- Description: Effective strategy execution is very important for the achievement of an organisation’s goals. Because it is a difficult task to translate a strategy into action, itis imperative for leadership to prioritize its strategic plan to ensure its success. The purpose of this study is to identify barriers and enablers of strategy execution in Basic Education in the Eastern Cape; its focus is on strategic goal number six: “Efficient administration ensured through good corporate governance and management”. The effectiveness of the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) is measured by its service delivery, how strategy is executed in providing quality education. These are guided by the norms and standards like the National Education Policy Act: Norms and Standards for educators, as set by the National Department of Basic Education and the Treasury Acts. The motivation for the study was the Department’s poor performance as reported by the Auditor General (AG) in his 2015 audit report, that there has been a lack of good governance and accountability in the ECDoE. The study is qualitative: a sample of twenty-five (25) ECDoE senior managers were interviewed as the custodians of the execution of the strategic plan. Purposive sampling method selected the twenty-five from a total of forty-five (45) senior managers, some of whom were in Head Office and some in the twenty-three (23) districts. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews and responses were captured on Excel Spreadsheet, and analysed with the Thematic Analysis. Major findings relating to barriers were on Human Resource Management, Poor Leadership, Resourcing (Tools of Trade), Improper Budgeting Systems, Poor Communication, and Organisational Structure. Some variables were interchangeably identified both as barriers and enablers, such as budgeting and resourcing. There were many recommendations, but for this study one, the Finance Section, will suffice: and that is that the Finance Section should analyse each directorate’s spending for each year before the new budget is allocated.

Analysis of the data indicate that the use of African block notation, as a rhythmic medium was well within reach of the participating children, such that at the end of each 16 session intervention programme, learners at both research sites demonstrated their capacity to: • Focus their attention on one activity while a different activity was taking place alongside them. • Watch, listen and only then act. • Practise their numbers through play: to count out and to write up to 16 and beyond. • Notate, read and interpret rhythmic patterns through block notation and instrumentation. The findings suggest the intervention programme could be continued over a longer period for maximum benefit, possibly through following Grade R learners through to Grade 1. The findings further suggest that fun with rhythmic, number-based patterning can assist learners’ development of executive function and self-regulated learning skills.

Religion is one of the key ways through which migrants are able to access social networks and social capital. Islam, the dominant practised religion in the market, thus forms a foundation for strong, emotionally supportive, caring relationships between Somali transmigrants and South Africans The relationships between South African traders and Somali transmigrants are mutually constitutive, as they lean on one another for stability during a time that is unstable for both groups. The closeness of their relationships is evident through the way in which they tease and joke with one another, and the many ways in which they offer intangible support to each other. This thesis illustrates that despite the dominant xenophobic narrative, a close social kinship is formed in the Roelof Street market between South Africans and Somali transmigrants.

- Description: The focus of this paper is an exploration of curating and its various forms as understood in a South African art context. In order to understand this context I examine definitions of South African publics as well as different curatorial models. I raise questions around art and accessibility as well as the functions of language as a gate keeper within the visual arts. Through a practical exploration of curatorial methods of engagement, I assess the curator's role as disseminator of information. My final project Conversations at Morija that was held in Morija, Lesotho faces the challenge of curating within a space that has a strong creative platform, but lacks a visual art audience. The exhibition was held during the 2013 Morija Art and Culture festival which is dominated by its music component. Despite Morija being the country's creative centre and sole museum, there is little support for its programme both monetary and in terms of attendance. Through a series of conversations several issues pertaining to Morija, Lesotho and the diaspora were addressed. I look at the absence of creative platforms and alternative curatorial methods that engage the public in a participatory manner. Briefly exploring questions of migrant labour and definitions of what constitutes a diaspora. I look at relatable ways to engage the local audience whilst maintaining a creative core in which to spark dialogue around pertinent matters relating to the country.

