Description: Today’s teaching space is more diverse than before. As a result, differentiated instruction is considered helpful in supporting learner diversity. This teaching approach considers socio-cultural, multiple intelligences, and learning styles also termed learning preferences of learners. It is against this view that I wanted to investigate the implementation of differentiated instruction teaching practices in the Foundation Phase. This study explored differentiated teaching strategies and procedures in mathematics teaching, and I observed four Grade 3 teachers. The theoretical framework underlying this study was the theory of practice architectures. This study is located within an interpretivist paradigm within which I employed a case study research design. The collection of the data sets was through observations and semi-structured interviews. For an analysis of observations, I used a deductive approach. On the other hand, for the semi-structured interviews, I use an inductive approach to discover patterns and themes that I applied during the data analysis process. The validation process was done by giving interview transcripts and a summary of discussions to respondents to verify their responses and check for any misinterpretations. Rich data sets were analysed concerning the research questions, which were as follows: What are the current differentiated instruction teaching practices used by Grade 3 Mathematics teachers? How can the teachers’ differentiated instruction teaching practices be understood in terms of doings, sayings and relatings? How are differentiated instruction teaching practices made visible through the lens of the Theory of Practice Architecture? The findings from the study revealed that the use of learners’ everyday language influences their understanding of mathematics terminology. The study discovered that learners were more comfortable using English to make sense of mathematics terms instead of using isiXhosa, the Language of Learning and Teaching in the Foundation Phase. Additionally, linking learning to learners’ everyday English language enabled them to learn mathematics terms in a relaxed and non-threatening situation, while isiXhosa seemed to constrain learning. Further, the findings revealed that teachers were unclear about differentiated instruction. That was evident when they did not know the elements of differentiated instruction. Description: Background: South Africa is the second most influential exporter of citrus fruits internationally and holds a pivotal role in economic revenue for the country. Rural areas, such as the Sundays River Valley in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, contribute to the country’s citrus production. Many women depend on citrus packhouses for employment as citrus sorters. As humans perceive certain defects in citrus fruits more accurately than machines, these sorters must identify and manually remove any fruit that does not conform with export requirements. Citrus sorters are exposed to numerous physical and cognitive stressors during the task while faced with organizational challenges, such as shift work and long working hours. Therefore, the potential for fatigue development is anticipated. Given the multifactorial nature of fatigue and the negative consequences it may have on workers, it also has the potential to impede the accuracy of the sorting performance. Stringent disciplinary action for the entire South African citrus industry may be of consequence if nonconforming or pest-infested fruit is missed by citrus sorters and exported to foreign countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of fatigue among citrus sorters in a citrus packhouse in the Sundays River Valley of the Eastern Cape throughout a citrus harvesting season and to identify factors that may contribute towards fatigue development. Methods: The research design utilized a crosssectional, two-part approach that applied mixed methods. Part one was administered once-off, incorporating demographic, work-, and non-work-related questions. Part two was a self-developed repeated measures assessment comprising close-ended contextual questions, the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, and the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale. Environmental and work output data were also recorded. Results: Citrus sorters (n= 35) recorded a mean MFIS score of 39.35 throughout the harvest season, which was above the prescribed fatigue threshold (38). However, there was no significant difference in fatigue ratings over time (p= 0.122). Day shift workers exceeded the fatigue threshold for the entire season compared to night shift workers, who only exceeded it in the last two weeks. The physical, cognitive, and psychosocial subscales found no significant difference in fatigue scores, although physical fatigue recorded the highest scores across all weeks and displayed a significant difference over time. Overall, participants, on average, perceived to be “neither sleepy nor alert” over the season. However, eight participants (22%) recorded sleepiness scores ii exceeding the excessive sleepiness threshold of seven. Educational levels, health status, work-pace, and the number of family dependents significantly contributed to fatigue development, albeit a weak correlation. Discussion: Sorters were perceived to be fatigued from week three till the end of the study; however, there was no variation in fatigue scores over time. An accumulation of physical fatigue over time was revealed where prolonged standing, repetitive work, and irregular working postures may have contributed. Night shift workers did not receive the recommended hours of sleep (7-8 hours); hence, they registered greater sleepiness scores over the season than day shift workers. Environmental and work output recordings did not prove