- Description: The inclusion of the right of access to social security in the Constitution did not meet with wholehearted approval in South Africa. This right, however, is of vital importance for the future upliftment of the country. The present social security system is based upon a clear distinction between social assistance and social insurance. There is a gap in current social security provisions in that the unemployed middle aged individual is not covered. Unemployment itself is one of the greatest challenges obscuring the implementation of a comprehensive social security system. The Constitutional right is to have ‘access’ to social security and the amount of resources at the state’s disposal is directly related to increasing this right, although it is true that a number of available resources are misspent. The state must take reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available resources, to achieve the progressive realisation of the right of access to social security. The principles of solidarity and ubuntu must be cultivated so that national social development becomes a concern for all citizens. There are numerous problems facing South Africans in attaining the goal of access to social security – even if national social development does become a priority. Budgetary constraints, poverty, unemployment, HIV/Aids and foreigners are examples of these. By making social security a priority for everyone, existing ideas (almost all of which have merit) may be converted into long-term solutions for poverty and unemployment. Currently, numerous opportunities to salvage the situation are being overlooked as a result of the lack of a comprehensive and structured plan to better the access to social security. The constitutional right of access to social security is enforceable, although the jurisprudence in this field remains underdeveloped. Conditions are currently favourable, within the country and beyond its borders, for an imaginative and concerted attempt to be made to find potential solutions. It is possible for resources to be increased and for tax benefits to be incorporated for businesses which have the capacity to contribute. The issue of defence spending is controversial, but could hold the key to lowering unemployment. Should jobs be created, it is likely that they will initially be of a temporary nature. Consequently, provisions are needed to ensure some guarantee of income in the lacuna between when a job is lost and another found. Ultimately, one thing is certain: the constitutional right of access to social security will only be complete once the people who are recipients of this right make sacrifices and create corresponding duties for themselves to ensure that the next generation of inhabitants of this country are not facing similar problems. The state’s goal should be to ensure that the basic rights which all people enjoy in terms of the Constitution (in particular the other socio-economic rights) are guaranteed for the duration of their existence, even if the level of benefits received by such people is low.

Pumping tests indicated unconfined conditions and thus the Neuman's method of analysis has been used. Transmissivities from pumping tests are within the range 4.7 m²/d to 13.6 m²/d with an average of 8.9m²/d. The low transmissivities seem to be a major limiting factor in the exploitation of the groundwater resources. Thus the sustainable borehole yields tend to be small, mean values ranging from 33 m²/d to 253 m²/d. Specific yield could not be determined from the pumping tests due to the lack of observation boreholes. Low chemical concentrations render the water suitable for irrigation of all crops, while neither total nor any individual concentrations present health hazards to human or livestock. An average recharge value of 47.7 mm/y was inferred from water table fluctuation method. Chloride mass balance technique in the same area indicates recharge value in the order of 67.4 mm/y. Because the chloride mass balance gives a long-term mean annual recharge, the recharge figure of 67.4 mm/y was adopted for the study area. Based on the abstractable proportion of recharge, the sustainably exploitable volume of groundwater of the order of 2.68 x 10⁷ m³/y was established. This volume is more than 100 times the estimated current demand for groundwater (1.35 x 10⁵ m³/d), implying that there are large volumes of surplus water, which can be utilised for irrigation.

