- Description: Iron polychlorophthalocyanine (FePc(Cl)₁₆) and tetrasulfophthalocyanine ([M¹¹TSPc]⁴) complexes of iron, cobalt and manganese are employed as catalysts for the oxidation of cyclohexane using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), chloroperoxybenzoic acid (CPBA) and hydrogen peroxide as oxidants. Catalysis using the FePc(Cl)₁₆ was performed in a dimethylformamide:dichloromethane (3 :7) solvent mixture. For the [Fe¹¹TSPc]⁴⁻, [Co¹¹TSPc]⁻ and [Mn¹¹TSPc]⁴⁻catalysts, a water:methanol (1:9) mixture was employed. The products of the catalysis are cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanediol. The relative percentage yields, percentage selectivity and overall percentage conversion of the products depended on types of oxidant, or catalyst, concentrations of substrate or catalysts and temperature. TBHP was found to be the best oxidant since minimal destruction of the catalyst and higher selectivity in the products were observed when this oxidant was employed. Of the four catalysts investigated [Fe¹¹TSPc]⁴⁻ yielded the highest overall percentage conversion of 20%.The mechanism of the oxidation of cyclohexane in the presence of the FePc(Cl)₁₆ and [M¹¹TSPc]⁴⁻ involves the oxidation of these catalysts, forming an Fe(IlI) phthalocyanine species as an intermediate. Electrocatalysis using [Co¹¹TSPc]⁴⁻ as catalyst, employed an aqueous pH 7 buffer medium for electro-oxidation of 4-pentenoic acid. An enone is suggested as the only oxidation product of 4-pentenoic acid. No degradation of [Co¹¹TSPc]⁴⁻ was observed during the electrocatalytic process. In this process water was used as a source of oxygen therefore eliminating the production of by products from oxidant as in the case of TBHP and CPBA. This system was studied In an attempt to set up conditions for alkane electrocatalytic oxidation.

- Description: A series of BODIPY dyes functionalised with boronic acid in the 3,5-positions were successfully synthesised and characterised by using various analytical techniques. The dyes were prepared through a slight modification of the conventional acid catalysed condensation method. Phenylboronic acid moieties were added as styryl groups at the 3,5-positions of the 1,3,5,7-tetrametylBODIPY cores using a modified Knoevengal condensation method. The addition of the styryls resulted in the main absorption band of the dyes red-shifting to the 630−650 nm region. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these dyes were studied to determine whether the dyes are suitable for use in the fluorescent, colourimetric and electrochemical detection of glucose. Boronic acid moieties were added as bioreceptor recognition elements because they have an affinity for carbohydrates and therefore would be able to bind and “detect” glucose. The series of BODIPY dyes did not show a “turn-on” fluorescence effect upon addition with glucose at the physiological pH. This was attributed on the basis of molecular modelling to the absence of an MO localised on the boronic-acid-substituted styryl moieties that lie close in energy to the HOMO and LUMO that facilitates the formation of an intramolecular charge transfer state. However, colourimetric changes that are visible to the naked eye are observed at basic pH when glucose was added to the dye solutions. The dyes exhibited favourable electrochemical behaviour and were able to detect glucose directly in this context when glassy carbon electrodes are modified through the drop dry method. A series of Sn(IV) porphyrins with thienyl and phenyl groups at the meso-positions were successfully synthesised and characterised. Pyridine and tetrabutyl axial ligands were added to the porphyrins to limit aggregation. The optical limiting properties of these porphyrins and three styrylated BODIPY dyes were studied in benzene and dichloromethane. Dyes were also embedded in polystyrene and studied as thin films to further gauge their suitability for use in optical limiting applications. Second-order hyperpolarizability, third-order susceptibly, non-linear absorption with reversible saturable absorption and the optical limiting threshold, were the parameters studied. Three of the four porphyrins and the three styrylated BODIPY dyes showed favourable optical limiting behaviour, which was further enhanced when the dyes are embedded in polymer thin films.

