- Description: The payoff functions of contingent claims (options) of one variable are prominent in Financial Economics and thus assume a fundamental role in option pricing theory. Some of these payoff functions are continuous, piecewise-defined and linear or affine. Such option payoff functions can be analysed in a useful way when they are represented in additive, Boolean normal, graphical and linear form. The issue of converting such payoff functions expressed in the additive, linear or graphical form into an equivalent Boolean normal form, has been considered by several authors for more than half-a-century to better-understand the role of such functions. One aspect of our study is to unify the foregoing different forms of representation, by creating algorithms that convert a payoff function expressed in graphical form into Boolean normal form and then into the additive form and vice versa. Applications of these algorithms are considered in a general theoretical sense and also in the context of specific option contracts wherever relevant. The use of these algorithms have yielded easy computation of the area enclosed by the graph of various functions using min and max operators in several ways, which, in our opinion, are important in option pricing. Through modification of the chemical characteristics of nanofibers by pre- and post-electrospinning treatments, three different diagnostic probes were successfully developed. These were the fluorescent pyridylazo-2-naphthol-poly(acrylic acid) nanofiber probe, the colorimetric probe based on glutathione-stabilized silver/copper alloy nanoparticles and the colorimetric probe based on 2-(2’-Pyridyl)-imidazole functionalized nanofibers. The probes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The fluorescent nanofiber probe was developed towards the determination of Ni²⁺. Covalently functionalized pyridylazo-2-naphthol-poly(acrylic acid) polymeric nanofibers were employed. The solid state Ni²⁺ probe exhibited a good correlation between the fluorescence intensity and nickel concentration up to 1.0 mg/mL based on the Stern-Volmer mechanism. The detection limit of the nanofiber probe was found to be 0.07 ng/mL. The versatility of the fluorescent probe was demonstrated by affording a simple, rapid and selective detection of Ni²⁺ in the presence of other competing metal ions by direct analysis without employing any sample handling steps. For the second part of the study, a simple strategy based on the in-situ synthesis of the glutathione stabilized silver/copper alloy nanoparticles (Ag/Cu alloy NPs) in nylon 6 provided a fast procedure for fabricating a colorimetric probe for the detection of Ni²⁺ in water samples. The electrospun nanofiber composites responded to Ni²⁺ ions but did not suffer any interference from the other metal ions. The effect of Ni²⁺ concentration on the nanocomposite fibers was considered and the “eye-ball” limit of detection was found to be 5.8 μg/mL. Lastly, the third probe was developed by covalently linking an imidazole derivative; 2-(2′-Pyridyl)-imidazole (PIMH) to Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVBC) and nylon 6 nanofibers by post-electrospinning treatments using a wet chemical method and graft copolymerization technique, respectively. The post-electrospinning modifications of the nanofibers were achieved without altering their fibrous morphology. The color change to red-orange in the presence of Fe²⁺ for both the grafted nylon 6 (white) and the chemically modified PVBC (yellow) nanofibers was instantaneous. The developed diagnostic probes exhibited the desired selectivity towards the targeted metal ions.

Faecal source tracking and water quality in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Water quality is concerning as many still lack access to safe drinking water. Alternate sources such as rivers (FC up to 1600 CFUs/100 mL) and rainwater are often polluted. Rainwater tanks require maintenance to improve water quality, but could be used for non-potable purposes or irrigation. Grahamstown infrastructural failures initiate deviations from DWAF 1996 domestic water guidelines for microorganisms within the distribution system. Frequent testing can decrease risks of waterborne diseases. Limitations to this are inaccessibility of rural areas, distances from testing centres and costs. The low cost H2S strip test able to be used onsite by communities, may aid in risk assessment. H2S strip test results are not affected by sulphate (14 to 4240 mg/L) or nitrite (up to 47 mg/L). Transportation of the H2S strip tests between 10 and 32°C does not modify results significantly. Similarly to other studies: Klebsiella spp.; Enterobacter spp. and Serratia spp. were isolated from H2S strip tests. The mH2S strip test corresponds best with HPC in treated water, while in untreated river water it has approximately 90% correspondence with FCs, while survival of FC causes discrepancies with the H2S test after 22 days. A faecal coliform inactivation rate of 0.1 CFUs/ day, may be longer than many pathogens. Faecal source tracking, not currently practised in South Africa, could aid health risk assessments for disaster management, which would improve the NMMP programme. Bacterial survival times could propose the time period for which water is unsafe. Bifidobacteria and Rhodococcus are proposed to help identify the faecal pollution source. But enumeration of Rhodococcus is too lengthy (21 days). The tracking ratio of bifidobacteria (between 0.1 to 6.25) is not source definitive. The bifidobacteria survival rate, could indicator the time since faecal pollution. The bifidobacteria average survival rate is 2.3 CFUs per day for both groups. The culturability and selectivity of agar is still poor, with total bifidobacteria less selectively culturable. Enterococci overgrowth of TB was decreased by Beerens media. SUB is still useful to identify potential human faecal inputs. A single tracking method is thus not suitable alone, but requires a combination of techniques.

