- Description: This work describes the electrochemical properties of low symmetry cobalt phthalocyanines namely, tris-[(4-tert-butylphenoxy)-4-(pent-4-yn-1-yloxy) phthalocyaniato] cobalt (II) (3) and tris-[(4-tert-butylphenoxy)-4-(4-ethybylbenzyl-oxy) phthalocyaniato] cobalt (II) (5). The complexes were characterized by a number of techniques including UV–Vis, mass, and infrared spectra, as well as elemental analysis. The glassy carbon electrodes were first azide functionalized then clicked to low symmetry phthalocyanines. The click reaction was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectra. The constructed electrodes showed excellent electrocatalytic activity towards hydrazine oxidation. Oxidation peaks with low potentials of 0.21 V and 0.26 V, for complexes 3 and 5, respectively were obtained. Complex-5 gave a better detection limit of 0.94 μM and electrocatalytic rate constant of 5.6 × 106 M−1 s−1.

- Description: In this article, we report on the linking of cobalt tetrakis (4-pentyn-oxy) phthalocyanine (CoTPPc) to ZnO nanoparticles via click chemistry. Subsequently, electrocatalytic activity and nonlinear optical properties were investigated (the latter using an open Z-scan technique at 532 nm). The linking of CoTPPc with ZnO resulted in the lowest limiting intensity value of 0.27 J.Cm−2, the βeff (cmW−1) values were found to be 1.51 × 10-8 and 7.10 × 104 for ZnO and CoTPPc-ZnO respectively. The catalytic rate constants (M−1s−1) (and limits of detection) were 4.1 × 104 (12.87 µM), 5.7 × 104 (8.62 µM) and 7.36 × 104 (4.35 µM) for ZnO, CoTPPc and CoTPPc-ZnO. Hence linking ZnO nanoparticles to CoTPPc result in the enhancement of both nonlinear optical behaviour and catalytic activity.

- Description: New symmetric {tetrakis [4-(4-(5-chloro-1Hbenzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) phenoxy phthalocyaninato] Co (II) (CoTPc)} and low symmetry {tris tert butyl phenoxy mono [4-(4-(5-chloro-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) phenoxy phthalocyaninato]} Co (II) (CoMPc) were successfully synthesised and combined with reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS) for electrocatalytic detection of hydrazine. Prior to electrocatalysis, the probes were characterised using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Chronoamperometry was used to determine catalytic rate constant and the limit of detection (LOD). CoMPc-rGONS gave catalytic rate constant and LOD of 1.37×106 M 1 s 1 and 0.82 μM respectively, rendering it a more suitable probe for hydrazine, due to low symmetry.

- Description: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has disrupted socio-economic activities, including formal and non-formal education, across the world at lightning speed. By mid-April 2020, it had interrupted the formal education of nearly 1.6 billion students in 192 countries. COVID-19’s disruption of education in Africa, and especially in southern Africa, has been severe for several reasons. However, educational responses to COVID-19 suggest that it has stimulated the appetite for developing educational innovations – silver linings to the COVID-19 cloud. This paper is based on interviews conducted with 56 parents, students and educators involved in formal and non-formal education in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. We identified the main educational challenges in these countries as being concerned with adapting to: (i) online education and learning, (ii) continuity of education from home, and (iii) community-based learning in small groups. The silver linings that we identified are: (i) putting greater emphasis on finding context-specific solutions to education and health problems (improvisation), which is important for educational relevance and reveals the value of local actors, (ii) making linkages between social and ecological systems clearer, which is making the value of education for sustainable development (ESD) in this century more explicit, and (iii) revealing structural inequality and justice issues in education, which draws attention to the need for urgently addressing them as part of transformative change in education and sustainable development.

