Appropriate integration of workers with physical limitations into a manual workplace – development of an assessment tool

In light of this, placement decisions of impaired workers should be based on detailed information of the nature of the jobs available, as well as individual capabilities of the worker. An ergonomics approach to design attempts to achieve an appropriate balance between the capabilities of the worker and the requirements of the task and uses this balance to improve productivity and encourage physical and mental well-being, job satisfaction and safety. A specific analysis tool which can be applied to various workplaces and jobs, and provide information for decisions regarding placement of physically limited workers, will help to increase the percentage of correct placement in an appropriate workplace, resulting in optimum productivity and worker safety. Methods: An assessment tool which allows matching of job requirements and worker capabilities was developed based on a theoretical framework from Mattison and Goebel (2007), as well as principles defined by Almgren and Schaurig (2012) and Demura and Nakada (2010). The tool assesses range of motion, force and time components of the physical requirements of different tasks involved in the job, as well as movement capabilities and limitations of the worker. The tool was pilot tested in a case study with an above the knee amputee working at a research facility. Results: The tool successfully provided information regarding the matching of the work to the identified job. The output of the tool highlighted two tasks which would place the worker at risk due to physical requirements of the tasks being greater than movement capabilities of the worker. These tasks need to be further investigated to determine if accommodations can be made to assist the worker in safely performing the task, or if the job is not suitable for the worker. Conclusions: The tool developed was useful in providing information to inform appropriate placement of the physically limited worker. Further research needs to be done to validate and determine reliability of the tool.

- Description: Evapotranspiration as a major component of the water balance has been identified as a key factor in hydrological modelling. Water management can be improved by means of increased use of reliable methods for estimating evapotranspiration. The limited availability of measured climate and discharge data sets, particularly in the developing world, restricts the reliability of hydrological models in these regions. Furthermore, rapid changes in hydrological systems with increasing development mean uncertainties in water resource estimation are growing. These changes are related to the modification of catchment hydrological processes with increasing human activity. Dealing with data uncertainty and quantifying the impacts of catchment activities are significant challenges that scientists in the field of hydrology face today. Uncertainties in hydrometeorological data are associated with poor observation networks that provide data at point scales which are not adequately representative of the inherent heterogeneity within catchment processes. Using uncertain data in model applications reduces the predictive power of hydrological models as well as the ability to validate the model outcomes. This study examines the potential of using remote sensing-based evapotranspiration data to reduce uncertainty in the climatic forcing data and constraining the output of a rainfall-runoff hydrological model. It is common to use fixed seasonally variable potential evapotranspiration (PET) instead of temporally varying PET data as inputs to standard rainfall-runoff models. Part of the reason is that there are relatively few stations available to measure a variety of meteorological input data needed to compute PET, as well as the apparent lack of sensitivity of rainfall-runoff models to different types of PET inputs. As hydrometeorological data become more readily available through the use of earth observation systems, it is important to determine whether rainfall-runoff models are sensitive to time-varying PET derived from these earth observations systems. Further potential includes the use of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) from this type of data to constrain model outputs and improve model realism. It is assumed that a better representation of evapotranspiration demands could improve the efficiency of models, and this study explores some of these issues. The study used evapotranspiration estimates (PET and ETa) from the MOD16 global product with one of the most widely used hydrological models in South Africa. The investigation included applying the Pitman model in a number of case study catchments located in different climatic regions of the country. The main objectives of the study included (i) the establishment of behavioural model parameter sets that generate acceptable hydrological response under both naturalised and present-day conditions, (ii) the use of time-varying PET estimates derived from MOD16 data to force the model, and (iii) the use of MOD16 ETa estimates to constrain model-simulated ETa. Before examining the use of different PET forcing data in the model, a two-step modelling approached was employed both a single-run and an uncertainty version of the Pitman model. During the first step (using a single-run version), available information on catchment physical properties and regionalised groundwater recharge together with model calibration principles were used to develop model functionality understanding and establish initial parameter sets. The outcomes from the first step were used to define uncertain parameter ranges for the use in the uncertainty version of the Pitman model (second step). Further, catchment water uses were quantified to ensure comparability with present-day flow conditions represented by the stream flow records. The effects of forcing the Pitman model with MOD16-based time-varying PET data inputs were evaluated using static and dynamic sensitivity analysis approaches. In the static approach, parameter sets calibrated using fixed seasonal distributions of PET data remain unchanged when forcing the model with other forms of PET, whereas in the dynamic method, the model is recalibrated with changing PET inputs. In both approaches, model sensitivity was assessed by comparing objective function statistics of reference flow simulations with those simulations incorporating changing PET data inputs. The use of the MOD16 ETa data to constrain model- simulated evapotranspiration losses was conducted by calibrating the parameters such that the simulated-ETa matched the evapotranspiration loss estimated from the MOD16 data. Despite issues around model equifinality and significant uncertainty within water use information, the Pitman model simulations were generally satisfactory and compared with observed stream flow data where available. The use of time-varying PET data does not improve the efficiency of the model when both static and dynamic sensitivity approaches are used. This was highly expected with the static approach where fixed model parameter sets do not account for the changes in evapotranspiration demands. However, with the dynamic approach, it was difficult to conclude why the model efficiency did not improve given the flexibility of the model to achieve appropriate parameter sets to different forms of PET. The study noted that the insensitivity of the model to changes in PET demands could be due to uncertainties in the model structure and MOD16 data. Attempts to constrain the model-simulated actual evapotranspiration with MOD16 ETa estimates were hampered by large errors in the MOD16 data and resulted in the non-closure of the catchment annual water balance, even when likely errors in the other components of the water balance were accounted for. There is still a great deal of work that needs to be done to reduce uncertainties associated with the use of earth observation data in hydrological modelling. This study has identified some of the specific gaps within the application of evapotranspiration data from earth observation information. While the MOD16 data applied with the Pitman model did not achieve improved simulations, the study has demonstrated the enormous potential of the data product in the future should the identified uncertainties be resolved. Lastly, the investigation highlighted some of the possible model structural uncertainties specifically associated with the simplified soil-moisture accounting routines within the model. It is possible that amending the model structure through investigating the dynamics of the relationship between soil moisture and evapotranspiration losses would assist in the improved utilisation of earth observation products related to the MOD16 ET data.