- Description: This study investigates the use of modern and izibongo (praise poetry) techniques in representing women in selected isiXhosa poems. The main interest of the study is to determine whether the same techniques to depict men are used when writing about women. It is also the interest of the study to ascertain how gender issues are dealt with in the selected poems. Seminal studies on izibongo by eminent scholars in this field show a serious lack of critique and little recognition of women in African languages’ poetry in general and in isiXhosa in particular. Pioneering studies in Nguni poetry about women have thus recommended that serious studies on poetry about women be undertaken. The analyses of selected poems by established isiXhosa poets show that modern poetry conventions are significantly used together with izibongo techniques. These techniques are used without any gender differentiation, which is another point of interest of this study. There are however instances where images specific to women are used. Such use has however not been found to be demeaning of women in any way. Poems where modern poetry forms and conventions are used tend to deal with subjects who have international or an urban area background. Even though the modern poetry conventions are used with izibongo techniques the presence of the modern literary conventions is prominent. This is the case particularly with poems about women in politics. That some female poet seems to accept some cultural practices that are viewed to be undermining the status of women does not take away the voice of protest against this oppression by some of the selected poets. These two voices, one of acceptance and the other one of protest are used as a basis for a debate around a need for a literary theory that addresses the question of African culture with special reference to isiXhosa poetry about women. The success of the selected poets with both modern and izibongo techniques is a good sign for the development of isiXhosa poetry in general and isiXhosa poetry about women. It is strongly recommended that continued research of a serious nature concerning poetry about, and produced by women, be undertaken.

- Description: Pollution of aquatic resources in Uganda is on the increase and the trends are expected to increase with increase in population size and urbanisation. Assessment and mitigation of the environmental impacts on water quality and biodiversity have now become necessary. The aim of the study was to integrate invertebrate and fish as bioindicators and fish histopathology as a biomarker in the assessment of water quality deterioration in urban wetlands in Uganda. The integration harnesses the advantages and counteracts the shortcomings of each method and thus builds a more robust diagnostic tool that gives a better view of the impacts to the entire ecosystem. Four endpoints which included, physicochemical variables, benthic macroinvertebrate bioindicators, fish bioindicators and fish histopathology biomarkers were compared between varied effluent-impacted wetlands (Murchison Bay in Kampala, and Kirinya, Masese and Winday Bay in Jinja) and a non-impacted reference wetland (Lwanika in Mayuge). Results from the effluent-impacted sites differed from the less impacted reference site. The two sampling locations at Murchison Bay (inshore and offshore) and one sampling location at Kirinya (inshore), that were highly impacted with urban effluent, showed elevated nutrient levels, low pH, dissolved oxygen and secchi depth readings. This corresponded with low invertebrate taxa and fish species diversity and richness; and severe histopathological responses in liver, gonads and gills of O. niloticus. Sensitive taxa such as ephemeroptera and trichoptera were completely absent while pollution tolerant taxa Chironomus sp, Corbicula and Oligochaeta were present. Also notable was the absence of many native haplochromines and presence of mainly Brycinus sadleri, Oreochromis niloticus and leucostictus. The organs manifested high prevalence of severe inflammatory and regressive changes and higher organ indices that fell within the pathological category. These sites were consistently classified as highly polluted under the four endpoints. The reference site was classified as least polluted while Masese and Winday Bay were moderately polluted. Results suggested that the approach of using invertebrate and fish as bioindicators and the fish histopathology as a biomarker, in relation to water quality physicochemical variables was a useful tool in highlighting the spatial differences in environmental quality.

