- Description: Riparian vegetation plays several roles in ecological functioning, such as improving water quality because it can filtrate the sediments and provides stability on the floodplain. The condition of riparian vegetation can serve to provide information regarding river condition. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which water quality level of the Keiskamma River can be explained by the riparian vegetation density patterns. This study used Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) satellite image to assess spatial patterns in riparian vegetation condition. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was generated from the Sentinel-2 imagery and was used as the base from which riparian vegetation density classes were obtained through the supervised image classification technique. The image classification accuracy assessment was caried out to verify and validate the accuracy of riparian vegetation density classes. This technique produced the overall accuracy (OA) classification of 83.72 percent. The riverine water quality parameters were measured on the randomly surveyed sites using the Premium Series PC60 5-in-1 Water Quality Tester. High density of riparian vegetation were found in the upper course of the river. The low-density riparian vegetation dominates the middle course of the river while the lower part of the river contains a mixture of the three riparian vegetation conditions. The one-sample t-test statistical technique was carried out to determine the spatial pattern of water quality parameters. The t-test results revealed the significant variation in water pH, with the p-value of 0.00. However, t-test results also showed insignificant variations in water Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and electrical conductivity (EC), with p-values of 0.117 0.059 and 0.059 respectively. The linear regression was used to determine the relationship between riparian vegetation and water quality. In this case, the NDVI values were used as surrogate for riparian vegetation condition. The results showed insignificant relationships between NDVI and water pH (r2 = 0.00), NDVI and water TDS (r2 = 0.09), and NDVI and water EC (r2 = 0.09) along the Keiskamma River. In view of the findings obtained from this study “spatial differences in riparian vegetation along the lateral and longitudinal dimensions of the Keiskamma River denote spatial variations in water quality levels”, is rejected. , Thesis (MSci) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2022

- Description: Accessibility to healthcare refers to the availability, or the provision of healthcare-byhealthcare professionals and stakeholders and individuals' ability to obtain care and treatment. It affects overall physical, social, and mental health; disease and disability prevention; detection and treatment of health conditions; standard of living; preventable death; and life expectancy, and it is crucial to the performance of health care systems around the world. If healthcare services are available and are in sufficient supply, people will be able to seek health care, and a population will have access to services. The leading cause of death globally is Tuberculosis (TB) and South Africa is amongst the top 5 countries most affected by TB. This is aggravated by high HIV/AIDS statistics. Children belowthe age of 4, between the ages of 4- 15, and women and men of working ages are highly affected by TB and it is the primary cause of death in these groups in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District. This study used study tools like Spatial Modelling, Geographic Information Systems and software like ArcGIS 10.5, TerrSet IDRISI 18.30, and secondary data from the North West Departmentof Health (Tier.net &DHIS) and also TB patients’ home addresses to investigate the accessibility of TB treatment in Ngaka Modiri Molema, in order to spatially visualize the distribution of a communicable disease like TB and public healthcare facilities in the Ngaka Modiri Molema (NMM) District and suggest optimum sites for hospital facilities. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 2022

- Description: Developing countries, especially those in the Sub-Saharan African region are still marked with high and increasing rate of unemployment. To counter this, countries in the African countries introduced the Special Economic Zones programme in the 1970s which proliferated during the 1990s to date. However, there is scant academic literature on the role of SEZs’ contribution to job creation. Against this background, this study investigated the contribution of the SEZs to job creation in the SSA region in general and South Africa in particular. A mixed method approach was used wherein the qualitative data focused on the South Africa and the quantitative data focused on SSA in general. In-depth interviews with key informants in four operational SEZs and DTI in South Africa were complimented with document reviews and direct observation. Inductive thematic analysis was also used to analyse qualitative data, while the Panel Corrected Standard Errors was used to analyse the qualitative data. The results show that SEZs have made a positive contribution to job creation in South Africa. This contribution is constrained, inter alia, by stringent visa regulations, an ineffective one-stop-shop model, reliance on government funding and the lag between the signing and operation of investments. Nevertheless, incentives and support services seem to counteract some of these challenges. Similarly, the SEZs have a positive contribution to job creation in SSA. However, this impact has been largely insignificant. , Thesis (MCom) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce, 2020