- Description: Introduction: During the past decade, companies have examined their core business, and anything that was not related to this, or did not add value to their product, was outsourced. One of the functions which fell into this category was the distribution operation, or more commonly known as transportation (in and out bound). In many instances, the distribution function was given up for tender, and specialised transport businesses, called third party logistic providers, whose core business was transport, were given the opportunity of taking over the distribution function. Some progressive companies went a little beyond the traditional approach and created opportunities for their own employees to be involved in the newly created, outsourced distribution network. This was largely an empowerment opportunity, with the aim of creating SME’s (Small-Medium-Enterprises), and providing people from a previously disadvantaged background (black people and other ethnic minorities) the opportunity to go into a business enterprise for themselves. The latter, although, politically the correct thing to do, simultaneously created opportunities and problems. Many of the companies that empowered their own employees, through Owner-Driver schemes, used the driving competency levels as the main criteria for the transition process. The other required skills were often overlooked or ignored. This empowerment process was driven to promote “Black Economic Empowerment”, an important national imperative. Although this process was an honorable gesture on the part of many companies, the process often took place without much foresight The viability and long-term continuity of the business were not taken into account. It is the researchers personal view, based on interviews with O-D’s and companies operating O-D schemes that the O-D’s which were empowered to operate their own business ventures, had limited or insufficient business skills and the very businesses that were given to them to improve their lifestyle were at risk of becoming unviable enterprises. This is clearly evident in some of the schemes being operated by companies such as Autonet and South African Breweries (hereinafter referred to as SAB). Other Eastern Cape companies that operate Owner-Driver schemes include Italtile, Shatterprufe and Ready Mix Materials (hereinafter referred to as RMM), and according to Management consultants spoken to, have obtained mixed levels of success with their schemes. The above schemes were confirmed with the various companies mentioned.

The mandibular gland secretions and ovarial development of worker honeybees (Apis Mellifera) in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

- Description: The Eastern Cape is an area in which Apis mellifera capensis, A. m. scutellata and their hybrid are known to naturally occur. I investigated the mandibular gland profiles and ovarial development of queenright workers from 4 localities. Their queens were then removed to determine how these aspects changed upon queen loss. In addition, drifted bees were analysed in the same way to determine how these factors changed once they had gained entry to a foreign hive. The queenright bees, form all 4 localities were found to have 9HDA as the most abundant of the 5 fatty acids measured and all localities had small percentages of 9ODA in their mandibular gland secretions. This resulted in relatively high queenright 9ODA:10HDA and 9HDA:10HDAA ratios. Despite this the percentage of bees with undeveloped ovaries was consistent with their queenright status. The mean values of these 2 ratios were significantly higher in the bees from East London and Cradock than those from Port Elizabeth. Steynsburg's bees were intermediate in this regard. Upon queen loss, the bees from all 4 localities had an increase in the percentage of 9ODA but the other compound changes in varying ways. East London's bees were the only ones not to become significantly more queen-like after queen loss. After 14 days without a queen, the mean values of these 2 ratios were much higher in the bees from Port Elizabeth than those from the other localities. Certain individuals from Port Elizabeth had values of these ratios that exceeded those found in A. m. capensis queens. Port Elizabeth was the only locality to display any surrogate queens and exhibited the highest increase in the number of bees with partially or fully developed ovaries. While certain individuals from the other localities had values of these ratios that exceeded these values reported in A. m. scutellata queens, Steynsburg's bees were the only ones that did increase in in terms of the number of bees with developed ovaries subsequent. The bees from Steynsburg were shown to suppress the mandibular gland and ovarial development of drifters from Port Elizabeth while bees from East London did not.

The substituents included cholesterol (3a), estrone (3b), naphthol (3c) and phenoxy groups substituted with CH3 (3d), C(CH3)3 (at two positions, 3e), C(CH3)3 (3f), NO2 (3g), NH2 (3h), COH (3i), COOH (3j), and H (3k). In general, complexes containing electron-donating groups attached to the phenoxy ring (e.g. 3e and 3f) were found to be photochemically unstable with photobleaching quantum yields of the order of 10−3. In the presence of electron-withdrawing groups (3g, 3i, and 3j) the photobleaching quantum yields were of the order of 10−6 to 10−5. Singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) ranged from 0.01 to 0.73. The lowest ΦΔ was observed for the highly aggregated complex 3c. All the complexes showed aggregation at high concentrations. Electrochemical reduction using a thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry cell showed that the complexes become more monomeric following reduction.

