a contributive effect closer to the top of the weld. Friction force dominate the effect on friction time, displacement rate and total energy input with friction force and spindle speed having an equal effect on torque. The multiple regression analysis resulted in valid models with varied, but acceptable accuracy with the equation for friction time resulting in an R predict value of 93.34%. These models provided a clear insight to the influence of weld input parameters on the weld responses and the model for friction time was used as an input parameter to the FTS welding simulation. The accurate prediction of the interface temperature is fundamental for process optimisation which will allow for producing consistent, reliable plug welds. A fully coupled transient two-dimensional axi-symmetrical analysis of heat flow during the FTSW process of AISI 4140 steel and subsequent Vickers hardness profiles through the HAZ, making use of numeric simulation applied in the commercially available FEA software, COMSOL Multiphysics®, is developed and reported on. Process optimisation hinges on a better understanding of the heat distribution during welding, making a major contribution to the resultant hardness. The thermal-plastic flow coupling of the model is such that temperature values are resolved together with that of the velocity field. The simulation utilises a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) two phase laminar flow and Heat Transfer physics, applied in an Eulerian mesh-based scheme. The viscosity of the fluid is based on a constitutive law of the flow stress using the Zener-Hollomon parameter with a flow model based on the Navier-Stokes’ equations to simulate the plastic deformation. Temperature dependant thermo-physical material properties and coefficient of friction are applied, and the application of viscous heating is controlled by a material state variable. The heat source model, required for material softening, is applied as two components, frictional and shear, with the heat source moving along the z-axis delivering sufficient energy to soften the metal, causing flow. The Navier-Stokes approach is applied with solid-state material transport during the weld based on laminar, viscous flow of a non-Newtonian fluid, dependant on temperature and strain rate. Numerically calculated values for temperature profiles and peak temperatures through to the weld as well as subsequent Vickers hardness profiles at points through the HAZ, obtained from the Finite Element model, were found to be in close agreement with values from trial welds. The largest variance was 19% for the peak temperature of weld E4W2, applying an axial friction force of 7.5kN, 6.5mm displacement and a tool rotational speed of 4080rpm – resulting in a friction time of 330 seconds. Predictions of hardness are found to be between 0% and 19% (mean 3%) of experimentally determined values with the biggest variance at the positions of peak temperatures due to the friction interfaces. Production of recombinant human CD21 and CD23 : towards a better understanding of their interaction

- Description: The prevalence of allergic diseases has dramatically increased over the last three decades. Presently, it is estimated that 20-30 per cent of the developed world suffers from allergic diseases. The majority of allergic diseases are rooted in the activities of IgE; an immunoglobulin which exerts its effector functions by interacting with a network of proteins. This network includes its low affinity receptor CD23. Cross linking of membrane IgE and CD21 by soluble CD23 results in an increase in IgE synthesis. This marks the interaction between CD23 and CD21 as an attractive therapeutic target. However, details regarding this interaction are inadequate for rational drug design. To obtain a deeper understanding of the CD23-CD21 interaction recombinant human CD21 (SCR1-2 and SCR5-8) and CD23 (16 kD and 25 kDa) were produced. The cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins comprised a significant portion of this study. Recombinant CD23 was expressed as inclusion bodies, refolded by rapid dilution and purified by size exclusion chromatography. Conversely, recombinant CD21 was expressed as soluble MBP-fusions and purified with an amylose affinity resin. The interaction between recombinant CD23 and CD21 was analysed by flow cytometry and ELISA experiments. Flow cytometry showed that 16 kDa and 25 kDa CD23 interacted with SCR5-8 to the same extent. Semi-quantitative ELISA experiments showed that both SCR1-2 and SCR5-8 were able to interact with 16 kDa and 25 kDa CD23. This suggests that the binding sites of SCR1-2 and SCR5-8 occur on 16 kDa CD23. Furthermore, since proteins were expressed in E. coli it suggests that the CD23-CD21 interaction does not require glycosylation. Furthermore, considering what is known about the SCR1-2-CD23 interaction from previous NMR studies; i.e. that the C-terminal tail (residues residues 289-298) of CD23 is responsible for binding SCR1-2, indicates that SCR5-8 binds somewhere within the lectin domain of CD23. This indicates that the CD23-CD21 interaction involves C-terminal tail-SCR1-2 and lectin domain-SCR5-8 interactions.

This marks the interaction between CD23 and CD21 as an attractive therapeutic target. However, details regarding this interaction are inadequate for rational drug design. To obtain a deeper understanding of the CD23-CD21 interaction recombinant human CD21 (SCR1-2 and SCR5-8) and CD23 (16 kD and 25 kDa) were produced. The cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins comprised a significant portion of this study. Recombinant CD23 was expressed as inclusion bodies, refolded by rapid dilution and purified by size exclusion chromatography. Conversely, recombinant CD21 was expressed as soluble MBP-fusions and purified with an amylose affinity resin. The interaction between recombinant CD23 and CD21 was analysed by flow cytometry and ELISA experiments. Flow cytometry showed that 16 kDa and 25 kDa CD23 interacted with SCR5-8 to the same extent. Semi-quantitative ELISA experiments showed that both SCR1-2 and SCR5-8 were able to interact with 16 kDa and 25 kDa CD23. This suggests that the binding sites of SCR1-2 and SCR5-8 occur on 16 kDa CD23. Furthermore, since proteins were expressed in E. coli it suggests that the CD23-CD21 interaction does not require glycosylation. Furthermore, considering what is known about the SCR1-2-CD23 interaction from previous NMR studies; i.e. that the C-terminal tail (residues residues 289-298) of CD23 is responsible for binding SCR1-2, indicates that SCR5-8 binds somewhere within the lectin domain of CD23. This indicates that the CD23-CD21 interaction involves C-terminal tail-SCR1-2 and lectin domain-SCR5-8 interactions.

