- Description: Gold nanoparticles (spheres, rods and bipyramids) were synthesized. The nanocrystals were characterized by UV–visible spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The as prepared gold nanoparticles were then conjugated to a quaternized 2,(3)-tetra [2-(dimethylamino) ethanethio] substituted Al(OH) phthalocyanine (complex 1). The conjugation of phthalocyanines with gold nanoparticles resulted in a decrease in the fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. Conversely, an increase in the singlet oxygen quantum yields was observed for the conjugated complex 1 in the presence of AuNPs.

- Description: This paper reports on the synthesis of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) from an activated mixture of iron (II) phthalocyanine, its metal-free derivative and ferric acetate. The powdered mixture was activated by compression into a tablet by applying a force of 300 kN, followed by re-grinding into powder and heating it to high temperatures (1000°C). The activation by compression resulted in more than 50% debundling of SWCNTs as judged by transition electron microscopy. Acid functionalization of the SWCNTs was confirmed by the increase in the D:G ratio from 0.56 to 0.87 in the Raman spectra and the observation of an average of one carboxylic acid group per 13 carbon atoms from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA also showed that the initial decomposition temperatures for the activated and non-activated mixtures to be 205°C and 245°C, respectively. Hence, activation leads to the lowering of the pyrolysis temperature of the phthalocyanines. X-ray diffraction, electronic absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectra were also employed to characterize the SWCNT.

- Description: The effect of cold immobilization and long-distance transport of irradiated Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) on the flight ability of male (?) and female (/) moths, the longevity of male and female moths, and the realized fecundity of mating pairs CIM (chilled irradiated moths) / CIM?, CIM/ NIP (nonirradiated pupae) ?, NIP/ CIM?, and NIP/ NIP? was examined to improve application of the sterile insect technique (SIT). Adult moths treated with 150 Gy of gamma radiation were immobilized with cold temperature between 4 and 6C inside a polyurethane cooler box and transported for 12 h by road from Citrusdal, Western Cape Province, to Addo, Eastern Cape Province. Nonirradiated moths were transported as pupae inside a cardboard tray and removed by hand after which male and female pupae were separated and placed inside containers for eclosion. Male and female moths were individually placed inside petri dishes to determine longevity or paired with irradiated and nonirradiated counterparts to evaluate realized fecundity before incubation in 100% darkness at 25C and 75% relative humidity. Flight tests were conducted indoors at 25C by release of individual moths per hand. A significant decrease in flight ability and longevity of irradiated false codling moth was found after handling, cold immobilization, and transport, although critically, realized fecundity was not affected. Because of the impact of long-distance transport on quality of the released insects as well as the efficacy of SIT, comprehensive protocols for this critical step in the process need to be developed for a pestiferous insect with phytosanitary status such as false codling moth.

- Description: An easily prepared solid state colorimetric probe for detecting the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) was developed. The probe, in the form of an electrospun Nylon−6 (N6) nanofibre with embedded un−functionalized gold nanoparticles (UF−AuNPs) produces a clear colour change in the presence of a DA that is detectable by the naked eye. Characterisation of the nanofibre using UV/vis spectroscopy and electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of the AuNPs in the polymer solution, and that the AuNPs were completely encapsulated within the composite nanofibres before exposure to the analytes. The probe exhibited very high sensitivity towards DA resulting in colour change of the composite fibres from purple to navy blue/black even under low concentrations of DA. The probe was also selective to DA since the colour remained unchanged in the presence of commonly encountered interfering species such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, catechol, epinephrine and norepinephrine. Moreover, the colour change was observed rapid, occurring either immediately on contact with higher concentrations (5 x10−4 M) or within about 3−5 min for the lower concentrations (e.g. 5 x10−7 M). Since this probe does not require the use of any instruments, and is both rapid and stable over time, it can be applied in the field by an inexperienced person.

- Description: The more conventional route to synthesizing asymmetric push-pull phthalocyanines (Pcs) involves pairing electron-donating substituents with electron-withdrawing groups in either an A3B or AB3 manner. In this work, a push-pull system fashioned from a substituent bearing different functional groups was created. Symmetric and asymmetric cobalt and manganese Pcs in which acetaminophen was the dominant substituent were synthesized where the asymmetric analogues bore an alkyne-terminated substituent. These complexes were applied as sensors towards the electro-oxidation of nitrite. In addition to comparing the asymmetric Pcs to the symmetric counterparts, an assessment on the different central metals as well as the method of electrode modification was made. From the studies performed, the results showed that the manganese complexes are generally better suited (more so when clicked on to the electrode) in the electrocatalysis of nitrite with a limit of detection and a catalytic rate values of 2.15 μM and 6.91 × 106 s−1 M−1 being recorded for the asymmetric MnPc.

