Maintaining the façade: the disconnect between policy and practice in heritage resources management in Makhanda, South Africa

- Description: Cultural heritage is globally acknowledged as having the potential to contribute to positive economic, environmental, political, and social impacts (Graham, 2002). In the South African context, cultural heritage management is rooted in colonial and apartheid narratives that mark a large part of the country's history. Post-apartheid transformation processes have driven new approaches to managing heritage to represent the shared collective narrative of a democratic South Africa. This transformation includes the formation of the three-tiered South African heritage management system by the National Heritage Resources Agency (NHRA) in 1999 and a rethinking of what heritage constitutes and whose heritage matters. Despite the extensive cultural heritage resources in the country, literature concerning the management of these assets in the context of the urban environment and urban planning and management is limited (Donaldson, 2001; Donaldson et al., 2013; Buchanan & Donaldson, 2021; Kruger & Donaldson, 2021). This research explores the built environment heritage resources in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape province. Makhanda possesses a rich and varied cultural heritage landscape, including over 70 Provincial Heritage Resources in the form of built environment heritage. The case study provides a perfect laboratory for investigating the various threats and opportunities in the local context that severely affect heritage management. The research used a mixed-method approach to generate data. Primary data were collected through a field survey of built environment heritage resources, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. Secondary data sources comprised government policy documents, by-laws, reports, research papers and newspaper articles. In the localised context, findings illustrated several challenges affecting local heritage management, centring mainly on the balance between heritage resource management and overall urban management. Findings identified challenges included a poor acknowledgement of the nuances in local history, questions on the effectiveness of legislation, governance and management issues, conflicting demands for social services and urban development, and building maintenance. Heritage resources are acknowledged as a potential tool to meet the local community's needs, and opportunities for developing the heritage sector were also identified. These suggestions include information sharing and cooperation between the municipality, community and various role players, community education, tourism product development, institutional development through skills development, the incorporation of intangible heritage, and the acknowledgement of more inclusive forms of cultural heritage. Overall, the findings indicate that the disconnection in heritage management, urban management practices, and municipal dysfunction in Makhanda threatens the built environment heritage and the local sense of place. Remote sensing as a monitoring solution for water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes) in the context of the biological control programme at Hartbeespoort Dam

Despite notable success with biological control of other invasive macrophytes, the plant remains as a problematic weed in many aquatic systems in South Africa, particularly due to the eutrophic status of many of its water systems, as well as the plant’s tolerance to cooler climatic conditions than most of its existing biological control agents. Hartbeespoort Dam, located about 30 kilometres west of Pretoria, South Africa, has been infamously infested with water hyacinth for decades, which impacts the important socioeconomic utility of the dam and functioning of natural ecological processes in the system. The dam has a long history of efforts to control water hyacinth, which include widespread herbicidal spray, mechanical removal and classical biological control programmes since the early 1990s - mostly with limited or short-lived success. However, after the introduction of a new, cold-tolerant biological control agent, Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) in 2018 with an inundative release strategy, the water hyacinth dropped significantly from a maximum cover of about 45 percent (819 hectares) down to less than two percent (40 hectares) over a three-month period (November 2019 – January 2020). This was significant, as it marked the first successful biological control of water hyacinth in a eutrophic, temperate system in South Africa. However, due to the scale of Hartbeespoort Dam (1820 hectares) and the high spatiotemporal variation of the floating mats across time and space, quantifying and monitoring these rapid changes has proved difficult. In response to this problem, this thesis proposed a remote sensing solution to address the need for accurate, timely and readily accessible monitoring data of the water hyacinth population on the dam. Leveraging the temporally frequent (< 5 days revisit time) Sentinel-2 multispectral satellite data, as well as the powerful cloud-computing resources of Google Earth Engine, this thesis developed and deployed a relatively simple and robust index-based decision tree classification method to demonstrate the value of these technologies as an effective monitoring and analysis tool for monitoring large macrophyte infestations. To this end, several challenges had to be overcome in order to produce easily accessible data that was accurate and reliable. For example, due to the size of the Sentinel-2 Level-1C image dataset from August 2015 to March 2021 (n = 654), an automated process of filtering out clouded images was required. Additionally, the co-presence of algal and cyanobacterial blooms necessitated the development of a novel index, coined the Algae Resistant Macrophyte Index (ARMI), to deal with the challenges of accurate macrophyte detection. The high spatiotemporal variability of the floating mats meant that a typical, location-based confusion matrix as a means of assessing the accuracy of the decision tree classifier required a different approach which compared the total classified areas with higher resolution images. Controls of lateral and vertical variations in the geochemistry of the Hotazel Fe-Mn Formation at Nchwaning and Gloria mines, Kalahari Manganese Field, South Africa