to have a significant influence on fatigue development, and neither did work experience or physical exercise. Conclusion: An amalgamation of numerous contributing factors within the work situation, private situation, and the individual influenced the development of fatigue, where there was no primary causal factor. Description: Poor water governance practices have been identified as one of the root causes of water problems confronting the South African water sector. This is evident in the lower section of the Upper Vaal River Catchment, where ineffective implementation of the regulatory measures has resulted in multiple incidents of illegal discharge of effluent from municipal wastewater treatment works, industrial and mining activities. Pollution and deterioration of water quality is a major challenge in the catchment; the Vaal River is severely polluted beyond acceptable standards and impacts negatively on other water users who have legitimate rights to the water resources. Pollution not only affects human activities and use, but also has negative impacts on ecological health and functionality. Poor water governance practices raise ethical implications for the rights to water for both social and ecological components. Although many water governance challenges in South Africa have implications that border on values and ethics, the relationship between these concepts has hardly been explored. In order to contribute towards filling this gap, this study explores water governance challenges and their ethical implications, and then analyse the equity dimensions of key water challenges among institutional actors in the lower section of the Upper Vaal WMA, Gauteng. The study uses a qualitative research approach which involves several methods of data collection: document analysis, workshops, focus group discussions, key informant interviews and participant observation. The data collected were analysed using thematic analysis, and then applied an ethical framework to distil ethical implications of the identified water governance challenges. There are five water governance challenges that were identified, which are i) failure in the implementation of water legislation and regulations, ii) ineffective leadership and management, iii) cooperative governance and poor accountability, iv) decentralisation and ineffective participation, and v) finance, infrastructure, and technical capacity. The deterioration of water quality and pollution due to ineffective implementation of the regulatory system has ethical implications towards protection of the ecological system and sustainable management of the water resources for the present and future generation. Ineffective implementation of the regulatory measure also raises the issue of distributive equity between different water users and between current and future users. These implications are critical particularly when viewed from the perspective of systemic-relational ethical approach which posit that in social-ecological systems, all components ought to be treated with equal regards, and their inherent worth respected in order to maintain the unity of the SES. The idea of equal regards to the inherent worth of the component implies due respect, in ways that do not undermine the integrity of the entire system. The challenges identified in the system suggest that i) the right of the ecological system to water is undermined due to anthropogenic activities, which may in the long term undermine the functionality of the entire SES; ii) the right of the margined to access to water of the right quality is also undermined, and pollution costs is externalised. These are matters of ethics that thus deserved attention in policy and management considerations. The study analysed equity dimensions (distributive and procedural), targeting the key institutional water users (i.e., mines, industries, agriculture, municipalities, and the wastewater treatment works) in the lower section of the Upper Vaal River Catchment as equity candidates due to their activities that significantly impact the environment and the water resources. The cost of pollution caused by mining activities, industrial activities and the wastewater treatment works is externalised to other users who are not responsible for the pollution. In this regard study identified key drivers that raise concerns linked to distributive equity, which are ) pollution and water quality deterioration, ii) the legacies of mining activities, and iii) poor infrastructure maintenance, vandalism, and theft. Identifying these key drivers of distributive equity concerns is critical in ensuring that the water governance processes are designed in a way that stakeholders and actors reliant on water resources within the catchment have equitable and fair access without the effects of externalised costs from other actors. The identified water governance challenges in the catchment all borders on ethics, thus an ethical framework is crucial in tackling water related problems. The principles of ethics can be used as guidelines to decision-making process for the management and governance of water resources in South Africa. With the use of the web, the development and maintenance of whatever web-related tools become inevitable, given the continuous changes in the web space. This continuous evolution of web development and maintenance will come with techniques, principles and standards which will not only enable faster development of web entities but also ensure that modern hardware, fulfilment of the requirements to use such hardware and modern concepts are incorporated into forming web tools that enable such progression. Furthermore, introducing the previously mentioned progress of the web becomes an essential part of its development and maintenance. This paper did implement the processes of progressing the web using