- Description: This work reports on the photodynamic activity of Zn phthalocyanine-ɛ-polylysine conjugates in the presence of gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) towards the inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The conjugates showed high photoinactivation with ∼6% growth at a drug dose of 3 μM and fluence of 39.6 mW/cm2 for 10 min irradiation time in the presence of silver nanoparticles. The presence of silver nanoparticels from the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC50) studies showed remarkable growth inhibition for the tested conjugates even at low concentrations. The MIC50 was lowest for the conjugate of 3 with ɛ-polylysine at concentrations of less than 0.0058 μM in the presence of AgNPs. The lethal photosensitization of microorganisms has emerged as a promising treatment since bacteria have reduced possibilities of developing resistance to photodynamic therapy.

- Description: The efficiency of [2,9,17,23-tetrakis-(1,6-hexanedithiol)phthalocyaninato]zinc(II) as a photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent was investigated. This compound belongs to the second generation of photosensitizers currently tested for the cellular photo-damage of cancer cells. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phototoxicity of the photosensitizer were assessed. Healthy fibroblast cells and breast cancer (MCF-7) cells were treated with either free phthalocyanine or phthalocyanine bound to either gold nanoparticles or encapsulated in liposomes. Cell viability studies showed the optimum phototoxic effect on non-malignant cells to be 4.5 J cm−2. The PDT effect of the liposome bound phthalocyanine showed extensive damage of the breast cancer cells. Gold nanoparticles only showed a modest improvement in PDT activity.

- Description: In this work, tetrakis(5-hexyn-oxy)Fe(II) phthalocyanine was synthesised in order to perform a click reaction between the terminal alkyne groups and an azide group on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. An azide group was formed on the electrode surface following electrografting using 4-azidobenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate by electrochemical reduction. The Cu(I) catalyzed alkyne-azide Huisgen cycloaddition reaction was then employed in order to react the terminal alkyne groups on the phthalocyanine with the azide groups on the GCE surface. The modified electrode was employed to catalyse the oxidation of hydrazine. The electrode showed good electrocatalytic ability towards the detection of hydrazine with a sensitivity of 15.38 µA mM−1 and a limit of detection of 1.09 µM.

- Description: Electrocatalytic behavior of 4-(4,6-diaminopyrimidin-2-ylthio) phthalocyaninato cobalt(II) (CoPyPc) when mixed or covalently mixed to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is reported. Infra-red spectroscopy was used to confirm amide linkage of the covalently linked nanocomposite. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) and cyclic (CV) voltammetry studies were used for the electrochemical characterization of the prepared phthalocyanine and MWCNT nanocomposite. The electrocatalytic effects of the nanocomposites of the cobalt phthalocyanine derivative were then investigated towards L-cysteine oxidation using both RDE and CV experiments, and the electrocatalytic performance of the covalently linked cobalt phthalocyanine-MWCNT was found to be superior over the mixed nanocomposite.

Physical characterization techniques such as UV-vis, X-ray photoelectron, electron paramagnetic resonance and infra-red spectroscopy were used. Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and rotating disk electrode were used for electrochemical characterization of electrodes modified with the prepared phthalocyanine and its nanocomposites. The electrocatalytic effect of a new iodine-doped cobalt phthalocyanine derivative supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes was then investigated towards oxygen reduction reaction. The electrocatalytic activity of the iodine-doped cobalt phthalocyanine was found to be superior in terms of current over the undoped phthalocyanine nanocomposite.

- Description: The reaction of Zn(OAc)2 and C6H5COOH or 3,5-NO2-C6H3COOH with 3-ferrocenylpyrazolyl-methylenepyridine (L1), 3-ferrocenyl-5-methylpyrazolyl-methylenepyridine (L2), 3-ferrocenylpyrazolyl-ethylamine (L3) and 3-ferrocenyl-5-pyrazolyl-ethylamine (L4) afford the corresponding complexes [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L1)] (1), [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L2)] (2), [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3COO)2(L1)] (3), [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3 COO)2(L2)] (4), [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L3)] (5), [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L4)] (6), [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3COO)2(L3)] (7) and [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3COO)2(L4)] (8). These complexes behave as catalysts for the ring opening polymerization of e-caprolactone to produce polymers with molecular weight that range from 1480 to 7080 g mol1 and exhibited moderate to broad PDIs. Evidence of these complexes acting as catalysts was obtained from both the polymerization data and kinetic studies. The polymerization data show that variation of the [CL]/[C] from 100 to 800 produced PCL with relatively the same molecular weight indicative of a catalyst behavior. The appearance of induction period in kinetic plots strengthens the fact that these complexes are catalysts rather than initiators. MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR data show di-hydroxy end groups, which support the coordination mechanism rather than insertion mechanism. To understand the broad PDIs obtained for some of the polymer, the electronic properties of the zinc complexes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The results show that the zinc complexes containing amine based ligands are highly electrophilic therefore making them unstable, hence the broad PDIs observed for zinc complexes containing amine based ligands. Among the eight complexes investigated, complex 7 is the most active catalyst with kp value of 1.18 107 h1 mol1 at 110 C.