- Description: In 1997 South Africa came out with a policy aimed at addressing the legacy of apartheid in respect of an unequal division of land in the country. About 3.5 million people were moved from rural and urban areas between 1960 and 1980 and deposited in the reserves or areas designed for the exclusive occupation of black people. The new land policy attempts to deal with the resultant problems. The policy advocates a three-pronged approach to land reform encompassing (i) land restitution, (ii) land redistribution and (iii) land tenure reform. A number of projects have been carried out under these three aspects. This study aims to investigate and evaluate the results of a completed land restitution case. The Mfengu of Tsitsikamma was chosen as a case study because the people have moved back and are now living on their land. The Mfengu were dispossessed of their land in 1977 by the apartheid government and their land was returned in 1994. Although this case was processed outside of the land restitution legislation (Restitution of Land Rights Act, 22 of 1994), all restitution cases where people return to their original land have to deal with the problems of resettlement. From its involvement in various involuntary resettlement projects, the World Bank concluded that the new communities of resettlers should be designed as a viable settlement system equipped with infrastructure and services and integrated in the regional socio-economic context. The host communities receiving the resettlers should be assisted to overcome possible adverse social and environmental effects from the increased population density. These concerns are valid for the South African situation, and the question is, whether this resettlement encapsulates the above. The goals of the research are twofold. To evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the resettlement project and its sustainability. In particular focussing on the constraints to the implementation of the land policy. Research questions include the following: How was the project carried out? Is the resettlement integrated into the socio-economic and development planning of the area? How viable and sustainable is the new settlement? What are the major problems and challenges facing this area and how can they be overcome?

- Description: Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) testing has been identified as one of the tools in the management of complex effluents in aquatic ecosystems. In South Africa, toxicity testing has not been required for regulatory purposes. Recently, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has adopted WET testing as a tool to evaluate the suitability of hazardous effluent for discharge into receiving environments. This has necessitated suitable procedures to be established for use in the South African situation. With the implementation of the new National Water Act (No 36 of 1998), industries have to comply with set standards to protect the aquatic environment. However, the South African Water Quality Guidelines for Aquatic Ecosystems have been set using international toxicity data, and it is not known if they are comparable with South African conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the tolerances of selected indigenous riverine invertebrates to complex saline effluents. The study investigated the effects of kraft mill effluent to Tricorythus tinctus, a tricorythid mayfly from the Sabie River, Mpumalanga, and the effects of a textile effluent to baetid mayflies of the Buffalo River, Eastern Cape. Indigenous riverine invertebrates were chosen as test organisms, as there is no toxicity data in South Africa which could be used to evaluate the level of protection afforded by the South African Water Quality Guidelines for Aquatic Ecosystems. The use of indigenous riverine invertebrates added the challenge of variability of a wild population, and the use of a complex effluent as toxicant added the variability of effluent composition. In this study, WET testing was used to determine the dilution of whole effluents required for discharge. Hazard-based guidelines were developed for the disposal of kraft and textile effluents. The level of environmental hazard posed by different effluent concentrations was ranked, and was related to the River Health Class. This indicated effluent concentrations that may be allowed to enter the aquatic environment, e.g. 3% effluent concentration guideline for both general kraft effluent and general textile effluent for the protection of a Class A river. This approach could contribute to the use of an Environmental Risk Assessment, approach for the management of complex effluents. A number of acute 96 hour toxicity tests were conducted following an unreplicated regression design, using kraft and textile effluents as toxicants, mayfly nymphs as test organisms, and river water as diluent and control. Test organisms were sampled from unimpacted, flowing-water riffle areas, and were exposed in recirculating artificial streams (or channels) to a range of effluent concentrations. Mortality was selected as end-point and observed twice daily. The experimental results showed the variability and acute toxicity of both kraft and textile mill effluents. Baetids were more sensitive (mean LC50=16% effluent concentration) to General Textile Effluent (GTE), but less sensitive to Post Irrigation Textile Effluent (PITE). Textile effluent (PITE) held in a holding dam were therefore less variable and less toxic; suggesting that stabilization of the effluent could have contributed to reduced toxicity. Effluent composition, e.g. higher calcium levels, may also have contributed to lowering toxicity. T. tinctus was sensitive to kraft effluents, but showed less variable responses to Irrigation Kraft Effluent than General Kraft Effluent. Toxicity test data indicated that GKE, IKE and GTE should not enter the aquatic environment without treatment, as they can cause adverse effects to aquatic biota. Both kraft and textile effluents must therefore be treated before discharge. Different responses to different effluent batches were probably due to effluent variability. The use of indigenous organisms, and not a standard laboratory organism, could also have contributed to variability. A hazard-based approach could be useful, as it will provide a consistent basis for deciding on the acceptability of impacts, while allowing natural site-specific differences to be taken into account.

