An evaluation of the impact of the Rhodes University Master of Education in Mathematics Education Programme in Namibia from the perspectives of its graduates

- Description: Rhodes University (RU) has been offering a MEdME (Masters in Education, Mathematics Education) degree in Namibia for over 12 years without evaluating its success and impact. This study aimed to evaluate the MEdME programme’s impact on the graduates and on mathematics education in Namibia from the perspectives of its graduates. The study also evaluated the factors that enabled or limited the impact of the programme from the perspective of RU staff members. A three-phased research study was implemented to achieve this. Phase I was a MEdME theses audit to analyze what each graduate researched which then guided the sampling process. Phase II was a distribution of a questionnaire to willing MEdME graduates to elicit their views about the programme's impact. In Phase III, selected graduates were interviewed to follow up on the questionnaire. The RU academic staff members were also interviewed about the programme's design and rationale, as well as their perspectives on its impact on graduates' professional lives. The study found that graduates believed that the programme made them more critical reflexive practitioners (CRPs) who: are now self-introspective, can reflect in context and are competent researchers. This is a sign of the programme attaining its objectives of developing and growing CRPs and graduates, who have advanced in their fields, including their ability to do research. The programme also created opportunities for graduates to study further and/or publish papers. The programme further opened up opportunities for graduates’ promotion into positions of influence in the Ministry of Education where they can positively impact on mathematics education transformation in Namibia (METN). The graduates consequently noticed improvements in some areas but they also noticed room for improvement in other areas of mathematics education in Namibia. This study therefore suggests that more mathematics teachers study further, improve their research capacity and contribute more to METN. The study also suggests a national campaign to increase mathematics teachers' content knowledge. Furthermore, the programme should reintroduce coursework to address students’ subject content knowledge. RU is also advised to explore offering a Professional MEd in Namibia for students who want to focus more on improving their mathematics content knowledge. - Description: This research took the form of a case study investigating the effectiveness of a single hub in South Africa, namely Hub@Goethe in Johannesburg. The context of the creative economy and creative industries provided insight into the experiences of creative cultural labourers in the new economic model. The context emphasised the research problem which considered the difficulties experienced by creative and cultural entrepreneurs and their career paths who, through labour precarity, remain isolated from the market, without access to physical spaces, network connections and business knowledge to realise their business ideas. The literature reviewed revealed how co-working office spaces, creative spaces and hubs provide creative entrepreneurs with the spatial infrastructure, amenities, and network access to mitigate challenges in the creative cultural sectors. These spaces offer a multitude of different amenities which is specific to their community’s needs. Guided by the theory of social capital and structural holes reviewed in the literature, the effectiveness was assessed by the hub’s ability to provide network access benefits or resource endowments. The research looked at whether the hub could provide creative cultural entrepreneurs with resource benefits such as a) access to social interactions, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, b) access to business or professional skills-based education programmes and mentorship, c) access to market and d) generation both social and economic benefit. The research adopted a qualitative approach, seeking insights into the creative entrepreneurs’ experiences at the hub utilising one-to-one interviews. The thematic analysis confirmed that the hub was effective overall in providing entrepreneurs with access to benefits or resource endowments embedded in the network, confirming that hubs may be an effective tool in mitigating difficulties experienced by creative entrepreneurs in the creative industries. The research also showed areas of improvement where the hub could increase its experienced effectiveness, especially in reference to routes to market. - Description: Background: Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are multi-causal soft tissue disorders that result in disability, discomfort, and pain. MSDs are prevalent in 21.5% of the world’s population and carry a great financial and personal burden to individuals, businesses and countries alike. The multi-casual nature of MSDs has resulted in a vast amount of literature being published on how to prevent and manage the disorders, to the extent that navigating through the literature to find effective and context-specific interventions has become time-consuming and difficult. This is the case in South Africa, where ergonomists have no guide or framework to navigate MSD literature, and context-specific literature is limited. Aims: This study aimed to assist ergonomists in South Africa navigate the MSD literature to identify and select appropriate MSD prevention and management interventions. To do so, three objectives of the study were identified: 1. Review MSD literature to identify effective MSD prevention and management interventions. 