South African traditional healers’ perceptions and treatment of the symptoms of depression

Specifically, in South Africa, the lifetime prevalence of major depressive disorder is 9.7%. Research conducted on traditional healing estimates that as high as 80% of black individuals in South Africa choose to consult traditional healers. Although there was initial consensus that the use of traditional healers reflected a lack of access to alternative resources, more recent research has however indicated that traditional healers are consulted even when psychiatric facilities and medication are available. Research has illustrated that many patients that chose to consult traditional healers do so as a result of their shared beliefs, and traditional healers' ability to understand the cultural frameworks underlying illness. The current study investigated how traditional healers in the Eastern Cape perceive and treat phenomena currently understood as the symptoms of depression and how these understandings can be incorporated into collaborations between Western medicine and traditional healing practice. A qualitative research design was used to examine the perspectives and treatment methods of isiXhosa traditional healers in the Eastern Cape. Four healers participated in the study. Key findings indicated that there is no single cause or definition of the phenomenon of depression by healers. Causality is greatly attributed to spiritual causes and ancestors play a key role in guiding the diagnosis and multiple treatment interventions employed by healers to treat the experience of depression. Finally, all traditional healers expressed a willingness to collaborate and work with the Western healthcare system, however, they indicated a strong need for greater recognition as a valid healthcare system. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Psychology, 2023

Climate change poses a significant threat to South Africa’s water resources, food security, health, infrastructure, ecosystem services and biodiversity. Negative impacts of climate variability on agriculture, especially on maize the staple crop, will worsen the food security status of the nation as most of South Africa’s maize crop is produced in summer and highly depends on rainfall. This study attempted to assess the impact of climate on maize production in South Africa using secondary time series data for the period 1937 to 2018. Rainfall and temperature were used as proxies for climate variability. The Granger Causality Model was used to examine the causal linkages between climatic variables (temperature or rainfall) and maize output in South Africa for the study period. The major outcome of the analysis was that there is a two-way causal relationship between maize production and temperature. The results also indicated that there is uni-directional causality between maize yield and rainfall. Furthermore, the Variance Decomposition Model was used to forecast the relationship between climatic elements and maize production in South Africa. The result showed that all variables have an effect on maize yield, with temperature having the least effect. The last objective of the study was to profile the maize output trend for the period from 1937 to 2018. The main findings from the analysis indicate that maize production in South Africa has a general upward slope. The study recommends that the government should intensify the provision of irrigation systems for the farmers in the most vulnerable areas to mitigate the climate change. Antibiotics combination therapy option for the control of antimicrobial-resistant non-cholera causing Vibrio species recovered from environmental niches of Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Increased rate of antibiotic resistance (AR) poses a serious threat with a resultant notion of a possible end of the antibiotics era, making it a problem of concern to public health and a great implication on the world economy and human society. Despite many approaches developed to curb this menace, antibiotics resistance is still a challenge worldwide. This has made the use of combined therapy as one of the options in many cases. This study was conducted to assess antibiotics combination therapy as an option for the control of antimicrobial-resistant non-cholera causing Vibrio species that were recovered from the environment in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Two hundred and twenty-eight Vibrio species were recovered from the environment in the Province, and these were deposited in the archive of AEMREG. PCR was used to identify target Vibrio species. Disc diffusion method was used to evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility profile of the confirmed isolates against 11 antibiotics commonly used against infections. MIC and MBC were determined using antibiotics (imipenem, tetracycline, and nalidixic acid) that high resistance was discovered. Checkerboard assay was used to carry out antibiotics combination assay, and the FICI was calculated. Rate of kill was also determined using ½ × MIC, 1 × MIC, and 2 × MIC concentrations of the combined antibiotics at 2 hr intervals. One hundred of the isolates were confirmed to be Vibrio parahaemolyticus, 82 were Vibrio vulnificus and 46 were Vibrio fluvialis. Twenty-two (22) percent of the Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates showed resistance against tetracycline and their resistance against other antimicrobials is as