- Description: The Paleoproterozoic Kalahari manganese field (KMF) in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, hosts a large resource of manganese ores that has been of great interest over many decades. The Kalahari Manganese deposit (KMD), which is the largest of five erosional relics of the Hotazel Formation in the KMF, hosts three beds of Mn ores with alternating layers of banded iron formation (BIF) and hematite lutite. These three rock types are all evaluated for their mineralogy and geochemistry in this study, with emphasis on lateral and vertical distributions across the Gloria and Nchwaning Mines in the northernmost KMF, an area of high-grade, hydrothermally altered Mn mineralisation. The Mn ores of the Hotazel formation are traditionally categorised into two types. The carbonate-rich low Mn grade (Mn≤40 wt. %) ores (Mamatwan-type) domninates the largest part of the KMD, while carbonate-free, high Mn grade (Mn≥ 45 wt.%) ore (Wessels-type) occurs in the northernmost KMD. The Wessels-type ores are considered as the hydrothermally altered product of Mamatwan-type ores, and as indicated above, are the focus of this study. Five drill cores containing Wessels-type ores from the Nchwaning and Gloria area of the northern KMD were analysed to help understand the petrographic and particularly the geochemical variations in the Hotazel Fe-Mn Formation, both laterally for a given Mn layer of the three, and vertically across Mn layers as captured in specific drillcores. Petrographic and whole-rock geochemical results obtained from the three rock types of the Hotazel Formation show variations in their mineralogical and geochemical compositions, especially in the high-grade Mn ores themselves. Most of the samples of the BIFs layers are dominated by hematite and chert occurring in banded fashion, which is typical of a normal carbonate-free altered BIF discussed in this thesis. The BIFs can also be locally enriched in hematite (ferruginised), occurring as massive hematite ores usually at the top of the stratigraphic profiles. The presence of aegirine-rich assemblages is also noted occurring in some of the BIF and hematite lutite sections immediately above and below the Mn ore beds. The high-grade Mn ore beds vary greatly in mineralogy and texture of the ores laterally and even within a single drill core. In an extreme case, a single drillcore sampled from the Gloria mine (GL57) contains high-grade Wessels-type ore in the upper Mn bed and low-grade, Mamatwan-type ore in the lower Mn layer. Geochemically, the Mn ore bodies also show substantial geochemical variability, although a net increase in the Mn grade downward is usually characterised by a corresponding depletion in mainly bulk Ca, Si and carbonate. However, the Fe content appears to be consistently higher in the upper ore bodies of the drillcores than the lower ones, and the increase in the concentration of the Fe-oxide expectedly causes a relative decrease in the bulk Mn-oxide concentration, usually expressed as an antithetic relationship between the two elements. In terms of trace element distributions, this appears to be more significant in the Mn ores than the other two rock types affected by the same alteration process, probably due to the presence of Mn phases such as hausmannite and braunite serving as good hosts to several trace elements. Cu, Zn, Pb and to a lesser extent Mo are trace metals that appear to show elevated concentration levels (net enrichments) in high-grade Mn ore by comparison to the presumed Mamatwan-type protolith. Ba is an additional element of clear enrichment, manifested mainly as the mineral barite. The Northern KMD has a complex post-depositional history, which includes the intrusion of NE-SW-trending dykes, formation of the Mapedi/Gamagara erosional unconformity, normal faulting associated with the Wessels event and major thrust faults in the western part of the northern KMD. These structural events all have the potential to have contributed to the alteration and subsequent enrichment of the Mn ores in the Nchwaning and Gloria area. As such, the mineralogical, textural, and geochemical variations observed here can tentatively be attributed to the different structural features in the northern KMD. Classic interpretations suggest that normal N-S-trending fault structures have acted as fluid conduits for hydrothermal fluids, which led to the metasomatic alteration of the Mn ore body laterally. Drill cores proximal to and evidently affected by fault-controlled alteration in the SE and SW-portions of the Nchwaning area, have comparable mineralogical and geochemical characteristics for both ore bodies (upper and lower) with subdued alteration effects from the unconformed contact above. Fluids associated with the Mapedi/Gamagara unconformity, would have percolated down-stratigraphy causing oxidative ferruginisation, which led to the formation of massive hematite ores in the top BIF layers and ferruginised Mn ores in the Mn ore beds. This alteration effect appears more prominent in a drill core from the northern part of the study area where the unconformity contact appears more proximal to the upper Mn bed. Drill cores located in the western part of the Nchwaning area seem to also capture evidence of fluid alteration with enrichment in Na recorded in the local abundance of the mineral aegirine. High-resolution hydraulic modelling as an approach to planning rehabilitation interventions in unchanneled valley-bottom palmiet wetlands: a case study of the Kromme River

