- Description: Public understanding of the goals of applied biology and conservation is promoted by showcasing charismatic or significant organisms using vernacular names. Conservation activities in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, are prioritising taxa that have high rates of provincial endemism, such as snails, earthworms, millipedes and cicadas. To assist wider public engagement in these activities, an assessment of endemism of the cicadas of KwaZulu-Natal is presented along with a dichotomous, 37-couplet key for the identification of males, based mainly on externally visible morphology and colouration. Standardised English vernacular names coined following a simple naming convention are proposed. Forty-two percent (16 out of 38) of the cicada species known from KwaZulu-Natal are endemic to the province. Photographs of some of the species are included to facilitate their identification. Photographs can be used for identification of various species providing that the diagnostic characters are visible in the photographs. For this purpose, photographs may have to be taken of hand-held individuals. Some of the endemic species are of particular concern for conservation because they are not known to occur in statutory protected areas or are only known from relatively small protected areas. The latter may not be able to ensure the long-term survival of the species. The rate and extent of loss of habitat outside protected areas is likely to be a grave threat to species that are not protected or that are inadequately conserved in statutory protected areas. The standardised vernacular names proposed here provide a tool for communicating provincial conservation plans and concerns with stakeholders in KwaZulu-Natal and for stimulating interest in cicadas amongst land users, environmental impact assessment practitioners, biologists, naturalists and citizen scientists.

About 350 bp of the 16S ribosomalRNAgene was amplified from genomicDNAextracted from each ‘pseudospecies', sequenced, and bacteria identified using BLASTn. Nineteen different types of colony were identified from M. domestica, with Pseudomonas sp. and Swine Manure Bacterium SP14 being most abundant. Chrysomya megacephala yielded 15 distinct pseudospecies with total colony counts approximating to 10 000 from 10 plates, where 80 % of colonies were non-pathogenic Bacillus pumilus. A total of 18 species were identified genetically: three shared by the fly species; four unique to C. megacephala, and 13 unique to M. domestica. Half of these 18 species were pathogenic, two or three others were food spoilers and the rest were environmental or commensal bacteria from soil or plant matter. This study added three new pathogenic strains of bacteria and one new environmental strain to the list of bacteria reported to be vectored by these flies.

The species Lucilia cuprina, Chrysomya megacephala, Ch. saffranea, Ch. albifrontalis and Calliphora stygia were unable to be monophyletically resolved based on these data. Identification of phylogenetically young species will require a faster-evolving molecular marker, but most species could be unambiguously characterised by sampling relatively few conspecific individuals if they were from distant localities. Intraspecific geographical variation was observed within Ch. rufifacies and L. cuprina, and is discussed with reference to unrecognised species.

- Description: Necrophagous blowflies can provide an excellent source of evidence for forensic entomologists and are also relevant to problems in public health, medicine, and animal health. However, access to useful information about these blowflies is constrained by the need to correctly identify the flies, and the poor availability of reliable, accessible identification tools is a serious obstacle to the development of forensic entomology in the majority of African countries. In response to this need, a high-quality key to the adults of all species of forensically relevant blowflies of Africa has been prepared, drawing on high-quality entomological materials and modern focus-stacking photomicroscopy. This new key can be easily applied by investigators inexperienced in the taxonomy of blowflies and is made available through a highly accessible online platform. They have shaped our understanding of how large vertebrate cadavers decompose in, for example, various environments, seasons and after various ante- or postmortem cadaver modifications. They have also been used to demonstrate the feasibility of several new or well-established forensic techniques. The advent of outdoor human taphonomy facilities enabled experimental comparisons of decomposition between pig and human cadavers. Recent comparisons challenged the pig-as-analogue claim in entomology and taphonomy research. In this review, we discuss in a broad methodological context the advantages and disadvantages of pig and human cadavers for forensic research and rebut the critique of pigs as analogues for humans. We conclude that experiments using human cadaver analogues (i.e. pig carcasses) are easier to replicate and more practical for controlling confounding factors than studies based solely on humans and, therefore, are likely to remain our primary epistemic source of forensic knowledge for the immediate future. We supplement these considerations with new guidelines for model cadaver choice in forensic science research.

