Cultural clusters as a local economic development strategy in rural, small town areas: the Sarah Baartman District in the Eastern Cape of South Africa

- Description: It is increasingly recognized that the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) can play an important role in economic growth and development. Governments around the world, including South Africa, are implementing culture‐led economic growth and development strategies on national and regional scales. CCIs tend to cluster around large cities because of existing hard and soft infrastructure such as networking advantages and access to skilled labour, however, much less is known about the potential of the CCIs to drive rural development. This thesis thus investigates the potential of the CCIs to cluster in small towns and rural areas. Moreover, it examines the relationship between the CCIs and socio‐economic development. The CCIs have been touted as a catalyst for economic growth and development and so have often been used in urban regeneration schemes. The Sarah Baartman District (SBD) of South Africa’s Eastern Cape has identified culture as a potential new economic driver. Establishing a new development path is necessary as the former economic mainstay, agriculture, has declined in the region, creating poverty and unemployment problems. However, the SBD has only small towns which, according to the literature, are not suited to CCI clustering. Despite this, there is evidence of cultural clustering in some of the SBD’s small towns like Nieu Bethesda and Bathurst. This research therefore conducted an audit of the CCIs in the district and used geographic information systems (GIS) to map their locations by UNESCO Framework of Cultural Statistics (FCS) domains in order to determine the extent to which clustering has occurred in a small town setting. The audit identified 1 048 CCIs operating in the district and determined that clustering is possible within some small towns, depending on their demographic, economic, social, geographic and historic characteristics. For small towns where clusters exist or the potential for cluster formation is present, the domains in which the town holds a comparative advantage, based on domain proportions and location quotients, should be pursued for local economic development (LED). In this case, Visual Arts and Crafts and Cultural Heritage were prominent throughout the district while Design and Creative Services and Performance and Celebration had small regional concentrations. Theory suggests that the presence of CCIs is linked to higher levels of economic development as the creative class is more likely to be attracted to more highly developed areas, usually large cities. Furthermore, spillover effects from cultural activity promotes further development under the virtuous cycle. To investigate the relationship between CCI clusters and socio‐economic development, the locational data of municipal level CCI numbers is overlaid with a regional development indicator, a socio‐economic status index, which is based on census data and includes economic and social components. Results show that there is a general positive trend of CCIs locating in larger numbers (clustering) in areas with higher socio‐economic development performances.

Regarding soil erosion in South Africa, border lines between sensitive soil forms in the Duplex soil group and resistant soil forms in the Oxidic soil group need to be mapped to a high accuracy to prevent/manage erosion and major soil losses. In third world countries like South Africa, digital soil mapping (DSM) with the use of machine learning can provide the solutions to fill numerous gaps in these related fields. Local DSM research has been ongoing at the University of the Free State and related institutions for the past eleven years. It has also been used commercially and can therefore be regarded as fruitful. The National Resource Management unit of the Department of Environmental Affairs required a soil map regarding the susceptibility of the soil to erosion for catchment T35 D-E (87 000 hectares) in the Mzimvubu management area of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Through a DSM approach, machine learning was used to predict the occurrence of soil forms and soil families in accordance with the South African Soil Classification System. A total of 591 soil observations were made at specific points, pre-determined with the conditioned Latin Hypercube sampling (cLHS) method. These pre-determined points were classified into nineteen soil forms and forty eight soil families. The soils were then further divided into nine soil groups, based on their inherent sensitivity to erosion. Outlier observations were omitted from the dataset to create a reliable framework to predict the soil groups as influenced by the SCORPAN factors. These soil groups were mapped and evaluated with an accuracy of 68% and a Kappa statistic value of 0.42 that compare well with other soil maps, both locally and internationally. Mapping soil with an acceptable accuracy with such a high level of detail on catchment scale would be a tremendous advantage to soil scientists and environmental workforces in southern Africa. Future work should focus on DSM training, to broaden the base of DSM skills available in southern Africa. This will ensure that soil information would be included in addressing an increasing amount of real world problems at catchment scales.

Expectations and experiences of talent management across South Africa and the effect on retention

- Description: The “war on talent” is intensifying and effective talent management strategies are imperative for business success. This study explores the expectations and experiences of talent management strategies amongst employees across South Africa and their impact on retention. The literature review covers the constructs of talent management, working environment, rewards, leadership, race, age and gender as well as retention. A quantitative survey approach with comparative studies was adopted. A snowball convenience sampling method was used with links to an on-line questionnaire e-mailed to potential respondents. A total of 711 useable responses were received. Statistical analysis included factor analysis, Cronbach alpha reliability testing, mean factor scores, paired samplet-tests, Pearson’s correlations, T-tests and ANOVAs. The study found that leadership was the factor rated as most important followed by working environment and development. Respondents reported significant differences between expectations and employer ratings on all factors, with cash rewards being the greatest source of dissatisfaction. Experiences of work environment, leadership and development indicated stronger correlations to retention than cash rewards. Women, millennials and non-whites demonstrated the highest retention risks. A significant negative correlation was found between the respondents’ reported experience of leadership, work environment and development and the importance they attached to cash rewards. The study supports Hertzberg’s classification of cash rewards as a hygiene factor and Alderfer’s ERG theory’s concept of frustration-regression. This has significant implications for the focus of talent and retention strategies, and it is proposed that improving the quality of leadership, work environments and development opportunities will decrease the current over-reliance on monetary rewards as a retention tool.

