The reduction of adolescent pregnancy is vital for achieving the sustainable human, health social and economic development of society at large. Culturally sensitive interventions to prevent adolescent pregnancies not only integrate the communities' norms, values, practices and behavioural patterns into the intervention's design and implementation but also the historical, social and economic contexts in which they exist. Progress has been made on the research on health promotion and education in South Africa; however communities are often not consulted on the design and conduct of health promotion research projects.The aim of the study was to develop and implement culturally sensitive and appropriate health promotion activities for the prevention of adolescent pregnancy in Grahamstown, Glenmore and Ndwayana communities in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.Two community based organisations and community care workers associated with them participated in this Community Based Participatory Research using the PEN-3 cultural model. The first phase of this study involved semi-structured interviews carried out with 14 community care workers to identify factors and consequences of adolescent pregnancies in their respective communities. The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and coded using NVivo® 2010 software. The PEN 3 cultural model was adopted in the studyto address the socio-cultural factors contributing to adolescent pregnancy in the communities. The second phase involved a series of interactive workshops with CCWs for a participatory development of the facilitator's manual. Responses from CCWs informed the design of this study's intervention strategies. A facilitator's manual was developed to implement health promotion intervention, leading to the third phase of this study. The guided implementationof the health promotion intervention for the prevention of adolescent pregnancy was carried out over a period of 14 months and evaluated in the final phase of the study. The facilitator's manual was modified based on feedback fromCCWs, on possible improvements and cultural appropriateness. Readability testing guided the final modification of the manual. According to the community care workers, there were a number of adolescents who fell pregnant in their communities each year. The CCWs identified the influence of family members, friends and other stakeholders as contributory factors to adolescent pregnancy. They identified the lack of parental support in informing and educating adolescents about sexual health. Adolescents themselves lacked the maturity to recognise the risks and consequences of adolescent pregnancy. The negative perceptions of contraception in the community were discouraging contraceptive use amongst the adolescents. However, the results showed that enablers such as home and school visits done by the community care workers can be utilised to prevent adolescent pregnancy. Other factors included lack of health promotion materials and activities with information about preventing of adolescent pregnancy, and if available, the material is in English, that the adolescents may not comprehend. Socio-economic factors such as poverty, the Child Support Grant, cross generational relationships and coerced sex further contributed to adolescent pregnancy in the communities.CCWs identified the need for a more comprehensive health promotion intervention to prevent of adolescent pregnancy. A facilitator's manual addressing the prevention of adolescent pregnancy was developed and modified through a series participatory workshops with the community care workers.The facilitator's manual was used by CCWs to conducthealth promotion activities encouraging the prevention of adolescent pregnancies within the community's clinics, schools and during home visits. Community based participatory research methods and the PEN-3cultural model were used to develop this culturally sensitive and community specific adolescent pregnancy intervention for and by the CCWs. The participatory development of the facilitator's manual and the regular interactive workshops with the CCWs were strengthened by embedding this project into the development programs of the two non-governmental organisations contributing to sustainable development programs for women and children.

Changes in household food security, nutrition and food waste along an agro-ecological gradient and the rural-urban continuum in mid-sized South African towns