2. Create a framework to act as a guide for ergonomists to navigate MSD prevention and management studies. 3. To verify the suitability of the framework in the South African context. To achieve these objectives, the study took a two-phased approach. Phase 1: A scoping review of MSD literature was conducted to identify effective MSD prevention and management approaches. Sixteen (n=16) prevention strategies and fourteen (n=14) management strategies were identified. The information from the review was analysed and grouped into five hierarchical levels of interventions (“Law”, “Organisational Policies”, “Management Systems”, Workplace Interventions”, and “Individual”). This information, along with a conceptual model created for the navigation of the literature, was used to create a draft framework for musculoskeletal disorder prevention and management. It was concluded that although there were many effective MSD interventions, there was a lack of South African-specific literature. Phase 2: Interviews with five certified ergonomists working in the South African context were conducted to verify the framework’s suitability for a South African working environment. The interviews identified two MSD prevention and three MSD management themes as effective in South Africa. Both prevention themes (“training and education” and “workplace interventions”) were also mentioned to be part of the stakeholders’ ideal MSD prevention programme, further reinforcing their usefulness. The use of “workplace interventions” was also identified to be effective in MSD management, alongside interventions at the management level and the use of alternative tools and equipment. However, the lack of managerial buy-in was identified as a barrier to MSD prevention. Stakeholders also highlighted that job specification and work hardening was an MSD strategy missing from the framework that was effective in South Africa's MSD management. The use of surveillance practices was found to be ineffective in South Africa, with lots of resistance towards it from workers. Conclusion: The framework presented in Phase 1 identified many effective MSD interventions; however, only a few were found to be applicable to the South African working context during Phase 2. Investigating the expression of three small open reading frames encoded on Helicoverpa armigera stunt virus RNA 1

- Description: The Helicoverpa armigera stunt virus (HaSV), belonging to the Family Alphatetraviridae (Genus: Omegatetravirus), is a non-enveloped insect virus encapsidating a bi-partite, positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. RNA1 encodes the replicase, as well as three small open reading frames (ORFs) arranged in tandem, and overlapping with the 3’ end of the replicase ORF. These ORFs, designated p11, p15 and p8, encode putative proteins of unknown function. The p11 and p15 ORFs are conserved in the genome of the related Omegatetravirus, Dendrolimus punctatus tetravirus. In HaSV, the stop codon of p11 is followed immediately by the start of p15, whereas the stop of p15 and start of p8 are separated by a glycine intercodon. Furthermore, only p11 is known to have a recognizable Kozak sequence. The aim of this study was to determine the expression and function of these three small proteins in the HaSV infectious lifecycle. The authenticity of the viral cDNA sequence, encoding the three small ORFs, was validated by sequencing multiple cDNA clones of the relevant region in viral RNA (vRNA), purified from infectious HaSV particles. The sequence of all three ORFs was conserved in seven cDNA clones, while point mutations were observed in each of two remaining cDNA clones, suggesting that the ORFs were conserved in infectious virus. Polyclonal antisera were raised against a p11 peptide, and a recombinant p15-p8 fusion protein (p23) expressed and purified from Escherichia coli. The affinity of the anti-p23 antiserum was confirmed by western blot analysis, while that of the anti-p11 antiserum was confirmed using immunofluorescence microscopy, as attempted expression of recombinant p11 in E. coli appeared to be toxic. The antisera were used to detect expression of the small proteins in HaSV-infected H. armigera larvae by western blot analysis. A band migrating at approximately 34 kDa was detected by both antisera in infected larvae, absent in uninfected larvae, suggesting the expression of a p11-p15-p8 polyprotein. Protein bands of 11 kDa and 8 kDa were also detected by the anti-p11 and anti-p23 antisera, respectively. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that the polyprotein would be produced by a novel type of stop codon read-through, however the mechanism required for individual expression could not be definitively determined. The mechanism by which these ORFs are translated was further investigated by expressing p11-p15, tagged with FLAG and enhanced green flourescent protein (EGFP) at its amino- and carboxyl-termini respectively (FLAG-p11-p15-EGFP), in Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells detected by flourescence microscopy. Punctate structures were observed throughout the cytoplasm that were also detected with antiFLAG, anti-p11 and anti-p23 antisera, complementing results obtained in previous studies. Since p15 does not exhibit a strong recognizable Kozak like p11, the dependency of p15 expression on that of p11 was investigated by mutating this construct such that p15 occurred in a +1 frame to p11. Both EGFP and anti-p23 fluorescence was detected with the same cytoplasmic distribution as the unmutated construct, whereas nothing was detected by anti-FLAG and anti-p11. - Description: The Helicoverpa armigera stunt virus (HaSV), belonging to the Family Alphatetraviridae (Genus: Omegatetravirus), is a non-enveloped insect virus encapsidating a bi-partite, positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. RNA1 encodes the replicase, as well as three small open reading frames (ORFs) arranged in tandem, and overlapping with the 3’ end of the replicase ORF. These ORFs, designated p11, p15 and p8, encode putative proteins of unknown function. The p11 and p15 ORFs are conserved in the genome of the related Omegatetravirus, Dendrolimus punctatus tetravirus. In HaSV, the stop codon of p11 is followed immediately by the start of p15, whereas the stop of p15 and start of p8 are separated by a glycine intercodon. Furthermore, only p11 is known to have a recognizable Kozak sequence. The aim of this study was to determine the expression and function of these three small proteins in the HaSV infectious lifecycle. The authenticity of the viral cDNA sequence, encoding the three small ORFs, was validated by sequencing multiple cDNA clones of the relevant region in viral RNA (vRNA), purified from infectious HaSV particles. The sequence of all three ORFs was conserved in seven cDNA clones, while point mutations were observed in each of two remaining cDNA clones, suggesting that the ORFs were conserved in infectious virus. Polyclonal antisera were raised against a p11 peptide, and a recombinant p15-p8 fusion protein (p23) expressed and purified from Escherichia coli. The affinity of the anti-p23 antiserum was confirmed by western blot analysis, while that of the anti-p11 antiserum was confirmed using immunofluorescence microscopy, as attempted expression of recombinant p11 in E. coli appeared to be toxic. The antisera were used to detect expression of the small proteins in HaSV-infected H. armigera larvae by western blot analysis. A band migrating at approximately 34 kDa was detected by both antisera in infected larvae, absent in uninfected larvae, suggesting the expression of a p11-p15-p8 polyprotein. Protein bands of 11 kDa and 8 kDa were also detected by the anti-p11 and anti-p23 antisera, respectively. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that the polyprotein would be produced by a novel type of stop codon read-through, however the mechanism required for individual expression could not be definitively determined. The mechanism by which these ORFs are translated was further investigated by expressing p11-p15, tagged with FLAG and enhanced green flourescent protein (EGFP) at its amino- and carboxyl-termini respectively (FLAG-p11-p15-EGFP), in Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells detected by flourescence microscopy. Punctate structures were observed throughout the cytoplasm that were also detected with antiFLAG, anti-p11 and anti-p23 antisera, complementing results obtained in previous studies. Since p15 does not exhibit a strong recognizable Kozak like p11, the dependency of p15 expression on that of p11 was investigated by mutating this construct such that p15 occurred in a +1 frame to p11. Both EGFP and anti-p23 fluorescence was detected with the same cytoplasmic distribution as the unmutated construct, whereas nothing was detected by anti-FLAG and anti-p11. Cybersecurity has been put in place to safeguard the internet from these cyber threats, yet there is an ever-growing concern regarding the implementation of cybersecurity, both globally and in South Africa. With the increase in cyber threats, there is a growing need and demand for IT professionals with the requisite cybersecurity skills and knowledge to combat and mitigate these threats. However, an ever-increasing cybersecurity skills gap has been identified both globally and in South Africa. Yet the specific cybersecurity skills demand, needs and challenges of IT professionals in South Africa are currently unknown. This study therefore investigated the cybersecurity skills demand, needs, and challenges of IT professionals in South Africa by reporting on IT professionals’ perceptions in this regard. An online