follows; nalidixic acid (16 percent), ampicillin (14 percent), cefotaxime (14 percent), chloramphenicol (12 percent) and amikacin (11 percent). For Vibrio vulnificus, prevalence of resistance was as follows: imipenem (40 percent), tetracycline (22 percent), ampicillin (18 percent), meropenem (15 percent), and chloramphenicol (11 percent). Vibrio fluvialis showed the following resistance profile: nalidixic acid (28 percent), tetracycline (28percent), ampicillin (20 percent), chloramphenicol (15 percent), amikacin (11 percent) and cefotaxime (11 percent). About 38 multiple antibiotic resistance phenotypes (MARP) were recorded in all species that were evaluated. About 23 percent were resistant to over 3 antibiotics used. The multiple antibiotic resistant indices (MARI) ranged between 0.3 and 0.8. MIC and MBC were carried against isolates that were resistant to the two most common antibiotics tested. MIC and MBC were determined in the following order: tetracycline and nalidixic acid at concentrations ranging from 16 μg/ml to 1024 μg/ml for Vibrio parahaemolyticus and 32 μg/ml to 2048 μg/ml for Vibrio fluvialis. Also, the MIC and MBC of imipenem and tetracycline at concentrations ranging from 8 μg/ml to 256 μg/ml for Vibrio vulnificus were determined. Antibiotics combination therapy was carried out and synergistic activity was observed in 3 of the 16 resistant V. parahaemolyticus isolates, 3 of the16 resistant V. vulnificus isolates and 2 of the 13 resistant V. fluvialis isolates. Antagonism was not observed across all the drug combinations. Rate of kill was also determined and at 6 hr exposure time, the highest concentration (2 × MIC) exhibited bactericidal effect across all three Vibrio species. Design, Development and Testing of a Low-cost Sub-Joule μPPT for a PocketQube

A small satellite called the CubeSat was created by two university professors to help students understand satellite design. The idea of small satellites caught on and they became popular due to their low cost, quick development time and easy deployment. The inexpensive nature of small satellites has helped lower the entry barrier to space and led to a movement called the “democratisation of space”. The popularity of small satellites has also caught the eye of private companies that recognise the potential of commercialising small satellite technologies. Nowadays, small satellites are being considered for more complex and challenging space missions. However for a small satellite to reach its full potential, it needs to be equipped with a proper propulsion system. Governments, space agencies, companies and universities around the world have started to research new innovative miniaturised space propulsion technologies. Nowadays, there are many newly developed miniaturised propulsion technologies available. The new propulsion systems are either sold by the companies and universities at a very high price, or research and development is closely guarded due to the potential commercial value of the propulsion system. Companies and universities have primarily focused on researching and developing top-of-the-line micro-propulsion devices to win lucrative research funds. This has resulted in a lack of research into cheap reliable micropropulsion as there have been no incentives for companies and universities to develop this area. As a result, fund-limited students and individuals have been left behind, defeating the purpose of small satellites. This dissertation focuses on designing and developing a low-cost sub-joule micro-PPT propulsion system for a PocketQube satellite. The first section covers the literature review, which looks at the different space propulsion technologies currently available. The next section covers the micro-PPT propulsion system’s mechanical and electrical design and development process. After the development process, the performance of the prototype is tested using various input parameters, as well as in vacuum conditions and over its lifetime. The test results show that the optimal performance is obtained with an input voltage supply of 5V at a pulse frequency of 0.5Hz, which achieves a minimal impulse bit v of 0.698μNs and thrust range of 0.349~1.071μN. In comparison to the STRaND-1 3U CubeSat’s PPT, performance data show that the developed μPPT propulsion system is a competitive propulsion solution, as it achieves more thrust with similar minimal impulse bit, using only one third of the power consumption. Formulation of methyldopa 250 mg tablets by direct compression using a quality by design approach

- Description: Various pharmaceutical materials are known to take up moisture during both storage and manufacture. This phenomenon, termed hygroscopy, can result in unacceptable levels of moisture, potentially having deleterious effects on product quality, and consequently product efficacy and safety. Drug inefficacy specifically can result in life-threatening complications for the pregnant mother with uncontrolled blood pressure. Marketed as immediate release tablets, methyldopa is an antihypertensive drug commonly used in South Africa to treat hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Despite being in use for over 50 years, the physicochemical challenges posed by methyldopa remain ever present. Methyldopa is not only significantly hygroscopic, but also prone to oxidative and hydrolytic degradation that can be accelerated by moisture. Poor compression behaviour, another limitation of methyldopa, leaves the