- Description: The lack of dietary diversity is a severe problem experienced by most poor households globally. Most poor communities are at high risk of inadequate intake of micronutrients resulting from diets dominated by starchy staples. The present study considered the diets, dietary diversities and food security of women of reproductive age between 15-49 years, households and communities along the rural-urban continuum in three mid-sized towns situated along an agro-ecological gradient in South Africa. A 48-hour dietary recall was performed across two seasons (twice in summer and once in winter) and focus group discussions were held to gather all information including food abundance, seasons of food scarcity as well as coping strategies which households employ during periods of food shocks. Households were further asked to quantify any type of food waste that they could have generated in the previous 48 hours. Nutritional status of children under the age of five in all three towns was also measured using height-for-age (HAZ) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) as indicators of stunting and wasting respectively. The household surveys were conducted with 554 women randomly selected in rural, peri-urban and urban locations of Richards Bay, Dundee and Harrismith. For nutritional status, the sample consisted of 216 children who were randomly selected from the sampled households in rural, peri-urban and urban locations of the study sites. Household Dietary Diversity Scores (HDDS) and Women’s Dietary Diversity Scores (WDDS) were calculated from the food items consumed by each household and each woman over a two-day period, respectively. Household food access was also measured for each household using Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). The mean WDDS and HDDS for the wettest site of Richards Bay (3.8±0.29 and 8.44±1.72, respectively) was significantly higher than at Dundee (3.4±0.30 and 7.76±1.63, respectively) and Harrismith (3.5±0.27 and 7.83±1.59, respectively) which were not different from one another. The mean HFIAS for Dundee (9.39±7.13) was significantly higher than that in Richards Bay (5.57±6.98) and Harrismith (6.43±6.59) which were not significantly different from one another. Dietary diversity scores were also significantly higher in urban locations than in peri-urban and rural ones whilst HFIAS was significantly lower in the urban locations than peri-urban and rural locations. There was lower dependence on food purchasing in Richards Bay compared to Dundee and Harrismith where the majority of the population was purchasing most of their food. The majority of Richards Bay households were involved in subsistence agriculture and also produced a surplus for sale, as well as collecting wild foods, which improved food security, unlike Dundee and Harrismith. Food insecurity was higher in rural and peri-urban areas compared to urban areas. In all towns, food was always available throughout the year but was beyond the reach of many households. In urban areas food was readily available and only limited by access, whereas rural populations have limited access to affordable food and face higher prices. The peri-urban populations were more food insecure because of high levels of poverty, unemployment and lack of access/entitlements to land. Periurban dwellers are therefore more sensitive to changes in incomes and food prices because they lack safety nets to absorb income or price shocks as they purchase more, rather than growing their own food. Household dietary diversity was significantly negatively correlated with household food access, that is households with low HDDS had higher HFIAS scores. Due to high levels of food insecurity, a greater percentage of children under the age of five years were stunted (35 %) and wasted (18 %). There were no significant differences in stunting along the agro-ecological gradient, along the rural-urban continuum and sex of child. However, significant differences were observed in child wasting along the agro-ecological gradient with Harrismith having more wasted children than the other two towns, which were not significantly different from each other. Significant differences were also observed between MUAC and sex of child where male children had higher MUAC than females. Wasting was significantly negatively associated with HDDS, with children from households with low HDDS tending to have large MUAC thus showing an inverse association among HDDS and obesity. However, further studies are needed to confirm this finding. In general food insecurity was closely associated with low wealth, food expenditure, large household size and limited access to land. The study did not find any significant role in the use of wild foods and social grants in improving food security for those households who were consuming wild foods and those receiving social grants. Although a greater percentage of households were food insecure, significant amounts of unprepared food (495±179 g per household) were wasted in Richards Bay alone in 48 hours mainly because the food had passed the best before date or had visibly gone bad. The amount of food waste was closely significantly negatively associated with household size. In general, the prevalence of food insecurity and wasting followed the agro-ecological gradient, with households in Richards Bay where the area.

Evaluation of low-cost technology options for sustainable water supply and sanitation in two peri-urban areas of Lusaka, Zambia: opportunities and constraints

- Description: Presently, at least 70% of the total urban population in Zambia resides in peri-urban areas. Peri-urban settlements are characterized by high population growth, high poverty levels and inadequate access to water and sanitation which often result in increased prevalence of diseases. The situation is even made worse because of the position that many local authorities have taken regarding the implementation of infrastructure and service development in these settlements. Local authorities in developing countries have continuously focused on implementation of traditional and unsustainable technologies for service provision to meet the demand despite the technologies’ inability to serve the rapidly growing peri-urban areas. These technologies have high costs, lack proper operation and maintenance, and are not affordable to majority of peri-urban residents. Therefore, this study was set out to identify and evaluate the existing and possible low-cost technology options for sustainable water supply and sanitation in two selected peri-urban areas of Lusaka, Zambia, namely Kanyama and Chazanga. This was achieved through a household survey conducted in the selected communities. Questionnaires and focus group discussions were held in the respective areas to obtain baseline data on the current water supply and sanitation situation, the type of technologies used, challenges faced regarding water and sanitation technologies, and to get the communities perceptions and preferences of different technology options. Thereafter, a Multi-Criterion Analysis methodological approach was used to assess the selected technologies by the communities, taking into consideration of the economic, socio-cultural, technical, institutional and environmental aspects. Results from the study revealed that a few low-cost water supply and sanitation technologies are feasible for peri-urban areas. For Chazanga, communal taps, boreholes, protected wells, and rain water harvesting were found to be feasible for water supply. For sanitation, on-site sanitation services such as compost toilets, dry toilets, as well as Ventilated Improved Pits (VIP) and Pour-flush, Fossa Alterna and the Urine Diversion Dry Toilet (UDDT) are some of the low-cost technologies that can be implemented in the area. The VIP is suitable for households that rely on water from communal taps for their use. As majority of households in the area have taps on their plots, the Pour-flush can be an alternative. The Fossa Alterna and the Urine Diversion Dry Toilet (UDDT) have low initial cost and can accommodate different households. Additionally, the area has a lower household size and majority of the residents in the area landlords, which makes it easy to teach users how the toilet operates as well as its maintenance. For Kanyama, feasible and sustainable low-cost water supply facilities include boreholes and communal taps. Kanyama has limited plot sizes thereby causing the challenge of implementing infrastructure such as rainwater harvesting. Additionally, continuous increase in urban population in the area, coupled with the construction of unregulated households and sanitation facilities, renders protected wells not feasible to implement in Kanyama. In terms of sanitation, wet on-site sanitation facilities such as Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines are accepted by the community. The VIP does not require water for use and if properly constructed can be used as a bathroom. The Pour-flush toilet is also another alternative for provision of sanitation in the area. However, the latrine can be expensive to construct for majority of the residents. Dry sanitation such as the Urine Diversion Dry Toilet (UDDT) is not feasible for Kanyama. The UDDT requires continuous awareness on its use especially in rented households where tenants are constantly changing. The method of evaluating appropriate technology options for peri-urban areas and thereafter letting the users from the communities choose from the proposed technologies ensures a participatory approach. Results from Multi-Criterion Analysis (MCA) showed that stakeholders’ influence is essential for the selection of sustainable technology options. Mineralogical variation in the basal Upper Zone, Bushveld Igneous Complex, South Africa: implications for ore genesis and mineral extraction

