Stakeholder relationship management of a Chinese Mining Organisation in Zimbabwe

The problems ranging from disgruntled communities and allegations of labour violations. Taking into account the impact that China’s FDI has had on the ailing Zimbabwean economy research into the management of stakeholder relationships becomes imperative to understand how Chinese mining organisations build and manage stakeholder relationships. A review of stakeholder theory has revealed that there is not much emphasis by researchers on how organisations manage their stakeholder relationships, but rather on the identification and analysis of stakeholders. Research that has focused on stakeholder relationships has focused on different elements found in stakeholder relationship management and not necessarily on how stakeholder relationships should be managed. On the other hand, stakeholder theory does not seem to include social licence to operate which is important in stakeholder relationship management within the mining context. The purpose of this study is to develop a multidimensional stakeholder relationship management process for the Chinese mining organisation in Zimbabwe, showing dynamic interactions between multiple stakeholder networks with complementary, competitive and/or cooperative interests, while taking into account the possibility that interests may vary according to the underlying context. Thirteen semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with three stakeholder groups of a Chinese mining organisation as identified from the literature, namely employees, government and the community. The critical incident technique (CIT) was adopted in developing the interview questions and facilitated the data collection process. Participants described 36 critical incidents. According to multiple stakeholders, the findings suggest that, the Chinese managers built the relationship with multiple stakeholders through friendship, negotiation, pretend not to understand, referral, singing a contract, started with problems, they just arrived and through the government. With the same relationship being managed by the Chinese managers by being hard, rough and ruthless, authoritative, Chinese way of doing things, used avoidance, lack of competency, through a third party and resolving conflict when managing stakeholder relationships. Showing that the building and managing of stakeholder relationships is socially constructed and experienced differently by stakeholders. The positive and negative relationship characteristics influenced how stakeholder relationships are managed by the selected Chinese mining organisation. In the presence of positive relationship characteristics which included, friendship,there was flexibility, power dynamics, accountability depends on situations, commitment a show of investment, do cooperate to a certain extent, trust began with an open mind, shared values: hardwork and profit, shared values: culture was associated with the Chinese managing the relationship through being kind, supportive, motivating and understanding; complaint; through a third party; controlling; Chinese way of doing things; and performance and reward management of stakeholder relationships. Whilst negative relationship characteristics which included fear, their hearts were hardened, Chinese had power, intimidaton, not accountable, lack of commitment, communication understanding, connotations and intretations, communication done through a third party; no cooperation want to cut coners; trust are they conveying what is being said; deception and misrepresentation; trust depends on experience; being told lies and not transparent were associated with negative (being authoritative; hard, rough and ruthless; avoidance; blame shifting and pushy) stakeholder relationship management by the Chinese managers. Hence, a proposition that negative or positive relationship characteristics result in negative or positive stakeholder relationship management by the Chinese managers was propossed. The following challenges were experienced in the management of stakeholder relationships namely, communication, corruption, cheating, political environment, working conditions and broken promises. The dynamic multidimensional stakeholder relationship management process was subsequently revised to accommodate the new relationship characteristics and their positive and negative influence on how stakeholder relationships are managed. The main contribution of this study is the dynamic multidimensional stakeholder relationship management process which was developed within the context of a Chinese mining organisation in Africa. It is recommended that practitioners utilise the dynamic multidimensional stakeholder relationship management process to assist them in understanding and conducting research on stakeholder relationships. Further research is suggested on developing the research proposition made in the study and to empirically test the dynamic multidimension stakeholder relationship management process in other industries that posses different or similar contexts as this study.