formulation scientist with a constellation of formulation hurdles that must be faced, understood and overcome. This is a task that can be tackled using elements of the Quality by Design (QbD) approach. Using this approach, the impact of these phenomena on tablet quality can be better understood and controlled. This study was aimed at using this approach to develop a formulation of methyldopa 250 mg tablets. Direct compression, a simple and moisture-free process, was selected for the manufacture of methyldopa tablets. After careful review of literature and consultation with experts, excipients were selected for the candidate formulation and preliminary concentrations established for each. Similarly, settings for mixing and compression variables were established. Adopted from the QbD framework, the risk posed to tablet quality by these factors was qualitatively analysed using Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA) and quantitatively evaluated using Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA). Eight (8) factors determined to be high risk were further investigated in a preliminary experiment that followed a 12-batch Plackett Burman design. Data from this experiment was used to draw statistical relationships between the aforementioned factors and tablet quality attributes, thus shedding light on excipients and process parameters with practically significant impact on methyldopa tablet quality. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) of the response data reported SSG concentration, citric acid monohydrate xxvii concentration and mixing speed as key factors (p<0.05), demonstrating the need to control these factors for quality targets to be met. These three factors underpinned the 16-batch definitive experiment that followed, conceived using a Box Behnken design (BBD) including four batches prepared at the centerpoint values in the region of experimentation. The optimal methyldopa tablet formulation was achieved at the following settings: 1.0 % m/m magnesium stearate, 1.0 % m/m colloidal silica, 3.9 % m/m sodium starch glycolate, 1.7 % m/m citric acid monohydrate, mixing speed of 101 rpm, 6 minutes of pre-lubrication mixing, 2 minutes of lubrication and compression speed of 20 rpm. These settings were included in the design space and subsequent control strategy. It was learned that, within the design space, the risk to tablet quality and, by extension, the patient, was insignificant. - Description: Various pharmaceutical materials are known to take up moisture during both storage and manufacture. This phenomenon, termed hygroscopy, can result in unacceptable levels of moisture, potentially having deleterious effects on product quality, and consequently product efficacy and safety. Drug inefficacy specifically can result in life-threatening complications for the pregnant mother with uncontrolled blood pressure. Marketed as immediate release tablets, methyldopa is an antihypertensive drug commonly used in South Africa to treat hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Despite being in use for over 50 years, the physicochemical challenges posed by methyldopa remain ever present. Methyldopa is not only significantly hygroscopic, but also prone to oxidative and hydrolytic degradation that can be accelerated by moisture. Poor compression behaviour, another limitation of methyldopa, leaves the formulation scientist with a constellation of formulation hurdles that must be faced, understood and overcome. This is a task that can be tackled using elements of the Quality by Design (QbD) approach. Using this approach, the impact of these phenomena on tablet quality can be better understood and controlled. This study was aimed at using this approach to develop a formulation of methyldopa 250 mg tablets. Direct compression, a simple and moisture-free process, was selected for the manufacture of methyldopa tablets. After careful review of literature and consultation with experts, excipients were selected for the candidate formulation and preliminary concentrations established for each. Similarly, settings for mixing and compression variables were established. Adopted from the QbD framework, the risk posed to tablet quality by these factors was qualitatively analysed using Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA) and quantitatively evaluated using Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA). Eight (8) factors determined to be high risk were further investigated in a preliminary experiment that followed a 12-batch Plackett Burman design. Data from this experiment was used to draw statistical relationships between the aforementioned factors and tablet quality attributes, thus shedding light on excipients and process parameters with practically significant impact on methyldopa tablet quality. