Iodine nutrition status in Africa: Potentially high prevalence of iodine deficiency in pregnancy even in countries classified as iodine sufficient

  • Description: Objective: To assess the burden of iodine deficiency in pregnancy in Africa using estimated pregnancy median urinary iodine concentration (pMUIC). Design: pMUIC for each African country was estimated using a regression equation derived by correlating the school-age children (SAC) median UIC (mUIC) and pMUIC from countries around the globe, and the SAC mUIC data for African countries obtained from the Iodine Global Network (IGN) 2017 and 2019 Score cards. Setting: Iodine deficiency was endemic in many African countries before the introduction of iodine fortification, mainly through universal salt iodisation programmes about 25 years ago. There is a scarcity of data on the level of iodine nutrition in pregnancy in Africa. Women living in settings with pMUIC below 150 μg/l are at risk of iodine deficiency-related pregnancy complications. Participants: Fifty of the fifty-five African countries that had data on iodine nutrition status. Results: A cut-off school age mUIC ≤ 175 μg/l is correlated with insufficient iodine intake in pregnancy (pregnancy mUIC ≤ 150 μg/l). Twenty-two African countries had SAC mUIC less than 175 μg/l, which correlated with insufficient iodine intake during pregnancy (pMUIC less than 150 μg/l). However, nine of these twenty-two countries had adequate iodine intake based on SAC mUIC. Conclusions: There is likely a high prevalence of insufficient iodine intake in pregnancy, including in some African countries classified as having adequate iodine intake in the general population.   • Description: Wing‐moult of the Cape Glossy Starling, Red‐winged Starling, Pale‐winged Starling and Pied Starling was examined primarily from speci-mens in southern African museums. Breeding data were obtained from nest record cards. The Cape Glossy Starling breeds from October to March, with the moult period from December to May. There is no evi-dence of moult‐breeding overlap in individual birds. The Red‐winged Starling breeds from September to March, while the moult takes place between November and April, overlapping with the second broods. The Pale‐winged Starling breeds from October to April and moults between November and May. The Pied Starling moults between November and April, while breeding varies regionally, occurring concurrently with moulting in some areas.

Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 45 , Pogonophryne platypogon is described from a 61.0 mm SL juvenile specimen collected near Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. This species belongs to the dorsally spotted group of Pogonophryne but is distinguished from other known species of the group in having a smoothly flattened terminal expansion on the mental barbel and a very narrow snout and jaws (jaw width less than 13% SL). It also has a very narrow interorbital region (less than 5% SL).

  • Description: The possibility of an effect of zinc on the rate of tumour cell division, mediated through a regulation of cellular cAMP concentration, was investigated in the present study in rats. Dietary Zn deficiency (< 1·5 mg Zn/kg) but not Zn excess (500 mg Zn/kg) resulted in an increased cAMP concentration in transplanted hepatoma cells. Neither treatment had any effect on the cAMP concentration in regenerating liver or normal resting liver. Both the deficient and excess Zn diets resulted in a small reduction in tumour growth (not statistically significant). The results seem to indicate that the relation investigated in the present study does not apply in the cell line used.

  • Description: The Northern Cape Region of Potwa held a very vibrant regional congress in Vryburg on the 15 & 16 April 1989. The Congress was characterised by a spirit of comradely self-criticism. This political maturity of the comrades went as far as to give a proper critical analysis of the structures of our organisation. The analysis accepted that the functioning of some of our organisation’s structures is not up to standard. The congress also noted that the participation of the general membership in the activities of the organisation is not satisfactory. As it is typical of matured comrades, the congress realised that such problems are not peculiar to Potwa. Shortcomings such as these are indicative of a huge and growing organisation. Because of this, the comrades explored ways and means of solving these problems. The congress concluded that the opening of a regional office combined with effective usage of our Potwa newsletter would go a long way in solving some of our problems.

Role of agricultural marketing in transforming subsistence agriculture: African Case Study

  • Description: A lack of agricultural marketing facilities is generally seen as one of the major obstacles to agricultural development. However, subsistence producers in southern Africa are influenced by certain exogeneous factors, such as competition from commercial production, the well-developed marketing system, and off-farm employment opportunities in South Africa. This paper studies the effect of the institution of an organized marketing system in Ciskei on the level of agricultural production. This is found to have had no significant effect because the majority of the able-bodied males are working in the metropolitan areas of South Africa. This has resulted in agriculture becoming a part-time supplementary activity for women, old men, and children in the rural areas.
