Umzi ka Mama Family property transfer practices and the historical significance of title deeds to African female heads of household in Fingo Village: a participatory theatre approach

- Description: Many everyday stories and experiences of African women remain underrepresented and undocumented. For example, the omission of Fingo Village women’s names from official deeds records silenced their voices. African women faced gender and racial discrimination that denied them fundamental human rights and limited their participation in urban life. Title deed records constitute one type of public record where African women’s names were omitted for centuries by the colonial and apartheid governments. Under apartheid, African women occupied the social status of minors; hence, the government denied them urban land rights. This African feminist study enlists narratives of a sample of seven African female heads of households residing in Fingo Village who are also property owners. Fingo Village is an atypical environment where African people had a rare legal advantage of owning title deeds dating back to 1855. This study employed an interdisciplinary approach by mixing oral history methodology and applied theatre methods to record, interpret and present Fingo Village women’s narratives of family property inheritance and the significance of title deed documentation in the suburb. The multiple technique approach created opportunities for authentic dialogue between the researcher and the participants beyond the inherent limitations of public history oral interviews. The traditional oral history interview and the participatory theatre methods helped uncover unconventional practices in family property relations. Though customary transfers of family homes to custodians were prevalent, title deed registration of family property was also acknowledged as a vital practice that empowered women legally. The researcher used participatory theatre techniques inspired by playback, image and forum theatre to enhance the researcher and participants’ relationship. These methods encouraged the researcher and respondents’ shared authority as they embarked on an extended participatory research project. In this regard, through dialogical and performance-based activities, the participants and the researcher became co-creators of untold Fingo Village stories. Moreover, the theatre techniques became interpretation and analysis tools that ensured that the participants’ untold stories were well represented. The first phase of the research involved engaging with the literature about the title deeds history of Fingo Village and conducting oral history interviews that served as data. In the second phase, the interviews were analysed and packaged in a documentary format. The third phase was a playback theatre inspired session in a 10-minute performance based on themes from the participants’ filmed interviews. Additionally, the performance was a catalyst for forum theatre activities that allowed the participants to interact with the performer and suggest solutions to the dilemma posed by the performer regarding family property use. The participants were decision-makers and family property relations experts within this imagined context. In the fourth phase, the image theatre adaptation and memory work activities were essential tools. The tools aided the visuals and information from an existing Fingo Village exhibition as additional resources that prompted dialogue and discussions. The exhibition encouraged participants to share their personal experiences and memories of the Group Areas Act (GAA) era. The findings showed that the GAA era saw many families revert to communal tenure practices as a strategy to evade forced sales; as such, this gave rise to undocumented family property transfers. Additionally, the findings revealed that though customary practices are often patriarchal, there are circumstances favouring women as the preferred family property custodian. These are embedded in the social status of women who are traditional healers, firstborn daughters, and those from families with just daughters. This study contributes to the growing literature that advocates for positive representation of African women’s stories by using active research methodologies that strengthen partnerships and shared authority between the researcher and the public. This methodology could inspire other researchers to explore theatre techniques to create more profound and meaningful engagements with their participants. Land degradation and livelihood strategies in rural Zimbabwe: the case of two A1 farms in Shurugwi District

- Description: Land degradation is a global phenomenon which is having serious negative consequences for rural livelihoods, which depend quite fundamentally on land and its resources. At the same time, one of the key conditions contributing to land degradation relates to rural livelihood practices, insofar as these practices fail to protect the land. Hence, there sometimes exists a mutually-reinforcing process of decline, in relation to both land vitality and livelihoods vitality over time. This thesis seeks to investigate and understand this complex land-livelihoods process through a case study of two fast track farms in the Shurugwi District of contemporary Zimbabwe. In the year 2000, the Zimbabwean government introduced the fast track land reform programme which fundamentally reconfigured the rural landscape. In particular, it led to the formation of A1 farms (containing small-scale farming units called A1 plots), onto which people were resettled for purposes of enhancing their livelihoods. The case study focuses on two A1 farms in the district, namely, Selukwe Peak and Adare farms. Through a longitudinal study of land and livelihoods on these A1 farms, this study seeks to identify the multi-faceted character of land degradation on the farms, the multi-layered conditions (or causes) facilitating land degradation (specifically, the farm-based livelihood practices) and the effects of this land degradation on these very livelihood practices. This includes a focus on farmers’ understandings of land degradation and how these understandings may or may not condition livelihood practices on the two farms. Of particular importance is the presence of not only agricultural practices, but also high levels of illegal and legal mining on the farms and in the surrounding areas. In pursuing this study, the thesis draws upon the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach alongside Margaret Archer’s morphogenetic sociological perspective. Combined, they provide an intricate understanding of the relevance of both structure and agency to the analysis. A qualitative methodology was used, and this involved a questionnaire survey, in- depth interviews, life histories, focus group discussions and transect walks. The study concludes that the livelihood strategies undertaken by the villagers of Selukwe Peak and Adare farms are key causes of land degradation, as are the land-degrading activities of illegal and legal miners. The A1 villagers are aware that their activities are causing land degradation but they continue these activities because they are pushed by circumstances beyond their control. - Description: Freshwater fishes are in global decline and fish as a group are the most imperilled of all vertebrates. Freshwater systems