- Description: In this half thesis the use of the garden as a metaphor for paradise has been explored. The English word “ paradise“ was derived from the Greek word “ paradeisos” which in turn was derived from the Old Avestana “ pairi-daeza,” meaning an enclosure. In Ancient Persia the concept applied to an enclosed garden in the modern sense of the word. For this reason the thesis begins with an examination of the development of the garden in this desert region. A more-or-less continuous chain of development in both the physical and allegorical nature of the garden is traced through history from these Ancient Persian beginnings to the height of Mughal architecture (epitomised by the Taj Mahal), by way of the Muslim expansion through Central Asia and Europe. While the core elements of garden design were set in Ancient Persian times, and recur throughout the period studied, the impact of Islam on the local Persian culture brought about a new development of allegorical meaning associated with the garden. This allegorical development reached its apex, too, in the Taj Mahal in which, it is argued, the metaphorical representation of paradise in the garden tomb was made astonishingly explicit. The research for this mini thesis was gathered from secondary sources, including many published books and academic papers, photographic and diagrammatic evidence of extant ancient gardens, and reproductions of carpet designs.

- Description: The introduction of outcomes-based education (OBE) in South Africa has led to a new learner-centred approach with an emphasis on the outcomes that the learners need to achieve. With this learner-centred focus has come a greater need for record keeping. It is now necessary to track each learner’s progress towards the attainment of the learning outcomes. This progress is tracked in relation to assessment standards that are defined for every learning outcome. These assessment standards define the results expected of learners at certain stages in their development. The new OBE system has emphasised accountability and this is expressed in a requirement to keep evidence to justify the assessment results given. The large numbers of learners and the increased managerial demand of OBE cause problems to educators who may find themselves unable to keep track of the learners’ progress under such conditions. This dissertation investigates the structure of the new OBE system as well as its assessment and evidence requirements. From this the features required from a support system for educators in an OBE environment are determined. The supporting processes needed to enable these features to be implemented, as well as the storage requirements of such a system are identified. In addition to OBE, the field of Computer Integrated Learning Environments (CILEs) and Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) are investigated and useful details identified are added to the requirements for an OBE support system. The dissertation then presents an object-oriented conceptual model of the items that need to be stored in order to allow the features of an OBE support system to be implemented. The relationships between these items are also indicated in this model.

The workers in the plant were consulted by survey and a variety of insights into the level of understanding of the epidemic, tolerance levels, expectations and so on were made. The quantification of these insights must be viewed with caution since the survey sample of 111 was relatively low for a workforce of circa 5500. Calculations in respect of representativity are included to facilitate calculated caution. It has been shown that the HIV/AIDS epidemic has a considerable current impact on the company and that this impact can be expected to grow considerably in the future. - Description: Alan Griffiths was born at Walton-on Thames, England in 1906. He was educated at Christ's Hospital and later at Oxford (under the tutelage of C.S. Lewis). At Oxford he read English literature and philosophy. After considerable inner turmoil he was converted to Christianity in 1931 and entered the Roman Catholic Church in 1933. As a novice Benedictine he was given the name Bede, and was finally ordained as a priest 1940. In 1955 Fr Bede went to India to start a Benedictine community with Dom Benedict Alapatt. He later moved to Kurisumala Ashram in Kerala, and finally, in 1968, to Shantivanam Ashram in Tamil Nadu. He died at Shantivanarn in 1993. Fr Bede was, and still is, regarded by many as a spiritual pioneer. This high regard stems from an appreciation of his spirituality which was rooted in a mystical experience of God. This thesis investigates aspects of Fr Bede's cosmic christology as they arise from his spirituality. The aim of this research is to show that Fr Bede’s cosmic christology that stems from an expression of a real mystical experience of Christ, as the source, sustainer and goal of the whole cosmos, offers both value and insight to Christian spiritual practice and the formulation of doctrine. What makes Fr Bede's spirituality so valuable is the manner in which he integrated East and West in his spirituality and person, coupled with his ability to draw upon that integration in reflecting and articulating his experience - which ultimately shaped his cosmic christology. In order to share his knowledge and experience of the cosmic Christ, Fr Bede draws upon linguistic and philosophical concepts from the East (and Hinduism in particular) as well as the language and theory arising from discoveries in the areas of quantum physics, microbiology and transpersonal psychology in the West. It is the primacy of spiritual experience, coupled with Fr Bede's ability to integrate the religions, cultures and world-views of the East and West within himself, which makes his cosmic christology so compelling.