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) of the response data reported SSG concentration, citric acid monohydrate xxvii concentration and mixing speed as key factors (p<0.05), demonstrating the need to control these factors for quality targets to be met. These three factors underpinned the 16-batch definitive experiment that followed, conceived using a Box Behnken design (BBD) including four batches prepared at the centerpoint values in the region of experimentation. The optimal methyldopa tablet formulation was achieved at the following settings: 1.0 % m/m magnesium stearate, 1.0 % m/m colloidal silica, 3.9 % m/m sodium starch glycolate, 1.7 % m/m citric acid monohydrate, mixing speed of 101 rpm, 6 minutes of pre-lubrication mixing, 2 minutes of lubrication and compression speed of 20 rpm. These settings were included in the design space and subsequent control strategy. It was learned that, within the design space, the risk to tablet quality and, by extension, the patient, was insignificant. First, two potential transportation modes (Wet (W) and Dry (D) transportation) conducted at a cooler (14˚C) and average ambient (18˚C) temperatures with six replicates of each were compared with control treatments (six replicates) that were not subjected to transport, kept in water at 18˚C. Eighty hours post-initial settlement, the 14W treatment had significantly lower settlement (p=0.03) than the other three treatments (14D, 18W, 18D) and the Control. The Dry method was the prefered method to transport larvae as it is logistically simpler to employ. The second experiment investigated the effect of different stocking densities (200, 400 and 800 larvae cm-2) for the Dry method 18˚C over two transit periods (six and twelve hours) on post-transport settlement and post-settlement survival of H. midae larvae. Compared to the control, there was no difference in the number of settled larvae (p=0.368) and larvae still swimming (p=0.835) across all treatments. This suggested that H. midae larvae can be transported for twelve hours at 800 larvae cm-2 without compromising post-transport settlement or survival. This study’s results and recommendations can be used by abalone farms when there is a need to move abalone H. midae larvae between farms or to seeding sites for sea ranching. To explore this importance, senior phase mathematics teachers are encouraged to adopt gamification technology such as Kahoot! in assessment. The study adopted a case study research design with a interpretivist research paradigm, as this method allows detailed exploration and understanding of a specific context through a close connection with the participants. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires, focus group interviews, non-participant observations, and reflective journals. The research involved ten purposively selected senior-phase mathematics teachers from two schools in the Sarah Baartman District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The study drew upon Vygoysky's Sociocultural Theory for its theoretical framework, while the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge was used for analysis. The data analysis pursued an inductive approach. Adopting a thematic analysis included coding participant responses, organizing codes into concepts and categories, and developing a theoretical framework from the resultant categories. A four-phase process was involved: coding, conceptualizing, categorizing, and theorizing, was employed. This process and using NVivo software for data organization and management helped identify patterns, themes, and significant concerns surrounding the study's core subject. The findings from the study were as follows: Firstly, it was revealed that most teachers have a positive perception and attitude towards using Kahoot! for formative assessment, believing that it enhances teaching and learning quality. However, they showed scepticism due to insufficient Information and Communication Technologies knowledge and training. Second, teachers' pedagogical and technological experiences were predominantly enjoyable. Kahoot! was accepted as beneficial for promoting collaboration, interaction, and immediate feedback. Third, the study identified enabling and constraining factors in using Kahoot! for formative assessment. The enabling factors include Kahoot!, which was convenient and accessible, promoted immediate feedback and fostered collaboration and interaction. The constraining factors include Information and Communication Technologies and network interference, which posed limitations. The research concluded that Kahoot! as a platform for formative assessment indeed scaffold mathematical understanding. The study recommends increasing teachers' access to educational technology, incorporating continuous professional development programs, providing subject-specific training, and encouraging teachers to adapt to emerging technologies. - Description: Invasion by alien plant species in South Africa continues to compromise the stability of ecosystems by causing declines in biodiversity, altering soil nutrients and processes, and subsequently transforming ecosystem functionality. Control of invasive alien plant species has been widely implemented in South Africa to minimize their negative impacts; however, the legacy effects can persist long after the plant has been removed. The impacts of Acacia dealbata clearing on soil properties and native vegetation recovery remains understudied despite their significance in ecological restoration and monitoring. This comparative study determined the impacts of A. dealbata clearing on both soil physicochemical properties and vegetation in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Soils were collected from three different clearing treatments, namely, cleared, invaded, and uninvaded, on 5 m x 5 m plots over three summer months. The plots were replicated four times for each clearing treatment, making a total of 72 sampling plots. Soils were assessed for soil pH, resistivity, P, C, N, and exchangeable cations as well as soil moisture content, penetration resistance, infiltration rate, hydraulic