Peak isokinetic torque was measured before and after each condition and sprint times were recorded. Eccentric and concentric peak torque decreased significantly (p , 0.05) at 1.05 rad˙s ̄1 for knee EXT in both conditions. There was an 18% (HVR) and 10% (MVR) decline in concentric and eccentric knee EXT peak torque. Peak FLEX torques were significantly (p , 0.05) reduced after HVR (16.7%) but not after the MVR condition (8%). There were similar declines in eccentric FLEX peak torque. Sprint times increased significantly (p , 0.05) during the HVR condition but not in the MVR condition; sprint times in the HVR condition were compromised as early as the third over. We conclude that a high volume of runs significantly reduces muscle function in the lower limbs, partly explaining the impairment in sprint performance. However, because batters slowed as early as the third over in the HVR condition, there may be some form of strategy used in anticipation of a higher overall workload. More middle wicket practices, focusing on repeat shuttle sprints while batting, should be included in the coaching program.

Students’ perceived experiences of a flipped classroom at a traditional South African university in comparison to the traditional classroom

- Description: The purpose of this study was to explore students’ perceived experiences of flipped classrooms at a traditional South African university in comparison to the traditional classroom. Universities across the world are confronted with a variety of problems. One of these challenges include the massification of higher education as more students now have access to universities resulting in larger class sizes and lower through put rates. Universities have traditionally made use of the face-to-face model of lectures and tutorials as a passive mode of course instruction and delivery. However, due to the massification of higher education, it has become very difficult for lecturers to communicate and collaborate with students. One of the ways that lecturers have attempted to overcome the problem of massification is to make use of technology to increase the delivery of course content. When lectures are made available online while the traditional class time is used to build conceptual understanding and cognitive skills among students, the approach is known as ‘flipping’ the classroom. Several studies have shown that this type of active classroom approach can perform better than traditional lectures when learning outcomes are compared. There is also a very limited body of knowledge available regarding students’ perceived experiences of flipped classrooms at traditional South African universities. The theoretical frameworks guiding this study are the Activity Theory and Constructivism, whilst a pragmatic paradigm was employed. The flipped classroom was used in one course of the Management and Commerce Faculty at a traditional university in South Africa. The study was divided into three cycles: The first cycle involved 4 weeks of traditional lectures, the second cycle of 4 weeks introduced blended learning into the course, while the third cycle of 4 weeks changed the content delivery method to a flipped classroom. At the end of each cycle a formal evaluation through focus groups interviews (with 10 students per cycle) and a questionnaire (that was administered to the class) was conducted to inform the next cycle. Throughout the research process, the researcher also kept detailed field notes to as an account of the planning, execution and reflection for each class. The researcher also observed the behavior of the students during the various research cycles to provide a ‘snapshot’ of the classes. The results of the study suggest that students prefer the use of the flipped classroom is it enables them to communicate with their peers and the lecturer, and providing them with opportunities to better understand learning content through discussions and reasoning, rather than the means of receiving information. Barriers that were identified included difficulty with learning strategies and technical assistance when students needed assistance. However, students were positive about both the use of the flipped classroom as opposed to the use of the traditional classroom.

An investigation of plant conservation strategies employed in Makhanda, South Africa: an educational exploration