- Description: This study employs high-resolution hydraulic modelling techniques to inform the planning of rehabilitation interventions in unchanneled valley-bottom palmiet wetlands, using the upper Kromme River wetlands as a case study. It investigates the impact of geomorphic processes on the morphology of the valley, how changes in valley morphology affect the flow characteristics (velocity, stream power, depth) of the river, and how these changes affect the geomorphic dynamics of the wetlands. An aerial LiDAR survey was conducted for a 23km-long reach of the upper Kromme River where the wetlands are situated. A high-resolution (5 m) DTM was created from the LiDAR data to examine the valley morphology. Focusing on three major wetland basins, the relationship between valley morphology and geomorphic processes was examined using high-resolution imagery that accompanied the LiDAR survey and Google Satellite imagery. The hydraulic modelling software HEC-RAS was used to investigate the spatial variation in velocity, stream power, and water depth down the surveyed length of the river. The model outputs provide insight into the effect of valley morphology on flow characteristics. The river appears to have a graded longitudinal profile, such that there is a systematic reduction in slope down its length. Water flowing down the river works, through the processes of erosion and deposition, to control the longitudinal slope, channel planform, and geometry to create a valley with a gentle longitudinal slope (approximately 1%) and a broad, near-horizontal valley-bottom in the mountainous landscape of the Cape Fold Mountains. The overall form of the Kromme River valley and wetlands is primarily a consequence of repeated cycles of cutting and filling. Tributary alluvial fans control the initiation of gully erosion in the wetlands, but their effect is diminished in a downstream direction. Despite a 10-fold increase in discharge down the 23km length of river for a given flood magnitude, there is no significant increase in flow velocity, stream power, or depth in a downstream direction. Consequently, the kinetic energy of the water in the lower wetland basin is surprisingly low. These conditions favour the establishment of palmiet. Flows in eroded reaches are much higher than in non-eroded reaches where discharge is spread across a broad valley bottom. In terms of palmiet establishment and regeneration, this means that areas dominated by depositional processes are best suited to the establishment of palmiet. Based on this information, optimal sites to trial new wetland rehabilitation strategies that employ palmiet were selected. This work supports the importance of understanding the role of geomorphology in wetland structure and dynamics when approaching wetland rehabilitation and is likely to be more sympathetic to natural processes than current interventions. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Geography, 2023

It investigates the impact of geomorphic processes on the morphology of the valley, how changes in valley morphology affect the flow characteristics (velocity, stream power, depth) of the river, and how these changes affect the geomorphic dynamics of the wetlands. An aerial LiDAR survey was conducted for a 23km-long reach of the upper Kromme River where the wetlands are situated. A high-resolution (5 m) DTM was created from the LiDAR data to examine the valley morphology. Focusing on three major wetland basins, the relationship between valley morphology and geomorphic processes was examined using high-resolution imagery that accompanied the LiDAR survey and Google Satellite imagery. The hydraulic modelling software HEC-RAS was used to investigate the spatial variation in velocity, stream power, and water depth down the surveyed length of the river. The model outputs provide insight into the effect of valley morphology on flow characteristics. The river appears to have a graded longitudinal profile, such that there is a systematic reduction in slope down its length. Water flowing down the river works, through the processes of erosion and deposition, to control the longitudinal slope, channel planform, and geometry to create a valley with a gentle longitudinal slope (approximately 1%) and a broad, near-horizontal valley-bottom in the mountainous landscape of the Cape Fold Mountains. The overall form of the Kromme River valley and wetlands is primarily a consequence of repeated cycles of cutting and filling. Tributary alluvial fans control the initiation of gully erosion in the wetlands, but their effect is diminished in a downstream direction. Despite a 10-fold increase in discharge down the 23km length of river for a given flood magnitude, there is no significant increase in flow velocity, stream power, or depth in a downstream direction. Consequently, the kinetic energy of the water in the lower wetland basin is surprisingly low. These conditions