- Description: Zinc phthalocyanine bearing four ascorbic acid units (formed via ester bond between zinc carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines and ascorbic acid) was synthesized and characterized using different spectroscopic methods. The complex (with or without ascorbic acid) was further adsorbed onto single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and further characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The photophysical properties of the complexes were studied. The synthesized complex showed better photophysical properties when compared to the carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines alone, this is evident in the increase of the triplet quantum yields (ΦT), triplet life-times (τT) and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ). The zinc phthalocyanines bearing ascorbic acid showed improved triplet life-times even in the presence of SWCNTs.

The membranes also proved to be active in the photocatalytic oxidation of 4-chlorophenol in water where the reaction followed second-order kinetics. At 3.24 × 10−4 mol L−1, the photo-oxidation of 4-chlorophenol was observed with a kobs of 35.9 L mol−1 min−1 and a half-life of 86 min.

These fabricated complexes and their conjugates with NGQDs could serve as a plausible nonlinear optical (NLO) material due to their fascinating NLO properties.

- Description: The creation of wealth is an important issue in any society, and entrepreneurship is regarded as an important catalyst in the creation of new wealth. This presents a challenge to develop entrepreneurship successfully. An important site for the development of entrepreneurship is higher education. The challenge however, is that there is a lack of a general understanding on how to educate students for entrepreneurship. In addition, current thought and practice on entrepreneurship education is historically biased, implying that graduates are essentially prepared for the past instead of for the future. From the perspective of higher education, the problem is how to develop current students to be entrepreneurial in the future. What is needed is to project into the future and then to develop an understanding of what should be taught as well as how it should be taught today. A versatile research technique that can assist in achieving this objective is the Delphi technique, as it is used to conduct futures research or research into areas where knowledge is incomplete. The Delphi method is a type of group interview, using the collective opinion of knowledgeable experts. The technique makes use of several rounds of data collection and feedback to create a consensus of opinion. Making use of the Delphi technique, research is being designed that will formulate expert‑based strategic guidelines on entrepreneurial education within the South African higher education sector. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the research design considerations that arise in the use of the Delphi technique for this purpose and how they are addressed. The main characteristics of the Delphi are presented and arguments for the use of the Delphi within a constructivist paradigm are discussed. Practical issues related to the design of the Delphi, panel‑member selection, and the formulation of panel questions, are examined. In illustrating these design considerations, the paper demonstrates a pragmatic approach to research design as well as the importance of creating coherence between the research question, the research paradigm, the research method and its use, encouraging research practitioners to adopt a more systematic, deliberate and philosophically‑based approach to research design.

In short, I argue, perhaps scandalously, that one of the central conditions for genuine agency is that our lives are and must continue to be, to a large extent, out of our personal control. The promise of too much personal control, not too little (as Kane thinks), is what is wrong with Skinner's social utopia.

A novel approach for the preparation of supramolecular hybrid conjugates of GQDs and phthalocyanines (Pcs) via an in situ one-step bottom-up route was employed in this study. The as-synthesized GQDs and their Pc conjugates were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques and their photophysicochemical properties evaluated. Notably, the singlet oxygen quantum yields of the Pcs in the presence of GQDs were found to be 0.51 and 0.74 for 1-GQDs and 2-GQDs, respectively, as compared to the Pcs alone (0.18 and 0.70 for complex 1 and 2, respectively). The increase in triplet quantum yield (ΦT) values is complemented by a decrease in fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF). ΦT value of 0.96 obtained for the complex 2 after conjugation with GQDs is better or higher than the value of 0.74 as reported in the literature when complex 2 was conjugated to semiconductor QDs. Hence, this novel approach resulted in the derivation of hybrid materials with potentials for various photophysicochemical applications such as photodynamic therapy and photocatalysis.

The nanomaterials were arranged in various ways on the glassy carbon electrode, to investigate the effect of the electrode interface on the operational characteristics of a biosensor. The immobilized aptamer selectively recognizes HER2 on the electrode interface, and this leads to an increased charge transfer resistance (Rct) of the electrode when using ferricyanide as the electrochemical probe. The developed immunosensors showed high sensitivity with the best detection limit of 0.00141 ng/mL. The results showed that the method is simple and sensitive enough for the determination of HER2 in serum samples with good reproducibility and accuracy.

Here we examine the benefits from and barriers to participation in 26 conservation and environmental civic organisations in South Africa, categorised by their primary mission as botanical, wildlife or green. Questionnaires were sent to volunteers on the mailing list of each civic organisation (and 66 responses received), supplemented with direct interviews with key staff and five focus group discussions. There were differences in the perception of benefits obtained and barriers experienced by volunteers between the three groups. Respondents from botanical and green civic organisations rated enjoyment of the task as the primary benefit, whereas the most common response amongst wildlife organisation volunteers was a higher level of life satisfaction. Lack of time was a major barrier across all groups, whilst lack of communication between organisers and volunteers was mentioned frequently by volunteers in wildlife and green organisations. The mean number of hours offered per volunteer was significantly higher amongst wildlife organisations than either botanical or green ones, but for all three, the value of volunteer contributions was, at several millions of rand annually, substantial. There was no relationship between the number of perceived benefits and the number of hours volunteered. This study indicates that motivations and barriers differ amongst volunteers, which is important to acknowledge in attracting and optimising the contributions of conservation and environmental volunteers.

- Description: In this study, the synthesis and characterization of a new Schiff base and its cobalt(II) and iron(III) complexes were performed fully characterized by common spectroscopic techniques such as 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, UV–Vis and MS and elemental analysis. The cathodes prepared with only activated carbon, Co-Schiff base complex, and Fe-Schiff base complex mixed with activated carbon as the carrier were examined in single chamber air cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The spectroscopic results confirm the structure of novel Schiff base and its complexes with cobalt (II) and Fe(III). MFC results showed that Fe-Schiff base complex generated higher voltage generation using glucose as the carbon source. Cyclic voltammetry results showed the conductivity and catalytic features of the cathodes developed in this study. Scanning electron microscopic results showed the distribution the complexes on the cathode surface. In conclusion, a novel Schiff base and its complexes with cobalt (II) and iron (III) can be employed into MFC technology to be used in green electricity production, and might help decreasing the operating costs of wastewater treatment plants.

- Description: In this study, the synthesis and characterization of a new Schiff base and its cobalt(II) and iron(III) complexes were performed fully characterized by common spectroscopic techniques such as 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, UV–Vis and MS and elemental analysis. The cathodes prepared with only activated carbon, Co-Schiff base complex, and Fe-Schiff base complex mixed with activated carbon as the carrier were examined in single chamber air cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The spectroscopic results confirm the structure of novel Schiff base and its complexes with cobalt (II) and Fe(III). MFC results showed that Fe-Schiff base complex generated higher voltage generation using glucose as the carbon source. Cyclic voltammetry results showed the conductivity and catalytic features of the cathodes developed in this study. Scanning electron microscopic results showed the distribution the complexes on the cathode surface. In conclusion, a novel Schiff base and its complexes with cobalt (II) and iron (III) can be employed into MFC technology to be used in green electricity production, and might help decreasing the operating costs of wastewater treatment plants.