- Description: This portfolio of work represents three research projects on issues related to teacher education. The research was undertaken at Dr. W.B. Rubusana College of Education over a period of three years. The first project is a situational analysis that attempts to determine whether the college is capable of meeting the challenges placed on it by the evolving South African Educational System. The key finding is that the college is not ready to embark on the changes required by the Ministry of Education chiefly because its educators and learners are seemingly not ready to embrace change. The second project is a case study that attempts to determine whether a group of 12 Senior Primary students at the college are able to interpret photographs of the local environment and as such provide evidence of their ability to be environmental educators through the medium of geography. The findings indicate that they are only able to read the photographs at a very superficial level. Their poor communication skills and their disadvantaged backgrounds seem to prevent them from achieving the level of thinking required for them to be effective environmental educators. The third project describes, analyses and evaluates a fieldwork study done with a class of Senior Primary students at the college. While the students did not achieve the necessary progression from 'look and see' to 'enquiry based' fieldwork the project was valuable in that it was an educative experience for both teacher and learner and provides evidence of the value of action research and reflective teaching.

Design, synthesis and evaluation of silver-specific ligands

- Description: Several series of ligands, designed to chelate silver(I) specifically in the presence of base metals, have been synthesised. The ligands include: - dithiodiamide compounds, prepared by the condensation of acetanilide derivatives with 1,2-dibromoethane; propanenitrile and propanoic ester derivatives prepared from pyridine-2-carbaldehyde via the Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction; and novel malonamide ligands from the reaction of diethyl malonate with a range of primary amines. The malonamide derivatives were prepared under both conventional thermal and microwave-assisted conditions, the latter proving to be highly efficient. The ligands were all characterised using a combination of spectroscopic and, where appropriate, elemental analysis; in one case, the structural assignment was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The fragmentation patterns in the electron-impact mass spectra of the malonamide derivatives have been explored using high-resolution and meta-stable peak scanning techniques. Complexes of the malonamide ligands with copper(II) and silver(I) have been synthesised, and examination of these complexes has revealed distinct differences in their co-ordination preferences towards silver(I) and copper(II). Tentative, computer-modelled structures for the complexes have been proposed using the available spectroscopic and elemental analysis data. Computer modelling, at the Molecular Mechanics level, has also been used to assess the capacity of the ligand systems to adopt conformations suitable for the chelation of tetrahedral silver(I). Solvent extraction studies have been undertaken using aqueous metal ion solutions and various organic solvents. The dithiodiamide derivatives typically presented solubility problems, but one of the ligands, N,N´-bis(3-chlorophenyl)-3,6-dithiaoctanediamide, exhibited significant but slow extraction of silver(I) into toluene. The malonamide derivatives, however, proved to be readily soluble in ethyl acetate and, in some cases, exhibited good to excellent selectivity for silver(I) in the presence of the base metals copper and lead. Atomic absorption analysis revealed rapid equilibration times (<15 min) and high extraction efficiencies over a wide pH range (2.78 - 9.0). Metal selectivity has been determined by ICP-MS analysis of the residual silver, copper and lead present in the aqueous phase after 15 min, and one of the ligands, N,N´-bis(2-benzylsulfanylethyl)malonamide, exhibits excellent (≥ 96 %) silver(I) specificity.