Its introduction provided a platform to re-introduce career guidance to learners in schools with the aim of assisting them in making well-versed choices regarding their prospective careers and the subject selections pertaining to them (Department of Basic Education, 2011). Although no previous studies in the LO arena have focused on career discourses, previous literature on career discourses, in general, suggests that the models and theories still employed today have been heavily influenced by Western individualistic values. This has been found to create a disconnect between the South African subjects and the context they exist in, rendering these discourses unable to provide substantive assistance in the career decision making process. This study seeks to determine whether the career discourses located in the selected texts speak to the subjectivity and agency of the learner to make informed decisions. The current study examined the career discourses present in the LO textbooks utilised in Eastern Cape schools. The study sampled LO textbooks from Grades 10-12, as this group of learners are preparing to make critical further studying and career decisions and require guidance in their decision making process. A social constructionist lens was applied to the study by means of a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis, making use of Willig’s (2013) six step process as a reference. Dominant discourses of the objective self, neoliberal self and the transitioning adolescent were uncovered in the texts, which suggests that, rather than challenge the dominant discourses that have prevailed in career theory and practice, the LO careers curriculum further reinforces them.

Qualitative research methods are used in two phases. In phase one, a literature review is conducted to create a framework of strategic aspects to consider when making capital structure decisions. In phase two the framework is evaluated by conducting in-depth interviews. The purpose of phase two is to identify the strategic aspects that are considered in the South African business context. The literature overview identified twelve strategic aspects for consideration when making capital structure decisions, namely business risk, control, flexibility, growth rate, long-run viability, management constraints, management conservatism, market conditions, rating agencies, size, taxation and transactional cost. The framework of twelve strategic aspects to be considered when making capital structure decisions was empirically evaluated by means of interviews. The interview responses regarding the initial twelve strategic aspects were coded and three themes emerged, namely critical strategic decision-making factors (business risk, financial flexibility, tax advantage, and volatility of earnings cash flows); factors relating specifically to markets in South Africa (growth rate, long-term viability, market conditions, credit rating, and transaction costs) and autonomy of the decision-making process (control, management constraints, managerial conservatism, and size). During the interview process, it was indicated that the autonomy of the decision-making process theme (control structure, management constraints, managerial conservatism and business size) do not form part of the strategic capital structure decision-making process in their companies and should be omitted. The interviewees highlighted four additional themes that may affect their capital structure decisions, namely government interference in the market and in the local business; Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) rating; political stability, and state capture. The study suggests a proposed framework consisting of six themes that can be used to guide capital structure decisions in South Africa businesses.

Previous research has shown that cybercriminals use different methods, including the DNS protocol, to distribute malicious content, remain hidden and avoid detection from various technologies that are put in place to detect anomalies. This allows botnets and certain malware families to establish covert communication channels that can be used to send or receive data and also distribute malicious payloads using the DNS queries and responses. Cybercriminals use the DNS to breach highly protected networks, distribute malicious content, and exfiltrate sensitive information without being detected by security controls put in place by embedding certain strings in DNS packets. This research undertaking broadens this research field and fills in the existing research gap by extending the analysis of DNS being used as a payload distribution channel to detection of domains that are used to distribute different malicious payloads. This research undertaking analysed the use of the DNS in detecting domains and channels that are used for distributing malicious payloads. Passive DNS data which replicate DNS queries on name servers to detect anomalies in DNS queries was evaluated and analysed in order to detect malicious payloads. The research characterises the malicious payload distribution channels by analysing passive DNS traffic and modelling the DNS query and response patterns. The research found that it is possible to detect malicious payload distribution channels through the analysis of DNS TXT resource records.

The evolution and future of total rewards as a remuneration strategy

- Description: A total rewards framework plays a pivotal role in the attraction, engagement and retention of employees. The study firstly traces the history of reward and the factors that have led to the notion of a total rewards model. The study then sought to discover whether the current approach was optimal and therefore a desired strategy for the workplace of the future. Through the literary review, coupled with qualitative research with participants from well-known sizeable organisations, the research indicates that, whilst a competitive salary and benefits package is an essential factor in the employee cycle, and that pay does play a big role in the attraction of employees; once employed it is the non-financial factors that are paramount to the engagement and retention of employees. Insofar as employees believe their package is competitive and/or reflective of their contribution, they have the potential to be engaged. For that potential to be realised, it is the little things that matter to the employees that then come into force. Workplace culture, flexibility, career development, transparency, an alignment between the employee, the brand and the values of the organisation, are all vital in the engagement and retention of employees. In order for these factors to remain valued by employees, communication is essential. Manager interaction remains at the forefront of the employees’ experience at work. A positive interaction whereby coaching, development and the achievement of the little things that really matter, allow for a more productive and engaged employee, which ultimately improves the profitability and/or success of the business.