- Description: A series of structurally related BODIPY dyes were synthesised and characterised. Their photophysical properties were studied in order to determine whether they would be suitable candidates for use as photosensitisers in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment of cancer. The synthesis of two highly fluorescent BODIPY cores was achieved via the acid-catalysed condensation of a pyrrole and a functionalised aldehyde. In order to promote intersystem crossing, and hence improve the singlet oxygen generation of these dyes, bromine atoms were added at the 2,6-positions of the BODIPY core. These dibrominated analogues showed good singlet oxygen quantum yields, and excellent photostability in ethanol. In order to red-shift the main spectral bands of the BODIPY dyes towards the therapeutic window, vinyl/ styryl groups were introduced at the 3-, 5-, and 7-positions via a modified Knoevengal condensation reaction. The addition of vinyl/ styryl groups to the BODIPY core caused an increase in fluorescence quantum yield as well as a decrease in singlet oxygen quantum yield with respect to the dibrominated analogues. However, two of the red-shifted BODIPY dyes still showed moderate singlet oxygen quantum yields. The use of BODIPY dyes in nonlinear optics (NLO) was explored. The nonlinear optical characterisations and optical limiting properties of a series of 3,5-dithienylenevinylene BODIPY dyes were studied, both in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution and when embedded in poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBC) as thin films. The 3,5-dithienylenevinylene BODIPY dyes showed typical nonlinear absorption behaviour, with reverse saturable absorption (RSA) profiles, indicating that they have potential as optical limiters. The second-order hyperpolarizability (Y), and third-order nonlinear susceptibility (/m[/(3)]) values are also reported for these dyes. The optical limiting values of one of the BODIPY dyes in solution, and two of the BODIPY-embedded PBC films, were below the maximum threshold of 0.95 J-cm-2. The effect of addition of substituents on the electronic structure of the BODIPY dyes was investigated using TD-DFT calculations. The calculated trends closely followed those determined experimentally.

- Description: Syntheses, spectral, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies of new thiol-derivatised MPc complexes were satisfactorily carried out. For the first time, spectroelectrochemistry gave evidence for the formation of Ni²⁺/Ni⁺ process in a NiPc complex. Significant insights as to the nature of Fe⁺Pc and Ni⁺Pc spectra were obtained. Transformations of chlorophenols using chemical and photochemical methods are presented. For cobalt tetrasulphophthalocyanine catalysed oxidation of chlorophenols using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant, types of oxidation products formed depended on the solvent conditions. Photolysis of aqueous solutions of chlorophenols in the presence of immobilised non-transition metal phthalocyanine photosensitisers onto Amerlite® was carried out. For the first time, MPcS[subscript mix] complexes were immobilised on Amberlite® for use in heterogeneous photocatalysis. Photolysis of the chlorophenols resulted mainly in the formation of chlorobenzoquinone derivatives. The generation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) by these immobilised MPc photosensitisers was found to play a major role in their photoactivities. Modifications of gold electrodes with the newly synthesised thiol-derivatised MPc complexes via electropolymerisation and SAM techniques are presented. Cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy (NiPcs only) and spectroelectrochemical techniques (NiPcs only) confirmed that the complexes formed films on gold electrodes. Stable and well packed SAM films as evidenced by the voltammetric characterisation were obtained. For the first time, optimisation of the time for SAM formation based on CV technique was studied. First example of a formation of MnPc-SAM was achieved. Catalytic activities of the NiPc towards chlorophenol depended on the nature of the NiPc in the polymer films and also anti-fouling ability of the films depended on polymer film thickness. The FeTBMPc polymer modified gold electrode showed the best catalytic activity in terms of peak potential, E[subscript p] when compared to reported work in literature for nitrate electrooxidation. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroscopy studies showed that the CoPcs, FePcs and NiPcs catalysed nitrite oxidation involve 2 electrons in total while that of McPcs involve 1 electron. Better catalytic performance towards sulphite electrooxidation were obtained for the CoPcs, FePcs and MnPcs which have metal based redox processes within the range of the sulphite electrooxidation peak while the NiPcs which did not show metal based oxidation reaction performed less.

- Description: Electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation of nitric oxide (NO) using cobalt phthalocyanine complexes have been studied and compared to vitamin B₁₂ and other metallophthalocyanine (MPc) complexes. Modifying a glassy carbon electrode with these complexes resulted in improved sensitivity of the electrode allowing detection of NO to 10⁻⁹ mol dm⁻³. The mechanisms of catalysis were studied. Electrocatalysis of NO involves coordination of NO to the MPc complex. Hence catalytic activity is affected by the nature of the metal center. However coordination of NO to the MPc complex has to be reversible to eliminate poisoning of the electrode. Though FePc gave the best sensitivity and lowered the reduction potential more than CoPc, the strong Fe-NO bond resulted in the poisoning of the electrode hence, rendering the electrode unstable. Rate constants for NO coordination to the MPc complexes were studied. These rates were smaller than the studied NO porphyrin coordination rates. Electrocatalytic reduction of NO using MPc complexes involves a transfer of an electron from the metal center to the NO ligand. Hence, substitution of electron-donating grohps on the cobalt pthalocyanine complex resulted in improved sensitivity and catalytic activity. A CoPc modified microelectrode (11μm) was used to monitor NO in human blood components and to detect NO in a rat brain. Detections of NO were also done in aqueous solutions in the presence of interfering species such as dopamine and serotonin. An interaction between NO and serotonin was observed.