SEM and electrochemical characterizations of poly-MTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGE showed that MTAPc had been deposited on the MWCNTBPPGE surface, and that the poly-CoTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGE exhibited the fastest electron transfer kinetics of all the poly-MTAPc-MWCNT-BPPGEs. Using amitrole and asulam as test analytes, electrochemical experiments showed that, amongst the CPEs, the FePcNP-CPE and NiPcNP-CPE displayed the most electrocatalytic behavior towards amitrole and asulam oxidation, respectively, and further experiments were done to obtain the electrochemical parameters associated with these electrodes and the corresponding analytes. Although, the FePcNP/MWCNT- BPPGE displayed electrocatalytic behavior towards amitrole oxidation in comparison with the bare BPPGE, it was less electrocatalytic than the FePcNP-CPE in terms of detection potential. The NiPcNP/MWCNT-BPPGE displayed the same detection potential as the NiPcNP-CPE. The increased seasonal abundances, diversity and highly aggregated nature of these scarabaeid species in summer months, suggested that targeting and control strategies for these pests should be considered in this season. Increased rainfall, relative humidity and soil temperatures were linked to the increased occurrence of scarab adults and neonate grubs. Beauveria brongniartii (Saccardo) Petch epizootics were recorded at two sites in the KZN Midlands North on H. sommeri. Seventeen different fluorescently-labelled microsatellite PCR primers were used to target 78 isolates of Beauveria sp. DNA. Microsatellite data resolved two distinct clusters of Beauveria isolates which represented the Beauveria bassiana senso stricto (Balsamo) Vuillemin and B. brongniartii species groups. These groupings were supported by two gene regions, the nuclear ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and the nuclear B locus (Bloc) gene of which 23 exemplar Beauveria isolates were represented and sequenced. When microsatellite data were analysed, 26 haplotypes among 58 isolates of B. brongniartii were distinguished. Relatively low levels of genetic diversity were detected in B. brongniartii and isolates were shown to be closely related. There was no genetic differentiation between the two sites, Harden Heights and Canema in the KZN Midlands North. High gene flow from swarming H. sommeri beetles is the proposed mechanism for this lack of genetic differentiation between populations. Microsatellite analyses also showed that B. brongniartii conidia were being cycled from arboreal to subterranean habitats in the environment by H. sommeri beetles. This was the first record of this species of fungus causing epizootics on the larvae and adults of H. sommeri in South Africa. The virulence of 21 isolates of Beauveria brongniartii and two isolates of B. bassiana were evaluated against the adults and larvae of S. affinis and the adults of H. sommeri and Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Despite being closely-related, B. brongniartii isolates varied significantly in their virulence towards different hosts and highlighted the host specific nature of B. brongniartii towards S. affinis when compared to B. bassiana. Adults of S. affinis were significantly more susceptible to B. brongniartii isolates than the second (L2) or third instar (L3) grubs. The median lethal time (LT₅₀) of the most virulent B. brongniartii isolate (C13) against S. affinis adults was 7.8 days and probit analysis estimated a median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) of 4.4×10⁷ conidia/ml⁻¹. When L2 grubs were treated with a concentration of 1.0×10⁸ conidia/ml⁻¹, B. brongniartii isolates HHWG1, HHB39A and C17 caused mortality in L2 grubs within 18.4-19.8 days (LT₅₀). Beauveria brongniartii isolate HHWG1 was tested against the L3 grubs of S. affinis at four different concentrations. At the lowest concentration (1×10⁶ conidia/ml⁻¹), the LT₅₀ was 25.8 days, and at the highest concentration (1×10⁹ conidia/ml⁻¹) the LT₅₀ dropped to 15.1 days. The persistence of B. bassiana isolate 4222 formulated on rice and wheat bran and buried at eight field sites in the KZN Midlands North was evaluated by plating out a suspension of treated soil onto a selective medium. All eight field sites showed a significant decline in B. bassiana CFUs per gram of soil over time, with few conidia still present in the samples after a year. Greater declines in CFUs were observed at some sites but there were no significant differences observed in the persistence of conidia formulated on rice or wheat bran as carriers. Overall, poor persistence of B. bassiana isolate 4222 was attributed to suboptimum temperatures, rainfall, which rapidly degraded the nutritive carriers, attenuated fungal genotype and the action of antagonistic soil microbes. Growers’ perceptions of white grubs as pests and the feasibility of a mycoinsecticide market were evaluated by means of a semi-structured questionnaire. The study showed that the reduced feasibility of application, general lack of potential demand for a product, high cost factors