- Description: A total rewards framework plays a pivotal role in the attraction, engagement and retention of employees. The study firstly traces the history of reward and the factors that have led to the notion of a total rewards model. The study then sought to discover whether the current approach was optimal and therefore a desired strategy for the workplace of the future. Through the literary review, coupled with qualitative research with participants from well-known sizeable organisations, the research indicates that, whilst a competitive salary and benefits package is an essential factor in the employee cycle, and that pay does play a big role in the attraction of employees; once employed it is the non-financial factors that are paramount to the engagement and retention of employees. Insofar as employees believe their package is competitive and/or reflective of their contribution, they have the potential to be engaged. For that potential to be realised, it is the little things that matter to the employees that then come into force. Workplace culture, flexibility, career development, transparency, an alignment between the employee, the brand and the values of the organisation, are all vital in the engagement and retention of employees. In order for these factors to remain valued by employees, communication is essential. Manager interaction remains at the forefront of the employees’ experience at work. A positive interaction whereby coaching, development and the achievement of the little things that really matter, allow for a more productive and engaged employee, which ultimately improves the profitability and/or success of the business.

Eight semi-structured interviews (SSIs) and seven focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with support staff, peer educators and key stakeholders to establish the need for a comprehensive workplace health promotion initiative, and to identify the facilitating and constraining factors to conducting such an initiative on tobacco use at the University. Three health information leaflets (HILs) were developed collaboratively with the Peer Educators following a series of scientific, end-user testing approaches. The HILs were tested for readability, comprehension, actionability and suitability. A four-day health promotion training programme was conducted to improve user friendliness, memory retention and recall of the HILs by the peer educators and to improve tobacco related health literacy aspects. The participants’ memory recall was evaluated using a pre- and post-, and post-post-intervention questionnaire to evaluate knowledge transfer. The study participants were also equipped with the completed HILs to distribute to their peers and to use as reference sources of information when needed in future. Results: The peer educators and institutional management supported the need for a tobacco workplace health promotion intervention. The intervention and evaluation phase of this study proved that health information material developed was readable, actionable, suitable, userfriendly, culturally sensitive and contextually appropriate. The workshops resulted in a significant increase in the participants’ tobacco related health knowledge. Through the adoption of a collaborative approach to the research, the participants felt empowered and ready to be agents of change amongst their peers in the workplace. Recommendations: The collective use of external expert reviewers, end-user testing techniques and validated computer programmes are recommended to improve the validity of health promotion research outcomes. A longitudinal study that focus on behaviour change, specifically, with health evaluation and monitoring aspects could be conducted as the next step to this study.

- Description: Pelagic larval stages of most marine benthic species are important in maintaining coastal populations of adults. Several physio-chemical factors such as currents, winds, larval behaviour and time have an influence on the dispersal and transport of larvae to the adult habitat but their role is however still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the alongshore and cross-shore transport and temporal delivery of invertebrate larvae at four sites (Kenton on Sea, Cannon Rocks, Schoenmakerskop and Cape St Francis) along the south east coast of Eastern Cape, South Africa. Larval distribution of several taxa was determined during two sampling periods, by collecting water samples at nearshore line transects (3 distances: 900m, 1500m and 2400m – perpendicular to the shore) and at three depths (surface, thermocline/middle, bottom), which ranged from 15m (inshore) to 50m (offshore). Physical properties (current speed and direction, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity, temperature, salinity, pH, pressure, density and conductivity) were measured and coupled in order to further understand larval distribution. The larvae were analysed as both total abundance and separately as the abundances of a variety of taxa which were: Perna perna, Mytilus galloprovincialis, oysters, early and late nauplii and cyprids. Larval settlement and recruitment on the rocky shores were measured by monthly deployment and collection of 20 (10 each for barnacles and mussels) artificial collectors at each site, which were preserved in ethanol or frozen for further processing. Multiple Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA) analyses were used to test the effects of site, depth and distance from the shore for the nearshore larvae (taxa analysed separately). In addition, a distance based linear model (distLM) was performed to analyse the relationship between the total larval abundance and the above mentioned physical variables. Multiple two-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed to test the effects of months and sites on the settlement and recruitment of the larvae (P. perna, M. galloprovincialis, other bivalves, cyprids and juvenile barnacles) arriving on the shore. For the nearshore larval distribution, results from the PERMANOVAs revealed that most taxa showed a significant site and depth interactions with the exception of ‘early nauplii’ taxon. Also nearly all taxa were found within the thermocline, besides ‘oyster’ and ‘cyprids’ which were located at thermocline or bottom. Larvae were also located at variable distances from the shore, with most occurring at the offshore stations. Furthermore, there was a geographical separation of larval abundance according to sites, with most larvae located at Cannon Rocks and Kenton on Sea and least at Schoenmakerskop and Cape St Francis. For the settlement and recruitment, most taxa showed a seasonal trend, with the highest abundance of settlers and recruits expectedly appearing during the summer months of the sampling period. Additionally there was a site effect for most taxa (P. perna, M. galloprovincialis, other bivalves and juvenile barnacles), where settlers and recruits were mostly found at Cannon Rocks. Significant differences in abundance of settlers and recruits amongst the four sites indicate spatial and temporal variability for the targeted 180km stretch of coast. Overall for this study, taxon and ontogenetic stage of larvae were important in the distribution and abundance of larvae. Throughout the time frame of nearshore and intertidal sampling, Cannon Rocks consistently resulted as a ‘hot spot’ for larval abundance, settlement and recruitment, while a broad west to east separation was also observed. These results hence highlight that within this stretch of c.180km coast, time, taxon, ontogeny and post-settlement factors influence early dynamics of benthic populations.

