- Description: This study sought to assess the management of water services in the Fairview community within the Ixopo town under the Harry Gwala District Municipality (HGDM). The study was further motivated by the need to ascertain stakeholders’ perceptions on the response to water shortage challenges in the Fairview community, assess Fairview community members’ knowledge, and identify opportunities brought about by water shortages in this community. The study was anchored on the service quality model (SERVQUAL) as the theoretical framework. The research design of the study was exploratory and used both qualitative and quantitative methods. The target population of the study consisted of ordinary members of the Fairview community and managerial staff at the HGDM. The qualitative part of the study involved eight (n = 8) managerial employees at the municipality. In total, 120 questionnaires were despatched, and 110 were returned, which gave a 92% response rate for the quantitative part of the study. The questionnaire respondents were chosen by random sampling, while the interview respondents were chosen by purposive sampling. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while the qualitative data were analysed using applied thematic analysis. The study revealed that there is generally a negative perception of the municipal responses to addressing water supply challenges and that the municipality does not always act promptly to water supply challenges. Perceptions of poor-quality service provision regarding responsiveness, reliability, assurance, and empathy were found. The findings also revealed that the Fairview community members are generally knowledgeable about water conservation. The study unveiled opportunities for addressing water supply challenges, such as mobilising funds from stakeholders to build additional water reticulation, harvesting capacity, and modernisation of water management, and recommends that the municipality immediately conduct public participation meetings and citizen satisfaction surveys to ascertain community service delivery expectations, followed by developing service quality standards and performance agreements with municipal staff to improve residents’ perceptions of the municipality’s ability to respond to water supply challenges. , Thesis (MPA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Governmental and Social Sciences, 2024

- Description: This study aims to explore how risk management can be applied by the Western Cape Provincial Government to enhance citizen centricity in the Province. The Provincial Departments and Public Entities in this province are applauded for achieving satisfactory audit results in recent financial years from the Auditor-General South Africa. Despite the aforementioned, service delivery protests remain ongoing, which is indicative of citizen dissatisfaction and distress. Ensuring an effective, efficient, and transparent risk management system is mandatory, as prescribed by relevant legislation in South Africa and citizens are entitled to specific rights articulated in the Bill of Rights chapter of the Constitution. Therefore, it is essential that risk management – which forms part of good governance – be embedded by leadership and in processes to ultimately constrain risks which may hinder citizen centricity. Six chapters are included in this research paper. A qualitative approach was adopted, which considered a comprehensive review of literature, and a desktop analysis was performed. Secondary data and information sources were consulted and applied, without the participation of human subjects, for the purposes of primary data collection. Research findings were presented utilising thematic content analysis. It was found during the study that the Western Cape Government risk management framework is flexible to constrain various categories of risk and embraces local and global best practices in the risk management and citizen-focused governments arenas. Furthermore, the framework advocates and drives collaboration between a myriad of role-players, both internal and external to the organisation, to collectively manage risks posed to the achievement of the defined goals, objectives and priorities. - Description: This study is aimed at determining the role that hashtag activism has played in advocating against gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting perpetrator accountability. The study used major GBV hashtags such as #MeToo, #WhyIStayed and #AmINext to investigate how effective these hashtag movements have been in breaking the silence around GBV and fighting against GBV. The study made use of both qualitative and quantitative research methodology, which was useful to gain a deeper understanding of GBV and all the social and cultural practices that perpetuate it. Qualitative data were collected by means of interviews and tweets under the selected hashtags. An online survey questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data. The data provided an understanding of the complexities surrounding GBV and people’s views on hashtag activism and GBV. Through the data analysis, the study found that hashtag activism has been effective in changing dominant discourses, advocating against GBV, creating awareness and solidarity around GBV issues, and promoting perpetrator accountability. The study calls for a global collective effort to develop, record and archive feminist initiatives so that all the structural conditions which enable and perpetuate sexual violence are exposed and cannot be forgotten or ignored. - Description: The aim of this study was to identify the factors that are affecting the learning of English as a second language in South African schools. Although many South African learners are not fluent or native speakers of the English language, they are required to learn the content of their subjects in English. This is because there is a lack of resources in South Africa to teach other languages and English is seen as the language