Assessing monitoring and evaluation as the control measure to enhance organisational performance with the reference to the Eastern Cape provincial treasury

- Description: The growing demand for governments and organisations to demonstrate principles of accountability, transparency and participatory decision making, which are the cornerstones of good governance, has fostered renewed efforts to transform the public service to ultimately produce tangible results and meet the needs of the beneficiaries of service delivery. Effective performance management practised across the entire organization in an integrated, iterative and sustained way that can help public service organizations overcome the challenges and deliver more with less. This study focuses on the assessment of monitoring and evaluation as the control measure to enhance organisational performance with the reference to the Eastern Cape Provincial Treasury and assess critical role in supporting performance management and also provides methodological options to support performance management. Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) are management activities that are necessary to ensure the achievement of policy goals in the form of concrete results. The study revealed that the current M and E system is not effective in that there are no clearly defined standards of what a quarterly progress report entail, especially the portfolio of evidence and because the main problem stems from the definition of what constitutes departmental performance. In determining what needs to be done, the effectiveness suffers since we opt for mainly indicators that are “safe”, that the department are sure they can achieve and not necessarily those that will enhance organizational performance. The study revealed that each programme manager should monitor and evaluate his/her processes on a continuous basis without having to wait for M&E unit. M&E unit will then provide an objective evaluation of the process already in place and constant engagement between M&E unit and line management, feedback sessions between staff and M&E unit are essential about the achievement of targets as outlined in the APP and Operational Plan. The study further revealed that there should be continuous meetings to discuss how directorates should sufficiently report on their quarterly targets to avoid inadequate reported information and the department must go step by step in performing activities towards achieving a set vision and on way to the vision, not forgetting to take away risks that may take us to another direction that was not intended as per our vision. The study thus recommends that, inter alia, the department must introduce strong mechanisms to deal with non-implementation of corrective measures regarding under performance and the poor quality of information provided in performance reports related to the performance indicators in the Annual Performance Plans.The introduction of an early warning sign system to warn all programmes when the performance of their planned indicators are not be achieved. The Top Management should continue to use the performance management information as the tool to improve the organisational performance by linking and aligning individual, team and organisational objectives and results, it also provides a means to recognise and reward good performance and to manage under-performance. However the Top Management should be able to conduct in-depth analysis into underperformance to detect whether the underperformance is related to the bad crafting of the indicators or if it relates to the work not done. The department should invest money on training of officials in M&E because it plays a critical role supporting performance management at various levels, in that it contributes to a thinking that is results oriented and also provides methodological options to support performance management. This means that all officials must be capacitated to manage M&E systems in the department that will ensure the production of accurate, objective and reliable information. The M&E unit in the department must facilitate such skills development and provide reasonable technical support where required. The training could be designed to instill a deeper understanding and knowledge of the concepts of M&E and their correct application in order to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations which could hinder the achievement of the desired results.

- Description: The growing demand for governments and organisations to demonstrate principles of accountability, transparency and participatory decision making, which are the cornerstones of good governance, has fostered renewed efforts to transform the public service to ultimately produce tangible results and meet the needs of the beneficiaries of service delivery. Effective performance management practised across the entire organization in an integrated, iterative and sustained way that can help public service organizations overcome the challenges and deliver more with less. This study focuses on the assessment of monitoring and evaluation as the control measure to enhance organisational performance with the reference to the Eastern Cape Provincial Treasury and assess critical role in supporting performance management and also provides methodological options to support performance management. Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) are management activities that are necessary to ensure the achievement of policy goals in the form of concrete results. The study revealed that the current M and E system is not effective in that there are no clearly defined standards of what a quarterly progress report entail, especially the portfolio of evidence and because the main problem stems from the definition of what constitutes departmental performance. In determining what needs to be done, the effectiveness suffers since we opt for mainly indicators that are “safe”, that the department are sure they can achieve and not necessarily those that will enhance organizational performance. The study revealed that each programme manager should monitor and evaluate his/her processes on a continuous basis without having to wait for M&E unit. M&E unit will then provide an objective evaluation of the process already in place and constant engagement between M&E unit and line management, feedback sessions between staff and M&E unit are essential about the achievement of targets as outlined in the APP and Operational Plan. The study further revealed that there should be continuous meetings to discuss how directorates should sufficiently report on their quarterly targets to avoid inadequate reported information and the department must go step by step in performing activities towards achieving a set vision and on way to the vision, not forgetting to take away risks that may take us to another direction that was not intended as per our vision. The study thus recommends that, inter alia, the department must introduce strong mechanisms to deal with non-implementation of corrective measures regarding under performance and the poor quality of information provided in performance reports related to the performance indicators in the Annual Performance Plans.The introduction of an early warning sign system to warn all programmes when the performance of their planned indicators are not be achieved. The Top Management should continue to use the performance management information as the tool to improve the organisational performance by linking and aligning individual, team and organisational objectives and results, it also provides a means to recognise and reward good performance and to manage under-performance. However the Top Management should be able to conduct in-depth analysis into underperformance to detect whether the underperformance is related to the bad crafting of the indicators or if it relates to the work not done. The department should invest money on training of officials in M&E because it plays a critical role supporting performance management at various levels, in that it contributes to a thinking that is results oriented and also provides methodological options to support performance management. This means that all officials must be capacitated to manage M&E systems in the department that will ensure the production of accurate, objective and reliable information. The M&E unit in the department must facilitate such skills development and provide reasonable technical support where required. The training could be designed to instill a deeper understanding and knowledge of the concepts of M&E and their correct application in order to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations which could hinder the achievement of the desired results.