and most importantly, the lack of pest perception, were factors which would negatively affect the adoption of a granular mycoinsecticide. Growers however exhibited a positive attitude towards mycoinsecticides, and showed all the relevant attributes for successful technology adoption. It is recommended that because B. brongniartii epizootics were recorded on target pests which indicated good host specificity, dispersal ability and persistence of the fungus in the intended environment of application; that a mycoinsecticide based on this fungal species be developed. What will likely increase adoption and success of a mycoinsecticide is collaboration between various industries partners to increases market potential in other crops such as Acacia mearnsii De Wild (Fabales: Fabaceae).

- Description: With the anticipated effects of climate change due to global warming, there is concern over how animals, especially ectotherms, will respond to or tolerate extreme and fluctuating environmental temperature stress. Littorinid snails are intertidal ectotherms that live high on the shore where they experience both extreme and variable conditions of temperature and desiccation stress, and are believed to live close to their tolerance limits. This study investigated the thermal biology of littorinid snails of the genera Afrolittorina, Echinolittorina and Littoraria from temperate, subtropical and tropical regions in South Africa and Brunei Darussalam using thermal tolerance, heart function, and proteome approaches. The effects of conditions, such as rate of change in temperature, acclimation, heat shock, season and starvation were also tested. In addition, the evolutionary relationships and genetic diversity between and within the South African Afrolittorina spp. were investigated using mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Genetic results confirmed that these are two distinct species, with the brown to black A. knysnaensis predominant in the cool-temperate region of South Africa and the pale blue-grey A. africana in the subtropical region. There was low genetic variation and differentiation within each species, suggesting high gene flow among populations as a result of the effects of ocean currents on the dispersal of their planktotrophic larvae. Tests using exposure to high temperatures revealed differences in the thermal tolerances, heart performance and protein profiles of species from different latitudes, regions and zones on the shore. Thermal tolerance conformed to expectations, with clear, statistically significant trends from high tolerance in subtropical species to lower tolerance in temperate species. However, for Afrolittorina spp., there were no significant differences in the thermal tolerances of conspecifics from different regions, though there was a significant difference in thermal tolerance between juveniles and adults. Overall, adults of all species showed higher thermal tolerances than juveniles. Although lethal temperatures for these species were higher in summer than winter, laboratory acclimation had no effect on heat coma temperatures. All species showed some regulation of heart rate, with a degree of independence of heart rate from temperature across mid-range temperatures. The tropical species showed quick induction and good regulation of heart rate followed by the subtropical and temperate species, which displayed mixed responses including regulation, partial regulation and lack of regulation. Overall, tropical Echinolittorina spp. showed good regulation, while the subtropical E. natalensis and Littoraria glabrata exhibited a mixture of partial regulation and regulation. The subtropical/temperate Afrolittorina spp. showed high individual variability, some animals exhibiting regulation, while others did not. These effects seem to be largely phylogenetically determined as there were no differences in the heart rate responses of Afrolittorina spp. from different regions. The temperatures at which heart rate became independent of temperature (thermoneutral zone) were within the range experienced under natural conditions. In addition, there were differences in Arrhenius breakpoint and endpoint temperatures, showing a trend from higher in tropical animals to lower for temperate animals. Conditions such as acclimation, heat shock and starvation had little or no effect on heart performance. However, a slow increase in temperature induced good regulation of heart rate with noticeable shifts of breakpoints and endpoints for Afrolittorina spp. Lastly, there were differences in the proteome responses between and within Afrolittorina spp. as a function of species, size and treatment. Although both large and small A. knysnaensis had a greater number of protein spots in their proteome than A. africana (though the difference was not significant), the later showed significantly higher differential expression of certain proteins following heat stress. In addition, juveniles of both species displayed greater numbers of protein spots in their proteome than adults. The results indicate a difference in the physiological and biochemical