- Description: Traditional network segmentation allows discrete trust levels to be defined for different network segments, using physical firewalls or routers that control north-south traffic flowing between different interfaces. This technique reduces the attack surface area should an attacker breach one of the perimeter defences. However, east-west traffic flowing between endpoints within the same network segment does not pass through a firewall, and an attacker may be able to move laterally between endpoints within that segment. Network micro-segmentation was designed to address the challenge of controlling east-west traffic, and various solutions have been released with differing levels of capabilities and feature sets. These approaches range from simple network switch Access Control List based segmentation to complex hypervisor based software-defined security segments defined down to the individual workload, container or process level, and enforced via policy based security controls for each segment. Several commercial solutions for network micro-segmentation exist, but these are primarily focused on physical and cloud data centres, and are often accompanied by significant capital outlay and resource requirements. Given these constraints, this research determines whether existing tools provided with operating systems can be re-purposed to implement micro-segmentation and restrict east-west traffic within one or more network segments for a small-to-medium sized corporate network. To this end, a proof-of-concept lab environment was built with a heterogeneous mix of Windows and Linux virtual servers and workstations deployed in an Active Directory domain. The use of Group Policy Objects to deploy IPsec Server and Domain Isolation for controlling traffic between endpoints is examined, in conjunction with IPsec Authenticated Header and Encapsulating Security Payload modes as an additional layer of security. The outcome of the research shows that revisiting existing tools can enable organisations to implement an additional, cost-effective secure layer of defence in their network.

- Description: Community Engagement (CE) in South Africa is an increasingly important feature of the relationship between the university and a broader community, and may aid in bridging the entrenched social divisions of this nation. This will only be possible if CE succeeds in uniting the knowledge production interests of the university and the broader community. Through CE, knowledge production and dissemination from within the university should be made more relevant and applicable because it is based on a relationship or engagement with a community. Based on the perceptions of student volunteers in a CE programme at a South African university, this thesis set out to ask whether or not students are transformed through university-community collaboration. This research examines the perceptions and motivations of student volunteers entering community partnership programmes. More importantly, it asks whether these engagements are merely a “weekend special” consisting of shallow engagements, which last only a few hours a week that provide institutional window dressing; or well-intended engagements through which students build meaningful relationships and experience learning opportunities that prepare them for real world civic participation. As this thesis focuses on the student perspective, it explores whether or not CE has an impact, both personally and educationally or academically, on the lives of individual student volunteers. The literature on CE argues that students’ participation in CE opportunities should enhance academic learning, personal growth and promote a sense of citizenship or civic responsibility. Based on the perceptions of a small group of student volunteers at one university, this thesis identifies possible successes and limitations of CE volunteering programmes in order to see if what is promoted in the literature or institutional policies is being experienced or achieved in practice at universities. I argue that students are indeed transformed through processes of CE, often in unexpected ways, and despite many difficulties. Therefore, if CE provides students with more holistic learning opportunities while attending universities for academic ends, it is important to look at in what ways this is achieved.

Isolation, identification and genetic characterisation of a microsporidium isolated from the carob moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