Evidence for a biological control-induced regime shift between floating and submerged invasive plant dominance in South Africa

The negative consequences of these are costly both economically and ecologically. They form dense mats on the water's surface that deplete resources such as light and oxygen to the submerged community, which creates anoxic conditions, reduces biodiversity and limits access to freshwater. The past thirty years of South African invasive plant research and the implementation of nationwide biological control programmes has led to widespread control of these species in many degraded systems. Such initiatives are aimed at restoring access to potable freshwater and increasing native biodiversity. However, in recent years, where there has been a decline in floating invasive plant populations, an increase in the establishment and spread of submerged invasive plant species has been observed. Species such as Brazilian waterweed (Egeria densa (Planch.) (Hydrocharitaceae)) and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum (L.) (Haloragaceae)) have been recorded in South African freshwater systems, posing significant threats to aquatic ecosystems. This thesis proposes that the biological control of floating invasive plants, which occurs in numerous dams and rivers nationwide, is the catalyst of a regime shift from floating invasive to submerged invasive plant dominance. Regime shifts are large and often sudden changes in the key structure and functioning of ecosystems, and studies into their occurrence and driving mechanisms broadens understanding of community structures and can guide effective resource management. In order to explore the existence of this new regime shift, a multi-platform approach using controlled experiments and ecological modelling techniques was employed. A model system was created consisting of a floating invasive (Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae)), a submerged invasive (E. densa) and an ecologically analogous submerged native plant species (Lagarosiphon major (Ridl.) Moss (Hydrocharitaceae)). A suite of experiments was conducted to explore the interactions between the floating and submerged plants under varying regimes of floating plant biological control and levels of nutrient loading. These experiments revealed a competitive advantage of the invasive E. densa over the native L. major that increased by 86% under heavy nutrient loading. The relative growth rate and accumulated biomass of E. densa was significantly higher for plants grown in the presence of biologically controlled P. stratiotes (compared to insect free plants). This demonstrates a high capacity for the invasive E. densa to capitalise on resources made newly available through the biological control of the floating plants. In contrast, the native L. major fared poorly when grown in the presence of the floating P. stratiotes, regardless of applied biological control measures. The experimental observations were then used to parameterise a mathematical model, built to provide a holistic understanding of the individually assessed interactions which work together as the driving mechanisms underpinning the newly identified regime shift. This thesis utilised a multi-platform approach to build the first body of evidence in support of a newly recognised regime shift between floating invasive and submerged invasive plant dominance, as driven by biological control. The results indicate that a reduction in the nutrient loading of South Africa's freshwater systems will reduce negative impacts of submerged invasive macrophytes, whilst increasing system resilience against future invasion. The evidence presented has the potential to better inform management of South Africa's freshwater systems and highlights the importance of integrating multi-trophic interactions when considering future invasive plant management. This research also opens up a multitude of possibilities for studies into submerged plant invasion mechanisms and resilience of native macrophyte communities in South Africa, and further afield.

A survey of the professional identity of clinical psychologists in South Africa

- Description: The mental health care needs of South Africa have shifted significantly in the postapartheid context of changing political and socioeconomic landscapes. However, the extent to which clinical psychologists’ professional identity has responded accordingly has been unclear. By establishing the practice patterns and values that should be central to the profession according to the literature, and ascertaining the extent to which these are reflected among professionals at this time, this study facilitates a re-evaluation of the professional identity of clinical psychologists in South Africa. To this end, an online survey method was used to collect data from a representative sample of 877 participants, i.e. 29,09% of the population of clinical psychologists in South Africa. Statistical analyses were implemented to address a number of key research questions concerning aspects which characterise professional identity, namely: demographic profile; work settings and roles (practices); and theoretical perspective, beliefs and attitudes (values). Findings suggest that, demographically, clinical psychologists do not mirror the clients they serve, and also that there is a large proportion of the population for whom psychological services remain inaccessible and/or inappropriate. Furthermore, the professional identity of clinical psychologists currently does not comprise practices and values which meet the mental health care needs of South Africa. A significant recommendation of the research is its endorsement of the National Health Insurance model given the promise of its role in ensuring psychology remains relevant. It is recommended that future studies expand on these findings qualitatively, and compare clinical psychology with other mental health care fields. Universities are also urged to relook at their training curricula and ensure that trainees are made of aware of issues of policy, and that areas of research and psychological assessment in complex environments are prioritized.