- Description: Pereskia aculeata Miller (Cactaceae) is an invasive alien cactus which has negative impacts on indigenous plant biodiversity in South Africa. Catorhintha schaffneri Barilovsky and Garcia (Coreidae), the pereskia stem-wilter, was collected at coastal sites in the subtropical region of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil and released as a biological control agent to control P. aculeata, in South Africa, in 2014. The introduced distribution of P. aculeata covers a wide variety of climatic conditions which was expected to influence the establishment success of the new agent. The thermal tolerance of C. schaffneri was investigated by developing a degree-day model and calculating the thermal limits of the species. The influence of humidity on egg hatchability and adult survival was also investigated. These data were then used to determine where the agent was likely to establish in South Africa using both weather station and microclimate temperature data. To ground-truth these predictions, sixteen release sites were selected covering a wide range of climatic conditions in the introduced distribution. Three releases of 30 adult C. schaffneri were conducted at each site and population establishment was recorded. Field establishment was recorded at only two of the sixteen experimental release sites. Low winter temperatures were predicted to prevent establishment at seven of the sixteen sites, but nine sites were considered climatically suitable according to the agent’s thermal physiology. Low rainfall and humidity could explain why the agent did not survive at some sites with suitable thermal climates. Many of the thermally suitable sites were affected by a severe drought over the course of the experiment, so further releases during periods with average rainfall and humidity are warranted and could confirm whether the drought was a significant factor influencing the failure of the agent to establish. Although climatic-matching and thermal physiology studies are valuable for tentative predictions of establishment success, there are numerous variables involved that require ground-truthing. Releasing the agent over a wide range of climatic zones believed to be within the thermal limits of the agent, and following releases with detailed post-release evaluations may be the best method of determining where future releases should be focused.

- Description: Universities have used an array of incentives to increase academic publications, which are highly rewarded in the South African higher education funding formula. While all universities use indirect incentives, such as linking promotion and probation to publication, the mechanisms used in some institutions have taken a very direct form, whereby authors are paid to publish. This process has paralleled a large rise in publication outputs alongside increased concerns about quality. Significantly, there are ethical questions to be asked when knowledge dissemination is so explicitly linked to financial reward through the payment of commission to academics. Based on an analysis of institutional policies and data from an online survey and interviews with academics from seven South African universities, we argue that when money is the main means used to encourage academics to contribute to knowledge, numerous unintended consequences may emerge. These include a focus on quantity rather than the quality of research, a rise in predatory publishing, and resentment among academics. We argue that incentives, in particular direct payment for publications, undermine the academic project by positioning publications in terms of exchange-value rather than their use-value as a contribution to knowledge building.

- Description: The degradation of rifampicin (RIF) in an acidic medium to form 3-formyl rifamycin SV, a poorly absorbed compound, is accelerated in the presence of isoniazid, contributing to the poor bioavailability of rifampicin. This manuscript presents a novel approach in which isoniazid is formulated into gastric-resistant sustained-release microspheres and RIF into microporous floating sustained-release microspheres to reduce the potential for interaction between RIF and isoniazid (INH) in an acidic environment. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate and Eudragit® L100 polymers were used for the manufacture of isoniazid-loaded gastric-resistant sustained-release microspheres using an o/o solvent emulsification evaporation approach. Microporous floating sustained-release microspheres for the delivery of rifampicin in the stomach were manufactured using emulsification and a diffusion/evaporation process. The design of experiments was used to evaluate the impact of input variables on predefined responses or quality attributes of the microspheres. The percent degradation of rifampicin following 12 h dissolution testing in 0.1 M HCl pH 1.2 in the presence of isoniazid gastric-resistant sustained-release microspheres was only 4.44%. These results indicate that the degradation of rifampicin in the presence of isoniazid in acidic media can be reduced by encapsulation of both active pharmaceutical ingredients to ensure release in different segments of the gastrointestinal tract, potentially improving the bioavailability of rifampicin.

- Description: This paper reports on the third order nonlinear optical properties of cobalt, nickel and tetrakis(4- terbutylphenoxy)phthalocyaninatocopper(II) isomers, using the Z-scan technique. Metal-free isomers were found to have high nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) values compared to the metalated isomers. Metal-free C2v isomer was found to have the highest β value of 1.52 × 10− 10 mMW− 1 in THF. All the metal-free and metal phthalocyanine isomers nonlinear properties were found to be dependent on the singlet state absorption. Imaginary second order nonlinear hyperpolarizability (Im[γ]), ground state cross section (σg), excited states cross sections (σs and σt) and two photon absorption (TPA) cross section (σTPA) values are reported in this work. The five-energy level model rate equations were used to model the nonlinear response and absorption cross sections.