- Description: Carob moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is an economically important pest, yet its biology and pest status on citrus in South Africa was, until recently, poorly understood. A study was initiated to determine the cause of collapse of a laboratory carob moth colony that was established to investigate the biology of carob moth on citrus and to develop integrated management strategies for the pest. An organism was isolated from deceased larvae and was morphologically identified as a microsporidium, based on transmission electron microscopy. Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites that have been found to infect almost all eukaryotes. Several Nosema species have been isolated from economically important insect pests, yet little genetic information is available from online databases for identification. Mature spores were recovered and measured using transmission electron microscopy. Spores were ovocylindrical with a wrinkled exospore, and had a length of 2.8 ± 0.02 pm and a width of 1.6 ± 0.04 pm. The identity of the microsporidium was confirmed by PCR amplification, sequencing and analysis of the regions encoding the ribosomal RNA. BLAST analysis of the different rRNA regions amplified showed that the microsporidium shared a 96 - 99 % identity with Nosema sp. M-Pr, Nosema carpocapsae, Nosema oulemae, Nosema sp. CO1, Microsporidium 57864, and Nosema bombi. Phylogenetic analysis of the SSU and LSU rRNA genes showed that the microsporidium clustered with the Nosema / Vairimorpha clade, supported by a bootstrap value of 100. The organisation of the RNA cistron was determined by PCR amplification using the primer set 18f and L1328r to be 5’-SSU-ITS-LSU-IGS-5S-3’, which confirms the placement of the microsporidium within the Nosema / Vairimorpha clade. Because the BLAST results showed a close relationship with Nosema carpocapsae, a microsporidium infecting codling moth, the pathogenicity of the microsporidium was tested against codling moth by inoculating artificial diet with a high spore concentration of 1.1 x 107 spores/ml and a low spore concentration of 1.1 x 104 spores/ml. DNA was extracted from deceased larvae inoculated with the high concentration, and PCR of the SSU rRNA gene and bacterial 16S region was performed. Mortality in the high concentration experiment was significant (p = 0.05), but the cause of infection was determined to be a bacterium, through sequencing and BLAST analysis of the bacterial 16S rDNA. The bacterium shared a 99 % identity with Bacillus cereus. Percentage mortality (p = 0.09), larval mass (p = 0.09) and instar (p = 0.24) did not differ significantly between treatments in the low concentration experiment. - Description: Carob moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is an economically important pest, yet its biology and pest status on citrus in South Africa was, until recently, poorly understood. A study was initiated to determine the cause of collapse of a laboratory carob moth colony that was established to investigate the biology of carob moth on citrus and to develop integrated management strategies for the pest. An organism was isolated from deceased larvae and was morphologically identified as a microsporidium, based on transmission electron microscopy. Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites that have been found to infect almost all eukaryotes. Several Nosema species have been isolated from economically important insect pests, yet little genetic information is available from online databases for identification. Mature spores were recovered and measured using transmission electron microscopy. Spores were ovocylindrical with a wrinkled exospore, and had a length of 2.8 ± 0.02 pm and a width of 1.6 ± 0.04 pm. The identity of the microsporidium was confirmed by PCR amplification, sequencing and analysis of the regions encoding the ribosomal RNA. BLAST analysis of the different rRNA regions amplified showed that the microsporidium shared a 96 - 99 % identity with Nosema sp. M-Pr, Nosema carpocapsae, Nosema oulemae, Nosema sp. CO1, Microsporidium 57864, and Nosema bombi. Phylogenetic analysis of the SSU and LSU rRNA genes showed that the microsporidium clustered with the Nosema / Vairimorpha clade, supported by a bootstrap value of 100. The organisation of the RNA cistron was determined by PCR amplification using the primer set 18f and L1328r to be 5’-SSU-ITS-LSU-IGS-5S-3’, which confirms the placement of the microsporidium within the Nosema / Vairimorpha clade. In this work, three alkyne substituted phthalocyanines were used. Two novel phthalocyanines, with nickel and cobalt metal centres, were studied alongside a manganese phthalocyanine reported in literature. Each of the three phthalocyanines was modified at the peripheral position with a 1-hexyne group, via a glycosidic bond, yielding the terminal alkyne groups that were used for subsequent click reactions. In situ diazotisation was used to graft 4-azidoaniline groups to the surface of the glassy carbon electrode. The azide bearing 4- azidoaniline groups were thus used to anchor the tetra substituted phthalocyanines to the surface of the electrodes. This method yielded successful modification of the electrodes and lead to their application in sensing studies. The modified electrodes were primarily used to catalyse the common agricultural oxidising agent hydrazine.