the technique of documentation and version control systems. The web development for the COVIDRUG website was done for the Covidrug-Africa Consortium (COVIDRUG) using the Django webdevelopment framework. The RUBi website and the MDM-Task we band the Job Management System (JMS) web applications were maintained for the maintenance aspect. Archives brought value regarding the traceability it provides of the various web-related aspects. The development showed a website’s potential value, particularly for research groups. The maintenance carried out showed how different techniques and approaches could be used in different maintenance prospects to achieve set objectives. Description: Intro: Accidents are complex in nature with multiple contributing factors. The way in which accidents are investigated is important and using system-based analysis tools assists in understanding and mapping these contributing factors to learn from them. There has been an increase in the number of accidents that have occurred within the general aviation industry in South Africa and while accident investigations have been undertaken, these have not included the application of system-based analysis tools. This led to a collaboration between Rhodes University and the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of the South African Civil Aviation Authority where it was agreed that two systems-based analysis tools will be applied to a previously investigated accident that occurred in 2015. Aims: The first aim of this thesis was to identify if, through the implementation of these systems-based tools, the systemic contributory factors could be determined using the existing report by the AIID. The second aim of this thesis was to identify if, using the two systems-based tools, the actors and levels involved in the accident could be identified and the third aim was to identify if the implementation of these tools generates the same or different recommendations to that of the AIID. Methods: The two systems-based analysis tools applied were AcciMap and Causal Analysis using Systems Theory (CAST). These tools were applied to the V5-NRS Cessna 441 Conquest II accident report which captured the details of how the aircraft flew into the Tygerberg mountain on its descent into the Cape Town International Airport in August 2015. Results: Through the application of these two systems-based analysis tools the major contributing factors elucidated throughout this analysis were: visual and lighting conditions, pilot experience, training, lack of terrain warning equipment, fatigue, inadequate oversight, and inadequate risk management. In line with these findings, the analysis revealed various actors across various levels (the crew; South African Air Traffic Control, the SACAA, WestAir (the operator) and the Namibian Civil Aviation Authority Through the elucidation of these factors at various levels, 14 to 15 different recommendations were generated which was more than the one recommendation that was generated by the AIID. Discussion: Even when applied to an existing report, both the CAST and Accimap tools were able to bring to light the systemic contributing factors to this accident and importantly, highlight the role that various actors and levels within the system had in this unfortunate event. Consistent with previous literature, most of the contributing factors were found at the lowest level (the crew in this case) and fewer, but key factors were identified at higher levels (management and regulator level). Importantly, the application of the systems tools facilitated a systematic and systemic analysis of this accident, which allowed for the generation of recommendations at all levels, not just at the operator level. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the benefits and importance behind implementing a systems-based analysis method to an accident as these tools generate more useful recommendations which allows for important lessons to be learned following accidents, with the intention of re-designing systems to prevent them from happening again. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Human Kinetics and Ergonomics, 2023

Description: Difficulties arising from data scarcity, input data error or uncertainty, heterogeneous environments, lack of process understanding, and model structural uncertainty frequently constrain hydrological assessments of South African catchments. This research aimed to assess the usefulness of a “simpler” conceptual model for the conjunctive management of surface water and groundwater. The idea is that, to leverage the limited available data and information, a compromise between model complexity and data availability is required, which improves the use of models to produce reliable hydrological systems assessments. The research methodology focused on catchment-scale lake-groundwater dynamics to explore the limits of the groundwater components of the modified Pitman model (Hughes, 2004) in this type of environment, thus, determining the potential for using this model for integrated water assessments in South Africa. The Pitman model (Pitman, 1973; Hughes, 2013) is one of the most widely accepted models regarding surface water hydrology in South Africa; however, the newly incorporated groundwater components (Hughes, 2004) have not been applied as extensively as the surface water components. There remains uncertainty regarding their capability to adequately simulate groundwater processes and accurately represent surface and groundwater interactions in some environments. The model was assessed based on how well simulated water balance variables accurately reflected available evidence and expected catchment response (objective 1). Secondly, the research identified and addressed uncertainties as regards the structure and application of the model’s groundwater