are among the most threatened globally, largely owing to their comparatively high species and habitat diversity while occupying a minute fraction of the Earth’s surface. In South Africa, invasion by non-native fishes has had a devastating effect on freshwater systems across the country. Numerous other stressors and anthropogenic impacts continue to impact these systems, including habitat degradation, water abstraction and global change effects. In general, South African freshwater systems are under-studied and there is a lack of baseline biological and ecological studies on many freshwater fish species. The Cape Fold Ecoregion (CFE) of South Africa is a particularly vulnerable region, with many range-restricted species and highly fragmented native fish ranges following high invasion rates. Within the CFE, the Olifants-Doring River System (ODRS) is of primary concern owing to the high endemism and imperilled status of its freshwater fish species. The Rondegat River in the ODRS is of notable conservation value, as it hosts populations of important endemic CFE species. This river is unique, being the site of the first alien fish eradication programme of its kind in South Africa. Thus the Rondegat River, and in particular its imperilled cyprinid assemblage, is used here as a case study of the responses and community dynamics of recovering freshwater fish species. The members of this cyprinid assemblage are Sedercypris calidus, Pseudobarbus phlegethon and Labeobarbus seeberi. Sedercypris calidus and L. seeberi are listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as “Near-Threatened”, while P. phlegethon is listed as “Endangered”. Understanding the dynamics and responses to understudied vulnerable fish communities in the wake of restoration efforts was the overarching goal of this thesis. The first chapter served as a review of current knowledge of the CFE, the Rondegat River, the myriad stressors that have impacted on or are projected to affect this region, and the freshwater fish species on which those stressors act. My first investigations served as an extension of the existing Rondegat River monitoring programme, making use of remote underwater video (RUV) data to assess relative abundance and habitat associations of the focal species (Chapter 2). A relatively limited spatial range of P. phlegethon was established, which was suggested to be a result of relatively highly specialised habitat requirements and sensitivity to disturbance. Sedercypris calidus was confirmed as a relatively more abundant and ubiquitous species across the length of the Rondegat River, sharing much of the lower and middle reaches with L. seeberi. I sought to use experimental trials of functional response, as a proxy for feeding performance, across representative temperatures and relevant prey types, in the spatially overlapping S. calidus and L. seeberi (Chapter 3). Labeobarbus seeberi generally outcompeted S. calidus across temperature treatments and prey types. The ecomorphology and diet of all three species were used to construct trophic profiles, which suggested that there was a high degree of feeding capacity overlap between L. seeberi and S. calidus, while P. phlegethon diverged from the other two species (Chapter 4). Gut content suggested that all three species overlapped broadly in diet. This indicated that the realised trophic niche of these species is similar, despite some morphological specialisation. I then used RUV data to investigate in-situ feeding behaviours, with the aim to disentangle the nuances of community dynamics and mechanisms of coexistence in the cyprinid assemblage (Chapter 5). I found that, despite the higher feeding performance of L. seeberi (Chapter 3) and its overlaps in diet and feeding capacity with S. calidus (Chapter 4), S. calidus is able to mitigate competitive pressures through foraging mode switching and exploitation of allochthonous food inputs. Evidence for further habitat and prey selectivity in Pseudobarbus phlegethon was gathered based on dependence on complex habitats and pool refugia for the majority of its feeding, supporting this species as a headwater specialist; alongside signals of its spatial and habitat use patterns (Chapter 2). While S. calidus and L. seeberi were found to be less habitat-specific than P. phlegethon, caution was noted in the potential for ongoing stressors, such as habitat destruction, loss of river connectivity and global change effects, to impact on the reproductive success of these two species. Stressors affecting the habitats and sensitive invertebrate taxa upon which all three species depend continue to threaten the Rondegat system, highlighting the need to maintain ecosystem integrity through conservation interventions. - Description: This study contributes to the literature on quality improvement in higher education by examining the structural, cultural and agential constraints and enablements on a quality process at a university in South Africa. It examined four cases and developed an understanding of the complex interaction of structure, culture and agency and the mechanisms that enable or constrain quality improvement in higher education. The study drew on the literature on higher education quality for the theoretical basis for what is known contributes to the way in which quality assurance and improvement is implemented and its impact on the higher education context. Critical Realism provided the ontological framework and conceptual tools to understand and explore the complex social world within which the quality process took place. The literature on the morphogenetic approach provided the analytical framework for the data analysis and findings. The data consisted of a set of documents from a quality process that took place over a five-year period. The data analysis revealed that different departmental contexts impact on how mechanisms are activated. Each school context shapes the way in which people engage with the review process and consequently, processes and procedures are mediated in each context. This research therefore adds to the understanding of the way in which quality processes take place at a micro-level within an institutional context and informs the approach to quality improvement more broadly, nationally and internationally. - Description: This study contributes to the literature on quality improvement in higher education by examining the structural, cultural and agential constraints and enablements on a quality process at a university in South Africa. It examined four cases and developed an understanding of the complex interaction of structure, culture and agency and the mechanisms that enable or constrain quality improvement in higher education. The study drew on the literature on higher education quality for the theoretical basis for what is known contributes to the way in which quality assurance and improvement is implemented and its impact on the higher education context. Critical Realism provided the ontological framework and conceptual tools to understand and explore the complex social world within which the quality process took place. The literature on the morphogenetic approach provided the analytical framework for the data analysis and findings. The data consisted of a set of documents from a quality process that took place over a five-year period. The data analysis revealed that different