- Description: This study investigates organisational culture and shared values that currently exist at Saint’s Bistro in Grahamstown along with the desired organisational culture and desired values. In particular it explores possible discrepancies between the two using the reliable and valid Competing Values Framework (CVF) and its matched scale, the Organisational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) and the Shared Values Survey. McDonald and Gandz (1992: 64-67) discovered 24 shared values that correlate with modern business and where each value ties in with one of the four quadrants of the CVF. The researcher found a study conducted by Burchell and Saele (2011: 512) which is a cultural study based on the CVF working in conjunction with shared values survey to analyse a situation and it presented an improved means of investigating culture and values related facets within an organisation. The aim of this study is to examine the existing culture and subsequently make recommendations that can create alignment between what is currently experienced and what is desired in the organisation, if it is found that misalignment exists. This research presents a study using a paper based survey conducted in a restaurant in Grahamstown, South Africa. The results are based on the use of the OCAI in conjunction with organisational shared values profiles. The study revealed that there is no significant gap between the current organisational culture and the desired organisational culture within the organisation. Due to these findings, the research established that a structured strategy for maintaining the organisational culture should be developed in order to sustain the existing organisational culture that can be used when recruiting and on-boarding new employees in the future. The research is significant in that it highlighted a link between the competing values framework and the shared values survey and this will contribute to the effective analysis of organisational culture in future culture research.

Comparative fish ecology in three periodically connected rivers in the upper Zambezi and Okavango ecoregions

- Description: The Upper Zambezi, Kavango and Kwando rivers are three periodically interlinked floodplain rivers which share the same Upper Zambezian floodplain ichthyofauna. The aim of this thesis was to compare the biology and ecology of the fish communities in these three rivers. The objective was to test the hypothesis that fish community composition and assemblage structure, fish diets, food web structure and trophic dynamics, fish growth rates and total mortality are influenced by the differing flood magnitudes of the three rivers, in support of the flood pulse concept. To understand the abiotic characteristics of each river, water temperature, flood regime, total dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations and water quality parameters were measured and compared between rivers. Water temperatures varied seasonally, and seven day moving averages peaked above 30 °C in January, and fell to between 16 and 19 °C in June. The Zambezi River had the largest flood (6.14 m), followed by the Kavango River (3.80 m), while the Kwando River had the smallest flood (0.65 m). Total dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations were low in the Kavango and Zambezi Rivers (0.2 - 0.6 mg/l), and slightly higher in the Kwando River (<1 mg/l). Conductivity, total dissolved solids and total dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations decreased with the flood (dilution effect). Using biomass catch per unit effort data from experimental gillnets, fish community composition and assemblage structure was described, and differed between rivers in all hydrological seasons. In the Zambezi and Kavango rivers, fish assemblages varied with hydrological season as a result of the homogenising influence of the flood pulse, while in the Kwando River fish assemblages did not differ seasonally as flood pulses were small and often irregular. Differences in community composition were attributed to the abundance of Hydrocynus vittatus, a large bodied open water predator, in the Zambezi and Kavango rivers, and its relative absence in the Kwando River. Based on the results of the community composition, six focus species were chosen that were abundant and representative of the various feeding modes and life history strategies of the fish community. These were the striped robber Brycinus lateralis, sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus, blunttooth catfish Clarias ngamensis, African pike Hepsetus cuvieri, silver catfish Schilbe intermedius and purpleface largemouth Serranochromis macrocephalus. Stomach contents analysis was then used to compare the feeding ecology of the six example species between rivers. Clarias gariepinus, C. ngamensis and S. intermedius were piscivorous in the Zambezi and Kavango rivers, and preyed upon more invertebrates in the Kwando River, while Hepsetus cuvieri and S. macrocephalus were piscivorous in all three rivers. Differences in diets were attributed to seasonal prey abundance, with prey fishes abundant during falling and low water when the Zambezi and Kavango rivers were sampled, while invertebrates were abundant during rising and high water when the Kwando River was sampled. Prey mastication by B. lateralis made prey identification difficult. For other predators, the usefulness of stomach contents analysis for dietary descriptions was restricted by the high proportion of empty stomachs. As a result, whole ecosystem stable isotope analysis was used to gain a holistic understanding of the food web structure and fish feeding ecology of the three rivers. The Zambezi and Kavango river food webs were supported by C enriched resources such as C4 and C3 riparian vegetation from the floodplain, while the Kwando River food web was based on C depleted resources such as filamentous algae and aquatic macrophytes. The Zambezi River food web had a restricted nitrogen range, with reduced food chain length and the predators in this river did not occupy such elevated trophic positions compared to in the Kavango and Kwando river food webs. This was attributed to the overfishing of the primary and tertiary consumers in the Zambezi River, a phenomenon known to reduce food chain length. Focussing on predator communities, in the Zambezi and Kavango rivers, H. vittatus isotopic niche width was large and overlapped significantly with most other predators, while in the Kwando River predator niches were more distinct. This supported previously proposed hypotheses by describing H. vittatus as a dominant predator which excludes all other fishes by predation or competition. Despite the dominance of H. vittatus, C. gariepinus occupied the position of top predator in all three rivers, and information on the habitat use, feeding habits and trophic niches of the serranochromine cichlids added understanding of their ecology. Lastly, age was determined using sectioned sagittal otoliths for C. gariepinus, C. ngamensis, S. intermedius and S. macrocephalus and using whole asteriscus otoliths for B. lateralis and H. cuvieri, and growth was modelled using the von Bertalanffy growth equation. Growth performance was high in the Zambezi and Kavango rivers, and lower in the Kwando River, most likely in response to the varying flood magnitudes. Total mortality rates, estimated using Hoenig’s maximum-age based equation, were high in the Zambezi River as a result of the high fishing pressure on this river. Overall floodplain fish ecology in the Zambezi, Kavango and Kwando rivers was influenced by the flood pulse, as was predicted by the flood pulse concept. Periodic and equilibrium life history strategists were found to adapt either to the pulsing environments of the Zambezi and Kavango rivers, or to the more stable environment of the Kwando River, and large bodied, long lived periodic strategists such as C. gariepinus tended to be highly plastic and able to thrive in most conditions. Periodic and equilibrium life history strategists were found to adapt either to the pulsing environments of the Zambezi and Kavango rivers, or to the more stable environment of the Kwando River, and large bodied, long lived periodic strategists such as C. gariepinus tended to be highly plastic and able to thrive in most conditions. Sistering and sexual socialisation: a psychosocial study of Xhosa women’s ‘sex and reproduction talk’ with their sisters