Urban green spaces provide a number of ecosystem services which are beneficial to urban residents. This study sought to determine residents’ use and perception of urban green spaces in Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, and to quantify and value four selected ecosystem services, i.e. carbon sequestration by urban trees, urban heat island amelioration, spiritual services and firewood provision. All ecosystem services were valued using local a variety of direct or substitutive methods. Questionnaires were administered at green spaces to green space users to capture responses on reasons why they use green spaces and their perception of green spaces. Residents’ responses showed that they appreciate green spaces as multidimensional spaces which provide a number of benefits for cultural and provisioning services. The role of the green spaces in providing regulating services was not well appreciated by the residents as they did not directly experience these benefits. An association was revealed between primary purpose of visit to urban green spaces and household income. Residents in areas of medium and high density housing visited green spaces on a daily basis, whereas those in more affluent, low density housing areas visited green spaces less often, i.e. a few times a month Carbon sequestration rate was determined by measuring tree diameter within one year to determine increase in carbon sequestered. Bulawayo’s urban green spaces sequester 3 290 t/C/yr valued at approximately $13 000/yr. There was a significant difference in carbon sequestration by urban trees between formal and informal green spaces with formal green spaces sequestering more carbon. Indigenous trees were shown to sequester more carbon than exotic trees and trees with bigger stem diameter were determined sequester more carbon than trees with small diameter. The effect of urban green spaces on ambient temperature was determined by measuring ambient air temperature in green spaces and built up areas over six months. Urban green spaces in Bulawayo play a role in urban micro-climate regulation by reducing the ambient temperature in the green spaces as well as is built up areas. The mean difference between green spaces and surrounding urban areas was up to 60C, with larger green spaces generally showing larger differences. The green spaces extend their cooling effect to surrounding areas thus reducing the temperatures in surrounding residential areas thus reducing the energy demand used for indoor cooling. To determine why residents worship in green spaces, questionnaires were administered to congregation members to capture reasons why and how often they worship in green spaces, challenges faced by the congregants as well as assistance that can be given by the Bulawayo city council to improve the outdoor worship experience. Green spaces offer ideal places for worship in natural areas for congregants to be in touch with nature. The green spaces are also used by some congregations who ordinarily would worship in buildings but fail to do so due to lack of funds for rent or to purchase or construct a church building to use. The value of Bulawayo’s green spaces spiritual services was determined to be $92.50/ha/yr. In turbulently and unpredictable global environments, the capability of the organisation to continuously innovate is a key contributor to sustained competitiveness. Innovation capability focuses on making certain that the organisation possess appropriate strategies, structures, culture, leadership techniques and resourcing strategies to bolster effective execution of innovation activities. Innovation can only occur if the organisation has developed innovation capabilities. A number of South African SMEs continue to be reluctant to innovate and trade beyond the borders of their inherent country due to the risks which this involves. SMEs with sound innovation capabilities can make a significant contribution to a nation's competitiveness. Therefore investment in understanding an organisations innovation capabilities and the factors that contribute to successful innovation is necessary. This study assessed the innovation capabilities of South Africa SMEs and their ability to pursue export opportunities. The intention was to gain understanding on how innovation can be used by South African SMEs to improve exports opportunities. The findings revealed that only two thirds of the South African SMEs possess innovative capabilities. The observation was made that some SMEs believe that they are innovative even though they do not have innovative capabilities. Factors that contribute to improved export includes the ability to negotiate export transaction with international partners, the ability to adapt to changing export markets and the ability to meet export demands. These findings present an opportunity for SMEs to continuously assess their innovation capabilities and put measures in place to improve their innovation output and frequency. Globalisation threatens the former safe markets for local businesses, therefore for SMEs to be sustainable, grow and be competitive they should focus on creating innovative products that are marketable globally and continuously seek new markets.

- Description: This research seeks to evaluate the organisational maturity of Rhodes Music Radio as it relates to its use of social media. The research takes place within the context of Rhodes Music Radio (RMR) which is a community radio station operating in Grahamstown, South Africa. The station serves the Grahamstown community as a whole, with core listenership coming from the Rhodes University population. RMR has its base on the Rhodes University campus. The contribution of this study is the development of a Social Media Maturity Model which was used to assess the organisational maturity of Rhodes Music Radio with respect to its use of social media. As with other media organisations around the world, social media has become a major factor within the normal operations and functions of RMR. There is much research that has been done about the use of social media as a tool for marketing and branding in business. This tends to be the typical focus of research efforts. Though RMR makes use of social media as a marketing tool, media organisations have gone beyond this one dimensional approach in using social media. Social networking online has become a source of news and trends for organisations within the media space. For an organisation like RMR, social media is used in some way by departments such as Communication, Marketing and Branding, Production, Programming, Music, Technical; together with the presenters and producers who are hosting shows on a daily basis. Bearing the above in mind, this study aims to assess the level of maturity that RMR has as an organisation with use of social media. The goal is to find out how integrated and what systems the station has as a whole to make effective use of social media across the various departments which then helps to make a judgement on the station as a whole. This research has its literature base in the knowledge area of change management and operational excellence. Organisational maturity exists within the broad knowledge area of change management. It provides the theoretical basis upon which to gauge the maturity of RMR in relation to its social media use. Operational excellence provides a basis upon which to judge the quality of RMR’s product which speaks to how well integrated and effective the station is with its use of social media. The method of research was an evaluation that used 2 types of data, making use of both document analysis and interviews as sources of information. This information is then analysed using the Social Media Maturity Model developed specifically for this research from similar organisational maturity models used in other industries such as general management and supply chain management. This model assesses the maturity of the station by first assessing the maturity of the various departments that make up the operations of RMR and then comes up with an aggregate maturity level for the whole organisation. The conclusion of this study is that Rhodes Music Radio is quite mature in terms of its social media use but not yet fully networked. According to the model, the station is described as having a “Community” or “Linked” social media use. On the model, this is Stage 3 out of 5 in terms of maturity. Recommendations given to RMR to further increase this maturity level are for staff members more involved in the social media of the station by following the various RMR accounts and engaging with listeners and other staff members on these platforms. RMR staff need to be trained on the importance of social media and how to use it. The station needs to find a way to convert its social media following into listeners of its broadcast programming. Finally, the station needs to finalise and endorse its Social Media Policy.