departmental contexts impact on how mechanisms are activated. Each school context shapes the way in which people engage with the review process and consequently, processes and procedures are mediated in each context. This research therefore adds to the understanding of the way in which quality processes take place at a micro-level within an institutional context and informs the approach to quality improvement more broadly, nationally and internationally. This project utilises the borderlands theory to understand the experiences of doctoral students as they undergo the process of becoming and intellectual identity formation. Whilst ‘journey’ and other metaphors that have been used to understand doctoral student experiences capture the process of becoming as a progression through the liminal stages – proposal, literature review, context, writing, reading etc. These stages presuppose temporality of being leading to stasis/completion. I argue that such conceptualisation of doctoral studies, although useful, depict one side of the story and provide a limited, monolithic, and homogenising understanding of the spatial configurations of doctoral space and intellectual identity formation. The dominant discourses of doctoral conceived and perceived space, liminal stages and understanding of doctoral student experiences, mask the more latent and intimate liminal stages of intellectual identity formation. Drawing from borderlands theory, I firstly argue for a holistic approach to understanding the spatiality of doctorate studies. Secondly, I argue that liminality is an everyday process integral to human existence where one is always in a state of ideological transition. An important state of liminality is the awareness of ‘Self’ in perpetual motion, caught between two worlds dominated/dominator and two ideologies of oppression/resistance. If this side of liminality is not made visible, institutional spaces, such as the doctorate, privileged with the power to disseminate and position onto-epistemologies as universal can be used to reproduce and reinforce exclusionary onto-epistemologies that subsequently impact intellectual identity formation. Modification and application of the decentralised wastewater treatment technology for greywater treatment to reduce water needs

- Description: Water is a scarce resource that is being acknowledged as a limiting factor to further social- economic growth and development. Demand for freshwater is increasing with corresponding increases in human population, industrial and agricultural activities. Alternative sources, such as greywater and rainwater are often polluted. Though greywater can be used for non-potable purposes, such as irrigation, it still requires some measures of treatment to improve its quality. To improve on greywater quality to facilitate its reuse, decentralised wastewater treatment technologies carry a great potential as complementary and alternative means of wastewater management particularly in peri-urban areas. Five research goals are addressed in this thesis: (i) to monitor the performance of Fly Ash Lime Filter Tower (FLFT) in the treatment of greywater; (ii) to modify the Fly Ash Lime Filter Tower in the treatment of greywater in order to reduce the pH of the greywater, and improved on the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and coliform counts; (iii) to investigate the potential of the reuse of greywater for irrigation; (iv) to undertake a techno analysis of the FLFT system for commercial use; and (v) to evaluate the use of hydrogen-sulphide (H2S) test kit to monitor faecal contamination of various water sources using a multidisciplinary approach. The modification of the FLFT indicated good treatment efficiency, reducing the concentrations of COD, chlorides, nitrates, ammonia and sulphate by 82.6%, 60.4%, 72.9%, 60.5%, and 53.9%, respectively; while the average pH was at 8.3. Greywater contains nutrients that are beneficial to the growth of most plants. Growth variables included biomass, stem height, number of leaves and number of vegetables harvested. Soil analysis showed no effects of the treated greywater on soil physico-chemical and microbial quality with bulk density 2.0g/cm3, average pH 7.4, total phosphorus 0.16mg/L 8, faecal coliform 0.3 CFU/100 ml. The tomatoes had high biomass and dry weight (150 g; 33g) than beetroot (35 g; 15 g). Crops irrigated with greywater significantly grew faster compared with those irrigated with tap water. The community approach highlighted the value of knowledge management in greywater reuse. It highlighted the importance of creating an institutional knowledge in water management using the H2S kit. The techno-economic analysis was used to evaluate key factors and the activities that are relevant to develop a sustainable FLFT in order to gain insights into the possibility of developing, and incorporating a business model framework to support decision making in value creation and value capturing during the research and the scaling up of the system. While deemed beneficial and of considerable value, e-Government deployments and implementations in the water sector of local governments of South Africa have not always been successful. One important reason for e-Government failures, among several others, is the lack of coherent strategies, informed by key representing stakeholder views, to guide implementation and deployment of e-Government tools. Without strategies, it is highly likely that ICT integration will be conducted haphazardly. As a point of note, more than the deliverable (strategy document) that represents the output of the strategy development process, it serves more purpose to understand the process that results in the strategy. Importantly, understanding the process helps to account for the formed relationships between the various stakeholders that need to buy into the strategy. The research study develops an e-Government strategy formulation framework based on a systems thinking approach, intended to support the strategy formulation process of e-Government strategies – to underpin the effective integration, deployment and sustained use of ICT solutions for water service delivery at the local government level. A systems thinking approach is considered due to its emphasis on the strategy being informed by a holistic assessment. Where there is some knowledge about the processes by which a strategy is formulated – over time ideas may be derived on the types of processes that may produce efficient e-Government strategies. The research is conducted using the Design Science research paradigm. The Design Science paradigm is comprised of two processes – build and evaluate (Hevner et al., 2004). The build process, as related to this research concentrates on the progression through which the theoretical e-Government strategy formulation framework is derived. Weick’s (1989) theorizing approach is ascribed, supporting the design of the theoretical framework. In applying Weick’s theorizing approach, firstly, the lack of knowledge on how e-Government strategies should be formulated in South African local municipalities – is explicated in an intelligible manner. Once the problem is properly articulated, a trial and error selection process is undertaken of existing approaches on strategy formulation – thought to possess the potential to contribute to the development of an e-Government