questionnaire was used to gather information for this and was distributed to IT professionals using various online platforms. According to the findings of the study, there are several challenges such as lack of time, lack of funding and a lack of resources that South Africa must overcome in order to address the cybersecurity skills gap. The study explores CSR investments from a community perspective, community participation, supporting enterprise and social trust development within the respective communities. While Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers (REIPP) made every effort to implement CSR as part of their contribution to developing the communities they operate in, CSR is used as a tick box exercise for many. While some of these companies do it for more than just bragging rights, these CSR strategies normally follow a top-down approach. Some of these implementation programmes are purely based on desktop research and are so far removed from the current realities and needs of the communities that the money and effort spend does not have the multiplier effect that everyone desires. The study aimed to analyse Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from a community perspective, thus, the study explored the view of the community on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The study discovered that many of the respondents have a general understanding of CSR and how it should impact the community. This impact, however, is not being seen with the research indicating that most of the youth are uneducated and unemployed. The differences of opinion between the police and community causes issues of mistrust and disrespect and can be indicative of a fundamental conflict between them. This treatise explores the principles of conflict management in community policing. The study examines the different theories relating to conflict and the interdisciplinary perspectives on conflict management styles and how this literature relates to community policing. The study applied the interpretive paradigm as a qualitative design to understand the social reality experiences of participants in the empirical study of community policing and how they perceived the research problem; namely, the trust relationships between police officials and community members. A purposive sampling method was used and five Community Police Forum members and five former police officials participated and provided abundant and accurate data that assisted in answering the research questions and guided the researcher towards suitable conflict management tools for community policing. Coding procedures and thematic analysis were applied in the study to perform the data analysis. The findings suggest that utilising conflict management principles can be useful as a tool to manage conflict between the community and police; particular in gang and drug related crime areas. Countless studies have established that worldwide franchises offer more sustainable business development for entrepreneurs and a higher success rate for start-up businesses. This is, however, not an exclusive formula for success as the relationship between the franchisee and franchisor is dynamic with the economic landscape always changing. Entrepreneurs often display traits that do not always coincide with the franchisor’s framework. By developing a framework, the study aimed to supply possible solutions for improved alignment between the franchisee and the franchisor resulting in a prosperous relationship enabling economic growth and impacting positively on the unemployment crises in South Africa. A literature study was followed up with a case study research approach. The context was singular, namely a branded fitment centre franchise within the tyre fitment industry in South Africa. A schedule of interview protocols was undertaken with embedded multiple units of analyses based on feedback from franchise industry expert, franchisor representatives and franchisees who own various fitment centres. The case study research explored the factors that contributed to the successful alignment of the entrepreneurial paradigm to the franchise network requirements within a national franchise retail tyre fitment brand. Factors that ensure improved alignment between the franchisee and the franchisor requirements were explored in this research. Franchising provides comparable risks and benefits associated with other entrepreneurial ventures. However, entrepreneurs have a stronger chance of survival when aligning themselves with a franchise network. Franchising is critical for economic development. The study indicates that franchising influences the entrepreneurial paradigm. - Description: South African correctional facilities are riddled with issues such as overcrowding and high recidivism rates. Recidivism refers to the tendency of a convicted criminal to re-offend once released. This is mainly due to the lack of rehabilitative programmes and infrastructure to aid in rehabilitating a convict to not reoffend and to earn an honest living. With unemployment being a significant factor in South Africa, society intentionally makes it more