favour the establishment of palmiet. Flows in eroded reaches are much higher than in non-eroded reaches where discharge is spread across a broad valley bottom. In terms of palmiet establishment and regeneration, this means that areas dominated by depositional processes are best suited to the establishment of palmiet. Based on this information, optimal sites to trial new wetland rehabilitation strategies that employ palmiet were selected. This study further explores the possibility of widespread alkali metasomatism in the KMF by reporting on and examining the occurrence of sugilite and other alkali-rich minerals at the contact between the Transvaal and Olifantshoek Supergroups in the Hotazel Mine area of the north-eastern KMF. The lithologies observed at the contact show macroscopic (such as cross cutting veins) and microscopic evidence of hydrothermal alteration. Using analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy, results showed that in the north-eastern region of the KMF, the metasomatism observed at the Transvaal-Olifantshoek contact is mainly characterized by enrichment in sodium, and the occurrence of sodium minerals, predominantly in the form of aegirine. The aegirine forms exclusively in the quartzites of the Mapedi Formation along with minerals such as sugilite, baryte, banalsite, amongst others. Albite also occurs within the quartzites, but also within the Mapedi red shales. The secondary nature of these minerals is established by geochemical comparisons with pristine, as well as alkali-metasomatized samples of the same formation which were obtained from other parts of the KMF and Postmasburg. These comparisons showed that the Mapedi quartzites in the north-eastern KMF have undergone extensive oxidation compared to samples of the same formation which were obtained from Postmasburg. The north-eastern quartzites have an average hematite abundance of 17 wt.% compared to Postmasburg quartzite which have an average of 7 wt.% hematite. Furthermore, some quartzite samples contained up to 40 wt.% in hematite content. The comparisons also showed that Mapedi quartzites from the north-eastern KMF are substantially more sodium enriched compared to Mapedi quartzites from the Postmasburg region, which on average have sodium oxide content below detection limits. Geochemical comparisons were made between pristine Hotazel Formation samples from north-western KMF (Gloria Mine) and samples obtained from the north-eastern KMF (Hotazel Mine). Results showed that the samples obtained from the top of the Hotazel Formation (in the Hotazel mine area) are likely altered hematite lutite and not Banded Iron Formation, evident by their substantially high manganese oxide content (over 30 wt.% in some cases). When compared to pristine samples, the lutite also showed evidence of hydrothermal alteration, predominantly in the form of phosphate and barium enrichment, evident by the occurrence of baryte and apatite. The alkali metasomatism occurring at the contact between the Transvaal and Olifantshoek Supergroups was shown to be predominantly characterized by enrichment in Na, K, Li, Al, Ba, Sr, and P. The metasomatism characterized in this study was also proposed to possibly post-date an earlier metasomatic event which was characterized by leaching of silica and extensive oxidation of the rocks observed at the Transvaal-Olifantshoek contact in the north-eastern KMF. Naturally, this will be problematic for both learners and teachers who operate under a policy that dictates that from Grade 4 upwards, English is the medium of instruction in government schools. Literature has shown a general bias towards English as a medium of instruction from both the Namibian government and Namibian parents, despite the broader level of low English proficiency among learners. Research reviewed within this study has outlined the multiple benefits of code-switching for both learners and teachers. In fact, a recent study on the perceptions of code-switching in classrooms among Namibian learners indicated a positive attitude towards code-switching as a learning tool. Grade 8 Technical Drawing classes tend to be challenging due to the complexity and novelty of some of the concepts and terminologies used when teaching the subject. This makes it particularly difficult for learners whose first language is not English. Learners struggle to understand and make meaning of the concepts and objects used in Orthographic Drawing. Code-switching has been seen as a beneficial pedagogical tool. The study was therefore conducted to explore the Grade 8 teachers’ code-switching when teaching Orthographic Drawing in the Khomas educational region, Namibia. The study used the Matrix Language Frame Model by Myers-Scotton as the theoretical framework which focuses on two crucial language aspects of participating in code-switching and the matrix and embedded language, which guided this study. The qualitative approach employed a case study design which was used to gain first-hand experience in the Technical Drawing classrooms. Semi-structured interviews and an observation checklist were the research instruments that were used to generate data on the use of code-switching in Orthographic Drawing. Two schools, two Technical Drawing classes with 40 learners and two teachers in the Khomas region, Namibia were conveniently and purposively sampled. The data were analysed using coding, descriptive statistics and thematic data analysis. The primary and secondary results indicate that code-switching occurrence has constructive effects. However, other scholars have also suggested that teachers' TPACK develops and is shaped by