conductivity, and water repellency. Clearing of A. dealbata did not have any significant effects on most soil nutrients, however, there were variations in soil pH, resistance, and Na. Soil pH was significantly higher in the uninvaded treatments than in the cleared and invaded treatments. Soil moisture content was significantly higher in the cleared treatments than the adjacent invaded and uninvaded treatments, but this was observed in the month of December only. Soil penetration resistance and infiltration rates were significantly higher in the month of December in the cleared treatments. For all clearing treatments, no significant differences were recorded for soil hydraulic conductivity. These results on changes in soil properties following A. dealbata clearing are varied, with some soil properties showing decreases, an indication that removal of A. dealbata has the potential to shift soil properties towards a positive recovery trajectory. This study further assessed whether the clearing of A. dealbata facilitates the recovery of native plant species. Vegetation surveys were conducted in the three above-mentioned treatments and plots. Results showed little recruitment of native grasses and forbs, but the persistence of A. dealbata seedlings in the cleared treatments. Species richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity index were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the cleared and invaded treatments than the uninvaded treatments, and this was more visible for trees and shrubs. Cover for all species was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the uninvaded than the cleared and invaded treatments. This study observed the recruitment of some native species in the cleared treatments that were not present in the invaded treatments. Therefore, the recruitment and establishment of some native species, mostly grasses, in the cleared treatments gives assurance that passive restoration is on a positive vegetation recovery trajectory that can lead to recovery of native vegetation after A. dealbata clearing. Therefore, the study concludes that investing in ecological restoration after alien plant clearing is a necessity for complete ecosystem recovery to be achieved. Overall, the study concludes that the removal of A. dealbata triggers changes to some soil properties. Similarly, the study observed recruitment of some native grasses in cleared areas, an indication that alien plant clearing facilitates changes in both soil properties and vegetation. The effect of piospheres on the ecology of insectivorous birds and their arthropod prey

Piospheres are areas of local degradation around a central point due to overgrazing and increased herbivore presence. There is a paucity of information regarding the effect of localised degradation on arthropods and insectivorous birds. Both of these organisms play crucial roles in ecosystem functioning and stability and can be used as models to study ecosystem functioning. I investigated the effect of piospheres on arthropods and birds in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. I found that the abundance and diversity of arthropods were significantly reduced inside the piospheres due to the lack of vegetation. Termites were a group specifically negatively impacted by piospheres, with a significant reduction in their presence inside the piosphere. The family composition of arthropods also changed inside and outside the piospheres, with Caelifera, Diptera and Formicidae being the most dominant groups. The diversity of birds was also significantly reduced due to the degradation inside the piospheres. Looking at insectivorous birds, I found that the reduction in both vegetation and arthropod prey availability resulted in non-random avoidance of piospheres. This shows that piospheres negatively impact both arthropods and birds. The results from my study are supported by other literature studying the effects of habitat degradation associated with desertification. Due to the similarities of degradation between piospheres and desertification I make the argument that piospheres can be studied as localised models of desertification. The decrease in vegetation and arthropod abundance and diversity was found to further impact the feeding success of insectivorous birds. Using piospheres as a model for desertification, I found that the foraging effort of birds is significantly reduced within a degraded area due to the lack of vegetation providing safety to arthropod prey species. In addition to this, the foraging efficiency of insectivorous birds is significantly reduced inside the piospheres due to the decreased arthropod abundance and diversity. This shows that inside the piospheres birds spend less time searching for insects and have fewer successful feeds. This shows that piospheres negatively impact both arthropods and birds. The results from my study are supported by other literature studying the effects of habitat degradation associated with desertification. Due to the similarities of degradation between piospheres and desertification I make the argument that piospheres can be studied as localised models of desertification. The decrease in vegetation and arthropod abundance and diversity was found to further impact the feeding success of insectivorous birds. Using piospheres as a model for desertification, I found that the foraging effort of birds is significantly reduced within a degraded area due to the lack of