The aims of this study were to determine the seasonal phenology of P. xylostella populations on canola, and the composition, relative abundance and seasonal phenology of parasitoids attacking P. xylostella on this crop. Diamondback moth adults were monitored with synthetic sex-pheromone traps. Larval and pupal populations of P. xylostella were monitored weekly for three years at Bapsfontein and Rietondale in Gauteng province. Samples of diamondback moth larvae, pupae and parasitoid cocoons were collected and transported to the laboratory. Parasitoids that emerged were identified and their incidence recorded. Berlese funnel catches were used as an indicator of the accuracy of the visual counts. The infestation level of P. xylostella larvae was high from May to August at Rietondale, while at Bapsfontein it was high from September to December. There was a high correlation (r=0.79, P<0.001) between pheromone trap catches and subsequent larval infestations at Bapsfontein. The pheromone traps indicated that diamondback moth adults were present throughout the year. Berlese funnel catches indicated that a large number of larvae, especially first instars, were overlooked during visual plant scouting. Parasitism rates were often very high, reaching 90–100 %. The following parasitoids were recorded from field-collected P. xylostella: the larval parasitoids Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Apanteles halfordi Ullyett (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), the larval/pupal parasitoids Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), the pupal parasitoid Diadromus collaris (Gravenhorst) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), and the hyperparasitoids Mesochorus sp. There are many tools available for the analysis of these data to provide insight and understanding of the data in order to understand influences on aquatic ecosystems. Increasingly complex computational tools allow analysis and modeling of data in order to explain river, and subsequent biological, processes from landscape (catchment) processes (Johnson and Gage, 1997), although the scale at which analysis and interpretation occurs is important. Science and management need to interact in order to truly succeed in effectively applying adaptive management and incorporate monitoring and assessment programmes in management processes (Rogers and Biggs, 1999). However, water resource management is often undertaken in the context of incomplete information and knowledge of functioning ecosystem processess and responses: this inevitably leads to uncertainty and unpredictability (Roux et al. 1999). One of the major challenges for managing rivers is to be able to monitor rivers effectively in order to detect changes as they occur, to identify the causes of the changes and to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic causes of change. Adaptive management is required to effectively manage rivers, but this does require that there is an understanding of, and information for, the rivers being managed. Rogers and Biggs (1999) highlighted the need to integrate monitoring programmes with indicators in order to undertake assessments of ecosystem health as part of the management plan of the rivers of the Kruger National Park in order to maintain, and restore, natural river ecosystem health and biodiversity (Rogers and Bestbier, 1997). One of the main aims of the Kruger National Park Rivers Research Programme (KNPRRP) was to contribute to the conservation of the natural environment by developing skills and methods to understand the ecological functioning of the natural environment and to predict responses of the river systems to natural and anthropogenic changes in order to effectively manage them (Breen, 1994, in van Rensburg and Dent, 1997). Classification systems are able to provide useful management information, but many have focussed on abiotic rather than biotic factors because resultant biotic patterns are likely to be correlated with abiotic components (Solomon et al., 1999). Much of the classification of the Kruger National Park has focussed on classification of land with little regard for rivers (these were incorporated into the two classification systems proposed by Venter and Gertenbach (in Solomon et al., 1999)). The objective of this project is to identify similarities and differences between the five major rivers of the Kruger National Park, towards the design and testing of a classification framework in order to aid management of the KNP rivers by contributing to effective monitoring. This will be achieved through the following: 1. collate available (current and historical) information concerning physical and biological variables for the Luvuvhu, Letaba, Olifants, Sabie and Crocodile Rivers, using a common dataset to establish the degree of similarities and differences between these five major rivers of the KNP; and 2. determine how different the rivers are, in order to optimize monitoring and management programmes for these differences. The aim of this project was not to classify the rivers of the KNP. The project rather aims to identify gaps in data availability which may result in inadequate and inappropriate management of the rivers. Results (in the form of a data matrix) emanating from this study could assist in establishing expected natural conditions and biota in the five major rivers of the KNP, and knowledge from data-rich rivers (e.g. Sabie River) could potentially be extrapolated to data-poor rivers, or sections of rivers. Invertebrates and fish are the main tools of aquatic species biodiversity monitoring, and require an understanding of the natural presence, absence and abundance patterns in aquatic ecosystems. This study contributes to this understanding by organising available information of biotic and abiotic information.