In that context, this study advocates conservation education through use of plants on school grounds and visits to local herbaria and botanical gardens as part of the school curriculum. Trees growing on street verges in town suburbs are also a resource that could be using for teaching. School learners from three schools representing different areas of Makhanda (Grahamstown) participated in plant-related activities and were surveyed to determine their prior knowledge about plants and plant conservation. Learners answered a series of questions in writing using a funnel sequence and the inverted funnel sequence in questionnaire design. This motivated respondents to co-operate and fully complete a questionnaire. In addition, the non-participant observation technique was used to capture behavioural reactions to the activities in order to supplement the data generated through questionnaires and interviews. This proved to be a purposeful, systematic and a selective way of watching and listening to an interaction phenomenon as it takes place. Interviews and questionnaires revealed that most Makhanda residents (especially in rural and township areas) use traditional medicine and medicinal plants to treat many diseases. They also use plants for cultural activities. Traditional remedies are practised among the rural and township communities because of ease of availability, convenience, and also due to social, psychological and cultural reasons. Medicinal plants have been increasingly recognized for their role not only for health care, but also for improving the economic status. Community members and street vendors were also questioned using semi-structured interviews. Open-ended questions were used successfully to assess the person’s knowledge, attitudes, opinions, beliefs and feelings. This type of interview ensures that a specific question does not lose its purpose. These interviews were used to determine how community members see, interpret and relate to nature. In the interviews, I also assessed the real needs of the local communities because there is a tendency to think that our power, knowledge and resources can give us the right to predict what communities really need without actually asking them. When our imposed initiatives fail, we often accuse these communities of a lack of interest in our issue of interest. Documents on plants and their uses kept in the Selmar Schönland Herbarium were compared with the information given by community members and street vendors. Xhosa plant names and ethnobotanical information given by the community members and street vendors was used to augment existing information on plant use. A further aim of this study was to investigate the potential use of plant resources provided by the street trees and gardens for education. Makhanda streets were sampled and, of the 1 435 plants that were countered from 17 streets, only 15 indigenous species were represented, while 20 alien species were recorded. These trees can be used for lessons on both alien and indigenous plants. Notable differences in tree density and species richness were evident across suburbs with the highest density and richness found in the more affluent suburbs and poor representation of trees in the township. This will affect learner perceptions and viewpoints. The results from the analysed data revealed that use of the school grounds, botanical gardens, the local herbarium and town streets are effective in plant conservation education in schools and communities. These types of resources could be used for environmental education for future generations in South Africa and all over the world.

Mannan is a polysaccharide component of lignocellulose that is abundant in softwoods and legume seeds. Enzymatic hydrolysis of mannan by β-mannanases has various industrial applications, including use in biofuel and prebiotic mannooligosaccharide (MOS) production for the improvement of human and animal health. The industrial use of β-mannanases depends on their biochemical characteristics, such as their activity, stability and substrate specificity. Knowledge of their synergistic interactions with other enzymes is also useful for effective hydrolysis. Bacillus paralicheniformis SVD1 was used as a source for β-mannanases. The two mannanases of B. paralicheniformis SVD1 have not been biochemically characterized apart from minor characterization of crude β-mannanase activity. The protein sequences of the two β-mannanases, of glycosyl hydrolase family 5 and 26, have a 95% - 96% identity to the β-mannanases of B. licheniformis DSM13T (=ATCC14580T). These small protein sequence differences could lead to quite different biochemical characteristics. These mannanases were characterized as these enzymes may have industrially useful characteristics. To induce mannanase production, B. paralicheniformis SVD1 was cultured in broth containing the mannan substrate locust bean gum. Various growth curve parameters were measured over 72 h. Mannanase activity was the highest after 48 h of growth - this was the time at which mannanase activity was concentrated, using 3 kDa centrifugal filtration devices, for biochemical characterization of the crude activity. Zymography revealed that the crude concentrated mannanase fraction consisted of at least two mannanases with relative molecular weights (MWs) of 29.6 kDa and 33 kDa. This was smaller than expected – based on their theoretical molecular masses. Protease activity, which was detected in the broth, was probably the reason. There were two pH optima, pH 5.0 and pH 7.0, which also indicated the presence of two mannanases. The concentrated mannanase displayed characteristics that were expected of a B. paralicheniformis β-mannanase. The temperature optimum was 50°C and the activity loss was less than 7% at 50°C after 24 h. Substrate specificity assays revealed that there was predominantly mannanase activity present. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis of mannan and MOS hydrolysis showed that mainly M2 and M3 MOS were produced; only MOS with a degree of polymerization of 4 or higher were hydrolyzed. Hydrolysis was minimal on mannoligosaccharides with galactose substituents. Activity and MOS production was the highest on soluble, low branched mannan substrates. The highest activity observed was on konjac glucomannan. Purification of the mannanase activity was then attempted using various methods. Ammonium sulfate precipitation, acetone precipitation, as well as centrifugal filtration device concentration was assessed for concentration of the mannanase activity.Concentration was not very successful due to low activity yields (≤ 20%). Anion exchange chromatography (AEC) and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) was used for purification. AEC gave good activity yield and fold purification, but SDS-PAGE analysis revealed the presence of many different proteins so further purification was necessary. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that there were only a few protein contaminants in the SEC fraction. However, the yield was too low to allow for biochemical characterization. The optimized purification procedure, which partially purified the mannanase activity, used 85% ammonium sulfate precipitation, followed by AEC. The fold purification was high (88.9) and the specific activity was 29.5 U.mg-1. A zymogram of the partially purified mannanase showed a mannanase active band with a MW of 40 - 41 kDa. A serine protease inhibitor, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), was added during the purification steps. This indicated that the mannanase/s in the crude concentrate, without PMSF added, was hydrolyzed by serine protease activity. Native PAGE zymograms suggested that at least two different isoforms of mannanases were present. Additional purification would be required to determine the true characteristics of the mannanase/s. The biochemical characteristics of the crude and partially purified mannanases were similar. The pH optima of the partially purified mannanases were different; the pH optima were 6.0 and 9.0. The substrate specificities were similar, except that the partially purified mannanases displayed no cellulase and β-D-galactosidase activity, but showed a small amount of α-L-arabinase activity. The partially purified mannanase and a Cyamopsis tetragonolobus GH27 α-galactosidase synergistically hydrolyzed locust bean gum. The M50G50 combination displayed the highest extent of hydrolysis; after 24 h there was a 1.39 fold increase in reducing sugar release and the degree of synergy (DS) was 4.64. TLC analysis indicated that synergy increased the release of small MOS. These MOS could be useful as prebiotics. The synergy between the partially purified mannanase and the commercial cellulase mixture Cellic® CTec2 (Novozymes) on spent coffee grounds (SCG) was also determined. SCG is an abundant industrial waste product that has high mannan content. The SCG was pretreated using NaOH, and the monosaccharide, soluble phenolics and insoluble contents were determined. Glucose and mannose were the dominant monosaccharides in the SCG; the pretreated SCG contained 20.4% (w/w) glucose and 18.5% (w/w) mannose, respectively. The NaOH pretreatment improved mannanase hydrolysis of SCG. It resulted in the opening up and swelling of the SCG particles and removed some of the insoluble solids. The partially purified B. paralicheniformis SVD1 mannanase displayed no detectable activity on SCG, but showed synergy with CTec2, in terms of DS, on untreated and NaOH pretreated SCG. This is the first report of mannanasecellulase synergy on SCG; other studies found that increased hydrolysis was due to additive effects. The results obtained in this study are only an initial assessment of the biochemical properties of B. paralicheniformis SVD1 mannanase activity and its synergy with other enzymes. These results can be used to inform future studies.