- Description: South Africa is a country known for rich biodiversity and ecosystems across the land and seascape. South Africa is one of the global hotspots for cycad diversity. Cycads are known to be the world’s most threatened plant species; declining in South Africa at a rapid pace, with threat of extinction in the wild. The main factor being harvesting from the wild for private collections. Rare cycad species’ are especially sought after by collectors. Economic theory assumes that the exploitation of a species is unlikely to result in extinction due to the increasing costs of finding the last few individuals of a species. However, the theory of the Anthropogenic Allee Effect (AAE) suggests that if consumers place a disproportionate value on a rare species’, a cycle may result whereby increased exploitation decreases population size, increasing the value of the species and, consequently, leading to its extinction in the wild. This hypothesis was tested for 37 Encephalartos species using data collected on wild populations, auction prices and the IUCN Red List status for the year 2010. It was hypothesised that an AAE was present within Encephalartos species, as three species have already gone extinct in the wild. The price per centimetre was positively correlated to the rarity of the species and the price per centimetre was negatively correlated to the wild population size. The results suggest a trend of an AAE for the year 2010. Adequate conservation policies are needed to reduce the effects of demand on illegal harvesting and prevent extinction in the wild. The effect of rarity needs to be taken into account to ensure successfulness of such policies. The most recent conservation policy implemented to protect cycads in South Africa is the Strategy and Action for the Management of Cycads in South Africa, which was introduced in 2016. The successfulness of this policy cannot, however, be analysed due to a lack of census data following its implementation.

However, the associated carbon emissions, environmental impact, the depletion of fossil fuels and price and cost volatility are factors influencing the growing popularity of research into renewable energy. Solar power is acknowledged as the fastest-growing renewable energy, but the uncertainty surrounding the long-term projections of solar irradiance available for energy conversion is a hindrance when discussing the financial risk with potential investors. This study investigates the quality of freely available solar resource data in South Africa as well as proposes techniques for potential solar farm site comparisons. Tolerance intervals derived within a Bayesian framework provide information on the future available solar resource across multiple sites. These techniques capture the inherent variability in the available solar resource which equips investors with statistical methods that lead to the better understanding of the solar resource and thus aids in better decision-making.

- Description: With the world’s growing population and limited natural resources, there is a need to produce more food using less inputs. A major limiting factor to meeting the agricultural production needs of the growing population is fresh water. Water is a critical resource in agriculture and may be more of a limiting factor than other crop growth requirements in some areas. Furthermore, water availability is being impacted by climate change and competition from other industries. Methods of improving crop water use efficiency through conservation of water and the enhancement of crop growth need to be employed to meet the growing demand sustainably. The purpose of the research was to assess the differences in soil water status between organically farmed crops with a grass mulch and conventionally farmed crops without mulch, with a view to making more efficient use of the water resource. This research was conducted at the Mandela long term organic farming systems research trial site at Nelson Mandela University, George campus in the southern Cape, South Africa. It is part of a larger research project (the Mandela Trials) in which various researchers have been involved in different aspects of this trial including agronomy, microbiology and pest and disease control. This research took place over two seasons, namely, 2016-2017 season and 2017-2018 season. The soil water content (SWC) of organic and conventional plots were measured using fixed capacitance probes that recorded continuous data, every half hour, at depths of 10, 30 and 50 cm. A handheld theta probe was also used to measure the SWC in the top 6 cm of the soil at 7 to14 day intervals. The organic treatment had a significantly higher SWC than the conventional treatment over the two seasons in which this research was conducted. In addition, soil carbon was significantly higher in the organic treatment, than the conventional. Organic farming methods preserve and promote an increase in soil organic matter, thus improving the soil structure and increasing the soil’s water holding capacity. From this research, it is concluded that organic farming practices can be used to help conserve SWC, keeping it available to crops for longer and helping farmers make more efficient use of this scarce resource. This is especially relevant for low rainfall areas which are affected by water shortages. The improved SWC availability should be coupled with good agronomic practices to increase productive water losses and the conversion of water to yields, thus increasing water use efficiency. In addition, adding organic matter to the soil will improve resilience of the soil and help sequester carbon and thus help in mitigating climate change.