Much of the classification of the Kruger National Park has focussed on classification of land with little regard for rivers (these were incorporated into the two classification systems proposed by Venter and Gertenbach (in Solomon et al., 1999)). The objective of this project is to identify similarities and differences between the five major rivers of the Kruger National Park, towards the design and testing of a classification framework in order to aid management of the KNP rivers by contributing to effective monitoring. This will be achieved through the following: 1. collate available (current and historical) information concerning physical and biological variables for the Luvuvhu, Letaba, Olifants, Sabie and Crocodile Rivers, using a common dataset to establish the degree of similarities and differences between these five major rivers of the KNP; and 2. determine how different the rivers are, in order to optimize monitoring and management programmes for these differences. The aim of this project was not to classify the rivers of the KNP. The project rather aims to identify gaps in data availability which may result in inadequate and inappropriate management of the rivers. Results (in the form of a data matrix) emanating from this study could assist in establishing expected natural conditions and biota in the five major rivers of the KNP, and knowledge from data-rich rivers (e.g. Sabie River) could potentially be extrapolated to data-poor rivers, or sections of rivers. Invertebrates and fish are the main tools of aquatic species biodiversity monitoring, and require an understanding of the natural presence, absence and abundance patterns in aquatic ecosystems. This study contributes to this understanding by organising available information of biotic and abiotic information.

Trends to greater mortality at higher drug concentrations were not statistically significant. Larvae exposed to either drug took significantly longer to reach pupation compared to those in the control, while larvae exposed to sodium methohexital passed through pupation significantly faster than those in the control. No systematic relationship was found between drug concentration and development time of larvae or pupae. The total developmental period from hatching to eclosion did not differ between treatments, implying that estimates of post mortem intervals- (PMI) based on the emergence of adult flies will not be affected by the involvement of these drugs in a case. On the other hand, anomalous pupation spans may indicate the presence of barbiturates. These findings are compared with patterns found in another fly fed other contaminants.

We used a four-gene (three mitochondrial) molecular dataset, fossil calibrations and molecular clock information to explore the phylogenetic relationships of the platypleurine cicadas and the timing and geography of their diversification. The earliest splits in the tribe were found to separate forest genera in Madagascar and equatorial Africa from the main radiation, and all of the Asian/Indian species sampled formed a younger clade nested well within the African taxa.

It is shown that although temperature was hypothesized to most influence the distributions of these ectotherms, moisture, and particularly humidity, was in fact usually paramount. Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) and C. marginalis (Robineau-Desvoidy) had the most widespread geographic and climatic distribution, while the forest-associated C. inclinata(Walker) was the least widespread. Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) and C. megacephala (Fabricius) had very similar predicted distributions that were restricted mainly to Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the coast of the Eastern Cape. Chrysomya chloropyga (Wiedemann) and Calliphora croceipalpis (Jaennicke) were the only species predicted to occur at high altitudes. Blowfly distributions restricted to part of the map area were predicted better than those that were more widespread in the region, presumably because species with extremely widespread distributions in a study area occupy nearly the whole range of variation of most predictor variables, leaving little variation with which themaximumentropy modelling method can discriminate between presence and absence of the organism.