interaction components (objective 2). The model was set up for the Lake Sibaya catchment, which is a predominantly groundwater-driven system and, thus, provides an important opportunity to interrogate different aspects of uncertainty in both the conceptualizing and quantifying interaction processes. The study’s overall conclusion is that the model performed satisfactorily as it was able to simulate the lake’s water balance correctly enough such that the influences of dominating components were sensibly reflected in variations in streamflow and lake volumes. The following key findings were noted; (i) the lake volume shows a continuous decline, (ii) the lake volume decreased with increasing development (forestry and abstractions) in the lake catchment, (iii) there is significant rainfall uncertainty in the study area and the model showed high sensitivity to rainfall differences, (iv) robust conceptual knowledge of local catchment conditions was valuable for reducing some of the data related uncertainty in the study area and for producing realistic model simulations, (v) the Pitman model (Hughes, 2013) updated GW components can provide a valuable tool for modelling integrated hydrological processes; nevertheless, when applying the model to specific environments, implicit approaches may be necessary to account for processes that are not fully represented in the model. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Institute for Water Research, 2023

Description: Background: Population experts and policymakers are concerned about Nigeria's rapid annual population growth due to the country's high birth rate which was 5.3 births per woman in 2018. Fear of the side effects of modern contraceptives among Nigerian women contributes to the low rate of contraceptive use, which was reported to be 17% and 37% among married and sexually active unmarried women, respectively. Which is a significant cause of the high birth rate. Although the side effects of modern contraceptives on women's clinical and physiological variables are well known, studies examining the associations between contraceptive use and physical and psychosocial variables such as physical activity (PA), depression, and quality of life (QoL) in non-athletic Nigerian women of reproductive age are scarce. This study aimed to examine the associations between contraceptive use, PA, depression, and QoL among non-athletic women of childbearing age in Akure South Local Government, Ondo State, Nigeria. Methods: In a descriptive cross-sectional study, 646 women of childbearing age were recruited using the multistage sampling technique. The data of 496 current contraceptive users and 146 non-users were analysed, as 4 respondents did not respond regarding current contraceptive use status. The Global PA Questionnaire (GPAQ), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) and World Health QoL Organization Quality of Life Brief (WHOQoL BREF) were used to assess respondents’ scores/levels of PA, depression and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The GPAQ, BDI, and WHOQOL scores were compared between contraceptive users and non-users using non-parametric Quade Analysis of Covariance while age, married status, tribe, religion, and occupation were included covariates. PA, sedentary behaviour (SB), and BDI scores were categorized using guidelines. Contraceptive use/practice was the outcome variable. Pearson's chi-square test bivariate analysis and a multivariate logistic model were used to identify factors associated with contraceptive use (users and non-users). Crude and adjusted odds ratios and their confidence intervals were calculated to determine the significance of the association. The regression model was adjusted for age, marital status, religion, tribe, highest education level, occupation, awareness of contraceptives, current use, lifetime use, type, class, and duration of current contraception. “Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 29.73±6.10 years. The contraceptive users and non-users were not significantly different regarding their ages (p = 0.135), marital status (p = 0.245), highest education (p = 0.444), occupation (p = 0.238), and tribe (p = 0.192). The respondents’ lifetime and point prevalence of contraceptive uptake was 93.6% and 77.3%, respectively, while 72 (12.8%) reported experiencing contraception-related side effects. Of the 496 respondents who currently practice contraception, 146 (29.4%) were hormonal contraceptive users. The majority of the respondents had moderate and mild levels of PA (48.5%) and depression (51.4%), respectively, and a significantly higher proportion of contraceptive users had minimal and moderate depression levels than the non-users (p = 0.018). The contraceptive users demonstrated significantly higher median scores of BDI (p = 0.02), Physical health QoL (p < 0.001), environment QoL (p = 0.033) and overall QoL (0.004) than the non-users. Hormonal contraceptive users had significantly higher median PA walking/bicycling scores than non-hormonal users (p = 0.014). Respondents with mild and moderate depression levels had higher odds of being contraceptive users than those with minimal depression (AOR = 3.12, 95% CI = 1.43 – 6.80, p = 0.04 and 4.67, 95% CI = 1.92 – 11.36, p = 0.001 respectively). Conclusion: Contraceptive use is negatively associated with depression but positively related to Physical health, environment and overall domains of HRQoL. Description: The regulation of professionals who offer any type of service to the public is a critical intervention towards protecting the public from unscrupulous behaviour. The regulation of tax practitioners is no exception as it is a critical element in protecting the taxpaying public and the fiscus against improper conduct by tax practitioners, as well as preventing revenue leakages due to inaccurate or