- Description: The African continent is facing unprecedented population growth in the 21st century. Most of this growth will be absorbed by urban areas where the overall population is projected to triple from presently appr. 400 people to 1.3 billion people in 2050 (UN-Habitat, 2014). In sub-Saharan Africa, which is the focus of this Special Issue, not only the number of megacities with more than 10 million such as Lagos will rise, but smaller or medium sized cities will attract most of this growth (UN-Habitat, 2014). The majority of this increase is taking place in the form of informal settlements where people are living in poverty and where basic facilities and services such as a secure supply of clean drinking water and safe waste water disposal are missing.

- Description: Peripherally and non-peripherally tetrasubstituted-[(N-methyl-2-pyridylthio)]phthalocyaninato magnesium (II) (5 and 6) and chloro aluminium (III) (7 and 8) tetraiodide have been synthesized and characterized. The photophysical properties of the complexes in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and aqueous medium in the presence and absence of cremophore EL have been studied. These complexes show high solubility in aqueous medium though they were aggregated. The triplet state quantum yields (FT) and the triplet lifetimes (tT) were found to be higher in DMSO with ΦT ranging from 0.32 to 0.51, while tT ranged from 282 to 622 ms in DMSO, compared to aqueous medium (pH 7.4 buffer) where ΦT ranged from 0.15 to 0.19 and tT from 26 to 35 ms. Addition of cremophore EL in aqueous solution resulted in partial disaggregation and increased photoactivity. The fluorescence lifetimes of the complexes showed strong dependence on their immediate environment. The ionic magnesium(II) and aluminium(III) phthalocyanines strongly bind to bovine serum albumin (BSA).

- Description: The interaction between iron(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine ([FeIITSPc]4+) and histamine results in the oxidation of the central metal by oxygen in the former, with the formation of a complex denoted as [(His)FeIIITSPc]3− (where His = histamine). The rate constant for the formation of the complex is kf = 2.41 × 10−2dm3.mol−1.s−1 and an equilibrium constant of 6.3 dm3.mol-1 was obtained. The oxidation state of the central metal of [FeIITSPc]4− before and after the coordination of histamine is confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry. Further electrochemical oxidation of this [(His)FeIIITsPc]3− derivative results in a metal-based process proposed to involve an FeIV phthalocyanine species.

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis of novel unsymmetrically substituted magnesium phthalocyanine complexes containing one carboxyl group. The physicochemical behavior of these complexes were compared with those of their unmetallated and zinc counterparts. The MgPcs showed interesting absorption spectra with [8,15,22-Tris-(naphtho)-4,5-(3-carboxy-1,2-dioxyphenyl)phthalocyaninato]magnesium (II) showing a large split in the Q band whereas [8,15,22-Tris-(naphtho)-2-(carboxy) phthalocyaninato]magnesium(II) presented only a small splitting. The magnesium phthalocyanine derivatives displayed higher fluorescence quantum yields compared to unmetallated and zinc phthalocyanine counterparts. The latter gave admirable triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields. These molecules can distinctly be employed in the field of photodynamic therapy in combination with fluorescence imaging.

- Description: The interactions and spectroscopic properties between cationic zinc phthalocyanine derivatives (peripherally and non-peripherally tetrasubstituted and peripherally octa substituted with 2-diethylmethylaminoethylsulfanyl (βTZnPc, αTZnPc and βOZnPc)) and CdTe core quantum dots (QDs) capped with mercaptopropionic acid or thioglycolic acid (represented as CdTe@MPA and CdTe@TGA, respectively) have been studied in methanol:water mixture. Strong coupling of MPcs was deduced from the interaction since the UV–vis spectroscopic studies of the ground state complex formed on mixing both components showed loss of the phthalocyanine monomeric band with the formation of a dimeric band (spectrum of aggregated species). The dimerization constants were of the order of 104 M−1.