many contexts. This study, therefore, sought to assess the rural senior primary Natural science teachers' TPACK. This qualitative case study was conducted with senior primary Natural science teachers in the educational circuit of Endola. An interpretive paradigm underpinned the study. The study employed semi-structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews, and observation to collect the data. Findings support that the participants draw upon sources of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) closely aligned with Content Knowledge (CK), Technological Content Knowledge (TCK), and Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK) to integrate technology. The study included inadequate professional development, teachers' attitudes, insufficient hardware and internet connectivity, limited technological knowledge, time constraints, and restricted access to technology tools and resources as obstacles for teachers attempting to incorporate technology into their classrooms effectively. Furthermore, the data highlights ICT training and teachers' interest as enablers that motivated participants to integrate technology into their teaching practices. - Description: The Covid-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education systems in human history. The closure of schools and other learning spaces has impacted billions of learners worldwide. The mitigative measures and many new standard operating procedures have brought restrictions and many challenges. The face-to-face traditional teaching method lost its value, and teaching shifted to distance through the integration of technologies. The integration of technologies necessitated the emergency remote teaching process, as it is one of the distance teaching modes that can make teaching possible even for less technologically privileged nations. Literature has shown that the integration and usage of technology during teaching support the development of technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) of teachers. This study, therefore, sought to investigate how the integration and use of technology during the emergency remote teaching of Covid-19 developed the secondary school teachers’ technological pedagogical and content knowledge. The study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm, and a qualitative case study approach was employed. It was conducted in seven secondary schools in the Endola education circuit, Ohangwena region, with the purposeful participation of twenty-six secondary school teachers. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The study was informed by Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory together with the TPACK framework of Thompson and Mishra (2007) as both theoretical and analytical frameworks. The study's results showed that teachers made use of existing technological resources to sustain their teaching efforts during ERT. They encountered various challenges, including a lack of technological expertise (knowledge) among both teachers and learners. The shift to virtual instruction during ERT supported teachers in developing proficient technological pedagogical content knowledge. This research concludes that schools possess the necessary technological infrastructure to enable teachers to incorporate technology into their teaching methods. Furthermore, it highlights that teachers generally hold favourable attitudes toward integrating technology into their instruction. - Description: The Covid-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education systems in human history. The closure of schools and other learning spaces has impacted billions of learners worldwide. The mitigative measures and many new standard operating procedures have brought restrictions and many challenges. The face-to-face traditional teaching method lost its value, and teaching shifted to distance through the integration of technologies. The integration of technologies necessitated the emergency remote teaching process, as it is one of the distance teaching modes that can make teaching possible even for less technologically privileged nations. Literature has shown that the integration and usage of technology during teaching support the development of technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) of teachers. This study, therefore, sought to investigate how the integration and use of technology during the emergency remote teaching of Covid-19 developed the secondary school teachers’ technological pedagogical and content knowledge. The study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm, and a qualitative case study approach was employed. It was conducted in seven secondary schools in the Endola education circuit, Ohangwena region, with the purposeful participation of twenty-six secondary school teachers. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The study was informed by Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory together with the TPACK framework of Thompson and Mishra (2007) as both theoretical and analytical frameworks. The study's results showed that teachers made use of existing technological resources to sustain their teaching efforts during ERT. They encountered various challenges, including a lack of technological expertise (knowledge) among both teachers and learners. The shift to virtual instruction during ERT supported teachers in developing proficient technological pedagogical content knowledge. This research concludes that schools possess the necessary technological infrastructure to enable teachers to incorporate technology into their teaching methods. Furthermore, it highlights that teachers generally hold favourable attitudes toward integrating technology into their instruction. In the process, a rich jurisprudence has developed on the core content of the right to basic education, with findings by the courts that the right includes an entitlement to a number of educational resources. These include access to school infrastructure, learner-teacher support materials, desks and chairs, scholar transport, teaching and non-teaching staff, and nutrition. My research recommends that the National Institute of Educational Development together with the Ministry of Education, Art and Culture in Namibia, provide teachers with professional development opportunities on how to develop learners’ computational estimation. Such professional development will further develop teachers’ mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge. Investigation into methods of recovering campylobacter spp. from river water samples

They are the leading cause of diarrheal disease globally, consumption of and contact with water contaminated by faeces is a major risk factor for transmission of these organisms to humans. Rivers used for recreation and domestic and agricultural activities represent all the risk factors for Campylobacter spp. pollution and human exposure. Campylobacter spp. However, effective methods to recover Campylobacter spp. from river water samples are lacking, indicating the need for the development of more efficient methods of detection and isolation of these organisms from environmental water samples. Campylobacter detection in a water sample is critical to ascertain potential risks to humans. The aim of this study was to determine a suitable method for the detection of Campylobacter spp. from river water samples and the objectives were to (i) to evaluate the performance of different methods used for the recovery of Campylobacter spp. from environmental water samples based on Campylobacter colony count and PCR identification results, (ii) isolate and enumerate Campylobacter cells from river water samples, and (iii) identify Campylobacter spp. in river water samples. The Bloukrans River was chosen for this study because it is suspected to be contaminated by faecal inputs from nearby informal settlements without adequate sanitation, as well as untreated/insufficiently treated effluents from nearby wastewater treatment plants. First, the physicochemical quality of the river water and the presence of faecal contamination were assessed to confirm suitability for Campylobacter spp. survival and presence. Then different approaches to sample, concentrate and recover Campylobacter spp. from river water samples were assessed. The different methods assessed were (i) direct enrichment of water samples without prior concentration, (ii) prior concentration of water samples by centrifugation followed by membrane filtration of supernatant, and after that, pooling the residue and pellet together for enrichment, (iii) sampling by the Moore Swab technique. For all three methods, enrichment in Bolton broth supplemented with Bolton antibiotics was conducted. This was followed by plating on modified cefoperazone charcoal deoxycholate agar (mCCDA) and incubation under a microaerophilic atmosphere at 42°C for 48 h. Colony morphology, Gram staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to identify and characterize the microorganisms. The growth of blue colonies on the mFc agar surface confirmed presence and faecal pollution of the Bloukrans River. The physicochemical properties, based on the range of pH measured at different sites of the river (between acidic 3.45 to 6.42 and alkaline 7.2 to 8.74) indicate that Campylobacter spp. can thrive in the river. Based on the results from enumeration and sequencing of colonies recovered by each method, it was discovered that the most suitable method to recover Campylobacter spp. from river water samples is by prior centrifugation (14,000 × g for 30 minutes) followed by membrane filtration of the supernatant, and subsequent pooling of the residue and pellet. The pooled residue and pellet might have increased Campylobacter spp. concentrations aiding more growth during the enrichment of Campylobacter spp. from the river water samples. Results from enumerating Campylobacter spp. cells from river water samples indicate that Campylobacter spp. are present in Bloukrans River. The sequence obtained from the PCR product indicates that the species found were Campylobacter jejuni (96% homology as evaluated by BLAST). This study sought to understand employees’ perceptions of non-standard employment (NSE), the reasons why employers resort to NSE and why they use particular types of NSE. In addition, the research explored how labour law protections for NSE are applied in particular workplaces. Drawing on the regulation approach, which provides a conceptual framework to explain changes in production and employment relationships under specific spatio-temporal conditions, this study focused on three companies in Makhanda. Furthermore, this study employed a qualitative research method to explore the employees’ perceptions on non-standard work. This was done by using an interpretive approach to explore how workers experience NSE and how Eastern Cape citizens in Makhanda navigate the scourge of unemployment and exploitation in the labour market. Moreover, the research investigated how employees experience the efficacy of their employment rights in the workplace. The employment rights observed in the study include (among others) leave, contract of employment and collective bargaining; all of which are provisions in the Labour Relations