incorrect declarations made by taxpayers. A major contributor of regulation would be strengthening or improving compliance. This study analyses the frameworks that regulate tax practitioners in Zimbabwe and South Africa and evaluates them against best practice as is found in Germany. Germany has been regulating tax practitioners for 50 years and can rightly be recognised as best practice. This is achieved by reviewing and evaluating institutional and legislative mechanisms in the regulatory frameworks adopted in the three countries in order to identify possible areas of improvement in Zimbabwe and South Africa. The research is situated in the interpretative paradigm and the research methodology is qualitative in nature, involving the critical review of documentary data. The study concludes that both South Africa and Zimbabwe have room to improve in certain areas and makes recommendations aimed at strengthening their respective regulatory frameworks. Both South Africa and Zimbabwe could promulgate a law that deals exclusively with the regulation of tax practitioners, and institute an independent body that deals exclusively with tax practitioner related issues. In Zimbabwe, the Public Accountants and Auditors’ Board should be replaced with a body dedicated to serving tax practitioners. Informing the taxpaying public is important and, particularly in Zimbabwe, measures should be adopted to inform taxpayers about their rights and obligations, the role of tax practitioners, and the interface with the tax administration. Description: This thesis explores liberal and hybrid approaches to peacebuilding and their decisiveness in building sustainable peace in Sierra Leone. Contemporary peacebuilding interventions have been dominated by liberal peacebuilding, also known as liberal state-building. Post-conflict states have been transforming to replicate liberal states due to assumptions of liberal states being more peaceful and less likely to fall into conflict again than non-liberal states. There is growing criticism regarding the effectiveness of this approach as its initiatives have not always translated to sustainable peace. This failure is attributed to its minimal inclusion or exclusion of local actors in the peacebuilding process as well as its application of standardised approaches in complex contexts. In response to these shortfalls, international peacebuilding scholars propose an alternative approach that would combine the liberal and the local to produce a hybrid peace, which is inclusive and context-specific. This thesis tests the decisiveness of these approaches by examining the successful peacebuilding process in Sierra Leone. It then concludes that the peacebuilding interventions of Sierra Leone demonstrate how liberal peacebuilding initiatives have little or limited success when conducted without the inclusion of local actors. Description: Anthropogenic-induced climate change and exploitation pose threat to many marine fishes on which a vast majority of people around the world depend. Rapid changes in sea surface temperature have a direct impact on the physiology of ectothermic organisms such as fish, potentially resulting in changes to population distribution, abundance, and demographics. In the face of climate change, the impacts of increasing temperature variability on fish populations may be exacerbated by exploitation. Understanding how the resilience of exploited populations is affected by climate change is critical to predict how fishes will respond in the future. This study aimed to augment our knowledge on the impact of exploitation and thermal variability on fishes by comparing the thermal physiology of an exploited and unexploited population of the resident, reef-dwelling, Chrysoblephus laticeps. Twenty live fish were collected from the exploited, Cape St Francis and 18 fish from the unexploited, Goukamma Marine Protected Area and transported to the laboratory. The metabolic performance, in terms of standard metabolic rate (SMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and aerobic scope (AS) of individual C. laticeps were estimated repeatedly at 10 ℃, 16 °C and 21 °C. Linear mixed effects models were used to examine the relationship between temperature, population, and metabolic rate and a ‘cvequality’ test analysis was used to compare the variance structure of the metabolic rate regression model for each population. Overall, the findings of this study show that Chrysoblephus laticeps from the unexploited population maintains a significantly higher aerobic scope (AS) across all temperature treatments (10, 16 and 21 ℃) when compared with those from the exploited population. In addition, the maximum metabolic rate (MMR) of individuals from the unexploited population was significantly higher than that of individuals from the exploited population, but there was no evidence to suggest that variability was significantly different between the populations. On the other hand, the individuals from an exploited population had a significantly higher standard metabolic rate (SMR) at high temperatures of 21 ℃, while the unexploited population had a low SMR at these high temperatures, but a high SMR at 10 ℃. Despite these differences there was no significant variation in the SMR between the two populations. The findings of this study confirm previous work on different exploited and unexploited populations of C. laticeps and together these findings suggest that hook and line exploitation lead to reduced physiological phenotypic diversity and reduced physiological performance in exploited fish populations. These findings emphasise the importance of incorporating the iii physiological information to develop viable fisheries management tools in the context of climate change. This study also highlights the effectiveness of MPAs in conserving highperformance