difficult to find employment if one has a criminal record. We should consider the fact that today’s prisoners are tomorrow’s neighbours. Therefore rehabilitation in correctional facilities should be the most important part of the incarceration programme (Cox, 2013). Many South African prisoners experience conditions such as being locked up for 23 hours a day in a cell crammed with two to three times more the number of inmates the facility is capacitated for with little to no access to the natural environment. Thomas Ouard, architect and PhD at the Nantes School of Architecture in France, indicated that there is a direct relationship between a prisoner’s psychological health and the surroundings perceived by the prisoner on a daily basis and that the opportunity to experience landscapes and vegetation, even though large windows, can significantly aid the mental health of inmates (Ouard, 2015). Additionally, Dr Söderlund, the current chairperson of Biophilic Cities Australia, proved through her research that physiological evidence indicates that biophilic principles applied in prisons, through patterns of vegetative areas and organic architectural patterns, can greatly aid in rehabilitating prisoners and can contribute to relaxation, stress relief, and feelings of refuge and peace (Söderlund & Newman, 2017). There are four levels of security in South African prisons: supermaximum, maximum, medium, and minimum-security. Generally, medium- and minimum-security prisons attempt to explore rehabilitative programmes the most. South African prison facilities are often located on the outskirts of a town, which causes difficulties for family and friends to visit inmates. The facilities also struggle with expenses regarding access to essential services, lack of operational medical staff, costly transfers of prisoners, and procurement of supplies and food stock (United Nations Office for Project Services [UNOPS], 2016). - Description: South African correctional facilities are riddled with issues such as overcrowding and high recidivism rates. Recidivism refers to the tendency of a convicted criminal to re-offend once released. This is mainly due to the lack of rehabilitative programmes and infrastructure to aid in rehabilitating a convict to not reoffend and to earn an honest living. With unemployment being a significant factor in South Africa, society intentionally makes it more difficult to find employment if one has a criminal record. We should consider the fact that today’s prisoners are tomorrow’s neighbours. Therefore rehabilitation in correctional facilities should be the most important part of the incarceration programme (Cox, 2013). Many South African prisoners experience conditions such as being locked up for 23 hours a day in a cell crammed with two to three times more the number of inmates the facility is capacitated for with little to no access to the natural environment. Thomas Ouard, architect and PhD at the Nantes School of Architecture in France, indicated that there is a direct relationship between a prisoner’s psychological health and the surroundings perceived by the prisoner on a daily basis and that the opportunity to experience landscapes and vegetation, even though large windows, can significantly aid the mental health of inmates (Ouard, 2015). Additionally, Dr Söderlund, the current chairperson of Biophilic Cities Australia, proved through her research that physiological evidence indicates that biophilic principles applied in prisons, through patterns of vegetative areas and organic architectural patterns, can greatly aid in rehabilitating prisoners and can contribute to relaxation, stress relief, and feelings of refuge and peace (Söderlund & Newman, 2017). There are four levels of security in South African prisons: supermaximum, maximum, medium, and minimum-security. Generally, medium- and minimum-security prisons attempt to explore rehabilitative programmes the most. South African prison facilities are often located on the outskirts of a town, which causes difficulties for family and friends to visit inmates. The facilities also struggle with expenses regarding access to essential services, lack of operational medical staff, costly transfers of prisoners, and procurement of supplies and food stock (United Nations Office for Project Services [UNOPS], 2016). It assisted in increasing the economic growth of countries as it allowed the flow of goods and capital between countries and created many employment opportunities locally. Emerging markets, especially Africa, forms a pivotal part of the global automotive industry. The South African automotive industry as the largest manufacturing and third largest economic sector in South Africa, has been acknowledged by government as a prime source of economic growth. The South African manufacturing businesses, in particular the automotive component manufactures (ACMs) are reliant on inventory for automotive manufacturing. In 2019, the world was hit by the Coronavirus virus outbreak known as COVID-19, which became a global health pandemic that significantly affected the global economy. The pandemic and lockdown measures implemented, seriously affected the automotive industry, in particular inventory management as it led to raw materials inventory shortages due to delivery delays. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to investigate the inventory management decisions influencing effective inventory management in the South African automotive component manufacturing (SAACM) industry prior to Covid-19 and whether and how it changed since the Covid-19 pandemic. The comprehensive literature review identified four inventory management decisions as independent variables (inventory forecasting, inventory storage, inventory control and inventory staff capabilities management) and effective inventory management as the dependent variable in the proposed hypothesised model. The model was tested to establish the influence of the identified four inventory management decisions on effective inventory management in ACMs prior to Covid-19 and then again since Covid-19. A quantitative research approach was followed to collect data required for the hypothesis testing. Nonprobability sampling in particular judgemental sampling was utilised for this study by selecting respondents employed by ACMs in South Africa as logistics managers, supply chain managers, production supervisors, master production schedulers, cycle count operators and warehouse staff. A selfadministered internet-based questionnaire was used to obtain the data from the target sample comprising 200 respondents, of which 162 were usable for further statistical analysis. Data was analysed first for prior to and then for since Covid-19 using Statistica Version 14 computer software. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to extract the variables and validate the measuring instrument. The Cronbach's alpha values for reliability were confirmed for each of the variables identified in the two sets of EFAs. All four independent variables (inventory v management decisions) and the dependent variable (effective inventory management) for prior to as well as since Covid-19 were found to be valid and reliable and retained for further analyses. The results of the Pearson product moment correlation coefficients reported mostly weak and moderate associations between variables for both prior to and since Covid-19. The results of the multiple regression analysis (MRA) for prior to Covid-19 found four statistically significant relationships between the four independent variables - inventory forecasting management, inventory storage management, inventory control management and inventory staff capabilities management and the dependent variable effective inventory management. The results of the MRA for since Covid-19 found two statistically significant relationships between two independent variables inventory forecasting management and inventory resource management and the dependent variable effective inventory management. The tested hypothesised model provides a framework for further testing in future ACM inventory management studies in other countries. Business managers and inventory management staff of global ACMs can use it as a guide for effective inventory management; on which specific inventory management decisions to always pay attention to and, which inventory management decisions to pay attention to when a long-lasting pandemic occurs such as Covid-19. It is recommended that regardless of the Covid-19 pandemic, inventory managers in ACMs in South Africa should consider inventory forecasting management methods such as demand forecasting, determining the economic order quantity (EOQ) for all inventory item orders and materials requirement planning (MRP). They should also use an inventory information sharing system and inventory replenishment procedure to ensure inventory is managed effectively. During a prolonged pandemic such as Covid-19, inventory managers in ACMs in South Africa should pay particular attention to inventory resource management specifically regarding re-order inventory levels and classifying all inventory items according to the importance of using ABC analysis. This study investigated some of the key factors that influence employee engagement with a focus on the impact of departmental culture, two-way communication, leadership, recognition, and training development. For the purposes of this study, the moderating variable was employee’s attitude which ultimately may influence the level of engagement that employees have. To answer the research questions, a quantitative approach was selected for the purposes of this research. This is more especially as quantitative research is ideal to find statistical relationships between variables and outcomes Quantitative research will therefore be used to determine the relationships between the variables under study. A convenience sampling method was chosen for this study. Research instruments adopted for the study were extracted from several articles which adopted similar constructs. These research instruments were then contextualised for the purposes of understanding the factors that influence employee engagement within an FMCG environment. The researcher ensured that all research