- Description: The voltammetric behaviour of I-cysteine and other organic compounds such as hydrazine, hydroxylamine and methionine has been studied on GCE modified with phthalocyanine complexes of osmium, rhodium and ruthenium. For cysteine oxidation, the catalytic activity of the electrode was dependent the nature of the axial ligand. When cyanide and dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) were used as axial ligands, giving (DMSO)(Cl)Rh(III)Pc, [(CN)₂Rh(III)Pc], (DMSO)₂0S(II)Pc and [(DMSO)₂Ru(II)Pc].2DMSO complexes, the peak current increased with repetitive scanning, indicating the increase in catalytic activity of the electrode after each scan. This behaviour was not observed when pyridine was used as axial ligand. The improvement of the catalytic activity of the GCE after the first scan has been attributed to the formation of the dimeric π-cation radical species at the electrode surface. Water soluble phthalocyanine complex ([(CN)₂Os(II)Pc]²⁻) and the tetramethyltetra-pyridinoporphyrazine complexes of Pd(II) and Pt(II), ([Pd(II)2,3Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺, [Pd(II)3,4Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺, [Pt(II)2,3Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺ and [Pt(II)3,4Tmtppa(-2)⁴⁺) have been prepared. [(CN)₂Os(II)Pc]²⁻ is soluble in water at pH greater 4 without the formation of dimers. The [M(II)Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺ (M = Pd or Pt) show high solubility in water and are stable only in acidic pHs. The cyclic voltammetry of the MPc and [M(II)Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺ complexes prepared, is also reported. The interactions of amino acids I-histidine and I-cysteine with the [M(II)Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺ complexes of Pd(II) and Pt(ll) were studied. All the [M(Il)Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺ are readily reduced to the monoanion species [M(Il)Tmtppa(-3)]³⁻ in the presence of histidine and cysteine. The rate constants for the interaction of [M(Il)Tmtppa(-2)]⁴⁺ complexes ofPt(II) and Pd(II), with histidine and cysteine range from approximately 2 x 10⁻³ to 0.26 dm³ mol⁻¹ s⁻¹. Kinetics of the interaction of [Co(Il)TSPc]⁴⁻ with amino acids, histidine and cysteine in pH 7.2 buffer were studied. The rate constants were found to be first order in both [Co(II)TSPc]⁴⁻ and the amino acid. The formation of [Co(III)TSPc]³⁻ in the presence of histidine occurred with the rate constant of 0.16 dm³ mol⁻¹ s⁻¹, whereas the formation of the [Co(I)TSPc]⁵⁻ species in the presence of cysteine gave the rate constant of 2.2 dm³ mo⁻¹ s¹. The relative quantum yield (QΔ) for singlet oxygen production by [(CN)₂Os(Il)Pc]²⁻, and [(CN)⁴Ru(II)Pc]²⁻ in DMF using diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF) and a chemical quencher were determined. The quantum yield values were obtained as 0.39 ± 0.05 , and 0.76 ± 0.02 for [(CN₂Os(II)Pc]²⁻ and [(CN)₂Ru(II)Pc]²⁻ respectively. The differences in quantum yield values have been explained in terms of donor abilities of both the central metal and the axial ligands.

- Description: Different approaches to surface modification were investigated in this work on gold, glassy carbon, multi-walled carbon nanotube paper and on single-walled carbon nanotubes adsorbed on glassy carbon. These approaches include electrochemical grafting, electropolymerisation, click chemistry, axial ligation, adsorption and self-assembled monolayers. The modified surfaces were characterised using a variety of techniques; predominantly electrochemistry, scanning electrochemical microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For the formation of self-assembled monolayers on gold, four new manganese(III) phthalocyanines (1a-d), octa-substituted at the peripheral position with pentylthio, decylthio, benzylthio, and phenylthio groups were synthesized and characterised. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to show the formation of a sulphur-gold bond. A number of approaches using 4-azidoaniline (2a) combined with azide-alkyne click chemistry and electrochemistry were also used to anchor ferrocene and pyridine moieties on to the carbon surfaces, including direct in situ diazotation and grafting, electropolymerisation, and the synthesis of the diazonium salt followed by grafting. Iron phthalocyanine was linked to the pyridine-clicked surfaces through axial ligation, where the strong axial bond formed by the interaction between the central metal and the lone pair of the nitrogen in the pyridine group resulted in stable modified electrodes. The potential of these surfaces for the detection of analytes such as thiocyanate, hydrazine and sulphite are briefly shown as well. This work also describes for the first time the possibility of performing local micro-electrochemical grafting of a gold substrate by 4-azidobenzenediazonium (2b) using scanning electrochemical microscopy in a single and simple one step approach, without complications from adsorption.