Effect of high energy diets on the productive and reproductive characteristics of young Bonsmara bulls

- Description: A study to evaluate the effect of feeding a high energy diet on the productive and reproductive characteristics of young bulls was carried out at two different locations in the Free State Province. Two trials were conducted with the aim of evaluating the effect of level of dietary energy and age of the bulls on their productive performance and reproductive characteristics. In the first trial, two levels of energy were fed to two groups of young (343 ± days) Bonsmara bulls. The high energy group HE (n=36) bulls were Phase-C performance tested in an official performance testing center and received a high energy diet for 112 days (28 days adaptation and 84 days testing). The medium energy group ME (n=18) bulls were phase-D performance tested and received a medium-energy diet for 140 days (28 days adaptation and 112 days testing). At the end of both performance testing periods, the productive performances and reproductive characteristics of the two groups were compared. The productive parameters compared included final live body weight (FLW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily gain per day of age (ADA) and body condition score (BCS). The reproductive parameters compared between groups included scrotal circumference (SC), semen volume (Vol) and concentration (SConO), mass movement (MV), linear motility (LM), percentage live sperm (LS), as well as percentage of total abnormalities: major (MD) and minor (MinD). The results of this trial indicated that in general, bulls from the HE group showed a significant (p<0.01) higher FLW, BCS, ADG and ADA, but a significant (p<0.01) lower volume and concentration of the ejaculate, lower mass movement and linear motility, lower percentage of live sperm and higher percentage of major defects and significantly (p<0.05) higher percentage of minor defects than the bulls from the ME group. In the second trial, 36 young Bonsmara bulls were divided into two groups according to their age at the arrival at an official Phase-C performance testing center. Older bulls (OB) (n=19) and younger bulls (YB) (n=17) all received a high energy diet for 112 days (28 days adaptation and 84 days testing). At the end of the Phase-C test the productive performances and reproductive characteristics of the two groups were compared. The animals from both groups that did not pass the Phase-C test, either due to poor performance or not meeting the breed standards, were slaughtered at an official abattoir and their scrotums and carcass characteristics were also compared. The productive parameters compared between the two groups included final live body weight (FLW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily gain per day of age (ADA), body condition score (BCS), feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass weight both warm (CWW) and cold (CWC), as well as dressing percentage (CDP) and fat grade (CFG). The reproductive parameters compared between the two groups included scrotal circumference (SC), total scrotal weight (TSW), scrotal fat (SF), scrotal skin weight (SSW), paired testes weight (PTW), scrotal skin thickness (SST), total testes circumference (TTC), total testicle volume (TTV), weight of epididimis / spermatic cord (WESC), volume of epididymis / spermatic cord (VESC) and the percentage of bulls with depressed spermatogenesis (PBDS), semen concentration (SConO), mass movement (MV), linear motility (LM), percentage live sperm (LS), percentage of total abnormalities: major (MD) and minor(MinD) as well as the percentage of bulls with depressed spermatogenesis (PBDS). The results of this trial indicated that in general, the younger bulls showed a significant (p<0.05) higher ADG, but a significant (p<0.05) lower ADA than the older bulls. Regarding the reproductive organs compared, the younger bulls showed a significantly (p<0.01) higher total scrotal weight, scrotal fat and scrotal skin weight and thickness. No significant differences were observed on the testicular parameters measured between the two groups. In addition, both weight (WECS) and volume (VECS) of the epididymis / spermatic cord were significantly (P<0.05) higher in the older bulls. In general, the younger group showed poorer semen characteristics. A significantly (p<0.01) lower sperm concentration and linear movement and a significantly (p<0.05) higher percentage of major defects were recorded on the younger bulls, when compared to the older bulls. About half of the bulls in each group showed clear signs of depressed spermatogenesis in their seminiferous tubules, during the histological examination of testicular tissue. The results of this study indicates that high energy diets are beneficial for the productive performance of young bulls (growth rate, BCS and carcass characteristics), but have a detrimental effect on the reproductive characteristics of young bulls. The effect of high energy diets on both the productive and reproductive performances of young beef bulls are more pronounced at a younger age. High energy diets resulted in heavier scrotums in the younger bulls when compared to the older bulls, as a direct result of a higher fat deposition in this region without any relevant effect on testicular size. No intra-testicular fat deposition was observed. The scrotal fat observed in high energy fed young bulls accumulated mainly in the neck of the scrotum, although subcutaneously. These fat deposits may impair testicular thermoregulation and negatively affect the spermatogenesis in the seminiferous tubules, reducing both sperm quantity and quality. Further studies on the effect of high energy diets on bull fertility (as well as on rams and buck) are recommended, to evaluate the extension and duration of its detrimental effects on subsequent fertility.