responses (i.e. adaptations) of these snails to temperature, and this seems to relate to differences in biogeography, phylogeny, species identity and ecology. - Description: This thesis explores the political, economic and theoretical underpinnings of the German Democratic Republic’s (GDR’s) development policies towards the Third World between c.1960 and 1990. Particular attention is paid to Africa. Case studies of assistance to SWAPO and the ANC further focus the attention of the reader on southern Africa in particular. Aspects of both military and civilian aid are considered, including both development initiatives overseas in Africa, and development training for Africans within the GDR itself. Since German “reunification”, the GDR’s history has been explored largely from a West German perspective. The present work attempts to provide a more balanced view of successes and shortcomings of the GDR’s policies towards, and interaction with, African countries and liberation movements. It also aims to bring to the attention of English-speaking readers German archival sources, other primary sources and published works which they would otherwise have been unlikely to encounter. From its formation, the GDR made strenuous efforts to develop relations with countries which were either free from colonial dependency or were struggling for freedom. Over the course of thirty years, it followed a number of different approaches, and developed diverse objectives. These were shaped in the wider context of the cold war, the Hallstein doctrine (which established that the FRG – and, in effect, its allies - would not establish or maintain diplomatic relations with any state that recognised the GDR), the relationships between the GDR and partner socialist states, and the economic difficulties faced by the GDR. Arising from this complex situation, from time to time, both internally in the GDR and in terms of its foreign affairs, tensions and discrepancies arose between theoretical objectives and political and economic reality. Despite these severe constraints, during the period under review, the volume and range of the GDR’s relationships with developing countries increased dramatically. For example, between 1970 and 1987, the number of developing countries with which the GDR had foreign economic relations on the basis of international agreements grew from 23 to 64. Viewed within its economic context, the state was arguably far more committed to development aid than the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, there is a great deal of evidence that “solidarity” with developing nations and the oppressed enjoyed a considerable degree of popular support.

- Description: Guided by increasing legislation, the analysis of food borne toxins, including mycotoxins, seeks to address market related demands for the development of analytical systems to monitor this threat to food security and human health. This Thesis is directed at the assessment of the application of electrochemistry for direct electroanalysis and characterisation of the mycotoxin citrinin (CIT) in aqueous media as well as fundamental investigations of the surface of polished and oxidised glassy carbon electrodes (GCE). This study provides the first known account of CIT detection through electrochemical methods. Although electrochemically active, CIT current responses (Ip) were highly irreproducible at polished GCE with a coefficient of variation (C.V.) of 20.16 %. As stability of Ip across multiple electrode preparations is a key requirement in electroanalysis, investigations were directed at attaining stability in CIT Ip. Achieving stability in CIT Ip was investigated via two approaches, including: accounting for Ip variability between electrode preparations as a result of variable GCE surface conditions as a post-data-acquisition analysis and secondly, removing Ip variability through modification of GCE. Accounting for variability in Ip was investigated through the application of double layer capacitance as an indicator of the activity of an electrode, and in so doing serving as a relative mediator of Ip responses between electrodes. Application of this procedure dropped CIT C.V. to a third of starting value across polished GCE (C.V. = 7.18 %), chemically oxidised GCE (Pi-GCE, C.V = 8.47 %) and functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotube modified GCE (fMWCNT, C.V. = 25.79 %) and was effective with analysis of structurally distinct molecules, 2,4-dimethylaniline (2,4-DMA) and 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene (Triol). Furthermore, it afforded the ability to determine discreet solution overlapping data sets of Ip. Stabilising Ip through GCE surface modification was achieved by anodic electro-oxidation of GCE and allowed for direct electroanalysis of CIT and subsequent characterisation and analysis of CIT in complex media as it reduced C.V. of CIT Ip to 0.73 %. Fundamental investigations of the electrode surface condition are described such that the source of variability could be identified and the interactions of CIT with the electrode understood. Two