- Description: One form of surface modification was primarily investigated in this work on glassy carbon electrodes. The form of modification is comprised of a series of steps in which electrografting is first applied to the glassy carbon surface, which is then followed up with click chemistry to ultimately immobilise a phthalocyanine onto the surface. The modified glassy carbon electrodes and surfaces were characterised with a combination of scanning electrochemical microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and various electrochemical methods. In this work, three alkyne substituted phthalocyanines were used. Two novel phthalocyanines, with nickel and cobalt metal centres, were studied alongside a manganese phthalocyanine reported in literature. Each of the three phthalocyanines was modified at the peripheral position with a 1-hexyne group, via a glycosidic bond, yielding the terminal alkyne groups that were used for subsequent click reactions. In situ diazotisation was used to graft 4-azidoaniline groups to the surface of the glassy carbon electrode. The azide bearing 4- azidoaniline groups were thus used to anchor the tetra substituted phthalocyanines to the surface of the electrodes. This method yielded successful modification of the electrodes and lead to their application in sensing studies. The modified electrodes were primarily used to catalyse the common agricultural oxidising agent hydrazine.

- Description: This work presents the syntheses, photophysical and photochemical characterization of arylthio zinc phthalocyanines and their gold nanoparticle conjugates. Spectroscopic and microscopic studies confirmed the formation of the phthalocyanine-gold nanoparticle conjugates which exhibited enhanced photophysicochemical properties in comparison to the phthalocyanines. The studies showed that the presence of gold nanoparticles significantly lowered fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. However, this interaction did not restrict the formation of excited singlet and triplet states and hence the formation of singlet oxygen required for photocatalysis. The conjugates showed significantly higher singlet oxygen quantum yields and therefore enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to the phthalocyanines. The zinc phthalocyanines and their gold nanoparticle conjugates were successfully incorporated into electrospun polymer fibers. Spectral characteristics of the functionalized electrospun fibers indicated that the phthalocyanines and phthalocyanine-gold nanoparticle conjugates were bound and their integrity was maintained within the polymeric fiber matrices. The photophysical and photochemical properties of the complexes were equally maintained within the electrospun fibers. The functionalized fibers were applied for the photoconversion of 4-chlorophenol and Orange G as model organic pollutants. , Microsoft Word 2010 , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

- Description: This work presents the syntheses, photophysical and photochemical characterization of zinc tetracarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnTCPPc, 3) and its gadolinium oxide nanoparticle conjugate (4). By means of spectroscopic and microscopic characterization, the conjugation of the ZnTCPPc to the silica coated gadolinium oxide nanoparticles (Si-Gd2O3 NPs, 2) through an amide bond was confirmed. The thermal stability, morphology, nanoparticle sizes and their conjugates with the Pc were studied using ThermoGravimetric Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Conjugation of ZnTCPPc to the magnetic nanoparticles, proved to have a negligible effect on the photophysical parameters of the phthalocyanine, where a slight decrease in fluorescence and triplet quantum yields and lifetimes was observed. The singlet oxygen quantum yield, however, increased slightly upon conjugation, suggesting that the overall efficiency of the ZnTCPPc as a photosensitizer had improved. Physical mixing of the ZnTCPPc and the silica-coated gadolinium nanoparticles also showed an improvement in the singlet oxygen quantum yield and triplet lifetime, also showing an enhanced efficiency for the photosensitizer and therefore photocatalysis. ZnTCPPc (3) alone and the Pc-gadolinium oxide nanoparticle conjugate (4) were therefore electrospun into nanofibers to create a solid support. The fibers were characterized and their diameter sizes and composition was studied confirming the incorporation of the phthalocyanine and gadolinium oxide nanoparticle. Increased singlet oxygen generation resulted in increased Photodegradation of the environmental pollutant Orange G and the fibers were found to be more efficient as photocatalysts compared to the photosensitizer in solution. The nanomaterial may therefore be applied to the photodegradation of Orange G.