Assessing the outcomes and consequences of large carnivore reintroductions to the Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Reintroduction is a potentially powerful tool available to conservationists to cope with species population declines. Nonetheless, it is poorly understood and past reviews tend to indicate poor results. Reintroduction, under the sensu stricto IUCN definition, must have a primary objective of conservation; however species can be released to sites in their indigenous range (reintroduction sensu lato) to meet other objectives. The outcomes of these reintroductions s.l need to be assessed to determine how effectively they achieve their varied objectives. A Web of Science review revealed that only 32.1% of 131 publications on reintroduction provided clearly defined success criteria. Using economic, ecological, conservation and problem animal management objectives as reintroduction s.l. drivers, I developed context-dependent success definitions for each objective to use in reintroduction outcome assessments. These success criteria were then used to assess the reintroductions s.l. of large carnivores, namely lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, spotted hyaena, and brown hyaena, to 16 private- and state-owned reserves in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Ecotourism and ecological restoration were the most common objectives for the reintroduction of top predators to these reserves. Overall the reintroductions of large carnivores have been successful in meeting their objectives. Only African wild dogs have failed to establish in the province. Causes of objective-specific failures for the other species in some reserves included introductions of same-sex populations, lack of breeding events and changes in reserve management objectives. Assessments for leopard and brown hyaena were inconclusive due to lack of monitoring data. The reintroduction of large carnivores to the Eastern Cape Province has also resulted in the emergence of human-carnivore conflict on neighbouring properties. Carnivores have reportedly escaped from 8 reserves (61.5% of reserves) in the Eastern Cape. A total of 75 conflict events on 68 neighbouring properties (36.7% of neighbouring properties) have been reported. There is a major gap in research around conflict resulting from carnivore reintroductions and future research is required to fully understand the situation in the province in order to develop effective mitigation methods. An adaptive management approach to reintroductions is encouraged to improve monitoring and ensure reintroductions continue to meet their objectives. Furthermore, emerging consequences, such as human-wildlife conflict, and related mitigation strategies should be incorporated into management of reintroduced populations. Communities surrounding reintroduction sites should be educated on lifting baselines where conflict-causing species are recovering to ensure continued success of reintroduction undertakings. National management plans should be developed for all large carnivore species to improve the conservation value of small, fenced reserves that are typical of South African conservation, through a managed metapopulation approach. Management plans should include social, political, and economic factors that can influence the success of reintroductions and ultimate conservation outcomes.

- Description: Reintroduction is a potentially powerful tool available to conservationists to cope with species population declines. Nonetheless, it is poorly understood and past reviews tend to indicate poor results. Reintroduction, under the sensu stricto IUCN definition, must have a primary objective of conservation; however species can be released to sites in their indigenous range (reintroduction sensu lato) to meet other objectives. The outcomes of these reintroductions s.l need to be assessed to determine how effectively they achieve their varied objectives. A Web of Science review revealed that only 32.1% of 131 publications on reintroduction provided clearly defined success criteria. Using economic, ecological, conservation and problem animal management objectives as reintroduction s.l. drivers, I developed context-dependent success definitions for each objective to use in reintroduction outcome assessments. These success criteria were then used to assess the reintroductions s.l. of large carnivores, namely lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, spotted hyaena, and brown hyaena, to 16 private- and state-owned reserves in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Ecotourism and ecological restoration were the most common objectives for the reintroduction of top predators to these reserves. Overall the reintroductions of large carnivores have been successful in meeting their objectives. Only African wild dogs have failed to establish in the province. Causes of objective-specific failures for the other species in some reserves included introductions of same-sex populations, lack of breeding events and changes in reserve management objectives. Assessments for leopard and brown hyaena were inconclusive due to lack of monitoring data. The reintroduction of large carnivores to the Eastern Cape Province has also resulted in the emergence of human-carnivore conflict on neighbouring properties. Carnivores have reportedly escaped from 8 reserves (61.5% of reserves) in the Eastern Cape. A total of 75 conflict events on 68 neighbouring properties (36.7% of neighbouring properties) have been reported. There is a major gap in research around conflict resulting from carnivore reintroductions and future research is required to fully understand the situation in the province in order to develop effective mitigation methods. An adaptive management approach to reintroductions is encouraged to improve monitoring and ensure reintroductions continue to meet their objectives. Furthermore, emerging consequences, such as human-wildlife conflict, and related mitigation strategies should be incorporated into management of reintroduced populations. Communities surrounding reintroduction sites should be educated on lifting baselines where conflict-causing species are recovering to ensure continued success of reintroduction undertakings. Assessing the physical fitness level of children with intellectual disability in the Grahamstown region of the Eastern Cape, and subsequently designing, implementing and evaluating the efficacy of an exercise intervention