- Description: While sulphate-enriched wastewaters are generated in a number of industrial processes, such as tanning, paper manufacture and metals processing, the principal contributors to large-scale pollution from this source in South Africa are the gold and coal mining industries. Both biological and physico-chemical processes, set in train by mining operations, give rise to the oxidation of sulphur species, and the resultant generation of AMD. The Vaal River system is most affected and receives large tonnages of mining related salinity as both direct discharges, and in diffuse runoff flows. The long-term burden of this problem, and sustaining ongoing treatment over the time-frames involved will almost certainly resort to the community inhabiting the area, notwithstanding progressive mine closure legislation and comprehensive regulation governing the polluterpays principle. The volume and time-frame of the AMD problem, and the need for a long-term and sustainable response has focused interest in biological treatment approaches. These have concentrated on active and passive treatment systems, both of which rely on microbial activity related to the biological sulphur cycle. Notwithstanding the reactor type, and the particular treatment approach used, widespread application of active AMD treatment has not yet been seen on any large scale. Singular factors constraining process development are bioreactor design, cost of bioreactor construction, and the cost of the carbon source and electron donor for the biological sulphate reduction process. The SRB are able to utilise only a limited range of small organic molecules. The studies reported here were motivated by the need to evaluate low-cost options and the treatment of high volume AMD flows. This has focussed research activity on bioprocess developments using complex organic compounds derived from waste streams as electron donor sources, and the integration of AMD treatment with other waste treatment objectives. The co-disposal of organic wastes with AMD treatment would enable the development of an 'integrated resource management' approach to the problem, including sustainability of treatment operations over the long time-frames involved. Apart from the cost advantages accrued to waste treatment, the recovery of the treated water as a resource to the wider community provides a potentially important value-added function to the combined operation. , KMBT_363 , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

The influence of a performance management programme on the achievement of organisational and individual goals : a case study

- Description: Many organisations are continuously searching for methods which can be used to improve performance. One such method is by means of implementing a performance management programme. This research study addresses the influence that a performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual performance. To achieve this objective a comprehensive literature study was performed to determine the views on performance, and on performance management programmes. The study also included an investigation into the extent to which a performance management programme should be aligned with organisational and individual goals. Questionnaires, developed from the literature study, were distributed amongst randomly selected respondents, in order to determine the extent to which a specific organisation manages performance, in line with the guidelines provided by the literature study. The information obtained from the questionnaires were compared with the guidelines provided by the literature study in order to identify shortcomings in the influence that the performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual goals at the selected organisation. The final step of this study entailed the formulation of recommendations. Three of these recommendations are regarded as critical to ensure the successful improvement of performance by means of a performance management programme: Firstly, it is of utmost importance that training and development, and the necessary resources to achieve objectives is provided. Secondly, feedback forms an integral part of a performance management programme. Those who provide feedback, need to acquire the necessary skills, so as to ensure that both positive and negative feedback is given to employees, which could ultimately enhance performance. Thirdly, the success of a performance management programme resides with both management and employees. Management need to be committed to the programme, and the well-being of their employees. Management also needs to be able to eliminate problems that negatively influence performance. On the other hand, employees need to realise that a performance management programme is not only linked to pay, but also the development of each individual, and the improvement of performance.