- Description: Metallophthalocyanine-single walled carbon nanotube conjugates were successfully synthesized and applied in the electrochemical characterizations of pesticides (amitrole and diuron) and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME). The formation of conjugates was confirmed through the use of the following analytical techniques: UV-vis, FTIR, Raman and XRD spectroscopies, atomic force and transmission electron microscopies and voltammetry. Chemically linking SWCNT to MPcs created platforms that offered efficient transfer of electrons and this was confirmed through electrochemical impedance studies (EIS) and voltammetry as shown by lower ΔEp values observed in conjugates. Carboxy carrying MPcs have very poor electron transfer kinetics (both tetrasubstituted and low symmetry), but the presence of SWCNTs activates their catalysis. All electrochemical studies were done at pH 4. Cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk linear sweep voltammetry, chronoamperometry and EIS were used in the electrochemical characterization of 2-ME and the pesticides on poly-Ni(OH)TAPc and MPc-SWCNT modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs). High Tafel slopes were observed for the pesticides relative to 2-ME, an indication of the passivating nature of their oxidation products. However, conjugates showed very high resistances to passivation and were easily regenerated by shaking in methanol. Improved catalysis of the conjugates is also indicated by the high catalytic rate constants for the analytes, observed on these electrodes. Conjugates of low symmetry MPcs with SWCNTs gave the highest catalytic rate constants, confirming better catalysis on these electrode surfaces. The nature of SWCNT functionalization also affected catalysis, with amine functionalized SWCNTs inducing better catalytic properties into the MPcs than carboxylic acid terminated CNTs. The presence of amine functionalized SWCNTs activates the catalysis of non-catalytic carboxy-carrying MPcs and this is more pronounced in conjugates of tetrasubstituted MPcs relative to those of low symmetry Pcs. Ethylene amine (EA) functionalized SWCNTs reduced redox overpotentials of the MPcs more than the phenyl-amine (PA) functionalized counterparts. Poly-NiTAPc was successfully converted to poly-Ni(OH)TAPc through cyclisation in pH 4 buffer and showed very good catalytic properties towards diuron, relative to the former.

- Description: Some metallophthalocyanine complexes were synthesized and their catalytic activities towards the detection and quantification of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and histamine were investigated. The study of the possible interaction between these transmitter substances and the metallophthalocyanine complexes was undertaken. Dopamine, serotonin and histamine formed complexes with Iron (II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine. The rate and equilibrium constants obtained for the coordination are in the range of values reported in the literature for ligand coordination to iron phthalocyanine complexes. Carbon paste electrodes of millimetric diameters modified with Iron (II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine exhibited good electro catalytic activity towards the detection and analysis of dopamine and serotonin while at the same time eliminated the problem of interference posed by ascorbic acid in the electrochemical analysis of neurotransmitters. A detection limit of the order of 10-6 mol dm-3 was obtained for both dopamine and serotonin at the modified electrodes. Carbon paste ultra micro electrodes modified with iron (II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine were also used for the detection of dopamine and serotonin as well as the simultaneous determination of dopamine and ascorbic acid in a mixture. The detection limit obtained for dopamine at the ultra microelectrode was 4.2xlO-7 mol dm-3 The electrode kinetics of vitamin BI as well as the stability of the electrode towards its determination was improved upon by modifying carbon paste electrodes with manganese phthalocyanine. The modified electrodes were used for the analysis of vitamin BI in tablets.