- Description: Background: Cities are at the fore of sustainability challenges of the twenty-first century, and many, particularly in Asia and Africa, are predominantly youthful spaces. Understanding young people's experiences in urban environments is therefore important as we strive to achieve both the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. Two amenities identified in the urban Sustainable Development Goal 11, transport and public and green space, are specifically recognised as applying to youth. Yet, there is little analysis that explicitly considers how youth experience these amenities across the Global North and South, and no current measures for understanding progress in youth experiences of green space and transport. Results: This paper provides a comparative analysis of young people's experiences with local transport and green space in seven diverse urban communities (Christchurch, New Zealand; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Lambeth/London, UK; Makhanda, South Africa; New Delhi, India; São Paulo, Brazil; and Yokohama, Japan). Our study contributes to a growing body of literature that seeks to listen to child and youth perspectives to understand their environmental experiences. We examine the 'affordances' young residents aged 12 to 24 years currently associate with green space and transport amenities. Affordances are defined here as the inter-relationships between what a local environment offers young people and their perceptions and actions. Drawing on focus groups and interviews conducted with 332 young people, we identify five affordances young people associate in relation to transport and public space across these diverse urban settings: (1) social inclusion and belonging; (2) autonomy; (3) physical comfort and security; (4) relaxation and reflection; and (5) health and fitness. Conclusions The paper contributes to growing interdisciplinary research interest in measuring affordances as a way to advance the Sustainable Development Goals in an urban context. In providing a comparative account of young people's experiences across diverse contexts, our discussion highlights how affordances in relation to transport or public and green space can help understand the multiple interconnections between the well-being of young people and sustainability. In particular, we argue that it is not merely the provision of transport or public and green space that matters, but the nuanced meaning of places and experiences as understood by local communities that needs to be recognised if we are to better support urban youth wellbeing and advance sustainable development goals.

- Description: An inclusion complex of isoniazid-grafted phthalocyanine with gamma-cyclodextrin (Complex) was co-encapsulated with rifampicin (RIF) in crude soybean lecithin liposomes using a heating method. The encapsulation efficiency (%EE) of the Complex-RIF co-loaded liposomes (Rif-Complex-Lips) was determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Rif-Complex-Lips formulations were evaluated using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 1H-NMR, absorption and emission spectroscopy. Dialysis was used for drug release study in two different media, pH 6.4 and 7.4. HeLa cells were used to assess potential cytotoxicity, and the uptake by lung fibroblasts and epithelial cells was investigated using fluorescence microscopy. The particle size and Zeta potential of Rif-Complex-Lips were approximately 594 nm and –50 mV. Spectroscopic analyses demonstrated molecular distribution of the cargo within the lipid core, and encapsulation efficiency of 58% for Complex and 86% for RIF. TEM analysis unveiled the existence of spherical nanoparticles in our samples, indicating the presence of liposomes. Rif-Complex-Lips exhibited much higher release rates for both INH and RIF at pH 6.4 compared to those tested at pH 7.4. In addition, there was no cytotoxicity on HeLa cells, but remarkable Rif-Complex-Lips internalization by peripheral lung fibroblasts and epithelial cells. Hence, Rif-Complex-Lips are promising vehicles for intracellular delivery of antimicrobial drugs.

- Description: Tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl-thio) phthalocyaninato] gallium(III)chloride (1) and tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2ylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato] gallium(III)chloride (2) were successfully electrodeposited onto aluminium for corrosion retardation in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. The aim of this study was to compare the corrosion resistance of electrodeposited metallated phthalocyanines. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and polarization confirmed the aluminium corrosion inhibition potentials of complexes 1 and 2. EIS and polarization techniques showed that complex 2 performed better than complex 1, with values from EIS measurements of 82% for 1 and 86% for 2 in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. The importance of electrodeposition in industries and a dearth of research on the use of electrodeposited metallated phthalocyanines necessitated this study, and results show that coatings formed by electrodeposition of 1 and 2 onto aluminium reduced its susceptibility to corrosion attack.

- Description: This work entails the study of electronic and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of two synthesized Schiff bases namely 3-(((2-methyl-4-nitrophenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (MMP) and 3-(((2,4-dinitrophenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (DMP). Electronic absorption properties studied using UV–Visible spectrophotometry in ethanol reveal low-energy absorption indicating a low band gap. Time-dependent density functional calculations on their excited state properties with ωB97X-D/6-311++G(d,p) method show comparable transition energies and intensities with the experimental results. Energy gaps (ΔE) and NLO properties were evaluated from the frontier orbitals and hyperpolarizabilities (βtot and γ) in gas, cyclohexane and ethanol. Low ΔE obtained shows the potentials of the systems as organic semiconductor with remarkable band gap stabilization in ethanol. Higher βtot and γ than urea imply that the Schiff bases possess potentials for NLO applications. The solvatochromic shift in transition energies and perturbation of electronic properties reveal the solvent dependence of the electronic and optical properties of MMP and DMP due to solute-solvent interactions.