physiological phenotypes to maintain phenotypic diversity in fish populations. Future research should aim to evaluate the efficacy of existing MPAs in preserving the physiological diversity of important hook and line fisheries species, while fisheries managers should consider augmenting their approaches through the incorporation of well-designed MPA’s to promote physiological diversity. Description: Gut microbiota can have a profound influence on host performance, behaviour and fitness. For False Codling Moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a major pest of citrus in South Africa, little work has been undertaken to date on gut microbe diversity or its influence on the host. This thesis aimed to i) characterise the gut microbiome of FCM under laboratory conditions and in FCM from the field, ii) and produce moths with reduced gut microbiota through egg dechorionation, which was followed by iii) the measurement of a suite of physiological traits, namely mass, survival and thermal stress in FCM from normal laboratory, dechorionated laboratory and field collected larvae that may be indicative of overall field performance. We aimed to directly test the hypothesis that gut microbial diversity partly determines insect performance and fitness by measuring its effects on growth, development, and tolerance to cold temperatures in FCM. FCM eggs that underwent dechorionation with sodium hypochlorite had an overall effect on larval survival, egg morphology and both larval and adult moth physiological measures. Increasing concentrations of sodium hypochlorite significantly decreased insect survival, (𝜒2(1, n = 10 850) = 21.724, p-value < 0.0001), with a concentration of ≈3.69% as the concentration limit (p-value < 0.001). Successful dechorionation of FCM was achieved with a wash of sodium hypochlorite at around 3.69% concentration and was visually confirmed by reduction of FCM egg surface area, (𝜒2(25, n = 260) p-value < 0.0001) and Scanning Electron Micrographs of the egg morphology. The gut microbiome of FCM from the different focus treatments was successfully characterized. Identification of the dominant bacterial families in these microbiomes revealed Xanthobacteraceae, Beijerinckiaceae and Burkholderiaceae in both the laboratory reared and field collected larvae, which suggests their systematic association with T. leucotreta. The most abundant genera were revealed as Bradyrhizobium, Methylobacterium and Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia. Comparison of larval mass showed that treatment (dechorionated or not) had a significant effect on larval mass (𝜒2(2, n = 230) = 22.703, p-value < 0.001), field larvae were heavier than both control larvae and larvae with a disrupted gut microbiome. However, adult insects with a disrupted gut microbiome had more mass than individuals from the control and field-collected larvae with intact gut microbiomes (𝜒2(2, n = 230) = 39.074, p-value < 0.001). Despite the difference in mass between larval treatments, there was no significant difference in relative protein (𝜒2(2, n = 24) = 5.680, p-value = 0.06), carbohydrate (𝜒2(2, n = 24) = 3.940, p-value = 0.14) or lipid (𝜒2(2, n = 24) = 6.032, p-value = 0.05) content between individuals from the control and dechorionated treatments and field-collected individuals. Turning to thermal physiology, insects collected from the field took significantly longer to recover from chill coma than both laboratory treatments with intact and disrupted gut microbiomes (𝜒2(2, n = 129 = 39.659, p-value < 0.001). In addition, exposure to cold stress showed that treatment had a significant effect on insect mortality (𝜒2(2, n = 272) = 9.176, p-value = 0.01), with individuals from the control and dechorionated treatment being less likely to die after experiencing cold stress compared to field-collected individuals. Differences in the mass and thermal tolerance of insects with intact and disrupted gut microbiota suggest that gut microbiota may play an important role in the cold performance of T. leucotreta, and these findings constitute the basis for future molecular work on the functions of these bacterial taxa. Description: The Paleoproterozoic Kalahari manganese field (KMF) in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, hosts a large resource of manganese ores that has been of great interest over many decades. The Kalahari Manganese deposit (KMD), which is the largest of five erosional relics of the Hotazel Formation in the KMF, hosts three beds of Mn ores with alternating layers of banded iron formation (BIF) and hematite lutite. These three rock types are all evaluated for their mineralogy and geochemistry in this study, with emphasis on lateral and vertical distributions across the Gloria and Nchwaning Mines in the northernmost KMF, an area of high-grade, hydrothermally altered Mn mineralisation. The Mn ores of the Hotazel formation are traditionally categorised into two types. The carbonate-rich low Mn grade (Mn≤40 wt. %) ores (Mamatwan-type) domninates the largest part of the KMD, while carbonate-free, high Mn grade (Mn≥ 45 wt.