strategy formulation framework, suited to local governments in South Africa. With good reason, 10 (ten) strategy approaches are selected from, e-Government programmes in developed countries, Non-Governmental organizational strategy approaches, and business related strategy formulation approaches. Lastly, as all possible approaches that may contribute to the framework development process cannot be selected, criteria is specified to limit the number of possible selections. Furthermore, in deriving the framework, foundations for systematically dealing with unstructured problems, such as, strategy formulation are consulted. This foundation along with the research goals, informs the development of a template used to comparatively analyse the 10 selected approaches on strategy formulation. This analysis aids in revealing the components of an e-Government strategy formulation process. With the developed framework, the evaluation process of the design science research commences, seeking to determine the utility of the framework (suitability and shortcomings). The framework is applied to the procedural formulation of a strategy for a tentative e-Government project called MobiSAM, which aims to enhance citizen engagement with local government through the use of mobile phones. The strategy formulation application process in the project environment and local government reveals lessons that inform revisions to the framework. Integrating music and mathematics for connecting across multiple constructs of fractional understanding: an RME task design journey

- Description: Two South African curricular aims: appreciating creativity in mathematics and developing conceptual understanding, motivated this study. Negative views towards mathematics and challenges in teaching and learning fractions at primary school level are reported in literature, with the part-whole construct of fractions often the sole teaching focus. Despite challenges in curriculum integration (high demands on teachers and diluting disciplines), benefits, such as motivation and creative thinking, are noted. I recognised music-mathematics integration as an opportune context for designing tasks to support learners in moving flexibly between the fraction as ratio, fraction as measure and part-whole constructs. Guided by Realistic Mathematics Education principles, I embarked on a participatory dual-design experiment in task design, grappling within three micro-Communities of Practice (micro-CoPs) and across two planes: the Design-Theorising Plane and the Grounded-Practice Plane. In the Design-Theorising Plane, I worked with my two doctoral supervisors, grappling with design obstacles and finding resolutions. COVID-19 restrictions shifted our meetings to online platforms, allowing documentation and analysis of the task design process through recording functions. In the Grounded-Practice Plane, I worked within two separate micro-CoPs, both at independent schools (eight and two participating teachers respectively). Data on the teachers’ interrogation and implementation of the designed tasks were obtained via formal and informal interviews. Their reflections informed ongoing adaptations to the task design. Data were analysed in a matrix I designed and via NVivo coding. Findings include both the product of the task design journey (eight music-mathematics lessons, resources, and representations) and the process (ten groupings of Obstacle-Resolution Cycles). Three key questions (relating to music-mathematics fidelity; to task simplification for implementation; and to appropriate music-mathematics representation) were used in addressing each Obstacle-Resolution Cycle. Designing tasks to teach the part-whole construct of fractions was relatively straightforward, but designing tasks to teach the fraction as ratio and fraction as measure constructs was more challenging. These constructs could not be conflated by superimposing the music and mathematical linear representations. Aligning them, however, allowed for moving flexibly between the constructs. Interaction of catechol O-methyltransferase with gold and silver nanoparticles

The physiological role of this enzyme is the methylation and thereby inactivation of the catechol-containing bio-active and bio-toxic compounds, including catechol-neurotransmitters, catechol-estrogens and catechol-containing drugs. Activity of this enzyme is implicated in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and is associated with other diseases including breast cancer and an array neuropsychological disorders, such as schizophrenia. This thesis explores the use of gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) (AuNPs and AgNPs) to inhibit the catalytic activity of mammalian COMT. Because of its accessibility and availability, we initially investigated bovine soluble COMT (BSCOMT) from liver tissue. Bioinformatic analyses and structural modeling revealed high (>90%) sequence similarity between BSCOMT and human soluble COMT (HSCOMT). BSCOMT was partially purified to 7.78 fold, 1.65% yield and had a specific activity of 0.052 U/mg. It had pH and temperature optima of 8.5 and 40oC, respectively. The Km, Vmax, Kcat and Kcat/Km towards esculetin methylation were respectively 1.475±0.130 pM, 0.0353±0.001 pmol/ml/min, 1.748 x 10-2±5.0x10-4 min-1 and 1.18x10-2 M-1. min-1. HSCOMT was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) which showed optimal activity for esculetin methylation at pH and temperature of 7.0 and 30°C, respectively. It was purified to 5.62 fold, 22.6% yield with a specific activity of 3.85 U/mg. HSCOMT kinetic plots, upon incubation of the reaction mixture at 30°C for 5 min before addition of SAM was hyperbolic with Km, Vmax, Kcat and Kcat/Km values of 1.79 pM, 0.412 pmol/ml/min, 2.08 min-1 and 1.165 M-1. min-1, respectively. AuNPs and AgNPs showed a concentration dependent inhibition of HSCOMT activity upon increasing the 5 min incubation time to 1 h. Interestingly, HSCOMT kinetics, with 1 h incubation at 30°C, showed a sigmoidal curve, as well as increased activity. Incubation of the reaction mixture in the presence of 60 pM AuNPs and/or AgNPs for 1 hreversed the observed sigmoidal to a hyperbolic curve, with kinetic parameters comparable to those of 5 min incubation. SDS-PAGE analyses of HSCOMT after the kinetic experiments showed the enzyme incubated for 5 min as a monomer, while that which was incubated for 1 h migrated substantially as dimer. However, the HSCOMT incubated for 1 h in the presence of 60 pM AuNPs and/or AgNPs migrated as a monomer. This indicated that the extension of the incubation period allowed the dimerization of HSCOMT, which exhibited sigmoidal kinetics and higher activity. The presence of NPs impeded the HSCOMT dimerization which decreased the activity. Varying the concentration of SAM suggested that SAM had an allosteric modulatory effect on HSCOMT. Absorption spectroscopy indicated adsorption of HSCOMT on the gold and silver NP surfaces and the formation of NPs-HSCOMT corona. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the interaction of HSCOMT with both gold and silver NPs was governed by a static quenching mechanism, implying the formation of a non-fluorescent fluorophore-NP complex at the ground state. Further fluorometric analyses indicated that both gold and silver NPs had contact with Trp143; that the interactions were spontaneous and were driven by electrostatic interactions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies showed the adsorption of HSCOMT of the NPs surfaces to cause relaxation of the enzyme’s B-sheet structures. Molecular docking studies indicated involvement of largely hydrophilic amino acids, with the interacting distances of less than 3.5A. Mentoring as social learning value creation in two South African environmental organisations: a social realist analysis