- Description: Phthalocyanines (Pcs) and porphyrins bearing substituents that possess antibacterial/anticancer properties are used as photosensitizers (PS) for the first time in the work. For targeting specificity and improved photoactivity, the PSs were afterward functionalized with carbon nanomaterials such as graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) via covalent conjugation (amide or ester bonds) or by non-covalent conjugation (π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions). Furthermore, the PSs-DNDs nanoconjugates were conjugated to either chitosan-capped silver nanoparticles (CSAg) via amide bonds or to the bare silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using the silver- nitrogen affinity. The as-synthesized nanoconjugates were also fully characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic methods together with thermal analysis. The potential photocytotoxicity of the complexes alone and their nanoconjugates against S. aureus and/or E. coli planktonic and biofilm cultures has been evaluated in vitro. Compared to the non- quaternized PSs, the cationic analogs exhibited a higher photodynamic inactivation against the planktonic cells with log10 reduction values above 9 in the viable count using a concentration of ca. 1.25 μM following 30 min exposure to light (Light dose: 943 J/cm2 for Pcs and 250 mW/cm2 for porphyrins). Whereas, at a concentration of ca. 100 μM the cationic PSs showed complete eradication of biofilms upon 30 min exposure to light. As a result of conjugation to carbon-based nanomaterials and silver nanoparticles, the compounds proved to be more effective as they exhibited stronger antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities on the multi-drug resistant bacteria strains due to synergetic effect, compared to PSs alone. This suggests that the newly prepared nanohybrids (PS concentration ca. 100 μM) could be used as potential antimicrobial agents in the treatment of biofilm-related infections. The target nanoconjugates showed all the advantages of two different groups existing on a single entity. In light of the potential advantages of combined chemotherapy and photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT), this work reports for the first time the use of PACT-ciprofloxacin (CIP) dual therapy using selected indium quaternized PSs which showed higher photoactivity with complete eradication of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria biofilms at concentrations of 8 μM of PS versus 2 μg/mL of the antibiotic following 15 min irradiation time (light dose: 471 J/cm2 for Pcs and fluence: 250 mW/cm2 for porphyrins) on S. aureus. Whereas the total killing of E. coli was obtained when combining 8 or 16 μM of PS combined with 4 μg/mL of CIP. The combined treatment resulted in the complete eradication of the matured biofilms with the highest log10 reduction values of 7.05 and 7.20 on S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Used as a model, positively charged dimethylamino-chalcone Pcs also exhibited interesting photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity against MCF-7 cancer cells giving IC50 values of 17.9 and 7.4 μM, respectively following 15 min irradiation. Additionally, the TD-B3LYP/LanL2DZ calculations were run on the dimethylaminophenyl- porphyrins to compare the singlet excitation energies of quaternized and non-quaternized porphyrins in vacuo. the study shows excellent agreement between time-dependent density- functional theory (TD-DFT) exciting energies and the experimental S1>S0 excitation energies. The small deviation observed between the calculated and experimental spectra arises from the solvent effect. The excitation energies observed in these UV-Vis spectra mostly originated from electron promotion between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) for the less intense band and the HOMO-1 for the most intense band of the ground states to the lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the excited states. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Chemistry, 2022

- Description: The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and studies of the photophysicochemical behaviour of selective anionic, cationic and neutral metallophthallocyanine (MPc) complexes were carried out and the results are presented herein. Studies on the effect of the central metal ion, the solvent used and the presence of nanoparticles on the photophysicochemical properties were conducted. The findings showed that the photophysicochemical parameters were mostly enhanced in the presence of central metal ions of high atomic numbers and also in the presence of nanoparticles. It was also observed that solvents that encouraged the monomericity of the MPc complexes also lead to improved photophysical and photochemical behaviour. CdTe quantum dots (QDs) stabilized with mercaptocarbonic acids were also observed to cause stimulated emission of the MPcs through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) thus acting as energy donors while the respective MPc acted as energy acceptors in all the FRET studies. FRET was observed following the photoexcitation of QDs for all monomeric anionic MPcs but it was also shown to occur for some cationic MPcs in organic media. Both the substituent and solvent used were found to exert a strong influence on the occurrence of FRET. Other cationic MPcs however showed different behaviour in the presence of the meraptocarbonic stabilized CdTe QDs; with the cationic porphyrazine giving clear indications of Pc ring reduction. The rest of the cationic MPcs did not give clear evidence of Pc ring reduction, instead they showed signs of aggregate formation possibly from the assembly of electrostatic ion pair complexes which could result in reduction of the quaternized pyridinium ring of the substituent. Both the QDs and the MPc complex emission spectra were significantly quenched for each in the presence of the other. Stern-Volmer quenching studies indicated that both static and dynamic quenching of the QDs in the presence of MPcs took place. The fluorescence lifetimes of the mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) capped CdTe QDs in the presence of various MPc complexes showed quenching of mostly the longer lifetimes of the QDs in the presence of MPcs suggesting that the surface defects and states are involved in the interaction of the QDs and MPcs. An MPc complex terminating in thio tethers was employed in the conjugation to AuNPs. Spectroscopic and microscopic studies confirmed the formation of the MPc-AuNP conjugate which was also shown to exhibit improved photophysicochemical properties compared to the free MPc.