%) ore (Wessels-type) occurs in the northernmost KMD. The Wessels-type ores are considered as the hydrothermally altered product of Mamatwan-type ores, and as indicated above, are the focus of this study. Five drill cores containing Wessels-type ores from the Nchwaning and Gloria area of the northern KMD were analysed to help understand the petrographic and particularly the geochemical variations in the Hotazel Fe-Mn Formation, both laterally for a given Mn layer of the three, and vertically across Mn layers as captured in specific drillcores. Petrographic and whole-rock geochemical results obtained from the three rock types of the Hotazel Formation show variations in their mineralogical and geochemical compositions, especially in the high-grade Mn ores themselves. Most of the samples of the BIFs layers are dominated by hematite and chert occurring in banded fashion, which is typical of a normal carbonate-free altered BIF discussed in this thesis. The BIFs can also be locally enriched in hematite (ferruginised), occurring as massive hematite ores usually at the top of the stratigraphic profiles. The presence of aegirine-rich assemblages is also noted occurring in some of the BIF and hematite lutite sections immediately above and below the Mn ore beds. The high-grade Mn ore beds vary greatly in mineralogy and texture of the ores laterally and even within a single drill core. In an extreme case, a single drillcore sampled from the Gloria mine (GL57) contains high-grade Wessels-type ore in the upper Mn bed and low-grade, Mamatwan-type ore in the lower Mn layer. Geochemically, the Mn ore bodies also show substantial geochemical variability, although a net increase in the Mn grade downward is usually characterised by a corresponding depletion in mainly bulk Ca, Si and carbonate. However, the Fe content appears to be consistently higher in the upper ore bodies of the drillcores than the lower ones, and the increase in the concentration of the Fe-oxide expectedly causes a relative decrease in the bulk Mn-oxide concentration, usually expressed as an antithetic relationship between the two elements. In terms of trace element distributions, this appears to be more significant in the Mn ores than the other two rock types affected by the same alteration process, probably due to the presence of Mn phases such as hausmannite and braunite serving as good hosts to several trace elements. Cu, Zn, Pb and to a lesser extent Mo are trace metals that appear to show elevated concentration levels (net enrichments) in high-grade Mn ore by comparison to the presumed Mamatwan-type protolith. Ba is an additional element of clear enrichment, manifested mainly as the mineral barite. The Northern KMD has a complex post-depositional history, which includes the intrusion of NE-SW-trending dykes, formation of the Mapedi/Gamagara erosional unconformity, normal faulting associated with the Wessels event and major thrust faults in the western part of the northern KMD. These structural events all have the potential to have contributed to the alteration and subsequent enrichment of the Mn ores in the Nchwaning and Gloria area. As such, the mineralogical, textural, and geochemical variations observed here can tentatively be attributed to the different structural features in the northern KMD. Classic interpretations suggest that normal N-S-trending fault structures have acted as fluid conduits for hydrothermal fluids, which led to the metasomatic alteration of the Mn ore body laterally. Drill cores proximal to and evidently affected by fault-controlled alteration in the SE and SW-portions of the Nchwaning area, have comparable mineralogical and geochemical characteristics for both ore bodies (upper and lower) with subdued alteration effects from the unconformed contact above. Fluids associated with the Mapedi/Gamagara unconformity, would have percolated down-stratigraphy causing oxidative ferruginisation, which led to the formation of massive hematite ores in the top BIF layers and ferruginised Mn ores in the Mn ore beds. This alteration effect appears more prominent in a drill core from the northern part of the study area where the unconformity contact appears more proximal to the upper Mn bed. Drill cores located in the western part of the Nchwaning area seem to also capture evidence of fluid alteration with enrichment in Na recorded in the local abundance of the mineral aegirine. Description: This study aimed to investigate the impact of disregarding ethical resources on company performance, with a particular focus on Carillion and Steinhoff as case studies. A pragmatist research philosophy was employed using a mixed methods approach, utilizing deductive inferencing to produce archival research. Data was collected from annual financial statements and existing literature on Steinhoff and Carillion's corporate failures. Both content analysis and statistical analysis were employed to analyse the data. The study found that both Carillion and Steinhoff were at the top of their respective industries when they began to underperform due to poor governance. On the part of Carillion, much of its failure can be attributed to aggressive bidding, while for Steinhoff, its failure was due to unscrupulous accounting practices. Corruption and fraud at the top echelon of each of these respective companies began to trickle down to the bottom of the hierarchy. Additionally, Steinhoff used a two-tier board system that promotes information asymmetry between a management board and a supervisory board. This gave Steinhoff’s management board leverage to manipulate company reports and hide information from the supervisory board. Steinhoff equally violated the board’s independence by making former management executives part of the supervisory board, who could potentially be lenient to the management board due to past relationships. This was further exacerbated by the CEO duality, which contributed to Steinhoff’s lack of board independence. Furthermore, Steinhoff’s board was reported to have served as board members for a long time, eventually leading them to create a group culture that negatively affected its board’s independence. Different from Steinhoff, which lacked board independence and board diversity, at face value, Carillion appeared to have a predominantly independent board with diverse experience and external commitments. However, Carillion also lacked board independence in a different way, as some of its board members were previously employed by KPMG. KPMG was also the external auditor of Carillion. This created a scenario where Carillion and KPMG were conniving, which may have affected the objectivity of the external audits on financial performance. Further to this, the CEO held outsized power over the board, which could have also resulted in a lack of independence. This, in turn, facilitated corrupt behaviour within the organisation, which may have contributed to its corporate failure. iv The findings of the study highlight the following three conclusions: i) profits that are premised on reckless, irregular, and fraudulent business and accounting practices are not sustainable; ii) governance structures that do not adhere to sound corporate governance principles result in impaired board independence and negatively affect firm performance; and iii) companies that reach the pinnacle of their success through unethical conduct are ultimately short-lived. , Thesis (MBA) -- Faculty of Commerce, Rhodes Business School, 2023