Act. The findings in the study do validate the use of NSE as a ‘tool’ to curb high unemployment. However, the study finds that the positive result of job creation does not signify job security for non-standard workers, instead beneath the rhetoric of job creation and investment, lies hidden the exploitation of vulnerable groups of citizens and extension of precarious forms of employment. This is because businesses engage in economic competition locally and globally. Therefore, in order to successfully compete against other, employer’s cut on labour expenses by adopting a “race to the bottom,” the effect of which is paying employees below the minimum wage. Moreover, this study opposes the argument that NSE is a stepping stone to permanent employment. The conditions which prevail in NSE are distinctly different from those in the Standard Employment Relationship (SER), making it difficult for employees to transition to a new labour market. - Description: This study describes three internationally recognised sopranos and their presentations of character psychology on stage, during their performances of the famous “mad scene” from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor. These sopranos are Joan Sutherland, Mariella Devia, and Lisette Oropesa. I use Margaret Kartomi’s (2014) model of performativity to interpret the “madness” depicted by the three selected sopranos, as based on my interpretations of commercially released audio-visual recordings of their performances in the role of Lucia. Through analysing these performances with the help of Kartomi’s performativity model (which focuses on persona, emotion-and intersubjectivity, and reception), my research determines – with speculative interpretation, and within the reasonable limits of standard psychiatric frameworks – which mental illnesses the sopranos can be understood to have portrayed in their interpretations of the role of Lucia. The study’s goal is not to make an accurate mental health diagnosis of someone’s portrayal of a fictional character. (Considering the fact that one cannot make accurate mental health diagnoses for people who do not exist.) Rather, my focus is to discover which dramatic and possibly musical characteristics are utilised to perform this fictional character and give expressive content to her “madness”. The concept of “madness” and its psychological characterisation during performance thus becomes the framework from which to interpret and understand vocal and acting techniques related to opera in general and to bel canto more specifically. My research findings are that the three performers use facial expressions, different aspects of using the voice through bel canto singing, and body movements as a way of expression. Bel canto characteristics include coloratura embellishments, fioritura, melismas, messa di voce, squillo and chiaroscuro. The sopranos also show musical and dramatic elements in how they respond to the flute or glass harmonica during the ‘Mad Scene’ – which counts as the personae expressed by the performers. These personae are further applied in the emotional and intersubjectivity and the reception aspects of Kartomi’s performativity model. In the emotional and intersubjectivity aspect, the chorus and other characters singing on stage are read as emphasising the reaction of society on the mentally dysfunctional behaviour enacted by the sopranos. In the reception aspect, reviewers are used to filling in for audience members. I read their reactions as contributing factors in forming an understanding of the interpretations of the “mad scene” performed by the three sopranos. My reading of the three interpretations of the “mad scene” goes further by subjectively interpreting how these sopranos approximate different states of mental collapse. These readings include approximations of psychosis such as mania, dissociative personality disorder, and paranoid schizophrenic behaviour. The use of creative-arts therapies in treating trauma-related mental health conditions in South Africa: perspectives from three practising creative-arts therapists

- Description: Multiple factors contribute to the prevailing mental health conditions of South Africans. According to Kaminer and Eagle (2010, p.8), 75% of South Africans are trauma survivors, half of whom have experienced multiple traumas, some directly and some indirectly. However, many trauma survivors are not adequately treated due to the limited access and availability of mental health specialists in the country. Thus, mainstream medical treatments ought to be supplemented by alternative forms of therapy such as creative-arts therapy that cater to the wide demographic range of citizens in South Africa. This research aims to explore the efficacy of creative-arts therapies as a treatment for trauma-related mental health conditions in South Africa from the perspectives of three practising creative-arts therapists. The research is a qualitative study and uses Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to interpret the data. The research participants consisted of three accredited creative-art therapists practising in Music, Art, and Dance. The participants were interviewed using semi-structured, in-depth interviews which were conducted online. The interview data was transcribed and analysed using the IPA framework provided by Smith, Flowers and Larkin (2009). The results yielded three superordinate themes which were supported by eight subordinate themes. The results suggest that creative-arts therapies are underutilized in South Africa due to a lack of public awareness and general (mis)perceptions about mental health