- Description: The present study shows improved photodynamic therapy (PDT) effect of zinc mono carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnMCPPc (1)) upon conjugation to spermine (via amide bond) as a targeting molecule on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The ZnMCPPc-spermine (2) conjugate was adsorbed onto single walled carbon nanotubes (represented as ZnMCPPc-spermine-SWCNT (3)). There was no change in the fluorescence quantum yield of complex 1 following formation of 2 or 3. Complexes 2 and 3 showed improved photophysical properties; with over 50% increases in triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields compared to 1. Complexes 1, 2 and 3 were relatively not toxic to MCF-7 cancer cells when incubated with 5–40 μM of each complex for 24 h in the dark. The PDT results showed that at 40 μM complex 1 resulted in only 64% decrease in cell viability, while 2 and 3 improved the PDT effect of 1 to 97% and 95% decrease in cell viability at 40 μM respectively.

- Description: The photophysical properties of the conjugate of uridine and zinc mono carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnMCPPc–uridine, 4) are reported in this work. The conjugate was also adsorbed onto single walled carbon nanotubes (ZnMCPPc–uridine–SWCNT, 5). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of 4 showed three N 1s peaks while that of 5 showed four N 1s peak, a new peak at 399.4 eV of 5 was assigned to pyrrolidonic nitrogen, due to the interaction of the pyrrolic nitrogen of 4 with the oxygen moiety of SWCNT–COOH in 5. The triplet lifetime, triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields of the zinc mono carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanine increased by over 40% in the presence of uridine. SWCNTs resulted in only a small quenching of the triplet state parameters of 4.

- Description: Zinc phthalocyanine bearing four ascorbic acid units (formed via ester bond between zinc carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines and ascorbic acid) was synthesized and characterized using different spectroscopic methods. The complex (with or without ascorbic acid) was further adsorbed onto single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and further characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The photophysical properties of the complexes were studied. The synthesized complex showed better photophysical properties when compared to the carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines alone, this is evident in the increase of the triplet quantum yields (ΦT), triplet life-times (τT) and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ). The zinc phthalocyanines bearing ascorbic acid showed improved triplet life-times even in the presence of SWCNTs.

- Description: Zinc mono carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanine (1) was chemical modified with ascorbic acid via an ester bond to give ZnMCPPc-AA (2). Complexes 2 and 1 were coordinated to single walled carbon nanotubes via π–π interaction to give ZnMCPPc-AA-SWCNT (3) and ZnMCPPc-SWCNT (4) respectively. Complexes 2, 3 and 4 showed better photophysical properties: with improved triplet lifetimes and quantum yields, and singlet oxygen quantum yields when compared to 1 alone. The photodynamic therapy activities of complexes 1, 2, 3 and 4 were tested in vitro on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Ascorbic acid suppresses the photodynamic therapy effect of 1, due to its ability to reduce oxidative DNA damage as a result of its potent reducing properties. The highest phototoxicity was observed for 4 which resulted in 77% decrease in cell viability, followed by 3 which resulted in 67% decrease in cell viability. This shows the importance of combination therapy, where the phthalocyanines are the photodynamic therapy agents and single walled carbon nanotubes are the photothermal therapy agents.

- Description: Cadmium based quantum dots (QDs) capped with two different ligands (thioglycolic acid, TGA, and glutathione, GSH) were synthesized. The QDs are: CdTe, CdTe/ZnO, CdTeSe, CdTeSe/ZnO and CdSe/ZnS (the last one for TGA only). Cytotoxicity of the QDs against MCF-7 epithelial breast cancer was evaluated. The TGA capped core QDs were found to be highly cytotoxic to the cell lines when compared to GSH capped ones. The glutathione capped QDs were covalently linked to zinc tetracarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnTCPPc). Cytotoxicity and photophysicochemical properties of the conjugates were investigated. The toxicity of the core QDs was reduced in the presence of ZnTCPPc. Enhanced triplet quantum yields and long triplet lifetimes were obtained for ZnTCPPc in the presence of all QDs.

The toxicity of the core QDs was reduced in the presence of ZnTCPPc. Enhanced triplet quantum yields and long triplet lifetimes were obtained for ZnTCPPc in the presence of all QDs.