Elucidating the Molecular Basis of the Interaction between the β2-integrin, αXβ2, and the low-affinity IgE Receptor, CD23

- Description: The low affinity IgE receptor, CD23, is involved in a myriad of immune reactions. It is not only a receptor for IgE, but also functions in the regulation of IgE synthesis, isotype switching in B cells, and induction of the inflammatory response. These effector functions of CD23 arise through its interaction with another leukocyte-specific cell surface receptor – the β2 integrin subfamily. However, this interaction has not been fully described. It has been shown that CD23 is capable of interacting with the β3 and β5 integrin β-subunit of integrins via a basic RKC motif in a metal cation-independent fashion. The currently proposed mechanism for the interaction between CD23 and the integrin superfamily was applied to the β2 integrin subfamily. In this study the interaction was probed for whether or not the RKC motif governs the interaction as well. This was done by performing bioinformatics docking predictions between the CD23 and αXβ2 integrin proteins. This revealed that in the absence of cations, the RKC motif is involved in interaction with the integrin αI domain. However, since physiologically integrin activity has been shown to be regulated by metal cations, docking predictions were also performed in the presence of such cations. This showed the interaction to involve novel acidic motifs within the CD23 protein, GEF and LDL. This same pattern of interaction was seen in docking predictions between CD23 and the β2- and β3I-like domains. To further investigate, recombinant proteins of sCD23 and the αXI domain were produced using E. coli expression systems. The DNA sequence was mutated to produce mutant versions of the CD23 RKC and GEF motifs as well as a high-affinity locked αXI domain. These proteins were used in subsequent SPR spectroscopy analysis of the binding affinity between immobilised integrin and CD23 analyte. It was shown that the mutation within the RKC motif reduced the binding affinity under cation-independence, especially when the Arg172 residue was substituted. However binding was not completely lost. This result was supported by synthetic peptides containing the same RKC motif and substitutions. These showed complete loss in binding in the double RKΔAA substitution, suggesting the involvement of other residues in the RKC-dependent interaction. In contrast, under cation dependence, the RKC motif substitutions showed no effect on binding affinity, while the GEF motif substitution exhibited near complete loss in binding. This same effect on binding was validated by U937 cell-based ELISA using live cells. This showed decreased capture of differentiated U937 cells, expressing the αXβ2 integrin, by immobilised recombinant sCD23 protein. In this study it was noted that, 2 contrary to the SPR analysis, metal cations allowed for a higher titre of cells to be captured in comparison to the cation-free binding.