The teaching of fractions is a challenging area at primary level and lays the foundation for understanding different topics in upper grades such as algebra, ratio and proportion, statistics and probability, to mention just a few. This study focused on an exploration of teaching fractions by five student teachers during their teaching practice.The main purpose was to gain an understanding of the experiences of the level 5-7 student teachers with regard to their practice of fraction teaching; their experience of the mathematics education course with respect to the teaching of fractions; and their prior experience related to fractions and fraction teaching at Grade 6 level. The findings from this research showed that student teachers viewed mathematics, specifically fractions, as just about doing calculations, doing drill and practice as in this way learners’ understanding of fractions is enhanced. The importance of using rules and procedures was emphasized as paving the way to mastering fractions. The data analysis also revealed that student teachers employed different teaching approaches when they considered learners’ prior knowledge. However, they misinterpreted the learner-centred approach in terms of group work and class discussion in their teaching of fractions. The data also revealed that some student teachers had an understanding of fractions as they managed to redirect their learners from applying some fraction misconceptions. The findings further showed that due to lack of understanding most of the participants experienced fear and anxiety in their fraction teaching; attempted an approach then reverted to old practices used in schools; taught fractions as symbolic representations where no meaning was involved; used incorrect terminologies such as ‘1 over 4’ or ‘1 out of 4’ instead of a ‘quarter’ or ‘one-fourth’. It is further revealed that the some student teachers viewed a fraction as a pair of two different whole numbers and can be broken apart. The findings of this study yielded one main implication for the teaching of mathematics: that the teacher training programs, specifically for mathematics teachers, must take into consideration the weaknesses and strengths of the student teachers shown in this study to properly train and prepare them to become effective mathematics teachers.

Findings indicate that the participants experience the following: (a) sexual development as a major influence on their sexual- and self-identity, (b) homosexual sexual orientation had a psychological impact on their lives, (c) they have a holistic understanding of who they are, and this understanding of themselves, has positively influenced their lives, (d) their homosexual sexual orientation has influenced the personal relationships in their lives in both positive and negative ways, (e) society has influenced their lives both positively and negatively because of their homosexual sexual orientation , (f) social networking can act as a risk to unintentional disclosure of homosexual sexual orientation and (g) they have experienced discrimination in various areas of their lives because of their homosexual sexual orientation. Some suggestions for future research included exploring lesbian stereotypes within the broader society, as well as inside the black lesbian community and examining the so-called differences between city and township lesbians with an emphasis on beliefs, attitudes, practices, subcultures and gender identity issues.

Some of this effect may result because biological control agents facilitate the transfer and ingress of deleterious microbes into plant tissues on which they feed. We evaluated this facilitation effect using water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and a weevil (Neochetina eichhorniae) and compared the reductions in photosynthetic rates between leaves subject to herbivory by adult weevils sterilized with 3.5% chlorine bleach, to those that were unsterilized. The results showed that weevils carried both fungi and bacteria, transferred these to leaves on which they fed, and that microbes and biomass removal contributed almost equally to the 37% decrease in photosynthetic productivity. Hence, maximising the effectiveness of using arthropods that damage leaf surfaces for biocontrol requires the presence of microorganisms that are deleterious to plants.

The data was analysed for emerging themes and sub-themes according to Tesch‟s eightstep data analysis process. This study highlights the characteristics, symptoms and causes of depression in adolescents and the effect it has on learners within our educational system. The results of the study indicate that the inclusion of depressed adolescents in the classroom can be problematic for teachers since they feel that they are not suitably trained to deal with these learners in a teaching and learning environment. The participating teachers indicated that they are not able to identify and support depressed adolescent learners in their classrooms effectively. The participating teachers feel that they require further training on how to refer these depressed adolescent learners and their parents for further intervention and support. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher constructed guiding principles in order to address the issues raised by the participating teachers. In the light of the guiding principles, recommendations were made towards teachers, parents, schools, health professionals, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and further research in order to accommodate depressed adolescent learners in South African schools effectively.

A sample of ten respondents was drawn from the project. The sampling method of this study was purposive sampling. Data was gathered through semi-structured questionnaires. Related literature focusing on income-generating projects for poverty alleviation was reviewed. Various recommendations have been made, based on the findings of the study. The findings of the study indicated the need for regular visits from Department officials to conduct monitoring and evaluation. Project members also need training in financial management as they cannot manage their finances. The research findings indicated clearly that strategies used by the Department were not effective enough to achieve the desired goals of an income-generating project.

Learner nurses experiences regarding clinical supervision at private hospitals in East London in the Eastern Cape

- Description: The purpose of this study was to explore and to describe experiences of learner nurses regarding clinical supervision at private hospitals in East London in the Eastern Cape. These were Life Healthcare hospitals. A qualitative, contextual approach was used and the exploratory, descriptive design was seen as most appropriate in this study. The subjects were the learner nurses in the Bridging Course Programme leading to registration as a General Nurse. The research questions were: How did you as a learner nurse, doing the Bridging Course, experience clinical supervision at Life Healthcare hospitals? A pilot study was conducted in a clinical setting involving respondents with similar characteristics to the study population. Fourteen participants were selected for this study by using a purposive, non-probability sampling method. Data were collected by means of individual interviews during which participants were able to describe their experiences during clinical supervision; data were collected until data saturation was reached.During data analysis, the researcher used the process of bracketing and remained neutral, setting aside previous knowledge and beliefs about the phenomenon under investigation. The researcher listened to the audiotapes used for data collection several times until she was completely satisfied with the interpretation of the verbatim data. Transcriptions were made within three days of the interview. The research was done in an ethically reflective manner and the researcher ensured the trustworthiness of the study at all times.