Moreover, I examine why these women emotionally invest in certain discourses over others in their sisterly sex talk. The psychosocial framework combines discursive psychology with a psychoanalytic approach to explore both ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ processes involved in sexual socialisation within sistering. Psychoanalytic concepts were used to ‘thicken’ the discursive reading of the text. Five isiXhosa-speaking, middle aged and working class women were the participants of the study. The Free Associated Narrative Interview was used to collect the data thus participants were encouraged to convey their experiences of sex talk and reproduction within their sisterly relationships with minimal interruptions from the interviewer. Analysis suggests that the women drew on two broad interpretative repertoires in order to construct their sisters as sexual subjects: a repertoire of secrecy, and a repertoire of responsibilisation and risk. Furthermore, sisterly sex talk was constructed as a complex interchange of shifting positions of openness and power due to two coinciding identities - that of mother and of peer taken up by the participants. A psychoanalytic reading of the data suggests an emotional investment in exemplifying responsibility. The participants experienced anxiety in negotiating a sexualised femininity and projected their sexual desire onto their sister to defend against anxiety in their talk; this enabled them to feel as though they were ‘doing’ sex better than their sisters.

Factors affecting the implementation of the Water Services Provision (WSP) strategy at Amathole District Municipality (ADM)

Since this change, no study has been done to explore how the centralized water service strategy has so far been implemented at ADM. The aim of this exploratory qualitative study was to describe how ADM implemented its centralized water strategy and also assess the extent of alignment of strategy execution using Higgins’ (2005) 8 “S” model. Purposively, a total of five senior managers were identified and interviewed in East London as they were intimately involved in the daily operation of the water service provision over the years. Data gathered through audio recorded, in-depth and semi-structured interviews with each of the senior managers and also documented reports on Water Service Provision (WSP) were analyzed using thematic analysis into meaningful patterns reflecting each of the components of Higgins’ (2005) 8 “S” model. Findings of this qualitative study reveal that senior managers had different but complementary views of what strategy they were implementing at ADM. More importantly, the implementation of centralized water services provision model by ADM was characterized by deep and persistent vacancies of key technical but also managerial positions in the new structure. Furthermore while human and financial resources were inadequate to match with the depth and variety of changes necessary to have the requisite number of staff, ADM implemented the centralized water service strategy with poor skills mix which negatively impacted on quality of water service. While ADM had ten espoused shared values, none of these were commonly and widely shared by employees in their day-to-day world of work. Instead, employee’s behavior at ADM was practically shaped by the emergent values of cooperation, and employee care and recognition. Thus there was misalignment between espoused and practiced shared values. Furthermore there was also recurrent and deep misalignment between structure, staff, resources and water quality systems which compounded the difficulties experienced by ADM in pursuit of centralized water service provision. While the use of outsourced mechanical and electrical services was a remedy to staff shortages and the lack of skills mix, it ultimately further aggravated the financial challenges of ADM by draining more of the already limited financial resources. Recommendations for improving the implementation of centralized water service strategy and areas for further research are suggested.