Implementing a solution to this problem was seen to be a challenge, due to the lack of informative research and available data. Aims: The purpose of this research was two-fold; firstly, it aimed to identify the physical fitness levels of the intellectually disabled children in the Grahamstown region of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa; and secondly, it aimed to implement and evaluate the efficacy of an exercise intervention programme on physical fitness in a local school for children with intellectual disability. Phase 1: The descriptive study compared basic anthropometric as well as physical fitness measures from a sample of participants with intellectual disability (n=29) with a comparable sample of typically developed children (n=25). There were 15 males and 14 females in the intellectually disabled sample group, with an average age of 10.69 ± 1.26 years, and the typically developed sample had 13 males and 12 females, with an average age of 10.51 ± 0.74 years. The anthropometric measures included stature and mass; while the health-related physical fitness components included cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, strength, body composition, and flexibility; and the skill-related physical fitness components were balance, agility, speed, power, coordination and reaction time. The results revealed that the children with intellectual disability were significantly shorter in stature and lighter in mass (p <0.001) compared to their typically developed peers. Muscular endurance and strength, balance, speed, power, coordination and reaction time were poorer among those with intellectual disabilities (p <0.05). Cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility and agility were similar between groups. Results of the correlation analyses determined significant (p <0.05) relationships between certain health-related and/or skill-related physical fitness components, which were instrumental for selecting measures for Phase 2. The physical fitness components that had the most significant (p <0.05) correlations were speed with five significant correlations, both muscular endurance and balance with six, coordination with seven, and power with eight significant correlations of the eleven physical fitness components. The comparative results, in conjunction with the correlations, determined that the most suitable physical fitness components to be implemented in the exercise intervention for Phase 2 were muscular endurance, balance, and power. Phase 2: The intervention study was a case-control study (intervention group: n = 16; control group: n = 15), whereby the intervention group was exposed to an 8-week multi-modal exercise intervention training muscular endurance, balance and power. Pre-and post-intervention measures were performed using the same eleven physical fitness tests as in Phase 1. The interaction effects and effect sizes were determined and the results showed significant improvements and large effect sizes for the intervention group’s performance of muscular endurance (p=0.026; d=0.617) and power (p<0.000; d=0.999), whereas no significant changes were found for balance. Furthermore, the exercise intervention also impacted the overall level of physical fitness, as significant changes were found for cardiorespiratory endurance (p<0.001; d=0.98), strength (p=0.021; d=0.654) and flexibility (p=0.032; d=586). In conclusion, the exercise intervention was effective for improving the intellectually disabled participants’ muscular endurance and power but not found effective for balance.

- Description: Rapid, anthropogenic climate change is a contemporary phenomenon which is threatening natural ecosystems. Mountains are globally important, housing high levels of plant and animal biodiversity, as well as being important suppliers of water with 50% of mountainous regions being essential for the provision of water to downstream inhabitants. Owing to their importance, an assessment of the historical, current and potential impacts of climate change on the south-eastern Great Escarpment encompassing South Africa and Lesotho is necessary and is the primary aim of this thesis. In order to assess the historical and current impacts of climate change, historical rainfall records were collected from 78 sites throughout the Eastern Cape. These records were used to determine rainfall trends and trends in the frequency of daily extreme events. Climate change projections predict increasing trends in summer and annual rainfall, and a marginal increase to a slightly decreasing trend in winter rainfall, depending on if statistically downscaled or dynamically downscaled projections are examined. Extreme events are also predicted to increase in frequency. Results showed trends which generally agree with the predictions, except for extreme events for which there was insufficient data to support the projections. This has implications for farmers in the area and validates the downscaled Regional Climate Models (RCMs) to be used for the predictive analysis determining the potential future impacts of climate change on plant species' distributions in the south-eastern Great Escarpment. In order to assess montane plant species to future climate predictions, occurrence records of 46 species were correlated to rainfall and temperature predictor variables and predictions for species richness and beta diversity were made for current and future climates. This predictive analysis used and compared two correlative species distribution modelling methods - one method used one correlating algorithm in a nuanced manner and the other method used five correlating algorithms in an ensemble. A trend of range restriction to higher elevations for the 46 species analysed was as expected from a warming climate. The nuanced, single algorithm modelling method produced less conservative models. The predicted trend of an elevational increase in montane vegetation in this region points to Lesotho and the Drakensberg highlands as being an important refugium for montane plant taxa of the southeastern Great Escarpment. The Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area hence needs to be expanded and its mandate properly enforced to protect this region adequately.

Alice, a small rural town under Raymond Mhlaba Municipality, is one of the communities under the coverage of Forte FM. This study assessed the role that Forte FM plays in facilitating the development of Alice community. The study adopted a mixed method design in which questionnaires and interviews were used to collect primary data. The study findings show that although Forte FM is faced with serious financial challenges, it contributes to the development of Alice in various ways which includes providing the community with agricultural information, health information, promoting local culture, equipping the community with skills, promote local artists and sports personnel and educational programmes. The findings also revealed that the community is involved in the management of some aspects of the station’s operations through a board which is elected annually by the community itself. The results indicate that the radio station involve some community members in programming as experts on some topics or as people who have experienced an ordeal so they could share their experiences and advice other people how to manage similar situations. However, there is need to involve the community in the whole production process. The respondents’ attributed poor levels of community participation in programming to insufficient funds. The study recommends that Forte FM should lobby members of the community to fund the production of programmes since the station belongs to the community. This will enhance the sense of community ownership towards the radio station.

Assessment of anti-urease and consequential inhibitory potential of South African honey extracts on the multiplication of drug-resistant, vacA and cagA positive helicobacter pylori strains under acidic conditions