- Description: With the world’s growing population and limited natural resources, there is a need to produce more food using less inputs. A major limiting factor to meeting the agricultural production needs of the growing population is fresh water. Water is a critical resource in agriculture and may be more of a limiting factor than other crop growth requirements in some areas. Furthermore, water availability is being impacted by climate change and competition from other industries. Methods of improving crop water use efficiency through conservation of water and the enhancement of crop growth need to be employed to meet the growing demand sustainably. The purpose of the research was to assess the differences in soil water status between organically farmed crops with a grass mulch and conventionally farmed crops without mulch, with a view to making more efficient use of the water resource. This research was conducted at the Mandela long term organic farming systems research trial site at Nelson Mandela University, George campus in the southern Cape, South Africa. It is part of a larger research project (the Mandela Trials) in which various researchers have been involved in different aspects of this trial including agronomy, microbiology and pest and disease control. This research took place over two seasons, namely, 2016-2017 season and 2017-2018 season. The soil water content (SWC) of organic and conventional plots were measured using fixed capacitance probes that recorded continuous data, every half hour, at depths of 10, 30 and 50 cm. A handheld theta probe was also used to measure the SWC in the top 6 cm of the soil at 7 to14 day intervals. The organic treatment had a significantly higher SWC than the conventional treatment over the two seasons in which this research was conducted. In addition, soil carbon was significantly higher in the organic treatment, than the conventional. Organic farming methods preserve and promote an increase in soil organic matter, thus improving the soil structure and increasing the soil’s water holding capacity. From this research, it is concluded that organic farming practices can be used to help conserve SWC, keeping it available to crops for longer and helping farmers make more efficient use of this scarce resource. This is especially relevant for low rainfall areas which are affected by water shortages. The improved SWC availability should be coupled with good agronomic practices to increase productive water losses and the conversion of water to yields, thus increasing water use efficiency. In addition, adding organic matter to the soil will improve resilience of the soil and help sequester carbon and thus help in mitigating climate change.

XRF and LA-ICP-MS were used to analyse the bulk rock chemistry while SEM/EDS was used to scrutinize specific areas within the tufa. Increasing trends toward more marine tufa for many elements are also shown here and can be explained by the interaction with increased amounts of sedimentary products and/or interactions with more saline water that contains a higher TDS (Total Dissolved Salts). This is also the first study to report needle-fibre calcite formation in stromatolites and the first to geochemically analyse modern peritidal microbialites.

- Description: To ascertain household exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) and its associations with respiratory diseases in Port Elizabeth, a cross-sectional study was undertaken in Walmer Township and Wells Estate in Port Elizabeth. Ambient and indoor CO levels were measured in each township and compared with national and international air quality guideline. ChromAir® diffusion carbon monoxide badges were used for carbon monoxide measurement. Badges are relatively inexpensive and easy to use and results can be obtained after a 48-hour passive exposure. Exposure to CO was determined by measuring levels in the ambient environment and living rooms of study dwellings. The prevalence of respiratory diseases and symptoms were assessed using the iBhayi study questionnaire. The mean of ambient and indoor CO levels for the total sample was 8.02 (SD 2.43) and 0.68 (SD 1.23) ppm respectively. In this study, 40% of ambient CO measurements exceeded the World Health Organisation (WHO) 8-hour guideline of 8.7 ppm. The Student’s t-test showed that ambient (p = 0.59) and indoor (p = 0.16) CO levels in Walmer Township and Wells Estate were similar. This shows that CO exposure in both townships do not vary significantly. Fever and chills (32%), headache (19%) and runny/blocked nose (19%) were the most prevalent acute respiratory symptoms. The predominant respiratory diseases/conditions were tuberculosis (8.5%) and asthma (5.7%). CO at levels below the WHO 8-hour guidelines was significantly associated with the prevalence of acute respiratory symptoms (AOR = 2.286; 95% CI: 1.220 - 4.283). Ageing emerged as an independent risk factor for high tuberculosis prevalence in the study sites (AOR = 5.837; 95% CI: 1.654 – 20. 596). The study indicated low levels of carbon monoxide exposure in the study areas. From the findings, CO may be associated with an increase in respiratory symptoms in the study population. Increasing community awareness on sources and adverse health effects of CO exposure with improved service delivery will be helpful in reducing the burden of respiratory outcomes in the study sites.