Environmental education research that addresses these challenges is critical to ensuring that future generations thrive in a warming climate. South Africa needs environmental leaders; we therefore need to understand and explore the possibilities of mentoring young professionals in environmental organisations in South Africa. Several initiatives have been developed to contribute to the mentoring of young professionals in South African environmental organisations. This study drew on a critical realist ontology, social realist meta-theory and domain specific theory on mentoring and evaluation to explore mentoring as a value creating proposition in two environmental organisations in South Africa that were part of the national Groen Sebenza youth employment creation programme which had a strong focus on mentoring. To strengthen conceptual analytical tools on mentoring, I undertook an immanent critique of domain specific mentoring theory to develop a more appropriate foundation for mentoring theory in the environmental sector that was not subject to the historical influence of human capital theory only (which has tended to dominate the field’s literature). I then developed in-depth understanding of mentoring in two case study contexts, namely a non-profit environmental organisation and an environmental consulting company, using qualitative research approaches that included contextual profiling, case study research and mirror data workshops. Analytically, I considered the case data drawing on the value creation evaluation framework of Wenger-Trayner and Wenger-Trayner (2014) which itself was developing as an analytical framework as the study developed. I strengthened the analytical framework with social realist interpretations drawing on Archer (1995). This offered me a way of developing an in-depth understanding of the factors which constrain or enable the value creation possibilities of mentoring, with a view to inform human capacity development initiatives that support mentoring in the environment sector. It was possible to explain the value creation possibilities of mentoring within two case study environmental organisations through considering mentoring as a social learning process of value creation and this overcame some of the shortfalls identified in other early learning theories as well as theories of mentoring. The research revealed how mentoring can provide a value creation social learning trajectory for unemployed youth. A social realist perspective explained how young professionals expanded their primary agency, through full participation in workplace communities of practice, to find their identity as corporate agents in the workplace with their mentors. In this research, Social Realist ontology, theory and methodology was able to achieve what Human Capital Theory could not and provided an account of the interplay of structure, culture and agency over time, through emergent properties and the separation of structure and agency. Thus, it was possible to avoid conflation and the limitation of theory of the present tense, with a deeper, ontologically robust explanation of mentoring as social learning and social change and a social realist orientation to human capacity development. South Africa has a history of oppression, inequality and injustice and requires social processes that are reflexive, critical, emancipatory and transformative. Therefore, this research required theory and approaches that could explain mentoring of unemployed youth, as a common good initiative for a more just and sustainable society. As shown in this study, a Social Realist approach can uncover the underlying generative mechanisms and make the implicit more explicit in research, policy and strategy, offering a robust alternative to the tenets of Human Capital Theory that have driven much mentoring research in South Africa and elsewhere to date. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, Education, 2022

The research is foregrounded by the continuing poor performance of South African learners in mathematics at all levels of education in the country, which has been linked to the inadequate knowledge and skills of mathematics teachers. Pre-service teacher education is putting considerable effort into improving the preparation of mathematics teachers and developing their ability to reflect on their teaching practice is one of the strategies being employed for this purpose. Research has demonstrated the importance of reflective practice (RP) in both developing and extending teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching. This study therefore contributes to current research that supports the development of RP as a professional skill for promoting the acquisition of knowledge for teaching in pre-service teacher education. The study adopted a qualitative case study approach with two phases of data collection. In Phase 1 I collected and analysed three sets of 19 pre-service teachers’ written reflections to establish the nature of the reflections that they developed when analysing video-recorded mathematics lessons of experienced teachers’ practice. Phase 2 was conducted with four PSTs who reflected on video-recorded mathematics lessons of their own practice, and similarly sought to investigate the nature of the reflections they developed when reflecting on practice. The four PSTs wrote one set of reflections on their own lessons, went through three sessions of facilitator-guided reflections, then wrote another set of reflections to establish if the support provided in small group facilitator-guided sessions improved their reflections. Iterative content analysis was employed to analyse the PSTs’ written reflections, using an analytic tool that I developed for this purpose through merging Lee’s (2007) and Muir and Beswick’s (2007) levels of reflection frameworks. My model had four levels of reflection: description, explanation, suggestion and reflectivity. The names of each of the levels connect to the key indicator for that level. PSTs’ written reflections were coded and analysed according to these levels. The study found that PSTs’ initial reflections were mostly description of general classroom events with little reflection at the levels of explanation and suggestion, and an absence of reflectivity. Most reflections focused on general events in the lesson rather than mathematical events, even though the six lens framework they were given to guide their reflections prompted them to steer their attention towards mathematical events. The second and third sets of reflections, although mostly still at level 1, showed some shifts towards explanation and suggestion, although an increased focus on mathematical events though reflectivity was still largely absent. - Description: The identification of discrete self-sustaining productive units in marine populations is essential for achieving sustainable fisheries objectives. Marine fish populations frequently exhibit dynamic characteristics across their life-histories, displaying variability in spatial structure and mixing patterns, both within and among populations. The incoherent application of management boundaries on biological populations can bias stock assessment results and have important implications on sustainable fisheries management. Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) is a long-lived, slow-growing, late-maturing, deep-sea, benthopelagic species. It forms the basis of important and highly lucrative industrial and artisanal fisheries across its distribution. Patagonian toothfish have complex life-histories characterised by high dispersal potential during the egg and larval phase, a wide depth range because of their ontogenetic migratory behaviour, and large adult size that is capable of undertaking long-distance active movements (>200 km). These characteristics provide opportunities for high levels of connectivity, and as such, the stock structure is not well understood. We applied an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to provide an improved understanding of the complex stock structure dynamics for Patagonian toothfish on the Patagonian Shelf, specifically in relation to the shelf, slope, and deep-sea plains around the Falkland Islands. Research results were focused on aspects pertaining to (1) geographic variation in phenotypic characters (otolith shape); (2) a description of the spatial-temporal distribution patterns; (3) the active movements of deep-sea adults (tag-recapture study); and (4) the identification of early life-history dispersal through otolith microstructure and microchemical chronologies. Results from the study indicate high regional connectivity during the early life-history stages derived from at least two spawning contingents into spatially discrete nursery areas (cohort groups) on the Falklands Shelf. Fish followed distinct ontogenetic pathways into deeper waters adjacent to the areas wherein juvenile settlement into a demersal habitat occurred. There is little to no evidence of mixing among cohort groups during their ontogenetic migration into deep-sea adult habitats, reflecting a mixed population based on oceanographically defined egg and larval dispersal. The majority of the adult component of the population continue to display high site fidelity. However, between 9 and 25% of the population, consisting predominantly of larger reproductively capable adults undertake long-distance dispersal behaviour, identified as home-range relocations from the adult deep-sea habitats towards three of the known southern spawning grounds in the region. Results are suggestive of a requirement for improved collaborative efforts for regionally-based management approaches with careful consideration of local stock contingents. Future monitoring and research priorities should focus on the identification of reproductive potential, dispersal pathways and settlement patterns of stock contingents to inform the dynamics of mixed stock origins across the Patagonian region. While many aspects regarding the stock structure remain unresolved, results derived from the current studies can be used to inform the development of management measures to ensure the continued recovery and sustainable management of Patagonian toothfish within the region. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, 2022

- Description: The identification of discrete self-sustaining productive units in marine populations is essential for achieving sustainable fisheries objectives. Marine fish populations frequently exhibit dynamic characteristics across their life-histories, displaying variability in spatial structure and mixing patterns, both within and among populations. The incoherent application of management boundaries on biological populations can bias stock assessment results and have important implications on sustainable fisheries management. Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) is a long-lived, slow-growing, late-maturing, deep-sea, benthopelagic species. It forms the basis of important and highly lucrative industrial and artisanal fisheries across its distribution. Patagonian toothfish have complex life-histories characterised by high dispersal potential during the egg and larval phase, a wide depth range because of their ontogenetic migratory behaviour, and large adult size that is capable of undertaking long-distance active movements (>200 km). These characteristics provide opportunities for high levels of connectivity, and as such, the stock structure is not well understood. We applied an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to provide an improved understanding of the complex stock structure dynamics for Patagonian toothfish on the Patagonian Shelf, specifically in relation to the shelf, slope, and deep-sea plains around the Falkland Islands. Research results were focused on aspects pertaining to (1) geographic variation in phenotypic characters (otolith shape); (2) a description of the spatial-temporal distribution patterns; (3) the active movements of deep-sea adults (tag-recapture study); and (4) the identification of early life-history dispersal through otolith microstructure and microchemical chronologies. Results from the study indicate high regional connectivity during the early life-history stages derived from at least two spawning contingents into spatially discrete nursery areas (cohort groups) on the Falklands Shelf. Fish followed distinct ontogenetic pathways into deeper waters adjacent to the areas wherein juvenile settlement into a demersal habitat occurred. There is little to no evidence of mixing among cohort groups during their ontogenetic migration into deep-sea adult habitats, reflecting a mixed population based on oceanographically defined egg and larval dispersal. The majority of the adult component of the population continue to display high site fidelity. However, between 9 and 25% of the population, consisting predominantly of larger reproductively capable adults undertake long-distance dispersal behaviour, identified as home-range relocations from the adult deep-sea habitats towards three of the known southern spawning grounds in the region. Results are suggestive of a requirement for improved collaborative efforts for regionally-based management approaches with careful consideration of local stock contingents. Future monitoring and research priorities should focus on the identification of reproductive potential, dispersal pathways and settlement patterns of stock contingents to inform the dynamics of mixed stock origins across the Patagonian region. The study initially aimed to synthesize an analogue of a natural anthraquinone, 1,3,6-trihydroxy-7-((S)-1- hydroxyethyl)anthracene-9,10-dione 5 using Friedel-Crafts acylation of phthalic anhydride and a benzene derivative. Synthetic transformation of anacardic acid 63, obtained as a by- product of the cashew industry successfully afforded 4-ethoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione 89. However, when attempted to couple 4-ethoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione 89 with 2- hydroxyacetophenone 91 in a Friedel-Crafts acylation manner to form 2-acetyl-1,8- dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione 87 the reaction did not work efficiently. A simple derivative of benzene which