- Description: Various characterization techniques have been used to characterize the synthesized asymmetrical zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPc) derivatives. Techniques include Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry, matrix assisted laser desorption time of flight mass spectrometry (MALD-TOF MS), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), elemental analysis and Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR). The complexes are covalently linked to core/shell and core/shell/shell semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs) via amide bond formation. Photophysical properties of complexes improved in the presence of semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs). SQDs contain cadmium/telluride (CdTe) as core, coated in the first shell with zinc selenide (ZnSe) or zinc sulfide (ZnS) and with zinc oxide (ZnO) in second shell. The photophysical properties of the phthalocyanine (Pc) complexes and their conjugates with SQDs are investigated in solution. Triplet quantum yields of complexes improved in the presence of semiconductor quantum dots. The optical limiting behaviour of the Pc complexes and conjugates are assessed using the open aperture Z–scan technique at laser excitation wavelength of 532 nm with 10 ns pulse. Pcs complexes showed good nonlinear optical response with higher nonlinear absorption coefficient. The conjugates afforded higher nonlinear absorption coefficient than Pc complexes alone.

- Description: In this work, the syntheses and characterisation of Zn monocaffeic acid tri–tert–butyl phthalocyanine (1), Zn monocarboxyphenoxy tri– tert–butylphenoxyl phthalocyanine (2), tetrakis phenoxy N,N-dimethyl-4-(methylimino) phthalocyanine indium (III) chloride (3) and tetrakis N,N-dimethyl-4-(methylimino) phthalocyanine indium (III) chloride (5) are presented. Complexes 3 and 5 were further quartenised with 1,3- propanesultone to form corresponding complexes (4) and (6), respectively. Complexes 1 and 2 were covalently linked to amino functionalised nanoparticles (NPs). Complexes 3, 4, 5 and 6 where linked to oleic acid/oleylamine capped (OLA/OLM) silver-iron dimers (Ag-Fe3O4 OLA/OLM) and silver-iron core shell (Ag@Fe3O4 OLA/OLM) NPs via interaction between the nanoparticles and the imino group on the phthalocyanines. The phthalocyanine-NP conjugates afforded an increase in triplet quantum yields with a corresponding decrease in fluorescence quantum yield as compared to the phthalocyanine complexes alone. Complexes 3, 4 and their conjugates were then used for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy on E. coli. The zwitterionic photosensitiser 4 and its conjugates showed better efficiency for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy compared to their neutral counterparts.

- Description: Various axially substituted Silicon octaphenoxyphthalocyanines were synthesised as potential photosensitisers in the photodynamic therapy of cancer. Conventional reflux reactions were used for synthesis as well as new microwave irradiation reactions, wherein the reaction times were decreased tenfold with a marginal increase in reaction yield and product purity. An interesting series of oligomeric (dimer to a nonamer) silicon octaphenoxyphthalocyanines were also successfully synthesised in a reaction similar to polymerisation reactions. These compounds were found to undergo an axial ligand transformation upon irradiation with red light (> 600 nm) in dimethylsulphoxide solution. All the ligands were transformed into the dihydroxy silicon octaphenoxyphthalocyanine with varying degrees of phototransformation quantum yields ranging in order from 10⁻³ to 10⁻⁵ depending on the axial ligand involved. During and after axial ligand transformations a photodegredation of the dihydroxy silicon octaphenoxy phthalocyanine was observed upon continued irradiation. The oligomers were found to undergo the same axial ligand transformation process with a phototransformation quantum yield of 10⁻⁵ The singlet oxygen quantum yields of the unaggregated monomeric silicon octaphenoxy phthalocyanines were all found to be approximately 0.2 with the exception of a compound with two (trihexyl)siloxy axial substituents that had a singlet oxygen quantum yield of approximately 0.4 in dimethylsulphoxide solutions. The oligomers showed a surprising trend of an increase in singlet oxygen quantum yield with an increase in phthalocyanine ring number up to the pentamer and then a dramatic decrease to the nonamer. The triplet quantum yield and triplet lifetime were determined by laser flash photolysis for selected compounds and no correlation was observed with any of these properties and the singlet oxygen quantum yields. These selected compounds all fluoresce and a very good correlation was found between the fluorescence lifetimes determined experimentally by laser photolysis and the Strickler-Berg equation for the non-aggregated compounds. Electrochemical measurements also indicate the importance of the axial ligands upon the behaviour of the phthalocyanines as cyclic voltammetric behaviour was determined by the nature of the axial ligand.