- Description: The modern world is confronted with many and diverse social and environmental challenges of high complexity. In South Africa, rapid and sustainable development is needed to address high levels of poverty and unemployment but this development has to take place in the context of an environment that is already severely impacted by human activities. Sound and relevant scientific input and advice, covering the full scope of each challenge, is essential for effective decisions and actions to address the needs. South Africa has the benefit of strong scientific capacity but the country’s National Development Plan reported that national research priorities were not always consistent with South Africa’s needs. We investigate the validity of that conclusion in the coastal and marine sciences by examining presentations made at the 2017 South African Marine Science Symposium on the theme of ‘Unlocking the ocean’s economic potential whilst maintaining social and ecological resilience’. Despite the theme, only 21% of the presentations were judged to be actionable and directly relevant to societal needs, as defined by the criteria used. Less than 7% were evaluated as being interdisciplinary within the natural sciences and approximately 10% were found to include both natural and human sciences. Poor representation by the human sciences was also noteworthy. This preliminary assessment highlights the need for an urgent review of the disciplinary representation and approaches in marine and coastal science in South Africa in the context of the priority practical needs of the country now and into the future.

- Description: Here we describe an interdisciplinary and multi-country initiative to develop rapid, participatory methods to assess the vulnerability of coastal communities and facilitate adaptation to climate change in data-poor regions. The methods were applied in Madagascar as a case study. The initiative centered on an exploratory research exercise in two communities in the south-west of Madagascar, a workshop held in Antananarivo in June 2016, combined with a component on communicating ocean science and climate change to stakeholders. It utilized innovative and rapid approaches to combine global and local skills and information on adaptation and resilience building, taking cognizance of national policies, and was based on the principles of a holistic, integrated and participatory approach. This paper summarizes the activities undertaken and assesses how effective they were in achieving the project goals, as well as presenting examples of the outputs obtained.

The methods were applied in Madagascar as a case study. The initiative centered on an exploratory research exercise in two communities in the south-west of Madagascar, a workshop held in Antananarivo in June 2016, combined with a component on communicating ocean science and climate change to stakeholders. It utilized innovative and rapid approaches to combine global and local skills and information on adaptation and resilience building, taking cognizance of national policies, and was based on the principles of a holistic, integrated and participatory approach. This paper summarizes the activities undertaken and assesses how effective they were in achieving the project goals, as well as presenting examples of the outputs obtained.

We investigate the validity of that conclusion in the coastal and marine sciences by examining presentations made at the 2017 South African Marine Science Symposium on the theme of 'Unlocking the ocean's economic potential whilst maintaining social and ecological resilience'. Despite the theme, only 21% of the presentations were judged to be actionable and directly relevant to societal needs, as defined by the criteria used. Less than 7% were evaluated as being interdisciplinary within the natural sciences and approximately 10% were found to include both natural and human sciences. Poor representation by the human sciences was also noteworthy. This preliminary assessment highlights the need for an urgent review of the disciplinary representation and approaches in marine and coastal science in South Africa in the context of the priority practical needs of the country now and into the future.