- Description: Helicobacter pylori, a neutralophile chronically infects the gastric stomach of more than half of the world’s population. Infection with the organism is associated with acute or chronic duodenal/gastric ulcer disease, gastritis, gastric adenocarcinoma, mucosa-associated tissue lymphoma (MALT) and primary B-cell gastric lymphoma and has been grouped as a class one carcinogen by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Prevalence of this organism is very high in developing countries especially in Africa, including South Africa. H. pylori treatment using the common first and second line regimens, triple therapy with two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is showing inefficiency due to increasing drug resistance. However, newly developed treatment regimens seem to be more expensive and are accompanied by more side effects. Honey contains phytochemicals which are a wealthy source of biologically active compounds some of which have been put into good use in the pharmaceutical industry. Pathogenesis of H. pylori infection in the human stomach relies on several virulence factors which include the urease enzyme, cagA and vacA. The urease enzyme actively hydrolyses urea to produce ammonia an important by-product involved in pH regulation favouring the survival of the organism in the acidic human stomach. This study therefore focuses on screening for anti-urease solvent extracts of South African honey, and evaluate whether inhibition of urease offsets the growth of H. pylori under acidic conditions. Locally produced natural honeys; Bush honey, Raw honey, Gold Crest honey, Q Bee honey, Little Bee honey, Fleures honey-radurised, Siyakholwa pure honey and Manuka honey; an import from New Zealand were purchased and the method by Syazana et al. (2010) was used for the extraction of compounds in honey. A standard strain ATCC 43526 (American Type Culture Collection, Manassas, VA, USA) and 48 pure cultures obtained from clinical isolates cultured from gastric corpus biopsy specimen of patients with gastric morbidities who were ix visiting the endoscopy unit in Livingstone Hospital, Port Elizabeth between June 2008 to December 2008 were initially used as source of urease enzyme as per extraction method done by Amin et al. (2013), but with modifications. Prior to urease extraction, H. pylori strains were identified by biochemical tests (urease, catalase, oxidase, Gram stain), confirmed by PCR targeting the glmM gene (140 bp) and drug resistance profiling was done on all the 48 strains according to Seanego et al. (2012). The screening for anti-urease active compounds was done according to Kaltwasser et al. (1966), a method relying on the reduction of NADH in a coupled urease dehydrogenase (GDH) system. Acetohydroxamic acid was used as a standard inhibitor. Prevalence of cytotoxin-associated gene A (cagA) gene and vacuolating cytotoxin gene A (vacA) gene was determined among all 48 clinical samples. The standard strains of H. pylori, X47 (cagA positive), J99 (vacA s1m1) and Tx30a (s2m2) were used as positive controls. H. pylori’s growth was then monitored under acidic pH in a cocktail spiked with anti-urease compounds (test samples) and in a cocktail without anti-urease compounds (negative control). Acetohydroxamic acid was used as a standard urease inhibitor. H. pylori multiplication was monitored in Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHIB) adjusted to pH of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The strain MP01 was used as a standard urease negative strain while X47 and J99 were used as positive standards for cagA and vacA s1m1 respectively. The compounds that had anti-urease activity and were successful towards suppressing the multiplication of H. pylori under acidic environment, all other factors optimised, were subjected to gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatograph spectrometry (LCMS) to determine volatile compounds and drugs in honey extracts respectively. The findings of this study revealed that at a concentration of 50 mg/mL, urease inhibition by petroleum ether extracts of Gold Crest and Fleures honey, hexane extracts of Little Bee and Manuka honey, and chloroform extracts of Bush honey and Q Bee honey had a range above or equal to 50 percent and there was no significance difference in urease inhibition percentage (I percent) of urease from different sources including that extracted from drug resistant H. pylori (p >0.05). Virulence factors are important for the pathogenesis of H. pylori. All the 48 clinical isolates were glmM (140 bp) positive and cagA was detected in 97.9 percent of the test isolates. The vacA gene was detected in all isolates but with different subtypes. The vacA allelic combination s1m1 was detected in 75 percent of the test isolates and s1m2 allelic combination was detected in 16.7 percent of the test isolates while the combination s2m2 was detected in 8.3 percent of the test isolates. None of the test isolates possessed the allelic combination s2m1. When H. pylori multiplication was monitored under acidic conditions in the presence of anti-urease active compounds, it was revealed that anti-urease active compounds in honey are capable of inhibiting the normal multiplication of H. pylori strains that are cagA positive, vacA positive and drug resistant. The GC-MS analysis showed that Fleures honey (urease I percent = 67.8 – 68.5 percent) and Gold Crest honey (urease I percent = 50.9 percent – 53.3 percent), all petroleum ether extracts had 27 and 26 volatile compounds. The hexane extract of Manuka honey (urease I percent = 50.0 – 53.2) had 43 compounds detected. The chloroform extract of Q Bee (urease I percent = 64.2 – 66.2 percent) had 13 volatile compounds detected. All the volatile compounds considered as representative samples of GC-MS analysis had a spectral matching ≥ 90 percent with the NIST11 library. However, the majority of compounds that were detected by LC-MS in representative honey extracts include vardenafil, urapidil, hydrocortisone, e.t.c which are drugs commonly used in the treatment of different ailments or infections that affect human beings. In addition, two xi drugs, sulfaquinoxaline and hydroxyquinoline which are used in veterinary medicine and antiseptic, disinfectant and pesticide applications in agricultural activities were detected in Little Bee honey. We therefore conclude that inhibition of urease has a bactericidal effect on drug resistant, cagA positive and vacA positive H. pylori strains growing under acidic environment.