- Description: Sulfonated OTiPc(S)n and (Cl3)TaPc(S)n complexes are prepared and characterised by spectroscopic methods in DMSO, methanol and PBS 7.4. The dominant sulfonated species was the disulfophthalocyanine. OTiPc(S)n is highly aggregated in PBS 7.4 solution and tends to partially monomerise, on addition of Triton X-100, while (Cl3)TaPc(S)n showed broadened spectra in all solvents and was not affected by Triton X-100. The absorption and excitation spectra of OTiPc(S)n are similar and are mirror images of their emission spectra in DMSO, but differ in PBS and methanol. The fluorescence quantum yields (ϕF) and lifetimes (τF) were larger in DMSO than in methanol. In PBS 7.4, however, the ϕF and τF values were significantly smaller for OTiPc(S)n, which is typical of aggregated species. Gradual addition of the electron-acceptor MV2+ to solutions of MPc(S)n complexes resulted in the fluorescence quenching of complexes with higher quenching observed for OTiPc(S)n. The interaction of the MPc(S)n complexes with MV2+, and hence the stoichiometry and association constants are evaluated by means of Job method.

Conjugation of nanoparticles increased triplet state and singlet oxygen quantum yields of the phthalocyanines as well as enhancing photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) activity against bacteria (S. aureus). The ZnPc derivative showed higher PACT activity when compared to the InPc, possibly due to degradation of the latter in aqueous media.

- Description: An in-depth study of the electronic structure of a 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) induced molecular self-assembled xanthene-bridged and amide-bonded porphyrin dimer is reported. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations are used to identify trends in the optical spectroscopic properties. B3LYP geometry optimization predicts the formation of an almost perfectly eclipsed structure with respect to the two porphyrin rings with the analogous pyrrole nitrogens separated by 7.7–8.1 Å. The observed distinctive derivative-shaped band morphology of the pseudo-Faraday-A11 terms in the MCD spectra has been used to identify the main electronic Q and B-bands and to validate the TD-DFT calculations. The absence of a discernible splitting of the redox steps or a quenching of the fluorescence demonstrates that there is no significant exciton coupling between the two porphyrin rings.

- Description: Spectroscopic studies were carried out on the homoaggregates of negatively charged free base meso-tetraphenylsulfonated porphyrin ([H2TPPS4]4−) and heteroaggregates of a mixture of protonated ([H4TPPS4]2−) and tin meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphyrin ([SnTMPyP]4+). The spectroscopic studies were done to determine the optimal conditions required for the fabrication of porphyrin nanorods by ionic self assembly of two oppositely charged porphyrins. In addition, the various spectral changes of [H4TPPS4]2− with concurrent change in pH and concentration are also investigated. In acid media at pH more than 3, and at concentrations less than 1 × 10−5 M, [H4TPPS4]2− molecules form J aggregates. A mixture of [H4TPPS4]2− and [SnTMPyP]4+ forms heteroaggregates of the J type in acid media. At pH’s 2 to 3, the optimum ratio for the formation of J aggregates is 3:1 and for pH 1, the optimum ratio is 2:1. Transmission electron microscope images of the nanostructures formed show that they are of cylindrical shape.

- Description: The interaction of histidine, cysteine, NO and nitrite with cobalt(II) N,N',N″,N‴-tetramethyltetra-3,4-tetrapyridinoporphyrazine ([CoIItmtppa]4+) is reported. Metal-based autoreduction of [CoIItmtppa]4+ occurs with the formation of the [CoItmtppa(-2)]3+ species in the presence of histidine and cysteine. Kinetic data for the auto reduction of [CoIItmtppa]4+ in the presence of these amino acids gave the rate constants kf = 2.1 × 101 and 2.8 dm3 mol-1 s-1, for cysteine and histidine, respectively. One molecule of NO or nitrite was found to coordinate to the [CoIItmtppa]4+ species. The equilibrium and rate constants for the coordination of the nitric oxide were K = 2.3 × 104dm3mol-1 and kf = 7.5 dm3mol-1s-1, respectively. The coordination of nitrite to [CoIItmtppa]4+ occurred with an equilibrium constant of K = 2.0 × 102dm3mol-1 and a rate constant of kf = 4.0 × 10-3dm3mol-1s-1. There was no evidence for the coordination of two molecules of nitrite to the [CoIItmtppa]4+ species.
