- Description: Zn octacarboxy phthalocyanine-reduced graphene oxide or graphene oxide conjugates were characterized by absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermo gravimetric analysis and X-ray photon spectroscopy. The presence of reduced graphene oxide or graphene oxide resulted in the quenching (turn on) of Zn octacarboxy phthalocyanine fluorescence which can be explained by photoinduced electron transfer. Zn octacarboxy phthalocyaninereduced graphene oxide or graphene oxide conjugates “turned on” fluorescence showed a linear response to hydrogen peroxide hence their potential to be used as sensors. The nanoprobe developed showed high selectivity towards hydrogen peroxide in the presence of physiological interferences.

- Description: This work reports on the electrooxidation of nitrite using Co(II), Fe(II) and Mn(III) tetrakis (benzylmercapto) and tetrakis (dodecylmercapto) phthalocyanines electrodeposited onto a gold electrode. Good catalytic activity (in terms of lowering overpotential) was obtained for these molecules when compared to previously reported MPc catalysts. The catalytic current was found to vary linearly with nitrite concentration in the range employed in this work (0.1–1 mM) and high sensitivities ranging from 6.9 to 9.9 μA mM−1 were observed for all the modified electrodes.

- Description: Photooxidations of bisphenol A and 4-chlorophenol were carried out in this study using two asymmetric indium(III) phthalocyanines photosensitizers: the first consisting of one quaternized 4-pyridyloxyl and no other substituents (complex 1) and the second containing three quaternized 4-pyridylsulfanyl units and one aminophenoxy (complex 3). The asymmetry of complex 3 is additionally caused by the presence of two linking atoms (O and S). The symmetrically substituted indium(III) phthalocyanine containing four quaternized 4-pyridyloxyl units (complex 2) was also studied. The complexes were embedded in electrospun polystyrene fiber for heterogeneous photocatalytic transformation of 4-chlorophenol and bisphenol A. When immobilized on electrospun fibers, complexes 1, 2 and 3 gave singlet oxygen values of 0.31, 0.39 and 0.50 in water, respectively. Complex 3 showed the best photocatalytic behavior with observed rate constants of 2.8 × 10−3 min−1 for bisphenol A and 3.8 × 10−3 min−1 for 4-chlorophenol.

- Description: Lead (II) pyridyloxyphthalocyanine (PbTpyPc) and its quaternized form (PbTepyPc) were synthesized and the photophysical behavior examined. Low fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) of 0.01 and 0.02 were observed for PbTepyPc and PbTpyPc, respectively. The singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) were 0.60 and 0.68, for PbTepyPc and PbTpyPc, respectively using DPBF as a quencher in DMF. Singlet oxygen production of the embedded sensitizers in electrospun fiber were quantified using ADMA and were found to be ΦΔ = 0.41 and ΦΔ = 0.21 for PbTepyPc and PbTpyPc, respectively. Photodynamic inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) with the quaternized photosensitizer at 5 μM, totally inactivated the E. coli (with log CFU = 10 decrease). Only 0.4 log CFU decrease was obtained with PbTpyPc. The embedded non-quaternized photosensitizer (PbTpyPc) was less active on the gram negative bacteria but the quaternized photosensitizer (PbTepyPc) was effective towards inactivation of E. coli.

- Description: An amperometric sensor, based on carbon paste impregnated with iron (II) phthalocyanine complex (FePc), has been constructed for the assay of anti‐HIV agent dideoxyinosine (didanosine, DDI). Using chronoamperometry (E = +1.04 V versus Ag/AgCl) technique, the amperometric sensor can be used reliably for dideoxyinosine assay at pH 7.4 phosphate buffer in the 1.5–9.5 nmol/L concentration range with a detection limit of 5.7 × 10−10 mol/L. The surface of the electrode can easily be regenerated by simple polishing, obtaining a fresh surface ready for use in a new assay. The new amperometric sensor proved to be highly reliable for the assay of dideoxyinosine purity in raw material as well as for the uniformity content test of Videx® tablets.

- Description: The syntheses of zinc and magnesium 9,16,23-tris-(5-trifluoromethyl-2-mercaptopyridine)-2-(carboxy)phthalocyaninato complexes are described for the first time. The photophysical and photochemical parameters of these molecules in the absence or presence of folic acid are compared to the corresponding oxygen bridged complexes and to 2,9,17,23-tetrakis-[(1,6-hexanedithiol)phthalocyaninato]zinc(II), [8,15,22-tris-(naptho)-2-(amidoethanethiol)phthalocyaninato]zinc(II) and zinc phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate. In the absence of folic acid, the complexes show relatively good triplet quantum yields (ranging from 0.52 to 0.88) in DMSO with reasonable triplet lifetime between 140 and 470 μs. The complexes showed high singlet oxygen quantum yield values ranging from 0.27 to 0.66 in the absence of folic acid. In the presence of folic acid, the triplet quantum yield values were between 0.37 and 0.75 and the lifetimes were significantly reduced (70–320 μs).