vegetation providing safety to arthropod prey species. In addition to this, the foraging efficiency of insectivorous birds is significantly reduced inside the piospheres due to the decreased arthropod abundance and diversity. This shows that inside the piospheres birds spend less time searching for insects and have fewer successful feeds. As a consequence, word-of-mouth is their main form of communication with one another. Whistles are the ‘low-tech’ device used for community-wide communication to alert residents of an emergency, or about a meeting or protest. My findings contest generalised claims of society moving towards a network sociality, where individuality and project-based communication is valued over more communal forms of living. They also demonstrate the ways in which coloniality shapes almost every aspect of marginalised people’s lives, making word of mouth the most significant form of communication, notwithstanding the apparent availability of digital technology. This study evaluated the phytochemical constituents, antioxidant activity and antidiabetic activity of selected red marine macro-algae sampled from Gqeberha, South Africa. The species collected were identified as Gelidium pristoides, Scinaia furcellata and Portieria tripinita using DNA barcoding. Results showed the presence of several phytochemicals such as saponins, phenols, flavonols, tannins, proanthocyanidins and flavonoids. Methanol was a more effective polyphenol extraction solvent than water. Gelidium pristoides (H2O) was observed to contain the highest phenol and proanthocyanidin content, which correlated to Gelidium pristoides (H2O) having the greatest FRAP and DPPH radical scavenging activity IC50 at 0.227. Portieria tripinita (MeOH) extract had the greatest flavonoid content. Flavonol content was high for Scinaia furcellata while the highest tannin content was observed in both H2O and MeOH extracts of Gelidium pristoides. All the selected marine macro-algae species showed concentration-dependent reducing power. The extract with the highest ABTS scavenging activity was Gelidium pristoides (MeOH) IC50 at 0.227. Portieria tripinita was the only species that showed Nitric oxide scavenging activity, with (H2O) extract showing the highest activity IC50 at 3.052. Only MeOH extracts of Gelidium pristoides and Scinaia furcellata showed very slight α-amylase inhibition, however, all extracts successfully inhibited the activity of α-glucosidase with the exception of the H2O extracts of Scinaia furcellata. All crude extracts of Gelidium pristoides, Scinaia furcellata and Portieria tripinita showed no significant/weak effect on glucose uptake and utilization by C3A cells following 24 hours of treatment, with the exception of the aqueous extracts of Scinaia furcellata at the highest concentration of 100 μg/ml. The in-vitro MTT cytotoxicity assay revealed that only MeOH extracts of Gelidium pristoides and Scinaia furcellata had a 15 significant toxic effect on C3A hepatocytes at concentrations of 100 μg/ml and 25μg/ml, respectively. The South African Constitution (1996), Promotion of Administration Justice Act (2000) and Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (2000) forbade discrimination and exclusion of pregnant learners from school. In spite of these legislative frameworks, School Governing Body (SGB) continues to exclude pregnant learners from school. SGB claimed that pregnant learners are harmful to other female learners and is becoming a significant barrier to girls’ education. Research shows that learners’ pregnancy is predominant in rural areas, apparently poses a threat to female education (Annual School Survey Report, 2010). The purpose of this dissertation is to establish that SGB lacks power to do so; however, their resistance to the law by excluding the pregnant learners from school is in conflict with the South African Constitution. This dissertation investigated an alternative instrument of legal remedy to reduce the problem of learners’ pregnancy rather than exclusion. Green behaviours are measured as consisting of green entrepreneurial orientation, green technology dynamism and green innovation behaviour. Conversely, performance is defined as consisting of environmental performance, objective performance and subjective performance. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the purpose of this study, the study adopted a positivist paradigm which is motivated by the quantitative approach using a descriptive research design. Self-administered questionnaires were employed with a sample of 180 participants that were randomly selected across small businesses in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Findings/results: The major findings of the study, using simple linear regression analysis, revealed that a significant positive relationship between green entrepreneurial orientation and environmental, objective and subjective performance does exist. However, the hierarchical regression analysis results revealed that green technology dynamism and green innovation behaviour do not moderate the relationship between green entrepreneurial orientation and performance as measured by environmental, objective and subjective performance dimensions. Practical implications: Based on the findings of the study, small businesses need to develop policy related to promoting green behaviours, given that green entrepreneurial orientation has been found to be related to performance. They are consequently