instruments adopted for the study, were validated, and have a Cronbach-alpha score of more than 0.7 which is an ideal unit of measure for research-instruments internal consistency. The main goal of the research was to critically analyse the scope and effect of sections 20, 20A, and 103(2) and 102(4), and sections 80A to 80L of the Income Tax Act, dealing with assessed losses, together with the interpretation by the courts. The research was situated within the interpretative paradigm, adopted a qualitative approach, with a doctrinal methodology. As the research was carried out using only publicly available documents, no ethical considerations applied. In addressing the goal of the research, the thesis first discussed the concept of tax avoidance and its consequences. The two main interpretative approaches adopted by the courts, including with regard to tax provisions – the strict literal and the purposive approaches – were described. The thesis then proceeded to analyse sections 20, 20A, 103(2) and 103(4), and sections 80A to 80L, together with the relevant case law, and in the case of sections 80A to 80L, with the use of a hypothetical example, to illustrate the application of the sections. In addressing the goal of the research, the thesis first discussed the concept of tax avoidance and its consequences. The two main interpretative approaches adopted by the courts, including with regard to tax provisions – the strict literal and the purposive approaches – were described. The thesis then proceeded to analyse sections 20, 20A, 103(2) and 103(4), and sections 80A to 80L, together with the relevant case law, and in the case of sections 80A to 80L, with the use of a hypothetical example, to illustrate the application of the sections. The conclusion arrived at was that the sections discussed in the thesis are adequate to address the problem of the misuse of assessed losses to avoid tax. , Thesis (MCom) -- Faculty of Commerce, Accounting, 2023

Invasive radiological procedures: patients’ satisfaction with radiographers’ care in public hospitals in Ghana and South Africa

- Description: There has been a steady increase in invasive radiological procedures throughout the world. The situation is no different in Ghana and South Africa where the governments have sought to increase the equipment available for such procedures in public hospitals. However, complaints by patients and radiographers at the two public hospitals in Ghana and South Africa suggested that not all patients are satisfied with the radiographers’ care provided during invasive radiological procedures. The study aimed to investigate patients’ satisfaction with radiographers’ care during invasive radiological procedures at two public hospitals in Ghana and South Africa, and thereafter to do a comparison of the two hospitals. The study utilised a quantitative, comparative descriptive design. The theoretical framework that guided this study was Cox’s Interaction Model of Client Health Behaviour. The research population consisted of participants who had undergone various invasive radiological procedures. The data were collected by means of a structured self-administered questionnaire. The reliability and validity of the data collection instrument was enhanced by conducting a pilot study as well as through peer review and the guidance of a statistician. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were undertaken and presented in the form of tables and graphs. The study was conducted in an ethical manner by adhering to the principles of beneficence, justice and respect for persons. Overall, there was greater patient satisfaction with radiographers’ care in Ghana than in South Africa. Regarding patient satisfaction and health information, a statistically significant difference was observed between both countries (t = 10.02, df = 218, p = 0.000 and d = 1.36). Concerning patient satisfaction and affective support, a statistically significant difference was observed with a medium effect size (t = -4.34, df = 22, p = 0.000, d = 0.59). Patient satisfaction and decisional control was shown to have a statistically significant difference between the two countries (t = 20.27, df = 218, p = 0.000 and d = 2.73). Regarding professional/technical competencies, a statistically significant difference was observed with large size effect between the two countries (t = -6.77, df = 22, p = 0.000 and d = 0.91). In conclusion, the two countries were shown to differ regarding patient satisfaction in relation to Cox’s domains of health information, decisional control, affective support v and professional/technical competencies. In Ghana, there was greater patient satisfaction in relation to health information and decisional control than in South Africa. Conversely, in South Africa patient satisfaction in relation to affective support and professional/technical competencies was higher than in Ghana. As such, patient satisfaction could be improved if radiography management seeks to find ways to address these aspects in the hospitals under study in Ghana and South Africa. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Health Sciences, 2022