Devices such as firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems are prevalent today and employ extensive Deep Packet Inspection to scrutinise each piece of network traffic. Systems such as these usually require specialised hardware to meet the demand imposed by high throughput networks. Hardware like this is extremely expensive and singular in its function. It is with this in mind that the string search algorithms are introduced. These algorithms have been proven to perform well when searching through large volumes of text and may be able to perform equally well in the context of Deep Packet Inspection. String search algorithms are designed to match a single pattern to a substring of a given piece of text. This is not unlike the heuristics employed by traditional Deep Packet Inspection systems. This research compares the performance of a large number of string search algorithms during packet processing. Deep Packet Inspection places stringent restrictions on the reliability and speed of the algorithms due to increased performance pressures. A test system had to be designed in order to properly test the string search algorithms in the context of Deep Packet Inspection. The system allowed for precise and repeatable tests of each algorithm and then for their comparison. Of the algorithms tested, the Horspool and Quick Search algorithms posted the best results for both speed and reliability. The Not So Naive and Rabin-Karp algorithms were slowest overall.

- Description: The Gamsberg deposit is a 200 Mt zinc reserve belonging to the world class base metalrich Aggeneys-Gamsberg mining district. A rifting environment permitted the development of four proximal SEDEX-type deposits whereby Gamsberg is localized in the eastern side of the district and characterised by a peculiar enrichment in manganese. This study investigates the geochemistry of sphalerite in the Gams Formation holding the economic units of the deposit. Microscopic petrography revealed that most of primary textures have been overprinted by recrystallization, alteration, replacement and deformational textures produced during the polyphase metamorphism of the Namaquan Orogeny. Therefore, EPMA analysis provided the bulk of information to define the geochemical distribution of sphalerite. A lateral variation was noticed throughout the Gams Formation, whereby the North orebody presents Zn-rich and Fe+Mn-poor sphalerite while the West and East orebodies contain Zn-poor and Fe-Mn-rich sphalerite. This feature has been interpreted as the association of a chemocline and a variation in the basin topography defining deep Mn+Fe-rich zones and shallow Mn+Fe-poor zones in the primitive basin. It is suggested that mineralized hot brines mixed with seawater developed the chemocline. The uneven topography shaped the geochemical variation between the actual orebodies.

Collegial clusters are communities of teachers who aim at improving their practice by working on their own professional development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the selected Grade 9 teachers’ experiences of a Geoboard intervention programme. It also wanted to investigate the role that a Geoboard can play in the teaching and learning of area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes. The research was a case-study within the interpretive paradigm. A variety of data collection techniques was used. These included baseline assessment tasks, observations during the intervention programme, post intervention assessment tasks and semistructured interviews with the participating teachers and a few learners from each participating school. The collected data was analysed using both the quantitative and qualitative methods. My research findings reveal that a Geoboard, as a manipulative, developed confidence in the participating teachers. In the interviews with teachers, it transpired that teachers’ skills in teaching area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes had been sharpened. According to the interviews with learners, the use of a Geoboard led to better conceptual understanding of the area and perimeter, as learners no longer had to rely on formulae. Kilpatrick et al. (2001) refer to conceptual understanding as an integrated functional grasp of mathematical ideas. The post intervention assessment task showed a positive shift in learners’ performance. The average learner performance improved from 29% in the baseline assessment task to 61% in the post intervention assessment task. This shows that the use of a Geoboard led to meaningful learning of area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes. The overall research findings reveal that the use of manipulatives has a positive impact in the teaching and learning of area and perimeter. Learners’ responses to the interview questions showed that there was better understanding of the two concepts, which enabled them to construct their own knowledge. They further said the Geoboard allowed them to be hands-on, which contributed to their active involvement in the lesson.