The urease enzyme actively hydrolyses urea to produce ammonia an important by-product involved in pH regulation favouring the survival of the organism in the acidic human stomach. This study therefore focuses on screening for anti-urease solvent extracts of South African honey, and evaluate whether inhibition of urease offsets the growth of H. pylori under acidic conditions. Locally produced natural honeys; Bush honey, Raw honey, Gold Crest honey, Q Bee honey, Little Bee honey, Fleures honey-radurised, Siyakholwa pure honey and Manuka honey; an import from New Zealand were purchased and the method by Syazana et al. (2010) was used for the extraction of compounds in honey. A standard strain ATCC 43526 (American Type Culture Collection, Manassas, VA, USA) and 48 pure cultures obtained from clinical isolates cultured from gastric corpus biopsy specimen of patients with gastric morbidities who were ix visiting the endoscopy unit in Livingstone Hospital, Port Elizabeth between June 2008 to December 2008 were initially used as source of urease enzyme as per extraction method done by Amin et al. (2013), but with modifications. Prior to urease extraction, H. pylori strains were identified by biochemical tests (urease, catalase, oxidase, Gram stain), confirmed by PCR targeting the glmM gene (140 bp) and drug resistance profiling was done on all the 48 strains according to Seanego et al. (2012). The screening for anti-urease active compounds was done according to Kaltwasser et al. (1966), a method relying on the reduction of NADH in a coupled urease dehydrogenase (GDH) system. Acetohydroxamic acid was used as a standard inhibitor. Prevalence of cytotoxin-associated gene A (cagA) gene and vacuolating cytotoxin gene A (vacA) gene was determined among all 48 clinical samples. The standard strains of H. pylori, X47 (cagA positive), J99 (vacA s1m1) and Tx30a (s2m2) were used as positive controls. H. pylori’s growth was then monitored under acidic pH in a cocktail spiked with anti-urease compounds (test samples) and in a cocktail without anti-urease compounds (negative control). Acetohydroxamic acid was used as a standard urease inhibitor. H. pylori multiplication was monitored in Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHIB) adjusted to pH of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The strain MP01 was used as a standard urease negative strain while X47 and J99 were used as positive standards for cagA and vacA s1m1 respectively. The compounds that had anti-urease activity and were successful towards suppressing the multiplication of H. pylori under acidic environment, all other factors optimised, were subjected to gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatograph spectrometry (LCMS) to determine volatile compounds and drugs in honey extracts respectively. The findings of this study revealed that at a concentration of 50 mg/mL, urease inhibition by petroleum ether extracts of Gold Crest and Fleures honey, hexane extracts of Little Bee and Manuka honey, and chloroform extracts of Bush honey and Q Bee honey had a range above or equal to 50 percent and there was no significance difference in urease inhibition percentage (I percent) of urease from different sources including that extracted from drug resistant H. pylori (p >0.05). Virulence factors are important for the pathogenesis of H. pylori. All the 48 clinical isolates were glmM (140 bp) positive and cagA was detected in 97.9 percent of the test isolates. The vacA gene was detected in all isolates but with different subtypes. The vacA allelic combination s1m1 was detected in 75 percent of the test isolates and s1m2 allelic combination was detected in 16.7 percent of the test isolates while the combination s2m2 was detected in 8.3 percent of the test isolates. None of the test isolates possessed the allelic combination s2m1. When H. pylori multiplication was monitored under acidic conditions in the presence of anti-urease active compounds, it was revealed that anti-urease active compounds in honey are capable of inhibiting the normal multiplication of H. pylori strains that are cagA positive, vacA positive and drug resistant. The GC-MS analysis showed that Fleures honey (urease I percent = 67.8 – 68.5 percent) and Gold Crest honey (urease I percent = 50.9 percent – 53.3 percent), all petroleum ether extracts had 27 and 26 volatile compounds. The hexane extract of Manuka honey (urease I percent = 50.0 – 53.2) had 43 compounds detected. The chloroform extract of Q Bee (urease I percent = 64.2 – 66.2 percent) had 13 volatile compounds detected. All the volatile compounds considered as representative samples of GC-MS analysis had a spectral matching ≥ 90 percent with the NIST11 library. However, the majority of compounds that were detected by LC-MS in representative honey extracts include vardenafil, urapidil, hydrocortisone, e.t.c which are drugs commonly used in the treatment of different ailments or infections that affect human beings. In addition, two xi drugs, sulfaquinoxaline and hydroxyquinoline which are used in veterinary medicine and antiseptic, disinfectant and pesticide applications in agricultural activities were detected in Little Bee honey. We therefore conclude that inhibition of urease has a bactericidal effect on drug resistant, cagA positive and vacA positive H. pylori strains growing under acidic environment.

The major findings of this study include the following: the National SME policy is an important policy which if well implemented would help the development of SMEs and also have great impact on the local economic development. Among the problems associated with the policy according to the MP’s are financial problems, illiteracy level of people in their constituency, Land segmentation problem, marketing problems. This study therefore recommended that government should strengthen financial laws that mandates financial institutions to give low interest rate loans to SMEs with little or no collateral. The government should accelerated development and upgrade of rural roads and rail network and other infrastructural facilities and review taxies in favour of local manufacturers especially the SMEs.

SPSS was used for data analysis. Major findings revealed that the selected institutional factors significantly impacted on student satisfaction, and their decisions to stay within the institution. Based on the results of the study, a framework to assist the institution ensure that student are receiving the services that they need from the institution as early as possible, was proposed. The study provided therefore the useful data for institutions to use in their quality enhancement activities. The result of the study can be incorporated into enrolment management planning and the intervention strategies, to improve the success of students at the selected institution in Eastern Cape.

The programme is in line with a number of policies that strive to unlock the agricultural potential in inducing the much talked about radical economic transformation. This study was aimed at establishing if the outlay of the implementation processes and the outcomes of the maize cropping programme in Eastern Cape are sufficient to achieve the stated objectives. The study adopted a triangulation method to get comprehensive understanding of the programme and for accuracy and verification of the data collected. A pre-tested semistructured questionnaire was used to collect the demographics and socio-economic status of the respondents; technical skills and capabilities; implementation processes of the programme and the perceptions of the participants and key strategic role players in the maize cropping programme. A total of 120 respondents from DRDAR’s 2016/2017 financial year supported list and 9 key informants were sampled for the study. Furthermore, a gross margin analysis was used to establish the viability and the sustainability of the programme with and without DRDAR’s subsidies. For purposes of determining if there was any relation between the maize enterprise income and 13 independent variables, a multiple regression model was employed. The results of the study show that the programme is dominated by old and uneducated individuals with an average age of 60 years. The implementation processes are proving to be fairly progressed however, at a very limited scale. This includes provision of production inputs and mechanization services on time, formation of self-serving legal entities and unlocking the private sector investment. The gross margins generated from the programme have been observed to be non-viable and unsustainable. As a result, only 31% of the respondents were able to attain a gross margin equal or greater than the allocable costs of producing maize both under irrigation and dry land. The results of the regression model indicated that, only 5 of the 13 independent variables (household gender, marital status, years of participation, area planted and yield) were found to have a significant effect to the maize enterprise income. Overall, the DRDAR’s maize cropping programme has failed to meet its intended objectives. In addition, more than 70 percent of the programme participants produced for subsistence purposes and showed no desire to fully commercialise their operations.