People suffering from impairments are often disabled by society because of their handicap. More than three percent (3%) of young people in South Africa aged between 10 – 19 years are disabled. This study investigates the status of inclusion of outdoor environmental education programmes for disabled young people; what is offered and what practices are working in the industry in South Africa. It also investigates barriers to inclusion. Though many disabilities have been identified, visual impairment is the focus of the study. This study also looks at what more can be done from an Ecological Systems Theory of Human Development point of view and investigates what underlying mechanisms influence the inclusion of visually impaired individuals in outdoor environmental education programmes in South Africa. What is done and what is not done to promote inclusion for visually impaired learners in these programmes is also investigated. This study aims to answer the question; What is the current status quo concerning the inclusion of visually impaired learners in outdoor environmental learning programmes in environmental education centres and campsites in South Africa? An initial focus group conducted informally prior to the study, helped me to understand the context. In this study, key-interviews and questionnaires were used as research tools. I also ran a photo narrative project throughout the research project which was used as a participatory activity and provided further insight into practices. Inductive, abductive and retroductive analysis approaches were used to identify emerging themes, and I applied method triangulation using all research tools in order to address the research questions. Some of the most important findings are that: • There are many barriers, some intrinsic others extrinsic, that hinder inclusion of visually impaired individuals in outdoor environmental education programmes in South Africa. • Although there are many things done in the industry to promote inclusion, there is much more that could be done. • The visually impaired individual him/herself influences inclusivity in outdoor environmental education programmes. • Interactions and influences in the mesosystem (between different microsystems and ecosystems) have an impact on the inclusivity of visually impaired individuals in outdoor environmental education programmes. • Dispositions of people have an impact on the inclusion of visually impaired individuals in outdoor environmental education programmes. • The diversity of generative mechanisms (drivers to events), that interact at the level of the real, influence the inclusion of visually impaired individuals in outdoor environmental education programmes. Disability/impairment is a much-neglected area of environmental education research in South Africa. This study has contributed scholarship to this area and has also identified possible further areas of study in creating awareness, creating an opportunity to reflect on practices, and finding possible solutions to the barriers of exclusion.

The origin of bedrock depression wetlands in the southern Cape of South Africa: a changing perspective

- Description: The predominant theory of the origin of depression wetlands in southern Africa was developed by Goudie and Thomas (1985) and focuses primarily on mechanisms relating to deflation and erosion as the main drivers of wetland formation. This theory is based on wind driven deflation of animal watering areas where heavy grazing and trampling of vegetation promotes removal of sediment over short periods of time by wind, to create local depressions and impoundment of water. However, this theory applies in arid and semi-arid areas where grazing can reduce vegetation sufficiently to lead to deflation but does not fully explain the origins of depression wetlands that have formed in moist climates or on ancient erosion surfaces such as the African Erosion Surface (AES). This study investigates the origin of a depression wetland that has formed on sandstone bedrock through weathering and dissolution on the AES in South Africa. Wetlands like this act as groundwater recharge zones such that water flows away from the centre of the depression, taking with it any dissolved solutes derived from weathering of the bed of the depression. Fluctuations between wet and dry periods create both highly reducing conditions (during wet phases) and highly oxidising conditions (during dry phases) beneath the margins of these depression wetlands. Some of the main constituents of the sandstone in this wetland are iron(III) oxides, which are highly sensitive to redox conditions and have therefore been transported to and trapped in the margins of the depression. The redistribution of iron(III) oxides from the centre towards the margins of the depression has caused a net volume loss in the centre of the depression, causing sagging, and a net volume gain at the margins of the depression associated with swelling. This process occurs over periods upwards of a million years and explains the presence of depression wetlands in moist climates.

Carbon and nutrient storage of the Swartkops Estuary salt marsh and seagrass habitats