conditions. Furthermore, access to these therapies in formal settings is limited as they are not offered as treatment options in public health facilities, which negatively impacts the viability of creative-arts therapies practice in the country. Creative-arts therapies offer several unique benefits to individuals of all ages, backgrounds and abilities as they do not require prior artistic knowledge or experience to participate in treatment. In addition, they are non-verbal which helps to bridge the language and cultural barriers that often arise as a result of South Africa’s diverse cultural population. Finally, creative-arts therapies are an effective method of treating mental health conditions incurred through trauma as they focus on accessing stored trauma in the body or unconscious mind through a natural and non-judgemental platform of creative expression. As a result, they address the physical, emotional, psychological, and cognitive effects of trauma while empowering the individual. In conclusion, this research suggests that creative-arts therapies are highly effective in the treatment of trauma-related mental health conditions, particularly in a country like South Africa which experiences high incidents of trauma. They should be better integrated into public health care facilities so that they are accessible to the general public. This will result in an increase in the use of creative-arts therapies as a treatment option for mental health conditions, particularly those related to trauma. My practice-based research is interested in a creative interpretation of these ancient philosophies and practices in the context of postcolonial life. The project in many ways re-members through observation of socio-political issues such as inequality, violence, and vandalism as reflections of internal challenges of the individual self in current reality. In essence, my discussion in this paper highlights the need for healing grief and loss for the well-being – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – of society. Self-definition is the core of any community and we see this in the philosophy of the African proverb umntu ngumntu ngabantu, ‘I am because you are’. ‘I am’ is a set of beliefs that construct the individual self; our life’s course then becomes a constant molding of the body and the world around us. The wisdom of ubuntu was, and is, a catalyst for many African cultures, as this law recognizes each individual as important and equal in the community. As a descendant of various indigenous clans originating in Africa the well-being and balance of my being is determined by how much I know about who I am. Consequently, being a part of the generation that is experiencing the transitioning phases from apartheid I question the ways we are dealing with the residue of coloniality concerning all aspects of self; the physical, emotional, and mental bodies of self. My creative work is a reflection of the exercises I implemented to cultivate selfhood as a way to participate in and control my reality as a marginalized member of society. The different chapters touch on many intersecting theories about tools for healing/soothing the self. The creative process experimented with the various concepts embedded in the expression ‘I am because you are’. In the process of this research, I learned that knowing yourself is one of the principles of ubuntu, which teaches me that I cannot be or give what I do not have. The themes I explore through the above expression are self-love, self-acceptance, and self-respect using a creative lens. This practice-based research proposes a concept; the act of love as a decolonial gesture. My exhibition Vuleka Mhlaba Ndinegene1 utilizes visual language to convey the need for more conversations on healing using natural elements, as a way to make a connection between self, the natural environment, and community. In the first and second chapters, the paper focuses on practices employed by artists such as Lhola Amira, Guadalupe Maravilla, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Tony Gum, Lina Iris Viktor, and Aida Muleneh, to relate the various approaches to re-member the severed connection between self, nature, and community. The exhibition explores my culture and experiences as a ‘Coloured’ woman in Makhanda through storytelling. I use the term ‘Coloured’ with quotation marks to remain respectful to those who do not wish to reclaim the term. My minithesis analyses how video games as artworks can be a mode of storytelling and can encourage sociocultural awareness. In my research, I use storytelling as a tool and autoethnography as a methodology to both discuss and influence my practice. For my MFA installation, I have created a digital interactive website that uses the same language as a video game. Throughout my process, I have used two video games, That Dragon Cancer and Boet Fighter, as case studies, in order to help the building and creation of my autoethnographic art video game. My art video game explores my experiences of my culture and living in a small town. Through the creation of four fictionalised characters, which are loosely based on true life experiences and first-hand observations, I can reveal and unpack cultural experiences and biases that I have observed over the years. Each character in the game grapples with one of three prominent themes; stereotypes, ‘swagger’ and texturism. Furthermore, through using autoethnography as a methodology and the researcher as the phenomenon (Ellis, 2004: 45). This study contributes to the gap in ‘Coloured’ cultural diversities that exist outside the lens of the Western Cape experience.