that grants access to better education and job opportunities, and it is the language that is used to communicate worldwide. The input, output, interaction and sociocultural theories were used to inform the theoretical framework of the study. This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods in order to answer the research question. The participants for this study consisted of individuals who matriculated in South Africa within the period of the past five years and were taught English as a second language. The participants were approached through social media platforms. One hundred participants responded to the questionnaire and 14 were interviewed. The methods of conducting interviews and distributing questionnaires were used to help the researcher to gain a better understanding of the topic. The findings of this study indicate that there are still teachers in South African schools who are not well qualified or proficient in the English language. In addition, learners face a variety of challenges in learning English as a second language. These challenges are found not only within the school context but also outside of school. The learners’ external environment also influences their learning of English as a second language. These external influences include overcrowding at schools, lack of resources such as libraries or books, and parents who are not involved in their children’s learning of English. Being proficient in L1 is important in order develop L2 because a learner can use their L1 skills to learn L2. There are also affective factors such as motivation, confidence and anxiety that play a role in in learning a second language. One of the reasons that some learners perform better than others when it comes to learning English is because of the motivation and self-confidence that they possess. Anxiety related to learning English as a second language is seen as a threat to an individual’s self-concept. This is because learners might find it difficult to communicate well in a language they have not learnt completely. Learners need to be encouraged to achieve their best level in their English skills so that their learning outcomes can be improved. Accordingly, the World Health Organization (WHO) came up with safety measures to try and mitigate the spread of the virus. These measures included Covid-19 health communication, and this communication was transmitted mostly through the media. However, this crucial health communication was mostly conveyed in English. The cascading of the Covid-19 health communication in English proved to be problematic worldwide especially for linguistically diverse countries like South Africa. As a result, the South African government had to put measures in place to ensure that the health communication regarding Covid-19 could reach every citizen in the country by commissioning translation services to urgently translate terms relating to Covid-19 into all the South African indigenous languages including isiXhosa. Hence the South African government and City of Tshwane decided to enlist the services of the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SaDiLaR) and the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) to translate the Covid-19 terminology into all the indigenous languages spoken in the country. This study therefore aims to examine the quality and the accuracy of the translated Covid-19 terms into isiXhosa especially since the translation of these terms had to be done urgently. The study will follow a qualitative method approach and use the skopos theory as the lens of the study. Skopos refers to purpose, intention, and aim. The theory is known as a purpose for action and the reader in this theory is important in determining the purpose of the translation at hand. In evaluating the terminology that has been translated the theory will be applied to determine whether the purpose and the aim of the terminology was adequately carried out to the intended audience. The English terms and isiXhosa terms collected in this research which will be analysed are sourced from the material that was developed and compiled by SaDiLaR and PanSALB and subsequently cascaded to the public during the Covid-19 pandemic. Evidence reveals these abilities to be poor. Interviews with educators in the English Home Language Department at the selected school aimed to gain insight into their approaches to teaching literary writing as well as their comprehension and methods of implementation of the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement’s guidelines for the teaching of the literary essay. Focus group discussions were held with the predominantly isiXhosa or Afrikaans-speaking learners to gauge whether their identities as isiXhosa and Afrikaans speakers in the English Home Language classroom affect their perceptions of the literary texts they have to read and write about. Lastly, an analysis of the learners’ literary essays provided a window into the translation of writing techniques taught and learned. The study found that literary essay writing and literature study lessons contributed to the alienation learners experienced. Learners’ varying learning styles are not prioritised for literature study and literary essay writing. The educators’ selected approach is partly due to the overloaded curriculum which does not equip teachers with the information and skills to execute lessons which lead to effective acquisition of literary writing skills. The CAPS’s flawed premises of the nature of language and lack of support of educators’ teaching of the literary essay perpetuates the subjugation of learners. - Description: This study aimed to generate an in-depth understanding of how the resolutions are being implemented post-mediation process and the labour union, which in this study is the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and the mediator in the process of managing collective disputes between the employer and employee utilising mediation. The study was limited to the Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) Kariega plant, therefore, the findings are contextually limited to the VWSA Kariega plant. The theoretical frameworks for this study were relative deprivation theory, frustration-aggression theory, Marxism, and dysfunctional and functional social conflict. These were utilised to explore and describe the phenomenon under investigation. This study employed a qualitative method to answer the research questions and address its problem statement. The data were collected through focus group discussions and elite interviews. The study used a purposive sampling technique, and the sample included 33 participants. The primary research question was: Were the agreements mediated at the VWSA Kariega plant effectively implemented between 1994 and 2021? The study’s findings imply that for the effective implementation of mediation resolutions, the following should be considered: implementing resolutions within the given timeframe, parties at mediation adapting and accommodating new technological changes and disasters at the National Bargaining Forum (NBF) level, prioritising the education and training of shop stewards and VWSA management representatives on NBF agreements, including the implementation thereof. Managing pertinent issues concerning NUMSA and the Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organisation (AMEO), interpreting NBF agreements, and ensuring that parties differentiate between the Labour Relations Act No. 66 of 1995 (LRA) and NBF processes. The impact of South Africa's sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia : the case of Yemen

These attacks are carried out using high-tech military tools, such as drones, aircraft, bombs, and other weapons. According to Hokayem (2016), nearly 24 million Yemenis require aid as Yemen experiences the world’s largest humanitarian crises. Open Secretes released a report in 2020 outlining that weapons used in the war in Yemen could be traced back to Denel, alluding to its role and complicity in the conflict. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Denel in the conflict in Yemen and its socio-economic effects. In doing so, South Africa’s trade relations with the Saudi-Arabia will be explored. In addition, unpacking the socio-economic conditions that exists domestically and internationally that influence global arms trade. A qualitative research approach is employed. Secondary research analysis is conducted using government publications, international policy reports, books, journals, and newspaper articles. In addressing the social aspect of the arms trade effects, the humanitarian component uses a psycho-social theoretical framework which encompasses Burtons’ human needs theory. In addition to this main theory, the frustration-aggression theory as well as the relative deprivation theory were applied to support the theory central to the study. Fundamental to this study is understanding Denel’s’ complicity in the conflict in Yemen and the effects thereof. This stems from the company’s trade agreements between itself and Saudi Arabia, which has been at the forefront of multiple proxy wars within the region. Denel’s implied complicity stems from the correlation between the heightened period of conflict in the Yemen and the parastatal’s record-breaking order book during the same period. The research study focuses on the period between 2013 – 2016. Further research has been conducted in order to provide a comprehensive historical account and context of the conflict and the role of Denel as a parastatal organisation. Furthermore, this study delves into ongoing crises and the volatile nature of global arms trade regulations. It is for the reasons alluded to above that the study insists on not limiting period of the study to 2013 – 2016. The study findings suggest that although weapons used in the conflict in Yemen could be traced back to Denel, these were insignificant to the overall contribution to the conflict in Yemen, despite South Africa’s and Saudi Arabia’s breach of the End-User agreement. As a result of Saudi Arabia’s continued infringement of human rights, the state was not to be sold weapons as they are proven to have further ramifications against the protection of human rights. Moreover, the arms trade industry partially functions independently from government intervention and regulation, making it increasingly difficult to implement international policy. What is of paramount importance is the direct effect of conflict on innocent civilians who continue to suffer and the human cost of profit and the struggle for power and resources. Recommendations highlighted in the treatise include striking a balance between profitability and the humanitarian perspective by taking into consideration both private sector profit motives and the public sector's responsibility to prioritise human rights and the well-being of people. This approach ensures efficient management of Denel and reduces the possibility of privatization, as Denel remains the lifeline of the South African Defense Force (SADF). To ensure compliance with domestic and international arms treaty regulations, it is necessary to enforce a stricter process for arms sales justification. The agreement should incorporate legal measures that enable the prosecution of the state in cases where irregularities in weapons sales approval, including corruption or personal/political motives, are identified. The study recommends that Denel should initiate a strategic restructuring plan to revitalise its business model and leadership development. This restructuring should prioritise ethical business practices, legality, and vetting of customer information while ensuring profitability for self-sustainability. Addressing irregular sale agreements is crucial before investing in technology advancement and research. Growth assessment should be based on profit margins and order book prospects to ensure business optimisation and resource adequacy. - Description: This study assessed local