- Description: Coastal wetlands play an important role in filtering nutrient contaminants from water bodies and are also effective carbon sinks. These systems are known as blue carbon ecosystems. Blue carbon is defined as the carbon stored and sequestered by coastal vegetated habitats such as seagrasses, salt marsh and mangroves. These habitats are being lost on a global scale due to climate change and other anthropogenic pressures. Quantifying ecosystem services provided by these habitats may lead to better conservation and restoration strategies. Research on this topic has escalated over the past decade but there are no published studies in South Africa. The aim of this study was to quantify the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks in the above and below ground tissues of Zostera capensis, Spartina maritima, and Salicornia tegetaria — a seagrass, salt marsh grass, and salt marsh succulent. This was done in both summer and winter to understand the variability of carbon and nutrient storage. The organic carbon stock of the sediment beneath these three species was also quantified. Results showed that S. maritima, S. tegetaria, and Z. capensis stored 16 ± 2.9 Mg C. ha-1, 4.3 ± 0.7 Mg C. ha-1, and 2.1 ± 0.5 Mg C. ha-1 in their respective biomass, and 247 ± 48 Mg C. ha-1, 212 ± 44 Mg C. ha-1, and 224 ± 38 Mg C. ha-1 respectively in the sediment beneath these habitats. This was determined by elemental analysis and the loss on ignition method (LOI). The sediment made up the dominant carbon pool in the estuary and there was very little seasonal variation, however spatial variation was evident. The sediment carbon stocks were similar to the global mean for salt marsh (255 Mg C. ha-1) and greater than the global mean for seagrass (108 Mg C. ha-1). The Swartkops Estuary stored a total (biomass and sediment carbon combined) of 14 094 Mg C in the Z. capensis area of 62 ha, 25 286 Mg C in the S. maritima area of 96 ha, and 5 916 Mg C in the S. tegetaria, covering an area of 27 ha. This is significantly less than what has been found globally in estuaries, but this is largely due to the smaller area cover of these macrophytes. The amount of carbon stored per hectare is much larger in this South African system than in many international studies — possibly due to the high levels of pollution coming into the system. Nitrogen and phosphorus stocks in the plants fluctuated seasonally in relation to the nutrient input to the estuary, with the greatest stocks found in winter in Z. capensis, S. maritima, and S. tegetaria (0.42 ± 0.03 Mg N. ha-1, 1.6 ± 0.13 Mg N. ha-1, and 0.37 ± 0.02 Mg N. ha-1, respectively; and 0.4 ± 0.03 Mg P. ha-1, 1.2 ± 0.10 Mg P. ha-1 in Z. capensis and S. maritima respectively) because nutrient inputs to the system were highest in winter, however the P stocks in S. tegetaria were greatest in summer (0.35 ± 0.04 Mg P. ha-1). The reason for this difference is because of their ability to store phosphorus better than nitrogen and for longer periods of time due to luxury uptake. Salicornia tegetaria N and P stocks were also lower than the other two species, possibly due to its placement along the intertidal gradient, as it is not tidally inundated for as long as the other two species. The Z. capensis and S. maritima at Site 1 showed extremely high amounts of nitrogen in their tissues (105.3 ± 1.6 g kg-1 and 74.91 ± 4.1 g kg-1 respectively). This is due to the area being a depositional site as it was an old oyster farm and experiences little tidal flushing from the sea despite its proximity to the mouth. Nutrient ratios and N: biomass were determined as an indication of nutrient pollution. The N: biomass was low in both seasons in Z. capensis, S. maritima, and S. tegetaria (0.08, 0.02, 0.04 respectively) indicating consistant eutrophic conditions in the estuary. Plant biomass was a better indicator of nutrient pollution than epiphytes which were very low in the Swartkops Estuary and did not prove as a useful indicator of nutrient enrichment. These results can inform local management plans of the ecosystem service potential of these species and how they should be protected for future and current sustainable use as filters for nutrient pollution to keep the water quality in a better state. It also outlines the current state of blue carbon and nutrient stocks in an urban South African estuary.