- Description: In this study, solvent dependence of electronic and nonlinear optical properties of a new Schiff base, 2-(((5-aminonaphthalen-1-yl)imino)methyl) phenol (DANOHB), has been investigated. Electronic and optical properties of the Schiff base studied using Uv-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques in solution show that the Schiff base exhibits fluorescence with a quantum yield of 0.21 and a Stokes shift of 39 nm. Quantum chemical calculations were performed on the Schiff base at time-dependent density functional level of theory using Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr method with 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. Solvent dependence of the excited state energies (EE), energy gap (ΔE), first-order (β) and second-order (γ) hyperpolarizabilities were studied in gas, cyclohexane and ethanol. The medium perturbed the energy levels which implies that the reactivity, activity and stability of the system are solvent sensitive. The γ is more than thirty times higher than urea (standard NLO material) and this property is further enhanced in less polar medium. Small ΔE and large hyperpolarizabilities obtained for this system suggest its good potential in photonics and nonlinear optical devices.

- Description: Antiretroviral therapy remains the most efective means of managing the human immune defciency virus/acquired immune defciency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Application of therapeutics has been hampered by factors including poor bioavailability of most anti-retroviral compounds (ARV), side efects and an alarming emergence of drug resistant strains of the virus. Recent developments and use of drug delivery systems (DDS) has shown potential for improving the pharmacological profle of ARV. Amongst these complex DDS, liposomes have been explored for delivery of ARV. In this study, we have aimed at exploring efcient encapsulation of efavirenz (EFV), a potent ARV using diferent mass ratios of crude soybean lecithin and cholesterol. The EFV-loaded liposomes (EFL) were prepared using thin flm hydration and evaluated for particle size, zeta potential (ZP), encapsulation efciency (EE%), morphology and drug release studies. Diferential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray difraction (XRD), energy dispersity spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used for comprehensive physicochemical characterization of EFL. EFL exhibited high encapsulation (99%) in 1:1 crude lecithin to cholesterol mass ratio. The average particle size and Zeta Potential of EFL were found to be 411.10±7.40 nm and −53.5.3±0.06 mV, respectively. EFL showed a relatively controlled EFV release behaviour that was similar to the dissolution profle of un-encapsulated EFV. This suggests that EFL represents a promising vehicle for efective EFV delivery while providing the advantages of a nano-scaled delivery system

- Description: The nanophotosensitizers based on acetophenoxy tetrasubstituted metallophthalocyanines (MPc) and detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) were successfully formed and their photophysicochemical properties were determined. The zinc(II)Pc and indium(III)Pc complexes along with their nanoconjugates were found to have high singlet oxygen quantum yields (0.72 − 0.84) associated with the heavy central metal effect. The ability of the functional groups present on the DNDs to bind to the bacteria cell and the improved solubility of the nanoconjugates due to DNDs resulted in effective photodynamic antimicrobial therapy (PACT) activity against S. aureus planktonic cells, with the highest log reduction of 9.72 ± 0.02 for the conjugate of InPc conjugate with DNDs after 30 min irradiation. PACT studies were investigated at a dose of 10 μg/mL for each sample. The results suggest that the readily synthesized nanoconjugates can be used as appropriate PACT agents.

The complexes and conjugates exhibited high singlet oxygen ranging from 0.20 to 0.79 in DMSO for Pcs and nanoconjugates where in all cases, the indium complexes showed the highest singlet oxygen quantum yields. The photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy activity of both phthalocyanines and nanoconjugates were tested against Staphylococcus aureus. 4@GQDs was found to be highly effective causing a 9.68 log reduction of the bacteria at 10 μM (based on Pc) when compared to 3.77 log reduction of 3@GQDs.

- Description: Microbial mats were the dominant habitat type in shallow marine environments between the Palaeoarchean and Phanerozoic. Many of these (termed ‘microbialites’) calcified as they grew but such lithified mats are rare along modern coasts for reasons such as unsuitable water chemistry, destructive metazoan influences and competition with other reef-builders such as corals or macroalgae. Nonetheless, extant microbialites occur in unique coastal ecosystems such as the Exuma Cays, Bahamas or Lake Clifton and Hamelin Pool, Australia, where limitations such as calcium carbonate availability or destructive bioturbation are diminished. Along the coast of South Africa, extensive distributions of living microbialites (including layered stromatolites) have been discovered and described since the early 2000s. Unlike the Bahamian and Australian ecosystems, the South African microbialites form exclusively in the supratidal coastal zone at the convergence of emergent groundwater seepage. Similar systems were documented subsequently in southwestern Australia, Northern Ireland and the Scottish Hebrides, as recently as 2018, revealing that supratidal microbialites have a global distribution. This review uses the best-studied formations to contextualise formative drivers and processes of these supratidal ecosystems and highlight their geological, ecological and societal relevance.