- Description: The photochemical properties of silicon octaphenoxyphthalocyanines (SiOPPc) oligomerized were studied in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solutions. Oligomers containing 2–5 and 9 SiOPPc rings linked with terephthalate linkages were synthesized. Singlet oxygen quantum yields were found to be in the range 0.11–0.34, and increased with the number of rings up to five rings, a decrease in the quantum yield was observed for nine rings. This is explained in terms of the high aggregation of the oligomer containing nine rings.

- Description: The metal-free (H2TPrOPhOPc), cobalt (CoTPrOPhOPc) and manganese (Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc) tetra propargyloxyphenoxy phthalocyanines were evaluated for their potential as optical limiting materials. The effect of the substituents and the central metal ions on the nonlinear optical properties was evaluated. The metal-free phthalocyanine exhibited better nonlinear optical properties when compared to the cobalt and manganese complexes owing to the metal ions quenching the excited state due to their half-filled d-orbitals. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (βeff, ×10−5 m MW−1) followed the trend of H2TPrOPhOPc > CoTPrOPhOPc > Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc. The values βeff (×10−5 m MW−1) using 532 nm Nd:YAG (560 nm monochromatic Ekspla) laser sources were 23.5 > 14.3 > 9.20 (14.4). The second-order nonlinear coefficient obtained using density functional theory calculations, the theoretical hyper-Rayleigh scattering (βHRS, ×10−28 esu), showed the decreasing trend for H2TPrOPhOPc (2.28) > CoTPrOPhOPc (2.10) > Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc (1.86). The 4-(propargyloxy)phenoxy substituents enhanced the optical limiting properties of the synthesized phthalocyanines.

- Description: The electrochemical and spectroscopic behavior of tantalum(V) phthalocyanine are presented. The NMR spectra is consistent with the lack of symmetry of the complex. Cyclic (CV) and square wave (SWV) voltammetries, and spectroelectrochemistry, were employed in the study of the complex. Two one-electron reductions and a simultaneous 4-electron reduction were observed. Reduction occurs first at the metal to form a Ta(IV) species, followed by ring based processes.

- Description: This manuscript reports on syntheses of new multi-decker phthalocyanines, namely: bis-{2,3,9,10,16,10,16,17,23,24-octa(4-tertbutylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato} cerium(III) (2), tris-{2,3,9,10,16,10,16,17,23,24-octa(4-tertbutylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato} dicerium(III) (4) and bis-{2,3,9,10,16,10,16,17,23,24-octa(4-tertbutylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato} gadolinium(III) (5). Complex 4 which is a tris phthalocyanine showed better nonlinear optical behavior in solution than 2 which is a bis phthalocyanine, both containing the same central metal, Ce. All the three molecules possess good optical limiting properties judged by the limiting threshold values which ranged from 0.04 to 0.09 J cm−2 with complex 5 embedded in thin films, showing the lowest value of 0.04 J cm−2. Furthermore, nonlinear optical processes responsible for reverse saturable absorption data are investigated.

- Description: This work reports on the syntheses of new thiophene tetra substituted cobalt, manganese and zinc phthalocyanine (CoTETPc, (Cl)MnTETPc and ZnTETPc) complexes. The redox processes due to the thiophene substituent on the ring of the metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) were observed, in addition to Pc ring and metal (for Co and Mn complexes) based redox activity. The electrocatalytic activity of the CoTETPc complex adsorbed on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by drop/dry-thermal annealing was investigated using L-cysteine. The modified electrode was stable to repetitive use without any signs of deactivation by oxidation products and was used to determine L-cysteine at concentrations between 0.0015 and 1 mM in pH 4 aqueous conditions.

- Description: Two or eight zinc triphenyl porphyrins were conjugated with Zn-phthalocyanine or H2-phthalocyanine to form ZnPc–(ZnTPP)2, ZnPc–(ZnTPP)8, H2Pc–(ZnTPP)2 and H2Pc–(ZnTPP)8. Energy transfers from the porphyrin moiety to phthalocyanine part were quantitatively studied with the modality of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). By measuring the fluorescence increment from the phthalocyanine moiety and the decrease from porphyrin part under selective excitation at the B band of the porphyrin part in those conjugated compounds and their equimolar mixture of compositions, energy transfer efficiencies were estimated to be 90% for H2Pc–(ZnTPP)8 and ZnPc–(ZnTPP)8, and 60%, 30% for ZnPc–(ZnTPP)2 and H2Pc–(ZnTPP)2, respectively.