important for the maintenance of ecosystem structure and function, while also possessing characteristics which are useful for identifying climate-driven changes in oceanography at all trophic levels. This important faunal group is one of the most threatened, with climate change and fisheries bycatch mortality being the primary drivers of population declines. Understanding these threats is important for the management of threatened seabird populations. One impact of climate change and variability in climate occurs through changes in prey availability. As central place foragers, breeding seabirds have trip duration constraints due to the obligation of nest duties. This makes them particularly vulnerable to changes in prey availability within their foraging ranges. The ability to adjust foraging behaviour during environmental conditions which alter prey availability is an important attribute which can contribute to breeding success. Thus, investigating for this foraging behavioural plasticity during different breeding stages provides insights into how a species is likely to be impacted by climate change. The sooty albatross population on Marion Island was studied and displayed a degree of foraging behavioural plasticity during the five-year period of pronounced climatic variability studied. Incubating birds mainly foraged in the subtropical convergence zone (STCZ), the Sub Antarctic Front (SAF) and Subtropical Front (STF) which border it, and the region north of the STF. Brooding birds mainly used the SAF and Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ). Significantly different areas were used between years during both breeding stages. This population showed a lack of consistent habitat preferences which may offer resilience to progressive climatic variability and change. Interactions of sooty albatrosses, as well as white-chinned petrels for comparative purposes, with fisheries were also assessed. The two species were compared to shed light on possible explanations for differences in seabird-fishery interactions between the species. The impact of fisheries-related mortality (bycatch) is dependent on exposure to fishing activity and attraction to fishing boats encountered while foraging. Bycatch mortality has previously been proposed as the main cause of this sooty albatross population’s decline. Exposure and 6 attraction to fishing boats was found to be lower than that of white-chinned petrels which are bycatch prone. However, the current level of attraction exhibited by this sooty albatross population may expose a significant fraction of the population to bycatch risk due to its small population size. Additionally, all fishing boats were encountered north of the STF where non breeding individuals are now known to be distributed. Thus, the impact of fisheries on this population may mainly be mediated by more bycatch prone non-breeding individuals. Overall, the relative impact of fisheries bycatch mortality is suggested to be higher than that of climatic impacts on the sooty albatross population on Marion Island. - Description: This is an autoethnographic and performance-based study on the correlation between indigenous and modern cultures. It discusses the influence of globalisation, modernity, and of the Chopi people migrations to Maputo, the main city of Mozambique and to gold and platinum mines in South Africa, on timbila music. Timbila is both the name of a musical instrument (xylophone) and of a cultural manifestation, practiced by the Chopi people from Mozambique. It is one of the most documented music and dance cultures in Mozambique and was proclaimed as a masterpiece of the oral and immaterial heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2005. The oldest references by Father Andre Fernandes date from the 16th century. However, the most well-known timbila sources were written and recorded by Hugh Tracey, the founder of the International Library of African Music (ILAM), from 1940s. All these sources were based on traditional timbila music. None refers to contemporary timbila music, which is a mixture of timbila with Western musical instruments. The research is thus based on both historical and is new research to understand the role of the phenomena mentioned above to the reinterpretation of timbila music over the time. Performance based and autoethnography methods were selected because of my role as a pedagogue of the music and culture of timbila, allowing me to express my knowledge on this cultural expression. Literature review and interviews are the two procedures of data collecting employed to get an understanding of the research methods; the phenomena of modernity, globalisation and of the Chopis migration for the searching of better living conditions in Maputo and South Africa; and the approaches of different scholars who have written about timbila. The use of these methods and methodologies, allowed me to conclude that, Chopis migrations, modernity and globalisation has allowed the emergence of a modern version of timbila music; internationalisation and dissemination of this musical expression; and contributes to the extinction of traditional timbila orchestras in Zavala. - Description: This is an autoethnographic and performance-based study on the correlation between indigenous and modern cultures. It discusses the influence of globalisation, modernity, and of the Chopi people migrations to Maputo, the main city of Mozambique and to gold and platinum mines in South