  • Description: Rhodes Centenary issue , The small University of Rhodes (6142 students), in the rural city of Grahamstown, was established in 1904 as a result of a £50 000 grant from the Rhodes Trust in Oxford. It grew out of St Andrew’s College, which provided the first four professors and 41 students. The first paper from Rhodes in the South African Journal of Science (then called the Report of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science) was by Selmar Schonland, one of the university’s founding fathers. Entitled: ‘Biological and ethnological observations on a trip to the N.E. Kalahari’, it appeared in 1904. The following pages provide a glimpse into the growth and achievements of various departments in the faculties of Science and Pharmacy and associated institutes a century after the university was born.

  • Description: Developing countries face challenges in the development of infrastructure and population growth. These lead to “side-effects" such as uncontrolled urbanization and the fact that basic services such as water and sanitation are lagging behind the actual needs on the ground. Historical challenges, lack of skilled staff and often lack of sustained funding are some of the reasons for the status quo. Extent of water and sanitation coverage often forces national and local governments to install the minimum-standard solutions, e.g. the ventilated improved pit latrines. This improves the public health status in the short-term, but causes problem in the long run due to the lack of regular maintenance such as through lack emptying of pits. Sometimes, construction of these facilities is of inferior standard. Pits are often built without lining or zero consideration is given to the local conditions in terms of soil properties, water table and the number of toilet users.

  • Description: Newspaper article: "Cycads, South Africa's precious living fossils, are being stolen and sold to smart-set gardeners in South Africa, Japan and the United States reports The Daily News. Plants of one rare species, Encephelatus Woodii, have been offered for sale in the United States for R5 000. Botanists say cycads sell for R26 a centimeter overseas, so that a waist-high plant fetches about R2 500. Cycads are very slow-growing. Plants germinated 12 years ago at the Natal Botanical Gardens have a stem the size of a small football. Hence plants of a reasonable size may be hundreds of years old, while the rootstock from which the plants grow may be thousands of years old. There are 28 species in South Africa and seven occur in Natal. They are known in Afrikaans as Broodboom (bread tree) because Hottentots were said to make bread from the pith, after it had been left to rot for two months. A spokesman for the Natal Parks Board said the authorities could not prevent exploitation. Convictions for removing protected plants were difficult to obtain as it was almost impossible to prove where the plants came from unless the culprits were caught red-handed. When found to be in illegal possession, plants ere confiscated and planted out.Miss Jane Baxter, Natal Parks Board public relations officer, dwarfed by a giant cycad, Encephelatus Natalensis. This small patch of what can best be described as Woodland/ Forest by virtue of its hybrid condition as influenced by man's chopping activities down the years, lies at the head of what is called Grootkloof on this farm, and is the last patch of such forest up this otherwise dry valley in which the lower slopes receive a much lower precipitation than the upper heights under which the patch of forest persists by virtue of the extra moisture it receives from passing cloud. This meeting was attended by workers from different factories all over the Peninsula. Comrades from the regional and national executive of Sactwu, including comrades Ebrahim Patel and Lionel October. They came to stop the Campaign for a militant Sactwu. The comrades from the Campaign did not oppose their attendance to discuss how Sactwu can be built into a fighting union. The intervention of the leadership resulted in chaos at the start of the meeting.

Those that attended raised a number of cosmetic obstacles on the issue, just short of saying they were not interested in the process. The discussions with the participating employers collapsed last month. This therefore lives us with no option but to accept the challenge that the employers are imposing on us.