- Description: An increasingly large body of literature sees disconnection from nature as central to the convergent social-ecological crisis, rooted in anthropocentric ontologies. This study explored the potential for embodied, sociomaterial nature-based activities to engender shifts in children’s perceptions of, and sense of connectedness with, nature. Equally it explored how children’s socio-cultural-historical value positionings (SCHVP) mediated their perceptions of, and connectedness with, nature. The nature-based activities, spread over five-day camps, were located at Hobbiton-on-Hogsback, a centre that has existed for decades to provide experiential learning and graded exposure to natural spaces, aiming to increase environmental knowledge and nature-connection. The experiences of two groups of children from wide-ranging socioeconomic and socio-cultural backgrounds in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa were explored using interpretive case study methodology. Through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with selected children (aged 10-14) and the Hobbiton staff members who worked with them, as well as participant observation, data were collected and analysed thematically. This study was guided by a layered theoretical framework that included Deep Ecology as an under-labourer, and Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as a substantive, analytical framework. Interactions between participants’ SCHVP and the sociomateriality of the nature- based activities were analysed in relation to the children’s nature-perceptions and sense of Connectedness-With-Nature. The findings highlight both the importance of the children’s SCHVP and the sociomateriality of the nature-based activities in mediating their prior perceptions of, and connectedness with nature. The nature-based activities acted as a primary stimulus for developing environmental empathy, awareness and pro-environmental intentions. In essence, Hobbiton acted as a primary ‘seed planter’ towards greater feelings of Connectedness-With-Nature. However, recommendations are put forward for more decolonised, ethics-oriented and sociomaterial design of Hobbiton’s nature-based activities, with an emphasis on integrating children’s SCHVP into the pedagogical-design process in relation to the sociomaterial elements of the nature-based activities. Emically integrating the children’s multiplicities of knowing, doing, valuing and being into the pedagogical-design process could contribute to the decolonisation of nature-based experiences in such contexts cultural, socio and political diversity.

- Description: An increasingly large body of literature sees disconnection from nature as central to the convergent social-ecological crisis, rooted in anthropocentric ontologies. This study explored the potential for embodied, sociomaterial nature-based activities to engender shifts in children’s perceptions of, and sense of connectedness with, nature. Equally it explored how children’s socio-cultural-historical value positionings (SCHVP) mediated their perceptions of, and connectedness with, nature. The nature-based activities, spread over five-day camps, were located at Hobbiton-on-Hogsback, a centre that has existed for decades to provide experiential learning and graded exposure to natural spaces, aiming to increase environmental knowledge and nature-connection. The experiences of two groups of children from wide-ranging socioeconomic and socio-cultural backgrounds in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa were explored using interpretive case study methodology. Through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with selected children (aged 10-14) and the Hobbiton staff members who worked with them, as well as participant observation, data were collected and analysed thematically. - Description: The world is becoming more complex due to the increasing occurrence of social-ecological change. This is particularly evident in the developing world, especially on the African continent, where existing vulnerabilities (i.e. endemic poverty, weak governance, overpopulation and HIV/AIDS) are being exacerbated by the impact of climate change. Climate change poses a very real threat to millions of Africans, especially those who rely on the natural world for their livelihoods. The increasing variability of climate and rainfall patterns are said to have dire consequences on agricultural production which is the main livelihood activity of rural dwellers across the continent. The impacts of such change and variability include, changes in the frequency and intensity of droughts, flooding and heavy storms, leading to worsening soil conditions, desertification as well as disease and pest out-breaks which will likely result in reduced crop and livestock yields. A reduction in agricultural production will likely have a negative effect on the food security of millions of people. This study was conducted in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, in two rural villages, Fairbairn and Ntloko located in the former Ciskei homeland, with the purpose of exploring the nexus between climate change, cultivation and food security. This study combined social-ecological thinking with that of political ecology to create a robust lens, in which to analyse the complex interactions between humans and the environment. A mixed methods approach was used to gather the data which consisted of a household survey, using a structured questionnaire as well as semi-structured interviews with various respondents. Quantitative data were analysed using Excel and Statistica 13, whilst coding was used for qualitative data. The main aim of the study was to explore the extent and characteristics of cultivation in the two study sites, the role of household food production in food security as well as the challenges that local cultivator’s face with regards to climate change. In recent decades, there has been a decline in rural agricultural production with many fields that were previously cultivated, lying vacant and unused. However, as this study found, cultivation is still important as over 50% of sampled households cultivated a small area within the homestead. This was mainly done to supplement household food expenditure in order to save cash incomes. The results also found that although participants had perceived negative changes in climate and rainfall (amount, onset, duration), it was not considered the most important challenge for own production. Rather, lack of fencing and capital were seen as major hindrances to efficient own production. Understanding the complexity of own production and food security under a changing climate can help form better and more resilient policies and strategies for rural development, in addition to strengthening future livelihoods of rural people in an ever changing world.