is; benzene-1,4-diol 102 was reacted instead with 3-ethoxyphthalic acid 71 and isobenzofuran-1,3-dione 96 to form 1,4,5-trihydroxy anthraquinone 72 and 1,4- dihydroxyanthraquinone 42, respectively. A modified Marschalk reaction was then used to introduce the hydroxyl alkyl group to 1,4-dihydroxy anthraquinone 42, which allowed further elaboration of the hydroxyl-substituent in moderate to good yields (22-80%). A molecular docking study was performed using Schrödinger software to predict the binding affinity of the test compounds to the target protein trypanothione reductase (PDB ID: 6BU7). An in-vitro screening of 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone derivatives and some selected precursors for antitrypanosomal, antiplasmodial, antibacterial, and cytotoxicity activities produced encouraging results. Derivatives of anacardic acid and cardanol from CNSL were found to have moderate activity against trypanosomes with no activity against Plasmodium falciparum. Almost 63% of synthesized 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone derivatives displayed activity against trypanosomes. The in-vitro evaluation and the in silico molecular docking studies revealed that 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone derivatives can be potential drug-like candidates active against T.brucei parasites (IC50 = 0.70-1.20 μM). Only four 1,4- iv dihydroxyanthraquinone derivatives with thiosemicarbazone, chloride, pyrrole, and diethanolamine functionality displayed activity against Plasmodium falciparum (IC50 = 3.17- 14.36 μM). In-vitro evaluated of test compounds against antibacterial screen and cytotoxicity effects significantly showed that 2-hydroxy-6-pentadecylbenzoic acid 63a and 2-((2- chlorophenyl)(piperazin-1-yl) methyl)-1,4-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione 78 have potency against Staphylococcus aureus and reduced the viability of the cells below 20% at an initial concentration of 50 μg/mL. Only 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone derivatives with thiosemicarbazone 76, piperazine 78, and diethanolamine 80 motifs were active against HeLa cells and reduced the viability of cells below 20% at a concentration of 50 μg/mL. In conclusion, this current reported study has generated useful knowlege on the applicability of the agro-waste CNSL as an agent active against trypanosomiasis but also as a low-cost starting material to synthesize hydroxy anthraquinones. - Description: Wetlands are recognised as having the potential to contribute long-term benefits to society; wetland rehabilitation is undertaken to recover these benefits in response to widespread wetland degradation. Increasingly, there have been calls to value the benefits of wetland rehabilitation to justify further investment. Such is the case in South Africa. Furthermore, recent global agendas and targets for ecosystem restoration, such as the declaration of the Decade of Restoration 2021-2030, suggest increasing pressure on governments to implement rehabilitation and imply a concomitant increase in decision-making regarding where and how to rehabilitate. In response to these information needs, this thesis explores the economic valuation of wetland rehabilitation through a narrative review of the foundational theory of values and valuation, a quantitative review of applied wetland rehabilitation economic valuation studies, and the evaluation of five wetland rehabilitation projects from South Africa. Projects were selected as case studies to represent various rehabilitation goals and explore different contexts (urban-rural; beneficiary groups), the timing of the evaluation (ex ante, ex post) and value types and valuation methods. The final chapter of the thesis integrates the case study experiences with the findings of the theoretical research components to propose a framework for the valuation of wetland rehabilitation, which can be applied in South Africa, and more generally, to further demonstrate the values of wetland rehabilitation, and as a tool to guide wetland rehabilitation decision-making. While initially grounded in mainstream economics, the research led into a number of fields including philosophy, social-ecological systems and social-ecological relations thinking, several environmental science areas and livelihood and human well-being frameworks. A deeper look into economic theory and history revealed an evolution of thinking on the meaning of ‘value’ and view of ‘nature’ and numerous critiques of standard neoclassical economics. From the insights gained and the case study experiences, this thesis argues that the neoclassical economic perspective, especially combined with a monetary metric, is too restrictive, and arguably too abstract in its assumptions of human behaviour and reliance on mathematical models, as an overarching framework for the valuation of wetland rehabilition. This is not to suggest that standard economic valuation concepts and methods cannot be useful, as the research case studies illustrated, but rather that wetland valuation must be approached from a value pluralism perspective. Behaviour and trophic ecology of oceanic triggerfish (Canthidermis maculata) and rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata) associated with floating objects in the open ocean

- Description: The oceanic triggerfish (Canthidermis maculata) and rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata) are epipelagic species that commonly associate with floating objects throughout the world’s tropical oceans. Besides tunas, these two species often form the bulk of the aggregation and are major non-target species (bycatch) incidentally captured at fish aggregation devices (FADs) by tropical tuna purse seiners. Despite being abundant, little is known about their basic biology, ecology and associative behavior with floating objects. This thesis aims to address knowledge gaps in their associative behavior and ecology at floating objects and attempts to explore potential bycatch mitigation methods. Acoustic telemetry was used to characterise several aspects of the two species’ behavior at floating objects. Fish were captured and tagged at drifting FADs in the core of the western Indian Ocean tuna fishing grounds. Prolonged remote observations were obtained through satellite linked receivers which provided fine-scale data on the behavior of oceanic triggerfish (n= 46 919 cumulated observation days) and rainbow runner (n= 24 538 cumulated observation days). The two species remained associated with the same floating object for periods extending up to several months. The mean residence time estimated using a survival analysis was 65 days for oceanic triggerfish and 94 days for rainbow runner. A distinct diel pattern in association was observed; the two species were closely associated to the FAD during the night and increased their home range during the day while performing short excursions (oceanic triggerfish mean: 2.0 hours ±1.6 SD; rainbow runner mean: 2.4 hours ±2.2 SD) away from the FAD. Similarly, distinct patterns in the vertical movements and locomotory activity (measured using accelerometer tags) were observed as the two species increased their vertical movements and activity levels during the day. Generally, their vertical movements were largely restricted to the mixed layer (< 60 m). At night, the two species remained close