- Description: Coastal wetlands play an important role in filtering nutrient contaminants from water bodies and are also effective carbon sinks. These systems are known as blue carbon ecosystems. Blue carbon is defined as the carbon stored and sequestered by coastal vegetated habitats such as seagrasses, salt marsh and mangroves. These habitats are being lost on a global scale due to climate change and other anthropogenic pressures. Quantifying ecosystem services provided by these habitats may lead to better conservation and restoration strategies. Research on this topic has escalated over the past decade but there are no published studies in South Africa. The aim of this study was to quantify the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks in the above and below ground tissues of Zostera capensis, Spartina maritima, and Salicornia tegetaria — a seagrass, salt marsh grass, and salt marsh succulent. This was done in both summer and winter to understand the variability of carbon and nutrient storage. The organic carbon stock of the sediment beneath these three species was also quantified. Results showed that S. maritima, S. tegetaria, and Z. capensis stored 16 ± 2.9 Mg C. ha-1, 4.3 ± 0.7 Mg C. ha-1, and 2.1 ± 0.5 Mg C. ha-1 in their respective biomass, and 247 ± 48 Mg C. ha-1, 212 ± 44 Mg C. ha-1, and 224 ± 38 Mg C. ha-1 respectively in the sediment beneath these habitats. This was determined by elemental analysis and the loss on ignition method (LOI). The sediment made up the dominant carbon pool in the estuary and there was very little seasonal variation, however spatial variation was evident. The sediment carbon stocks were similar to the global mean for salt marsh (255 Mg C. ha-1) and greater than the global mean for seagrass (108 Mg C. ha-1). The Swartkops Estuary stored a total (biomass and sediment carbon combined) of 14 094 Mg C in the Z. capensis area of 62 ha, 25 286 Mg C in the S. maritima area of 96 ha, and 5 916 Mg C in the S. tegetaria, covering an area of 27 ha. This is significantly less than what has been found globally in estuaries, but this is largely due to the smaller area cover of these macrophytes. The amount of carbon stored per hectare is much larger in this South African system than in many international studies — possibly due to the high levels of pollution coming into the system. Nitrogen and phosphorus stocks in the plants fluctuated seasonally in relation to the nutrient input to the estuary, with the greatest stocks found in winter in Z. capensis, S. maritima, and S. tegetaria (0.42 ± 0.03 Mg N. ha-1, 1.6 ± 0.13 Mg N. ha-1, and 0.37 ± 0.02 Mg N. ha-1, respectively; and 0.4 ± 0.03 Mg P. ha-1, 1.2 ± 0.10 Mg P. ha-1 in Z. capensis and S. maritima respectively) because nutrient inputs to the system were highest in winter, however the P stocks in S. tegetaria were greatest in summer (0.35 ± 0.04 Mg P. ha-1). The reason for this difference is because of their ability to store phosphorus better than nitrogen and for longer periods of time due to luxury uptake. Salicornia tegetaria N and P stocks were also lower than the other two species, possibly due to its placement along the intertidal gradient, as it is not tidally inundated for as long as the other two species. Therefore, to acquire and maintain a sustainable competitive advantage, the ability to effectively retain knowledge employees has become high-priority. The job embeddedness model presents an alternative approach to the traditional constructs of job satisfaction, organisational commitment and job involvement, for understanding the retention concept. The aim of the research was to determine the interaction effect of job embeddedness on retention, which could be used to intensify the attachment of academic staff in a higher education institution and to dissuade turnover cognitions. An empirical study consisting of a web-based questionnaire was conducted amongst 100 academic staff members across all campuses of Nelson Mandela University. The purpose of the survey was to measure job embeddedness, retention, and the relationship between job embeddedness and retention. The results indicated that organisational embeddedness, rather than community embeddedness, influenced the intention to leave. Employees that had a positive experience with the organisation in terms of fit, links and sacrifice, were less likely to leave the organisation. It is recommended that job embeddedness should form the basis for the development of an effective integrated human resource management retention strategy to attract, retain, motivate and develop employees, to improve organisational performance and achieve organisational goals and objectives. The implication is that recruitment and selection should be done carefully to create a fit between the employee and the organisation. Talent should be fully used in an environment that fosters autonomy and teamwork should be crafted and encouraged.

This is largely due to government bureaucracy, problems within the aid administration process and its influence on developmental issues. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were created for countries to address human developmental issues within different countries around the world. The countries had to meet MDGs by 2015. Nigeria was not able to meet many of the set targets and had made only few improvements within the health department. This is largely due to government bureaucracy and the slow pace that is maintained during the formulation and implementation of governmental policies and programs. This study seeks to explore various issues that are identified in the attainment of MDGs 4 and 5: MDGs 4 with target 5 - 2/3 reductions in under than five mortality rates and MDG 5 with target 6 - ¾ reductions in the maternal mortality rate. This study will assess the efforts made by local and international organizations during the implementation of MDGs 4 and 5. This study will identify the impact of foreign aid on the health sector, with an intervention on the maternal and child mortality ratio, key international donors in the maternal and child sector. Document analysis is been adopted as the methodological approach for this research. These analysis focuses on documents such as publications, reports, policy papers and academic literature. One of the key findings in this study is that - lack of good policies of health services is a major barrier to the improvement in maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.

- Description: The key critical role played by Central Banks’ monetary policy and government macroeconomic policy relies on precise and timely forecasts on economic growth along the business cycle periods. In the past, many emerging countries have been facing problems of high escalating inflationary prices. This dissertation is set out to examine the influence of inflation on output growth and unemployment considering the global financial crisis in BRICS countries using annual data collected over the period 1980 to 2016. The study is divided into two sections; namely macroeconomic policy and monetary policy principles. The empirical analyses are computed through using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach proposed by Pesaran et al. (2001). The macroeconomic policy findings show that there is a negative long run relationship between inflation and economic growth in Russia and South Africa. The study’s ARDL bounds test for cointegration results also indicated that there is statistically significant long run comovement between inflation and economic growth in all BRICS countries. The study results also provided that there is an existence of a negative short run relationship between inflation and economic growth in South Africa. The Phillips curve results indicated that a positive long run trade-off between inflation and unemployment is found and no short run relationship discovered. It is also revealed that the long run co-movement between inflation and unemployment only exists in Russia and South Africa. The study is significant because it contributes to the empirical determinants of long term prosperity of the BRICS partners.
