How taboo are taboo words for girls?

- Description: In the past five years, there has been much interest in the question of whether women are really as concerned about politeness and status as they have been made out to be by such writers as Baroni and D'Urso (1984), Crosby and Nyquist (1977), Lakoff (1973), Spender (1980), and Trudgill (1972). Despite the commonly held perception that it is only males who bandy about derogatory and taboo words (Bailey 1985; Flexner 1975), Risch (1987) provided counterevidence based on data obtained in the United States. The results of the present study, based on data obtained in South Africa, strongly support her findings and challenge the assumption that women stick to standard speech, citing evidence that young females are familiar with, and use, a wide range of highly taboo/slang items themselves. In particular, attention is devoted to the question of pejorative words applicable to males and females, respectively, and the view that there are only a few pejorative terms commonly used to describe males (particularly by females) is challenged. (Women's language, politeness, linguistic taboo, stereotypes, slang, expletives, prestige forms).

The COSATU National Office Bearers have produced a document titled "COSATU 1993 Discussion Paper on a Way Forward". It deals with the "Reconstruction Accord". This Accord is a plan for organised labour during this period of transition in South Africa. Since this plan is laying the foundations for a future South Africa, the COSATU document is therefore a plan for the future of the working class. In this short paper we are going to answer the most important questions concerning this COSATU document: Is this the way forward for the workers? Is this plan going to free the workers from the chains of poverty and suffering? Is this plan going to lay the foundations for workers control of the economy, of politics and of the country? Is this plan going to stop retrenchments and starvation wages? In other words, we are going to study the COSATU leadership 's proposals from the point of view of the needs of the workers.

- Description: School guidance and counselling services ought to be designed and implemented to meet the needs of the pupils. The high school guidance programme should operate in a preventive way and attempt to equip pupils with information, skills and attitudes so that they can successfully negotiate the challenges of adolescence. If school group guidance lessons are to meet the pupils' needs and are to be experienced by the pupils as being relevant to their lives, then they must address the expressed needs of the pupils (apart from other issues considered important by appropriate authorities). A methodological approach to defining such needs is presented. It emphasises the importance of the pupils themselves describing their needs, and seeks to avoid the pupils having to respond in the form of ticks and checklists to the ideas of others. The pupil protocols were analysed in a qualitative manner and a number of categories and themes emerged. The needs relating to careers are outlined. Discussion centres on these results, on the differences between schools, and on the implications of these findings for a future single, non-racial education department in South Africa with a common curriculum for all.