to the surface (0-5 m) where they appear to be in a resting state. An interesting behavioural switch in activity levels and vertical distribution was observed for oceanic triggerfish which coincided with a change in the environment as the FAD drifted close to a cold-core cyclonic eddy. Ambient light appears to be the key stimulus triggering the observed diel behavioural patterns. species-specific vulnerability for target species, skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and non-target species, including silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), oceanic triggerfish, and rainbow runner, to the purse seine fishing gear were investigated. Hourly presence rates at FADs over 24 hours were examined to assess whether the capture rate of non-target species could be reduced at specific times during the day. Silky sharks displayed a similar associative pattern to that of targeted tunas. Moreover, the vulnerability of both target and non-target species were close to the maximum during the period of behavioural transitions at sunrise when the majority of the fishing sets are made. As such, a change in set time in the western Indian Ocean does not appear to be a feasible method to reduce capture rates of non-target species. Stomach content and stable isotope analysis were conducted on oceanic triggerfish (stomach n = 152, isotope n = 65) and rainbow runner (stomach n = 156, isotope n = 71) incidentally captured individuals at FADs by purse seiners. Typical FAD-associated prey items represented a minor component of their diet as they predominantly foraged on zooplankton and micronekton in the water column, suggesting that oceanic triggerfish and rainbow runner do not associate to floating objects for direct trophic advantages. Overlap in their dietary and isotopic niches indicates an intermediate level of competition. Stomach content and stable isotope analysis were conducted on oceanic triggerfish (stomach n = 152, isotope n = 65) and rainbow runner (stomach n = 156, isotope n = 71) incidentally captured individuals at FADs by purse seiners. Typical FAD-associated prey items represented a minor component of their diet as they predominantly foraged on zooplankton and micronekton in the water column, suggesting that oceanic triggerfish and rainbow runner do not associate to floating objects for direct trophic advantages. Overlap in their dietary and isotopic niches indicates an intermediate level of competition. Overall, the spatial and trophic ecology of both species are remarkably similar and prolonged associations with FADs indicates that floating objects play a significant ecological role in the pelagic environment for the two species. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, 2016

- Description: Freshwater crayfish have become one of the most widely introduced freshwater taxa globally. Crayfish introductions have not spared the African continent, which, apart from Madagascar, is naturally devoid of native freshwater crayfish. These introductions are of concern because invasive crayfish have generally been shown to cause strong impacts on recipient ecosystems outside Africa. This study therefore set out to compile up-to-date information regarding crayfish introductions in Africa, their pathways and distributions and to improve our understanding of the nature and magnitude of their environmental impacts. A systematic review revealed that nine crayfish species have been introduced into the continent with five of those, Astacus astacus, Cherax quadricarinatus, Faxonius limosus, Procambarus clarkii and Procambarus virginalis, having established naturalised populations in fourteen African countries (Chapter 2). The main driver of these crayfish introductions was to provide socio-economic benefits but there is limited evidence of success. The thesis further documents attempts made to address crayfish knowledge gaps in Africa, including standardisation of C. quadricarinatus sampling gear (Chapter 3), determination of the distribution of C. quadricarinatus in the recently invaded Upper Zambezi Basin (Chapter 4), and predicting ecological and socioeconomic impacts of two crayfish species that are spreading rapidly in Southern Africa, namely, C. quadricarinatus and P. clarkii (Chapters 5 – 8). To standardise C. quadricarinatus sampling methods in Africa, two methods used in Southern Africa were compared and the Promar® collapsible trap baited with dry pellets was recommended as the best approach for C. quadricarinatus abundance studies due to the high catch per unit effort (CPUE), probability of capture and the suitability of dry dog food as a standard bait. This standard approach was used for crayfish surveys in the Zambezi Basin to comprehensively determine the spread and establishment of C. quadricarinatus across the basin. The establishment of C. quadricarinatus in the Barotse Floodplain, Upper Zambezi Floodplains freshwater ecoregion was confirmed. Although the probability of capture and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of C. quadricarinatus in the Barotse floodplain were similar to that of older invasions in the basin (Lake Kariba and Kafue River), morphometric differences among C. quadricarinatus populations sampled from these invaded regions were detected. Although crayfish were not detected in other regions, for example, the Okavango Floodplains ecoregions, C. quadricarinatus have the potential to spread at a downstream and upstream rate of 49 and 12 km·year-1, impacting native biota therein. To evaluate the potential for ecological impacts, the consumer-resource dynamics of C. quadricarinatus and P. clarkii were described in comparison to a native trophic analogue, the freshwater crab of the Potamonautes genus, preying on various native taxa ubiquitous to African aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The use of functional response (FR) and consumption experiments in this study showed the potential impacts of the two crayfish species on native resources and on resources that support livelihoods in invaded ecosystems. This in most cases was a result of their high attack parameter, which also resulted in high functional responses ratios (FRRs) compared to native crabs. The crayfish FR, FRRs and consumption rates were mostly enhanced under the high temperature treatments. The FRs and consumption results were then combined with the field biomasses of crayfish and crabs to calculate the relative impact potential (RIP) to successfully predict the degree of impact caused by crayfish species relative to crabs. Crayfish species consistently displayed RIP scores > 1 relative to the native crab irrespective of region, which were higher for the summer than the winter season, suggesting greater impact of the invaders compared to the native species. This study further estimated the socioeconomic losses due to catch spoilage by C. quadricarinatus which are up to 1500 t per year in the invaded Kafue River Basin, which translates to an annual income loss of US$ 2 million. Information provided in this study is vital for conservation management and to compel policymakers to develop appropriate conservation management tools within regulatory frameworks, which could stop or minimise the spread of crayfish species and protect Africa from further losing aquatic biodiversity. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, 2021