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent disruptions brought about by the implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions, provide an unfortunate but useful opportunity to explore employee wellness in response to a crisis, within the Higher Education context. COVID-19 lockdowns meant that university students could no longer access conventional learning through physical attendance at lectures. In response, university staff had to contend with a number of changes to their work environment. These included adapting teaching, learning, and assessment methods to an online platform, which led to changes in job roles, expectations, and increased workload for both academic and support staff. The focus of this research was to explore correlations between the current psychological distress that university employees are experiencing and their recalled coping strategies and sense of coherence in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A mixed-method approach using a survey design was used. Surveys were completed by 171 university academic and support staff using the SA CORE-10 and BRIEF Cope, as well as qualitative questions. Results demonstrated that higher levels of current psychological distress correlated positively with avoidant coping strategies, particularly in academic staff as opposed to support staff, while more adaptive coping strategies tracked with a sense of coherence. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Psychology, 2023

Description: The EPWP functions as a bridge between unemployment and entry into the labour market by providing work readiness skills training to its beneficiaries who receive below-market rate stipends for the short- term duration of their participation. The EPWP combines service delivery issues with social development objectives by promoting intensive manual labour in its projects. As a social protection strategy, public works programmes cater to those who do not meet the criteria to receive government social grants. As one of the programmes under the EPWP dealing with the control and eradication of invasive alien plants, the Working for Water (WfW) programme also uses intensive manual labour methods for clearing alien plant species. Although the clearing successes of WfW are well documented, the programme has focused little attention to the longer-term livelihood impacts of the temporary work and skills training provided to beneficiaries. This study suggests this could be due to a lack of the appropriate indicators to measure these outcomes. Therefore, an evaluation framework for environmental public works projects is proposed, which consists of outcome indicators to track the livelihood impact of the work experience and skills training on the beneficiaries post-participation, since the aim of these EPWP interventions is to improve beneficiaries’ labour market outcomes. The Northern Cape province’s Prosopis mesquite clearing project was used as the case study to develop and test the evaluation framework. The outcome indicators were informed by the key stakeholders’ interviews and the beneficiaries’ survey, specifically since the beneficiaries were well placed to give feedback on the benefits of the work experience and training post-participation. The combined strengths of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach and the Capability Approach were useful for formulating the outcomes indicators, while the indicators for the inputs, activities and outputs were formulated from the key stakeholder interviews and online EPWP reports. A mixed methods approach was used and primary data were collected through key stakeholder interviews with the Prosopis mesquite clearing project managers and an online survey with some of the beneficiaries. Online EPWP reports and records obtained from WfW were used as secondary data. Data analysis used RStudio, Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism. The data analysis and evaluation framework indicators constituted the results section and aimed to highlight the factors that managers should focus on to achieve the desired livelihood outcomes. The proposed outcome indicators can be used to gauge the effectiveness of environmental public works’ social development interventions. The results revealed that the project budget fluctuations resulted in the Working for Water managers adopting a myopic view in administering the workdays and skills training, which diminished the livelihood impact of the Prosopis mesquite clearing project to merely a ‘make work’ project with no observable longer-term livelihood benefits. The selection input indicators and their utilisation during project activities needs to be better aligned with the desired longer-term livelihood outcomes that these environmental public works projects seek to achieve, mainly that of preparing beneficiaries for jobs in the labour market. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Commerce, Economics and Economic History, 2023