- Description: Zinc phthalocyanine bearing four ascorbic acid units (formed via ester bond between zinc carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines and ascorbic acid) was synthesized and characterized using different spectroscopic methods. The complex (with or without ascorbic acid) was further adsorbed onto single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and further characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The photophysical properties of the complexes were studied. The synthesized complex showed better photophysical properties when compared to the carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines alone, this is evident in the increase of the triplet quantum yields (ΦT), triplet life-times (τT) and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ). The zinc phthalocyanines bearing ascorbic acid showed improved triplet life-times even in the presence of SWCNTs.

- Description: Several differently substituted Zn(II) phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) were prepared and conjugated to GQDs. The photophysical properties were determined for both the Pcs and their respective conjugates including the fluorescence/triplet quantum yields and lifetimes as well as the singlet oxygen generating abilities. Upon conjugation to GQDs, the fluorescence of the Pcs decreased (insignificant decrease in some cases), with an increase in the triplet quantum yields. However, the singlet quantum yields of the Pcs in the conjugates did not show an increase with the increase in the triplet quantum yields, this is suspected to be due to the screening effect. The cytotoxicity of the complexes in vitro decreased upon conjugation, as a result of the reduced actual number of Pcs units provided in the conjugate for therapy. Upon introduction of cationic charges, the photodynamic therapy activity of the complexes increased.

- Description: Several aryloxo (3a–6a and 3b–6b) and alkylthio (3d and 3e) derivatised phthalocyanines were synthesized, characterized and the photochemical and photophysical properties investigated along with those of the previously reported (3c–5c, 4d, 5d, 4e and 5e) complexes. The effects of open-shell metals (Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II)) on the photophysical and photochemical properties of the phthalocyanine ligands were investigated. Palladium and platinum improved the triplet quantum yield and singlet oxygen generation capacities of the unmetalated phthalocyanines (3a–3e) making their complexes candidates for further investigation in photocatalysis. Ni(II)Pc analogues gave poor results compared with their Pd(II)Pc and Pt(II)Pc counterparts.

- Description: Kinetic and equilibrium studies for the coordination of cyanide or sulfur dioxide to the cobalt(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine ([CoTSPc]4−) complex are reported. The equilibrium constant for the coordination of the cyanide under pH 11 conditions and an oxygen atmosphere, and the formation of [(CN−)2Co(III)TSPc]5− species, was found to be 2.1×101 dm3 mol−1 and the rate constant, kf was found to be 7.4 dm3 mol−1 s−1. Similarly, the coordination of SO2 to [CoTSPc]4− occurred with an equilibrium constant of 8.7×101 dm3 mol−1 and a rate constant of 2.1×102 dm3 mol−1 s−1, at pH 11. These rate and equilibrium constants represent the coordination of the second cyanide or sulfur dioxide ligands to the [CoTSPc]4− species. Coordination of the first ligand occurred faster than that of the second ligand in both cases. The coordination is accompanied by the oxidation of the central Co(II) metal with the formation of a Co(III) tetrasulfophthalocyanine species.

- Description: Cobalt tetrasulfophthalocyanine (CoTSPc) was used to catalyze the oxidation of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (TCP) using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxidant. This CoTSPc catalyzed hydrogen peroxide oxidation of chlorophenols resulted in the formation of different types of oxidation products depending on the solvent conditions. In water/methanol conditions (where CoTSPc is mainly monomeric, and unionized forms of the phenols), phenol and hydroquinone were the main oxidation products, while in phosphate buffer solutions (pH 7 and 10 for TCP and 2-CP, respectively, where CoTSPc is mainly aggregated, and ionized forms of the phenols), benzoquinone was the main product. In contrast to CoTSPc, other MTSPc complexes studied (AlTSPc, CuTSPc and NiTSPc) exhibited no detectable catalytic effect on the oxidation of chlorophenols under the experimental conditions employed, thus proving the effect of the central metal ions on efficient catalysis of chlorophenol. Reaction pathways are proposed based on the relative time of oxidation products formation.

- Description: In this article the electrocatalytic behavior of an iron(II)tetrasulfophthalocyanine modified carbon paste microelectrode for the oxidation of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) is described. Although the oxidation potential of ascorbic acid is shifted by over 100 mV to more positive potentials, no peak separation could be obtained. This can be explained by the immediate homogeneous reduction of the oxidation product of dopamine by ascorbic acid in solution. However, this reaction induces a shift of the half-wave potential as a function of ratio of concentration of dopamine to ascorbic acid (cDA/cAA). Therefore it was possible to determine the cAA and cDA from this potential shift and the experimental peak current. Detection limits of 4.5±0.2×10−7 and 7.5±0.5×10−7 mol L−1 were obtained respectively for dopamine and ascorbic acid for cDA/cAA>0.01.