We therefore suggest an approach that focuses on enhancing individual and social-relational enablers. Moreover, we propose a bottom-up patchwork approach to collaborative stewardship premised on the notion of pluralism. This would focus on building new interpersonal relationships and collaborative capacity through small collective actions. Taking a relational, pluralistic approach to fostering collaborative stewardship is particularly important in contested, socially heterogeneous landscapes. Drawing on our study and the literature, we propose guiding principles for implementing relational, pluralistic approaches to collaborative stewardship and suggest future research directions for supporting such approaches.

We sought to characterise the practice of stewardship in South Africa, to better understand the relationship between theory and practice. We found that practitioners’ understandings of stewardship coalesce around two core notions: the idea of stewardship as ‘responsible use and care’ of nature, and stewardship as a ‘balancing act’ between stewards’ use of natural resources for agricultural production and their responsibility to protect and manage the wider ecosystem. Introduced to technology early on in their lives has lead to a prolific use of social media. As possible future leaders, millennials also have the highest employment turnaround. The increased turnaround is because millennials are always on the lookout for better opportunities and purpose to meet their need for accelerated growth together with their need to belong. Social media platforms have the propensity to provide instantaneous and gratifying rewards, through various ways including self disclosure online. As millennials are seeking purpose and reward, communicating on a social media platform is way more rewarding than attempting to communicate. With the arena of face to face communication shifting to online communication this is becoming more amplified. This research study explored how millennials prepared to portray their content on Facebook and Instagram. A biographical narrative approach effectively acquired 15 individual millennials in-depth co-constructed narratives on how they prepare their online social media, and analysed through contexualising the co-constructed into a re-storied narrative with Connelly & Clandinin’s (2009) narrative analysis approach. Goffman’s dramaturgical approach, a conceptual framework based on micro social interaction was used to obtain insight into millennials online portrayal. The findings revealed that all of the participants utilised one or more of the following dramaturgical metaphors to portray themselves; a) they utilised props and /or filters to set the environment and filter their image online, b) they managed their impressions by being intentional in the selection of their images, and c) by intentionally selecting images or messages that portray roles their audience would affirm them for. The findings of this study highlights and provides insight in millennials’ preoccupation, distraction and portrayal online, which feeds into their need to be seen in a positive light and be affirmed. These findings provide social workers with new insight and perspective into millennials unspoken rich indepth narratives when millennials portray themselves online

The study sought to answer the research question: What are the critical success factors for CSR programmes in South Africa? An empirical, quantitative study was conducted by surveying implementers of CSR projects in South Africa (n=81). The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships between the independent variables, namely conceptualisation, implementation, reporting and evaluation, and the dependent variable, namely success of CSR. The empirical research was underpinned by stakeholder theory relating the practice of CSR to a multi-stakeholder context, and project management of life-cycle phases as the implementing arm of CSR projects. The key findings indicated that conceptualisation and implementation were positively and significantly related to success of CSR and that reporting, and evaluation had no significant relationship to success of CSR. The model that included the distance of the fence from the road, habitat type adjacent to the road, and the presence of a hill in the road (i.e., elevation) or a bank on the side of the road best explained roadkill occurrence.

- Description: This thesis presents a series of three case studies from data collected as part of a research project exploring the process and impact of a service-learning programme with caregivers and their children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Following a descriptive case series design, both quantitative and qualitative data are presented to create a comprehensive and rich understanding of each case. In particular, the data tracks change processes in the subjective well-being of the caregiver, the quality of the caregiver-child relationship and the functional development of the child over a twenty-one-week period of receiving public health services and an eight-week period of adding the service-learning programme. The paper also presents qualitative data on the caregivers’ perceptions of and experiences of the public services and the servicelearning programme that the caregivers and their children received. The findings provide important insight into the caregivers’ perceptions of giving and receiving care, with the caregivers’ experiencing significant levels of distress and prominent barriers to accessing healthcare that were seemingly eased with the addition of the service-learning programme. The findings also point to a notable disparity between the quantitative findings and the qualitative interviews with questions being raised about the research being viewed as an intervention in itself.