- Description: This study focussed on the synthesis and host properties of four different broad categories of potential host compounds, namely optically active and racemic TADDOL [(4R,5R)-α,α,α’,α’-tetraphenyl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanol] and derivatives, TTFOL [(3R,4R)-2,2,5,5-tetraphenyltetrahydrofuran-3,4-diol], amino acid ester-derived compounds [(S)-4-(2-amino-3-hydroxy-3,3-diphenylpropyl)phenol], and compounds derived from xanthone [9-amino-9-phenylxanthene and 1,2-bis(9-phenyl-9H-xanthen-9-yl)hydrazine]. The potential hosts were recrystallized from a range of possible guest species and the resulting solids analysed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. If inclusion was observed by this technique, the complexes were analysed further using single crystal X-ray techniques and thermal experiments where possible. Competition studies were carried out where these were deemed appropriate. Optically active and racemic TADDOLs were synthesized using L-(+) and DL-(±)-tartaric acid respectively. Two further derivatives were prepared whereby the hydroxyl groups were substituted for chlorine and azide in order to assess the effect of this change on the inclusion ability. Both the optically active and racemic TADDOLs displayed similar host abilities, complexing with guests with 1:1 host:guest ratios as determined through 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Competition experiments showed that both forms of TADDOL exhibited similar guest preferences for pyridine and the methylpyridine isomers. Pyridine however was preferred over 2-methylpyridine by optically active TADDOL while the racemic form preferred this methyl-substituted guest over pyridine. Thermal analysis studies showed, surprisingly, that the TADDOL complexes containing pyridine had higher relative thermal stabilities than those containing the methylpyridines, whether the host was optically active or not. The preference order of these hosts for these guests can, therefore, not be used as a predictor for the relative thermal stability of the complexes. TTFOL was found to include only ethanol, 2-methylpyridine and dioxane from the range of guest species used; the complex with dioxane did not produce X-ray quality crystals. The L-tyrosine derivative, (S)-4-(2-amino-3-hydroxy-3,3-diphenylpropyl)phenol, was an ineffective host incapable of including any of the guests used in these experiments. The two xanthone derivatives, 9-amino-9-phenylxanthene and 1,2-bis(9-phenyl-9H-xanthen-9-yl)hydrazine each formed complexes with one guest species (morpholine and DMF, respectively).

The study focused on one Eastern Cape comprehensive university. The programme, National Diploma: Fashion, is offered by the university at two campuses (120km apart). Although this programme is currently offered at both of the sites under the auspices of the university, disparity exists in many of the academic functions within the programme. The most challenging is assessment and the implications of a non-existent standard framework for assessment across both campuses. This research undertook to identify a framework that would best serve the Fashion programme of the researched university. Assessment in the context of this study referred to the process of both gathering evidence of student learning as well as assigning grades to that learning. The lack of an assessment framework affects the quality of assessment. Consistency in the assessment process across both campuses is important. At present assessment is not consistent as it is done independently on each campus. This lack of consistency could prove to favour students at the one campus while marginalizing students at the other campus and vice versa. Inconsistency arises from staff having no common assessment framework to refer to when assessment takes place. This study was a case study. Interviews were conducted with a sample of lecturers and students from both sites. A document analysis of relevant policies was done. The documents included the Higher Education Quality Committee document Criteria for Programme Accreditation, 2004, the South African Qualification Authority document Criteria and Guidelines for Assessment of NQF Registered Unit Standards and Qualifications, 2001, and the South African Qualification Authority document Guidelines for Integrated Assessment, 2005. University policy documents pertaining to assessment were also included in the research.The findings of this study lead to the conclusion that there is no clear assessment framework currently in place for the National Diploma: Fashion at one Eastern Cape comprehensive university. The assessment methods currently in use are not fully understood and comprehended by lecturers or students. The assessment types are limited with little or no variety as to how assessment is practiced. Although continuous assessment is advocated in the department, a lack of understanding by lecturers and students as to the true practice of continuous assessment is evident. Much of the assessment is done at the end of a teaching module, rather than embedded in the teaching module. This means that assessment is done of learning rather than for learning.

The documents included the Higher Education Quality Committee document Criteria for Programme Accreditation, 2004, the South African Qualification Authority document Criteria and Guidelines for Assessment of NQF Registered Unit Standards and Qualifications, 2001, and the South African Qualification Authority document Guidelines for Integrated Assessment, 2005. University policy documents pertaining to assessment were also included in the research.The findings of this study lead to the conclusion that there is no clear assessment framework currently in place for the National Diploma: Fashion at one Eastern Cape comprehensive university. The assessment methods currently in use are not fully understood and comprehended by lecturers or students. The assessment types are limited with little or no variety as to how assessment is practiced. Although continuous assessment is advocated in the department, a lack of understanding by lecturers and students as to the true practice of continuous assessment is evident. Much of the assessment is done at the end of a teaching module, rather than embedded in the teaching module. This means that assessment is done of learning rather than for learning.

Attitudes of community stakeholders towards stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS in Highland View, linked to St Patrick's Clinic, Bizana, Eastern Cape

- Description: The researcher attempted to investigate attitudes of community stakeholders towards stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This is because people living with HIV/AIDS are usually subjected to negative and positive attitudes in South African communities. The study made use of a case study as a specific research design which was explorative and descriptive. The study employed in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and secondary data sources to collect data. The study was a cross-sectional and adopted a non-probability sampling methodology, but specifically purposive technique. The study used 25 participants who consisted of 12 PLWHA, 5 nurses, and 8 selected community members. The data were analyzed through content thematic analysis. The findings that emanated from the study were: awareness of stigmatizing attitudes subjected to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA); the attitudes displayed towards PLWHA, the drivers of stigma; the impact of stigma on PLWHA; PLWHA suffers immense psychosocial deficit; PLWHA face a state of abject poverty; PLWHA faces Psycho-emotional deficit; the secrecy surrounding the virus forms a fertile ground for infection; fear of contagion; stigma confounds chances of HIV/AIDS disclosure and issues of confidentiality. The study recommended that: the government should prioritize the PLWHA’s human rights; adoption of social media platforms to raise awareness and education of HIV/AIDS; collaboration between the Department of Health and the Department of Traditional affairs; invention of a youth-based psycho-emotional programme; and establishment of in-depth community supported interventions.