These organisations are including new offerings covering the financial, health, insurance and mobile education services. The potential exists for these organisations to launch products that are substandard and which either do not take into account customer needs or do not comply with current legislations or regulations. Most telecommunication organisations have a well-defined enterprise risk management program, to ensure compliance to King III, however risk management processes specifically for new products and services might be lacking. The responsibility usually resides with the product managers for the implementation of robust products; however they do not always have the correct skillset to ensure adherence to governance requirements and therefore might not be aware of which laws they might not be adhering to, or understand the customers’ requirements. More complex products, additional competition, changes to technology and new business ventures have reinforced the need to manage risk on telecommunication products. Failure to take risk requirements into account could lead to potential fines, damage the organisation’s reputation which could lead to customers churning from these service providers. This research analyses three periods of data captured from a mobile telecommunication organisation to assess the current status quo of risk management maturity within the organisation’s product and service environment. Based on the analysis as well as industry best practices, a risk management framework for products is proposed that can assist product managers analyse concepts to ensure adherence to governance requirements. This could assist new product or service offerings in the marketplace do not create a perception of distrust by consumers.

Investigating herbivory and plant origin on tall-statured grasses in South Africa

- Description: South African riparian zones have been heavily degraded through anthropogenic activities such as dam construction and extraction of water for irrigation, which has resulted in a loss of ecosystem services and functioning. A consequence of such disturbances to riparian areas is in their susceptibility to invasive alien species (IAS). One such IAS is the giant reed, Arundo donax L. (Poaceae), introduced to South Africa in the 1700s largely for erosion control. Arundo donax has since greatly expanded in the country and is now one of the most abundant IAS. Arundo donax has been found to displace native vegetation and in South Africa this will most likely lead to the displacement of the native tall-statured grasses, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. and Phragmites mauritianus Kunth. This study aimed to enhance our understanding of the tall-statured grasses A. donax, P. australis and P. mauritianus to better manage them in riparian areas. For A. donax, biological control is seen as the most viable option to control stands in the long-term. However, before such a programme is put in place, it is important to first collect baseline data that can be used to guide the direction of the biological control project in South Africa. For the Phragmites spp., despite being a dominant vegetative type in riparian areas, very little is known about their status in South Africa. Furthermore, there have been increasing reports of both Phragmites species having an expansion of their range and abundance. In North America, there has been a similar trend of reed expansion and through molecular work it was determined that a cryptic invasion has occurred with the introduction of an invasive non-native haplotype from Europe. It is therefore unknown if Phragmites spp. populations are expanding due to anthropogenic activities or due to a cryptic invasion. To address these shortfalls in knowledge the study investigated the tall-statured grasses in two parts; firstly, molecular techniques are used to explore the plant origin and genetic diversity of A. donax, P. australis and P. mauritianus and secondly using the Enemy Release Hypothesis as a framework, herbivore assemblages for each reed was determined across their distribution in South Africa. Molecular-techniques determined that both P. australis and P. mauritianus had only one haplotype - known as haplotype K and haplotype V respectively, across their distribution. For P. australis, haplotype K shares a close connection with populations from a Mediterranean lineage and this was further confirmed with a shared grass-waxy band. The direction and timing of genetic exchange between the two regions could not be ascertained and thus still remains unknown. Microsatellite analysis determined that both Phragmites spp. had a high genetic diversity compared to worldwide lineages. With no evidence of any cryptic invasions of haplotypes from other regions, both Phragmites spp. populations are likely to be native to South Africa. For A. donax all populations across South Africa were determined to be haplotype M1; a cosmopolitan haplotype that has an ancient native range in Afghanistan and Pakistan (Indus Valley). Populations were found to have no genetic diversity and thus can be considered one clone. A pre-introductory survey determined a list of herbivores associated with each tall- statured grass. For A. donax, a total of seven herbivores were found. Of these, one herbivore, a galling wasp, Tetramesa romana Walker (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) was found to be highly abundant and widely distributed in South Africa. Tetramesa romana is already a biological control agent in North America and thus is likely exerting some pressure on A. donax populations in South Africa. For both Phragmites spp. a total of ten herbivores were found, although having higher species richness compared to A. donax, when compared to other regions, these native species have a relatively low species richness. Providing baseline data on plant origin, genetic diversity and herbivory on A. donax, P. australis and P. mauritianus has provided important information on managing these species in riparian ecosystems in South Africa. For the Phragmites spp. with no evidence of any cryptic invasions, it is recommended that reed stands continue to be managed as native species. Phragmites spp. are important dominant vegetative species and thus should be protected; however, if reed stands become expansive, control methods can be put in place to focus on managing spread and abundance. Producing journalism about climate change for news and agricultural radio: a case study of Malawi's public broadcaster