surface oxidation techniques were applied in modification of GCE; anodic electro-oxidation (EOx GCE) and chemical oxidation using piranha solution (Pi-GCE), analysis of which has previously not been reported. Fundamental analyses to determine surface morphology and chemistry of Pi-GCE, EOx-GCE and polished GCE were conducted using high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and via electroanalytical methods. These studies showed that both oxidation procedures introduced a variety of oxide species at GCE surface, and further that the extent of those species was similar with total % O being 27.67 % and 33.47 % at Pi-GCE and EOx-GCE respectively. Although chemically similar, each surface was morphologically distinct. Electrochemical analyses at the surfaces revealed Pi-GCE to behave more similarly to polished GCE than EOx-GCE. As CIT responses were found to be stable at EOx-GCE (C.V. = 0.73 %) as opposed to Pi-GCE (C.V. = 22.87 %), stability of CIT Ip was likely to be as a result of a physical interaction with electrode morphology rather than interaction on a chemical basis. Morphological analyses revealed polished GCE and Pi-GCE to be highly morphologically irregular at the micro-scale. Although comparatively smooth, the surface morphology of EOx-GCE does not account for the stability of Ip. This study thus proposed a theory to describe the mechanism by which the limited conductivity and porosity of EOx-GCE allow for it to provide a relatively stable surface area within the oxide layer, adjacent to the electrode surface, and thus provided a stable platform for electroanalysis. Voltammetric characterization of CIT at EOx-GCE revealed that anodic oxidation in aqueous media involved an uneven number of electrons to protons via an ECE mechanism. This was illustrated to be nt = 2e- accompanied by the transfer of 1H⁺ per molecule oxidised. A proposed reaction scheme for the initial stages of CIT oxidation was suggested to involve both hydroxyl and carboxyl moieties of the CIT molecule. CIT oxidation was shown to arise as a result of a relatively complex mass transport regime which included both adsorptive and diffusive derived Ip₁. The LOD in buffered aqueous media was found to be 16 nM, a highly competitive result in relation to chromatographic techniques. Further application of EOx-GCE in complex media illustrated that CIT associates non-specifically with the components of food samples, primarily proteins. As a result of this, extraction of CIT from such media is mandatory. Liquid-liquid extraction illustrated a recovery in CIT Ip₁ and in so doing provided a means of accurately and sensitively detecting CIT from food samples with an LOD of 20 nM. These responses were corroborated by HPLC analyses on the same extractions and illustrate the applicability of electroanalysis as an analytical technique.

- Description: The study critically examines public art in postcolonial Zimbabwe‘s cities of Harare and Bulawayo. In a case by case approach, I analyse the National Heroes Acre and Old Bulawayo monuments, and three contemporary sculptures – Dominic Benhura‘s Leapfrog (1993) and Adam Madebe‘s Ploughman (1987) and Looking into the future (1985). I used a qualitative research methodology to collect and analyse data. My research design utilised in-depth interviews, observation, content and document analysis, and photography to gather nuanced data and these methods ensured that data collected is validated and/or triangulated. I argue that in Zimbabwe, monuments and public sculpture serve as the necessary interface of the visual, cultural and political discourse of a postcolonial nation that is constantly in transition and dialogue with the everyday realities of trying to understand and construct a national identity from a nest of sub-cultures. I further argue that monuments and public sculpture in Zimbabwe abound with political imperatives given that, as visual artefacts that interlace with ritual performance, they are conscious creations of society and are therefore constitutive of that society‘s heritage and social memory. Since independence in 1980, monuments and public sculpture have helped to open up discursive space and dialogue on national issues and myths. Such discursive spaces and dialogues, I also argue, have been particularly animated from the late 1990s to the present, a period in which the nation has engaged in self-introspection in the face of socio-political change and challenges in the continual process of imagining the Zimbabwean nation. Little research focusing on postcolonial public art in Zimbabwe has hitherto been undertaken. - Description: The ongoing urgency of addressing AIDS in South Africa has kept academics and activists focussed primarily on the immediate crises of AIDS ‘in the present’. This thesis, covering the period 1980 – 1995, examines narratives about, and responses to, AIDS ‘in the past’ and explores the interplay between these narratives and elites in medical and political communities trying to address AIDS during a period of political transition. The thesis begins by examining the hegemonic medico-scientific