- Description: Gold in the highly prospective Twangiza-Namoya Gold Belt (TNGB) in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with its four main deposits at Twangiza, Kamituga, Lugushwa and Namoya, appears to be correlated with the presence of sulphide minerals. Sulphur isotopic compositions of pyrite in the metasedimentary host rocks and in hydrothermal veins are used to identify the possible primary sources of hydrothermal sulphur and, by proxy, hydrothermal gold. The sulphur isotope signatures of the pyrites from the TNGB deposits show an overall range from -18.4%o to +22.6%o. S34 values in host rock pyrite are: -2.2%o to +3.0%o (Twangiza deposit), -4.2%o to -0.6% (Kamituga deposit), -18.4% to -12.7% (Lugushwa deposit), and +12.4% to +22.6% (Namoya deposit). The sulphur isotopic signature of vein pyrite is -5.2% to +3.0% (Twangiza deposit), -9.1% to -7.4% (Kamituga deposit), -0.3% to +3.2% (Lugushwa deposit) and +1.3% to +20.4% (Namoya deposit). The isotopic data indicate a primary sedimentary to evaporitic source of sulphur in the host rock pyrite. Pyrite from metadiorites shows magmatic S isotope compositions. Native gold was found in both sedimentary host rock and vein samples. This indicates that native gold was present in the primary metasedimentary sequence of the TNGB. Some vein pyrites in the TNGB have isotopic signatures that are similar to that of the host rock pyrite. These veins have formed from fluids extracted from the hosting metasedimentary sequence. Conversely, other vein pyrite shows different S34S values compared to the host rock pyrite, suggesting a fluid source that is different from the sedimentary source. Possibly, particularly in the Lugushwa deposit, an igneous source may have released sulphur and possibly gold bearing fluids in addition to those extracted from the sedimentary sequences in the TNGB. However, there is abundant evidence for sulphur and gold mobilised in the sedimentary host rocks and precipitated in the hydrothermal system of the TNGB.

Research has shown that support groups have always been a way for people to cope with the distress and stressful circumstances associated with health conditions such as HIV. This research investigated the role of face to face support groups in the lives of those living with HIV. The primary focus of this research project is to provide an in-depth exploration of HIV positive individuals‟ experiences of being in a support group. The study aims to explore the positive and negative experiences of being in an HIV support group and aims to gain an understanding of the role support plays in the lives of those living with HIV. A qualitative research design was used to explore the above mentioned aim. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five individuals, (three women and two men) who had experienced HIV support groups. The interviews were transcribed and then analysed according to the principles of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The findings of this study revealed five super-ordinate themes, which revealed not only the positive and negative experiences of being in a support group, but also the challenges that the participants‟ experienced before joining the group. Getting a sense of the participants‟ experience before joining the group allowed the researcher to get a better understanding of how useful or not the support group has been in helping them deal with the challenges of living with HIV. The themes included: „struggling to survive after diagnosis‟, „struggling to cope: adopting negative coping skills‟, „experiencing a turning-point: a will to survive‟, „attending support group: a sweet experience‟ and lastly, „attending support groups: a bitter experience‟. Findings suggest that for these participants, the advantages outweighed the disadvantages of being in a support group. Therefore this study suggests that face to face support groups are a viable and even necessary option for support. These findings support previous research and literature in regards to the importance of social support in the form of support groups in effectively assisting HIV positive people in their journey to adjust to the consequence of living with HIV.