- Description: This study investigates how radio journalists at the Malawian public broadcaster (MBC) experience the task of producing content that can help their audiences to engage with the local relevance of climate change. This study establishes terms of reference for this research by mapping out international histories of public engagement with the concept of climate change in the domains of science, politics and the media. It describes how contestations around climate change have evolved within these spheres and concludes that such contestation is shaped by relations of power that inform the international economic domain. The study then examines scholarly evaluations of journalism about climate change, concluding that such evaluation is grounded in distinct normative understandings of the social purpose of such journalism. It is argued that research about Malawian journalists’ experience of reporting on climate change should draw on knowledge of the role that norms play within this local environment. With this goal in mind, the study reviews tools for the analysis of the normative foundations of journalism within specific socio-historic contexts. It demonstrates the relevance of these tools for the identification of norms and their influence on journalism about climate change in the Malawian context. The empirical component of the study draws on this framework by means of a case study of the experiences of journalists working at the MBC. It examines how these journalists experience the task of producing content that enables their audiences to engage with the local relevance of climate change. It compares such experience as articulated by journalists working for agricultural and news programming. It is concluded that the participants have access to credible knowledge about climate change and its relevance to the Malawian context. Based on such knowledge, they articulate a shared understanding of climate change and its relevance to the Malawian context. However, the study identifies differences in the way that the two groups make sense of the practice of producing journalism about climate change that is of relevance to their audience. In particular, the agricultural journalists incorporate a more inclusive and diverse set of norms into their conceptualisation of such practice. At the same time, the two groups nevertheless respond similarly when commenting on institutional factors at MBC that constrain or enable them to produce journalism about climate change that is guided by such norms. They place emphasis on the need for MBC to provide opportunities for journalists to have access to training, facilitated by organisations that have expertise in climate change journalism. It is concluded that the participants recognise that, despite the entrenched culture of authoritarianism at MBC, such workshops can contribute fundamentally to the shaping of journalistic practice within this broadcaster.

The aniline-substituted BODIPY derivative was further coordinated with gold nanorods and the characterization was achieved by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).In addition to this dye, quaternized BODIPY dyes were also synthesized and investigated for their potential utility as photosentitizers in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT).BODIPY dyes with pyrene substituted styryl groups were embedded in polymer thin film using poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBC) to study their optical limiting properties. The optical limiting values of these BODIPY dyes once embedded in thin films were found to be greatly improved and the limiting intensityof each film was well below the maximum threshold which is set to be 0.95 J.cm-². The physicochemical properties and NLO parameters of all of the synthesized dyes were investigated.

- Description: Jacklyn Cock’s Maids and Madams is a study on domestic work in the Eastern Cape which places a focus on black domestic workers who work in white families. Cock’s study was ground-breaking research within labour development in South Africa (with regards to domestic service). The apartheid system regarded domestic work as that of social reproduction: domestic workers left their families to replenish and reproduce the labour power of white families, whose members were employed in a formal workplace. The contribution to this system, according to Cock (1989), was unbreakable because they did not earn enough money to disrupt the system. The respondents of this thesis are undocumented migrant Basotho domestic workers. These domestic workers have much in common with Cock’s respondents. For one, they leave their homes and families to replenish the labour power of black middle class families, whose members are employed in a formal workplace. The difference between this thesis and Cock’s study is that the respondents’ employers are members of the black middle class. Furthermore, the employees are undocumented Basotho domestic workers. Undocumented, migrant, Basotho domestic workers are in a similarly vulnerable position to that of Cock’s respondents. This dissertation engages with the extent to which Maids and Madams is still relevant to the living and working conditions of a new vulnerable workforce in the domestic sector: undocumented, female, Basotho domestic workers employed in black, middle-class households in Gauteng. The dissertation also finds that the relationship between the black migrant domestic worker and the black middle class employer is influenced cultural aspects of what domestic chores represent in black families, and the element of respect from employers (particularly to elderly domestic workers) or lack thereof. This dissertation underlines that the term “ousi” makes the Basotho domestic workers a collective, and not individuals. Thus the term “ousi” can be viewed as the term that takes away the identity of the domestic worker. The theoretical framework of the research is labour process theory (LPT). The new wave of labour process theorists are much more focused on the service industry. LPT is significant to this research because its focus is on the subjective experiences of the workers. This is the core purpose of the thesis. The focus of the new wave LPT involves a shift from understanding workers at a macro level to understanding the subjective experiences of the workers (in the service industry) at a micro level. This provides an appropriate framework to study the subjective working and living experiences of undocumented, migrant, Basotho domestic workers. The research design is based on qualitative research. The research made use of in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The selection of respondents was done through purposive sampling. They findings of this research highlighted the central themes in the relevant literature. However, the key findings of this research also reveal tensions and contradictions that are not explored in detail in the existing literature. For example, the relationship between the black middle class employer and the black domestic worker has tensions which originate from a cultural context. The respondents of this dissertation and their employers are of the same race, yet are of a different class.