narratives about AIDS that featured in the South African Medical Journal, an important site of enquiry as AIDS was primarily conceived of as a ‘medical issue’. The SAMJ narratives, which often relied on constructed ‘AIDS avatars’, framed understandings of the syndrome and influenced responses to it by medical and political communities. The first community that the thesis explores is the African National Congress (ANC) in exile, which had to address AIDS in exile communities and prepare health strategies for ‘the new South Africa’. Secondly, the thesis analyses government responses to AIDS and argues that four phases of response can be identified. These phases were characterised by minimum concerns about obtaining information and providing health advice; efforts to gather infection data while exploiting political and public fear; attempts to extend health education and (belatedly) encourage broader engagement; and finally, consultative, democratic ideals. The thesis then examines the National Medical and Dental Association (NAMDA) a progressive medical organisation that worked with the ANC on influential health (and AIDS) strategies. NAMDA members ‘crossed over’ between various medical and political communities and both reinforced and challenged hegemonic AIDS narratives. Finally, the thesis moves from the abstract, via the practical, to the personal and concludes with a detailed account of the experiences of two sexuality activists at the intersections of these communities and narratives. By focussing on these medical and political communities, and analysing the relationships between these communities, the existing AIDS narratives, and individuals, the thesis also reveals the constructions of morality, ‘race’, gender, and sexuality that infused them. In doing this it shows how polemic and politics combined to influence practical responses to, and personal experiences of, AIDS.

Low symmetry metallophthalocyanines and their nanoparticle conjugates for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy

- Description: This thesis reports on the syntheses of novel low symmetrically substituted Zn, Sn, Ge and Ti MPc complexes containing a single carboxylic or cysteinyl group available for attachments to MNPs. The complexes were extensively characterized by various techniques to ensure their purity. Various metallic nanoparticles consisting of silver (AgNPs), gold (AuNPs) as well as quantum dots (QDs) were successfully prepared and conjugated to the low symmetry phthalocyanine complexes. The conjugates were successfully characterized using many techniques. The Q-band maxima of the MPcs were observed at completely different wavelength regions depending on the nature of the substituents and the central metal used. Blue shifting of the Q band in the absorption spectra was observed for the complexes in the presence of AuNPs, while aggregation was observed in the presence of quantum dots. The complexes were successfully electrospun into polymer fibers for the antimicrobial inhibition of bacteria. The photophysical and photochemical properties of these complexes were extensively investigated. Higher triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields were achieved for the Ge Pc complexes, with all the complexes giving reasonable singlet oxygen quantum yields. An enhancement in triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields was observed for all the complexes in the presence of metal nanoparticles. However, the singlet oxygen quantum yields decreased for all the complexes when incorporated into electrospun fibers. The antimicrobial behaviour of the complexes was investigated against Bacillus Subtilis and Staphylococcus Aureus in solution and in the fiber matrix. High antimicrobial inhibitions were observed for the Ge complexes followed by the ZnPc derivatives. All the low symmetry ZnPc derivatives were conjugated to AgNPs and their antimicrobial behaviour was compared to their symmetrical counterparts. The best antimicrobial inhibition behaviour was observed for the low symmetry Pcs when compared to their symmetrical counterparts. - Description: This thesis reports on the syntheses of novel low symmetrically substituted Zn, Sn, Ge and Ti MPc complexes containing a single carboxylic or cysteinyl group available for attachments to MNPs. The complexes were extensively characterized by various techniques to ensure their purity. Various metallic nanoparticles consisting of silver (AgNPs), gold (AuNPs) as well as quantum dots (QDs) were successfully prepared and conjugated to the low symmetry phthalocyanine complexes. The conjugates were successfully characterized using many techniques. The Q-band maxima of the MPcs were observed at completely different wavelength regions depending on the nature of the substituents and the central metal used. Blue shifting of the Q band in the absorption spectra was observed for the complexes in the presence of AuNPs, while aggregation was observed in the presence of quantum dots. The complexes were successfully electrospun into polymer fibers for the antimicrobial inhibition of bacteria. The