Africa, on timbila music. Timbila is both the name of a musical instrument (xylophone) and of a cultural manifestation, practiced by the Chopi people from Mozambique. It is one of the most documented music and dance cultures in Mozambique and was proclaimed as a masterpiece of the oral and immaterial heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2005. The oldest references by Father Andre Fernandes date from the 16th century. However, the most well-known timbila sources were written and recorded by Hugh Tracey, the founder of the International Library of African Music (ILAM), from 1940s. All these sources were based on traditional timbila music. None refers to contemporary timbila music, which is a mixture of timbila with Western musical instruments. The research is thus based on both historical and is new research to understand the role of the phenomena mentioned above to the reinterpretation of timbila music over the time. - Description: This is a case study conducted in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA), Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape. Against the backdrop of identifying and conceptualising ethically oriented leadership competencies, the purpose of this study was to explore service as a leadership competency. The literature reviewed in this research underscored the importance of effective and ethical leadership, but critiqued the Westernised, individualistic orientation of the conceptualisation of service as a leadership competency. Based on a review of the literature, this study proposes that when African leaders are in leadership four components of Ubuntu are involved when they exercise service as a leadership competency. These components are collective consideration, collective compassion, community server and Ubuntu humility. The main aim of this study is to investigate if leaders display these four components when exercising service towards their followers, and if so, how, and why they do so. A conceptual framework of components of Ubuntu, which culminated in research themes and propositions, were produced from the literature chapter. A qualitative research method was adopted in this study in which eight participants were selected through convenience sampling for this case study. One minister and seven Vice-Presidents of various organisations in the Methodist Church were interviewed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection and a deductive thematic analysis approach was employed to analyse data. Also, the critical incident technique (CIT) was utilised to structure interview questions, which is best fitting to solicit complex and comprehensive data from the interviewees. In its findings, the study confirmed the presence of the four components of Ubuntu, but several delimitations and limitations are acknowledged. Nevertheless, the study has made some contribution to understanding the display of service as a leadership competency in an African context. Perceptions of teachers on the implementation of positive learner discipline: A case study of three primary schools in the Amathole-West Education District

- Description: The aim of this study was to gain an insight into perceptions of teachers on the implementation of positive learner discipline in three primary schools in the Amathole- West Education District. The study was in the interpretive paradigm and adopted a qualitative approach in the collection of data. A case study design through face-to-face interviews and document analysis related to positive discipline were used for data collection. Three schools were selected through purposive sampling. Four teachers per school participated in the study and these were purposively sampled. Data from the findings were thematically presented and analysed by scrutinizing it for commonalities. The study revealed that teachers had ample knowledge on positive learner discipline and therefore tried to implement it to the best of their abilities. The study also established that teachers perceived positive discipline as a good approach for disciplining learners. Participants were aware that positive learner discipline made learners feel and that it assisted them to improve and sustain good behaviour. Data revealed that schools used different strategies to implement positive learner discipline, such as, class rules, rewards and awards, personal relationship with learners, role model, communication with learners, point system, goal setting, hand-system and sign language, isolated area in front of the classroom, positive attention and guidelines on discipline. In contrast, the study also revealed that a minority of teachers still administered corporal punishment, which is unlawful and traditional. They also applied punitive disciplinary measures. The study concluded that the selected schools encountered various challenges on the implementation of positive learner discipline. These included undisciplined learners, limited involvement and minimal support from the Department of Education (DoE) and limited support from the School Management Team (SMT), uninformed, ignorant and rude parents, lack of parental involvement, parents using punitive measures, no proper training for teachers and parents, overcrowded classrooms and unhappy teachers. As for monitoring and support from the SMT and DoE, the study envisaged that most participants were supported by the SMT, other than the DoE. , Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, 2020