The tectonic evolution of the Cape Fold Belt: constraints from fluid inclusion characteristics in syntectonic quartz veins

- Description: Syn-tectonic quartz veins formed along faults, folds and tension gashes in rocks of the Cape Supergroup (CSG) of the central Cape Fold Belt (CFB) comprise mainly hydrous saline fluids. These veins may also contain CO₂ Syn-tectonic quartz veins formed along faults, folds and tension gashes in rocks of the Cape Supergroup CO₂ , or CH4 and CO₂, or neither CO₂ nor CH4. The majority of inclusions are two-phase and fluid rich, and the most common fluid composition is H2O-NaCl. The final melting temperature, and therefore salinity, differs very little across different structures (fluids in all structures show maximum salinities between 2.5 and 6 wt% NaCl equivalent). Thrusts, reverse faults, strike- and oblique-slip faults, and folds all have similar homogenization temperatures (Th). Primary H2O-NaCl inclusions show Th between ~130 and 200 °C, and H2O-NaCl-CO₂ inclusions have slightly higher Th, between ~140 and 240 °C. Secondary inclusions in all structures have a similar Th range to primary inclusions, but have a lower maximum Th (~130-180 °C). Inclusions containing CH4 have the highest Th (~210 - 300 °C). Microthermobarometry indicates that fluids associated with contractional structures, such as thrust faults or folds, from the Ordovician lower Table Mountain Group (TMG) show lower greenschist facies trapping conditions (~170-175 MPa and ~240-300 °C). These veins also show a plastic deformation overprint (recrystallization of quartz and foam textures), at temperatures higher than the trapping conditions (~ ≥300 °C), indicating that temperatures increased subsequent to hydraulic fracturing, quartz precipitation and thrust slip. These structures formed on a prograde path, at approximately 335 Ma, at a time when the overlying CSG rock column was approximately 6800 m thick. This event pre-dated the thermal peak of the Cape Orogeny at ~276-261 Ma by ~60 million years. Further up in the stratigraphy of the CFB, in the Devonian upper Bokkeveld Group, fluid inclusions in quartz veins associated with a thrust fault show similar trapping pressure (~200 MPa) to the structures in the lower CFB. At 335 Ma, the stratigraphic overburden on this sample locality would not have been sufficiently thick to exert the calculated pressure. This fault may have formed at a later time. The observed pressure of ~200 MPa may have been created either by the higher Bokkeveld Group, the entire Witteberg Group, and further CSG rocks that were eroded prior to the deposition of the Permo-Triassic Karoo Supergroup, or by tectonic thickening of the CSG by prograde thrusting. Still further up in the CSG, fluids from a fold sample from the Witteberg Group record quartz precipitation at lower greenschist facies conditions and subsequent plastic deformation during folding. The formation of this fold postdates the thrusting in the lower TMG, and may correlate in time with deformation during the thermal peak in Middle Permian time (~276-261 Ma).

What are the barriers and prospects for integrating environmental sustainability into the curriculum?

- Description: This study attempts to investigate the extent to which environmental sustainability has been integrated into the curriculum of the Humanities Faculty at Rhodes University as well as the barriers and prospects for further integration. This thesis argues that the integration of environmental sustainability has been very limited. The three main components of environmental sustainability, namely environmental content, interdisciplinarity and participatory curriculum formation, are all lacking in most departments' curricula. This is despite all departments' affirmation that environmental issues are among the most critical problems the world faces today. Most of the departments are arguably only paying lip-service to environmental issues while making little to no effort toward integrating the environment into their curriculum. A lack of space in the curriculum is a frequently suggested barrier to introducing environmental sustainability into a course. However, this thesis argues that the environmentally conscious transformation of a curriculum cannot be achieved simply by adding content to the existing syllabus, but requires a restructuring of the curriculum itself. Many of the other barriers found by this study can be overcome through sufficient will on the part of departments to change their curricula. However, generating this will is difficult, as students are not ostensibly interested in environmental concerns. It is then incumbent on the lecturers themselves to educate the students on critical environmental issues, as well as on students to urge their lecturers to bring about change.