- Description: In June 2014, I was introduced to Christine Dixie by a film maker I had worked with on a previous project. Christine was looking for a composer who could arrange a soundtrack around musical themes that she had commissioned from Jared Lang to accompany her video installation To Be King (Dixie 2014. Jared composed five different melodies that I wove into a palette of sounds that comprised the soundtrack. To Be King was exhibited at the National Arts Festival in 2014 as part of the Main Festival. It moved to Cape Town in 2015 and 2017, to Venice and London in 2017, and to Lithuania in 2018. In 2017, Christine approached me to compose a soundtrack for a different work, based again on seventeenth century Spanish artist, Velázquez’ painting ‘Las Meninas’ (1656), but this time, using a series of sculptures representing the different figures in the painting, a reinterpretation with strong Eastern Cape (South Africa) themes and associations. Christine proposed reimagining the figures in the painting by clothing them in Shweshwe 1 material and placing African masks on each of them, masks that she had sought out during her travels around Africa. The use of Shweshwe material, ties the figures very closely to the Eastern Cape, and in particular, close to where I grew up in Alice, just 60 kilometres away from where it is manufactured in King William’s Town. Alice is important in the unfolding of this portfolio as Ntsikana, purportedly the first Xhosa person to be converted to Christianity and a prophet, lived in Peddie (which is about 70 kilometers from Grahamstown and Rhodes University) and Gqora, near the Kat River District which is located in the Amathola District near Alice. (Kumalo 2015, p.26). Alice is steeped in history, and is the town where Lovedale Mission Station was founded in 1824 and later, the Lovedale Press in 1861. Therefore, this project felt close to my roots, hence this interaction between Western and African cultures is very relevant to my world view and has impacted on my scoring of this music. I was initially challenged by the idea that the project would require a deeper understanding of traditional Xhosa music and while I had been exposed to Xhosa culture while growing up in Alice, my formative years were largely shaped by the culture of my Christian parents who immigrated to South Africa from England during the 1960s. During the first decade of the twentieth century, in my capacity as a sound engineer, I was tasked with recording and mastering a double CD called The Bow Project. Various South African composers were invited to transcribe and paraphrase or reimagine traditional Xhosa bow music for the classical string quartet. The uhadi songs 2 of Nofinishi Dywili formed the basis for many of these intercultural explorations, and I recorded and mastered the string quartets as well as 12 individual recordings of Dywili’s music. I spent many hours listening to Dywili’s recordings while I mastered them, but though I was very familiar with how they sounded, I realised, as I started compiling this portfolio, that I was not familiar with their notation and rhythmic structures. I approach sound engineering with a very different ear and sonic perspective to that of a composer. To learn more about uhadi bow music I visited the International Library of African Music (ILAM) which is housed by Rhodes University in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. Here I consulted with sound engineer and African music specialist, Elijah Madiba, on Xhosa instruments and traditional music-making. With Madiba’s assistance I listened carefully to different bow performances and examined a variety of instruments. After this introduction I loaned a selection of recordings from the ILAM collection and listened to them as carefully as I could. Every time I listened, I seemed to hear something different, both melodically and rhythmically. To gain a deeper understanding of how this music was created I decided to transcribe some of the songs. Following a steep learning curve I completed transcriptions of two songs with my transcriptions including a wealth of vocal parts. As my ears grew accustomed to the sound world I heard additional counter melodies. Notating the rhythms using staff notation was challenging, as this music is created according to a different format, but I am familiar with staff notation and if I was going to use this material while composing then I needed to remain with that which was familiar. I finally settled on notating with shifting time signatures and the first song is scored in bars of 3/4, 4/4, and 2/4 while the other song uses 3/4, 2/4. It was a very worthwhile exercise and after completion I humbly set about composing the eleven pieces that would musically express Dixie’s new work: Worlding the White Spirit Maiden (2019).