economic development (LED) as a catalyst for job creation in Amathole District. LED is a mechanism that could be used to reduce the socio-economic difficulties faced by the district. These socio-economic challenges include high levels of poverty, unemployment and inequality. The research study is crucial because its area of focus is situated in the province with the highest official unemployment rate in South Africa. With the rising levels of unemployment, which is rising unabated, there is a likelihood of fundamental challenges being experienced by municipalities inhibiting their ability to fulfil their critical service role effectively. The study seeks to investigate whether the LED strategies implemented by the municipalities in the Amathole District are achieving the objectives of poverty alleviation and job creation. The sample and focus were six local municipalities in the Amathole District and the district municipality. The local municipalities in the district are the Amahlathi Local Municipality, Great Kei Local Municipality, Mbhashe Local Municipality, Mnquma Local Municipality, Ngqushwa Local Municipality and the Amathole District Municipality. Primary data was obtained and assessed through semi-structured questionnaires, and the respondents were asked probing questions. The interviews were typed verbatim, and themes were identified during the analysis and interpretation of the data collected. The relevant secondary data was also assessed and analysed from the annual reports and integrated development plans of the municipalities and were captured into Microsoft Excel for analysis. The study findings conclude that the unemployment rates in the Amathole District municipalities have increased during the period reviewed. It was noted that the upper-bound poverty rates in Amathole District remained unchanged during the reviewed period, but the lower-bound poverty rates increased. It was also noted through the calculation of the coefficient correlation that there is a stronger correlation between unemployment and the lower-bound poverty rate than unemployment and the upper-bound poverty rate. In order to eradicate the challenges of poverty and unemployment increasing despite the LED being implemented, it is recommended that adequate funding be made available, that co-ordination of sector plans be improved, LED be prioritised by municipalities, baseline information be utilised and improved, sustainable employment opportunities be created, and there be robust skills development initiatives in municipalities. , Thesis (MPhil) -- Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, School of Economics, Development and Tourism, 2024

- Description: The provision of quality service continues to be a challenge in South Africa. This research was triggered by the quality of service delivery, which indicated a downward trend in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality during the past five years. Notably, deficiencies in the quality of service delivery are a prevalent problem for municipalities, including the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Insufficient strategic leadership skills in management lead to a lack of satisfaction, motivation and a loss of loyalty among employees, which leads to poor quality of services delivered to the community. In order to understand the relationship between employee loyalty, employee satisfaction, leadership styles, and quality of service delivery, this study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing the quality of service delivery in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality with the intention to enhance these from the employee’s perspective. This study followed a quantitative approach with stratified random sampling. Online surveys were used to collect data from sampled Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality employees. The sample size was 110 respondents, and a 66.09% response rate was achieved. Data analysis techniques used in the study included exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to extract statistically significant factors. Multiple regression analysis was employed to evaluate the predictive power of independent variables (Employee Empowerment, Loyalty of Employees, Employee Satisfaction, Transformational Leadership) over the dependent variable (Quality of Service). The Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The findings revealed that Employee Empowerment did not influence the quality of service in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The study's findings reveal that at 95% confidence level and alpha = 0.05, Loyalty of Employees, Employee Satisfaction, and Transformational Leadership significantly positively influence the Quality of Service. The study recommends that Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality management must embark on initiatives like life-work balance, organisational commitment, innovation behaviour, and benchmarking to improve the quality of service delivery. The study has contributed to the existing body of knowledge on quality of service by introducing Loyalty of Employees, Employee Satisfaction, and Transformational Leadership as factors significantly positively influencing the quality of service delivery compared to the renowned SERVQUAL dimensions (Empathy, Responsiveness, Assurance, Reliability, and Tangibility). The horizontal application of the environmental right to juristic persons at sea