- Description: In this work a selection of octasubstituted phthalocyaninato Zinc, Ge(IV) and Sn(IV) complexes were synthesized for possible use in photodynamic therapy and their photochemistry, photophysics and electrochemistry studied. Third-generation complexes containing steroids, e.g. cholesterol and estrone, were synthesized to improve tumour selectivity. The zinc phthalocyanine complexes (ZnPc) showed that complexes containing electron-donating groups have higher photostability. Germanium phthalocyanine complexes (GePc) undergo phototransformation rather than direct photobleaching and the tin phthalocyanine complexes (SnPc) undergo photobleaching mediated by photoreduction of the phthalocyanine ring. Singlet oxygen production showed increased in the following order: GePc>SnPc>ZnPc. Triplet lifetimes of the GePc (168-340μs) are very similar to that of the ZnPc (197 - 366μs), but the triplet lifetimes of the SnPc are ten fold shorter (10 - 32μs ). Triplet quantum yields are higher for the GePc (0.20 - 0.50) and SnPc (0.08 - 0.45) than for the ZnPc (0.02 - 0.25). Fluorescence lifetimes of GePc ( 4.0 - 5.1 ns) are significantly longer than that of ZnPc (1.9 - 3.0 ns) and SnPc (0.2 - 0.4 ns). Fluorescence quantum yields decrease in the following order: GePc(0.21-0.31)>ZnPc(0.02-0.21)>SnPc(0.02- 0.06). Ring-substituted cobalt phthalocyanine complexes of the form CoPc(R)4 (R= NH2, N02, C(CH3)3, S03H and COOH) are compared for their catalytic activities towards the oxidation of cysteine. The potential for the electrocatalytic oxidation of cysteine is closely related to the Com/Co11 couple of the CoPc(R)4 complexes in acidic media and to the Con/Co1 couple in basic media. The catalytic current and the oxidation potential for cysteine are dependent on the pH of the solution, the potential becoming less positive and the currents increasing with increase in pH.

- Description: The influence of metal porphyrins in electro-oxidation of hydrazine is explored. A series of symmetric and asymmetric porphyrins alone and in the presence of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are employed in this work. Tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin, manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin, manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin--GQDs, and manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin@GQDs are the symmetric porphyrins. The asymmetric porphyrin and composites are 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins, manganese 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins, cobalt 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins, manganese 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins--GQDs, and cobalt 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins--GQDs. These complexes were synthesized and characterized accordingly and applied for electrocatalysis. The electrocatalytic experiments were carried out using glassy carbon electrode and the modification was through drop-dry method. The porphyrin and GQDs synthesized were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The modified electrodes were characterized using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical Impedance spectroscopy. The introduction of metal ion in the center of the porphyrin improved electrocatalysis. The presence of push-pull substituents in the porphyrin lowered the oxidation potential and improved the catalysis. The presence of GQDs improved catalysis in both symmetric and asymmetric porphyrin compared to individual components. Cobalt porphyrins showed better activity than manganese porphyrin. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Chemistry, 2022

- Description: Three types of electrodes: carbon paste electrodes modified with nanoparticles of metallophthalocyanines (MPcNP-CPEs, M = Mn, Fe, Ni, Co), basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrodes modified with iron or nickel phthalocyanine nanoparticles and multiwalled carbon nanotube composites (FePcNP/MWCNT-BPPGE or NiPcNP/MWCNT-BPPGE),and basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrodes modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes and electropolymerized metal tetra-aminophthalocyanines (poly-MTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGE), where M is Mn, Fe, Ni or Co, were prepared. Electrochemical characterizations showed that faster electron transfer kinetics occurred at the NiPcNP/MWCNT-BPPGE than at the FePcNP/MWCNT-BPPGE surface. SEM and electrochemical characterizations of poly-MTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGE showed that MTAPc had been deposited on the MWCNTBPPGE surface, and that the poly-CoTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGE exhibited the fastest electron transfer kinetics of all the poly-MTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGEs. Using amitrole and asulam as test analytes, electrochemical experiments showed that, amongst the CPEs, the FePcNP-CPE and NiPcNP-CPE displayed the most electrocatalytic behavior towards amitrole and asulam oxidation, respectively, and further experiments were done to obtain the electrochemical parameters associated with these electrodes and the corresponding analytes. Although, the FePcNP/MWCNT- BPPGE displayed electrocatalytic behavior towards amitrole oxidation in comparison with the bare BPPGE, it was less electrocatalytic than the FePcNP-CPE in terms of detection potential. The NiPcNP/MWCNT-BPPGE displayed the same detection potential as the NiPcNP-CPE. The poly-FeTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGE exhibited the most electrocatalytic behavior towards amitrole, of all the electrodes investigated, and the poly-CoTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGE displayed the best electrocatalytic behavior towards asulam, amongst the poly-MTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGEs.