- Description: Due to its vast resources, the ocean has been designated the new “economic frontier”. States are focusing on unlocking this potential to boost economic growth, employment and innovation. Because of their substantial resources, corporations are key actors in driving the development of the ocean economy. Although corporations undeniably contribute significantly to realising the ocean economy’s potential, their main activities—including offshore oil and gas exploration and production and fishing—pose great threats to marine ecosystems. This harm to the marine environment may also threaten and adversely impact many people’s lives, health, well-being, livelihood, culture and traditions. In the South African context, this reality is notably seen through Operation Phakisa. This government initiative aims to unlock the economic potential of the ocean economy to expedite the implementation of solutions to poverty, unemployment and inequality. This race to utilise the oceans and its resources brings to the fore the interaction between the right to have the environment protected and socio-economic development anticipated in section 24 of the South African Constitution. The South African Constitution through section 8(2) acknowledges that non-State actors such as corporations can abuse human rights in horizontal relationships. However, unlike the State, non-State actors are only bound in certain circumstances. Therefore, this thesis examines whether and, if so, to what extent section 24 of the Constitution binds juristic persons at sea. This thesis examines the direct application of international norms to non-State actors to determine how international human rights law addresses non-State actors' conduct that impairs an individual’s guaranteed rights. It was determined that international human rights law has an indirect horizontal effect. This means that in cases where a non-State actor impairs an individual’s human rights, international law permits the victim to hold the State responsible for the violation rather than the non-State actor who was the perpetrator. For a non-State actor to incur direct obligations to uphold certain human rights, the State must create these obligations in its domestic law. The thesis explored how the South African Bill of Rights imposes direct human rights obligations on non-State actors in a horizontal dispute. It was found that whether an entrenched right binds a non-State actor depends on a multi-factor enquiry confirmed by the Constitutional Court. Based on that enquiry, it concluded that the environmental right is capable of and suitable for horizontal application. Furthermore, non-State actors can bear positive and negative constitutional human rights obligations arising from the environmental right. A failure to comply with these obligations would violate this constitutional right. The most significant findings of this thesis pertain to the applicability of South Africa’s human rights law framework at sea. This is because the legal regime applicable at sea differs from that on land. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea assigns jurisdiction to States in the different maritime zones for different purposes. To elucidate South Africa's rights and obligations as delineated in the LOSC, the thesis focused on two examples: the exploitation of marine living resources and the prospection, exploration and exploitation of marine non-living resources. Subsequently, the extent to which South Africa has taken measures in its domestic law to implement those rights and duties was assessed. In addition, this approach was appropriate because questions concerning the horizontal application of the South African Bill of Rights necessitate contextual analysis and cannot be answered a priori and in the abstract. Using the multi-factor enquiry, the study showed that, in principle, section 24 of the Constitution might bind juristic persons within South Africa’s territorial jurisdiction, exclusive economic zone jurisdiction, continental shelf jurisdiction and under South Africa’s personal jurisdiction. Furthermore, juristic persons who control vessels registered in South Africa or control a vessel entitled to be registered in South Africa but has departed to a place outside South Africa without being registered might also be constitutionally bound based on flag State jurisdiction. The sole means of preventing South Africa from exercising its authority this way requires severing the jurisdictional connection between South Africa and the juristic person. It was recommended that in ocean-related matters, the connecting factor between South Africa and the juristic person must be considered as an additional factor in the enquiry to determine whether a particular right binds that juristic person. This race to utilise the oceans and its resources brings to the fore the interaction between the right to have the environment protected and socio-economic development anticipated in section 24 of the South African Constitution. The South African Constitution through section 8(2) acknowledges that non-State actors such as corporations can abuse human rights in horizontal relationships. However, unlike the State, non-State actors are only bound in certain circumstances. Therefore, this thesis examines whether and, if so, to what extent section 24 of the Constitution binds juristic persons at sea. This thesis examines the direct application of international norms to non-State actors to determine how international human rights law addresses non-State actors' conduct that impairs an individual’s guaranteed rights. It was determined that international human rights law has an indirect horizontal effect. This means that in cases where a non-State actor impairs an individual’s human rights, international law permits the victim to hold the State responsible for the violation rather than the non-State actor who was the perpetrator. For a non-State actor to incur direct obligations to uphold certain human rights, the State must create these obligations in its domestic law. The thesis explored how the South African Bill of Rights imposes direct human rights obligations on non-State actors in a horizontal dispute. It was found that whether an entrenched right binds a non-State actor depends on a multi-factor enquiry confirmed by the Constitutional Court. Based on that enquiry, it concluded that the environmental right is capable of and suitable for horizontal application. Furthermore, non-State actors can bear positive and negative constitutional human rights obligations arising from the environmental right. A failure to comply with these obligations would violate this constitutional right. The most significant findings of this thesis pertain to the applicability of South Africa’s human rights law framework at sea. This is because the legal regime applicable at sea differs from that on land. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea assigns jurisdiction to States in the different maritime zones for different purposes. To elucidate South Africa's rights and obligations as delineated in the LOSC, the thesis focused on two examples: the exploitation of marine living resources and the prospection, exploration and exploitation of marine non-living resources. Subsequently, the extent to which South Africa has taken measures in its domestic law to implement those rights and duties was assessed. In addition, this approach was appropriate because questions concerning the horizontal application of the South African Bill of Rights necessitate contextual analysis and cannot be answered a priori and in the abstract. Using the multi-factor enquiry, the study showed that, in principle, section 24 of the Constitution might bind juristic persons within South Africa’s territorial jurisdiction, exclusive economic zone jurisdiction, continental shelf jurisdiction and under South Africa’s personal jurisdiction. Furthermore, juristic persons who control vessels registered in South Africa or control a vessel entitled to be registered in South Africa but has departed to a place outside South Africa without being registered might also be constitutionally bound based on flag State jurisdiction. The sole means of preventing South Africa from exercising its authority this way requires severing the jurisdictional connection between South Africa and the juristic person. It was recommended that in ocean-related matters, the connecting factor between South Africa and the juristic person must be considered as an additional factor in the enquiry to determine whether a particular right binds that juristic person. Additionally, since the scope of corresponding rights-holders are “everyone”, even people outside South Africa present in places where the juristic person who is the corresponding duty-bearer operates or where their conduct is felt can hold these actors accountable for their constitutional human rights obligations. , Thesis (LLD) -- Faculty of Law, Department of Public Law, 2024

- Description: South African labour dispute resolution is a product of the country’s problematic past which was based on inequality and division. The new political dispensation led to the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in 1996, which enshrined a variety of basic human rights for all people within the Republic. Amongst these rights was section 23, which provided for and still protects the right to fair labour practices for all. In order to further give effect to this right, the Labour Relations Act was promulgated, with section 112 of the Act establishing the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (hereafter referred to as the CCMA). One of the main mandatory functions of the CCMA is that of statutory conciliation. Statutory conciliation must also be performed by any other accredited bodies such as bargaining councils. The term statutory conciliation refers to a process that occurs under the direction of an impartial third party where parties to a dispute endeavour to reach an agreement in order to settle the dispute. The process is without prejudice and proceedings are intended to help the parties find an amicable solution. It can be a very powerful tool to settle disputes in the labour law context where there are disputes between employers and employees where internal procedures have been exhausted and a deadlock has been reached. Statutory conciliation is the first step where a case has been referred to the CCMA. According to the CCMA, 3 844 169 cases have been referred to it since its establishment in 1996.1 In the 2021/22 financial year thus far, the number of case referrals to the CCMA sits at 156 777, a reflection of how well utilised the mechanism is. The main aim of this treatise is to explore the role of statutory conciliation as a mechanism of labour dispute resolution. The history and development of labour dispute resolution in South Africa will be examined; briefly followed by an explanation of the process of conciliation. The treatise will also consider the limitations of the process of statutory conciliation, as the process is not immune to abuse by parties. Since the advent of the Labour Relations Act, the courts have had to consider various aspects of conciliation, in particular concerning the confidentiality of the process and whether a commissioner may be compelled to testify on the conciliation process at arbitration or the Labour Court. The goal of this composition portfolio is to create pieces that are imbued with the spirit of indigenous Zimbabwean music making as passed on from father to son. The pieces composed include thorough-composed (pre-determined) solo and ensemble frameworks using mostly marimbas based largely on Shona scales and tuning, but also adding mbira, hosho and djembe. All of this is presented within complex structural manipulations that include African and some Western elements of formal music structure. The compositions feature two interlocking parts, known as kushaura and kutsinhira (call and respond), which are traditionally played in a simultaneous manner by two or more musicians. In this portfolio, these voices are spread across a range of players where the interplay between the parts produces complex polyphonic and polyrhythmic musical relationships. The compositions explore modal changes which add excitement, variety and an extra layer of complexity to the pieces. The final artefact is presented as a multimedia submission recorded as a documentary in real time, which is a representation of the embodied making of the music, central to this project.