photophysical and photochemical properties of these complexes were extensively investigated. Higher triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields were achieved for the Ge Pc complexes, with all the complexes giving reasonable singlet oxygen quantum yields. An enhancement in triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields was observed for all the complexes in the presence of metal nanoparticles. However, the singlet oxygen quantum yields decreased for all the complexes when incorporated into electrospun fibers. These factors include invasion history and management history, especially the use of fire. A seedling emergence approach was used to test the presence of a viable pre‐fire seedbank, and the effect of fire on the seed bank. The efficacy of some active restoration interventions was also tested, with the aim to return invasion‐resistant, indigenous vegetation with a structure and function representative of uninvaded sites. The findings of this study indicated the presence of a viable and persistent riparian soil seed bank, even after 30 years of intermtittent invasion as well as two fire cycles under invasion. It shows that the management practice of fell‐and‐burn resulted in high soil temperatures, and that this reduced the indigenous soil seed bank density, especially in the upper soil layer. Clear germination sequences and patterns of emergence over time for different species were observed during this study, with many species exhibiting delayed emergence relative to the timing of the fire event. It is proposed that manipulation of the season of fire could be used to selectively optimise the order of arrival and therefore superior recruitment of some species over others in the Eastern Cape fynbos, and thus alter the trajectories of recovery of vegetation towards a more desired state. Active restoration in the form of indigenous seed and plant additions resulted in a significantly higher indigenous cover after seven months, compared to a control (passive restoration) or restoring with grass. Indigenous cover and composition was also strongly influenced by lateral zonation, and some key guilds and species were missing or present in much lower densities compared to reference sites. Grass restoration significantly suppressed the regeneration of A. longifolia, as well as the regeneration of indigenous species. Biotic resistance can thus be achieved through restoration, and it could be a powerful tool in the management of IAPs, although the deliberate introduction of grass after clearing in fynbos also reduces biodiversity and could have unforeseen consequences to riparian function.

The methods currently used for the control and management of the aquatic weeds are mechanical and manual control. Both methods are costly, time consuming, and only provide a short-term solution to the problem. The study found that the weevils Neochetina eichhorniae and N. bruchi were effective biological control agents in the study area but their impact is too gradual compared to the aggressive proliferation of water hyacinth. The one year lab-experiment clearly demonstrated that the water lettuce weed had a significant impact on the recruitment of macro-invertebrates to the artificial substrates, and water lettuce contributed to the reduction of oxygen in the water and consequent reduction of macro-invertebrate abundance and diversity. The biodiversity recovered at the same time in the pools containing water lettuce controlled by N. affinis and water lettuce controlled by herbicide, but richness and diversity of macro-invertebrates was higher in the water lettuce controlled by N affinis during the first sampling occasion compared to the water lettuce in pools controlled by herbicide, where macro-invertebrates increased only when DO levels recovered after water lettuce mat decay. The number of taxa recorded in this study is an indication of the significance of macro-invertebrates in an aquatic environment. This therefore emphasizes the need for more research efforts into macrophyte and macro-invertebrate associations in the aquatic system to better understand the implications of habitat modification arising from human activities. It will also enable us to be better equipped with a more appropriate ecological understanding for aquatic resources management.

In particular, it focuses upon how the South African state and FIFA, the owners of the World Cup franchise, worked to present the World Cup as an event which required exceptional levels of security – resulting in a historically unprecedented joint police and military operation across host cities. However, in contrast with previous research on these security measures, this thesis aims to interrogate the political and commercial forces which constructed security and positions them against a backdrop of intensified state violence and social exclusion in South Africa. Concurrently, the South African case was indicative of an international militarisation of major events, with policing operations comparable to national states of emergency. This is representative of the ‘new military urbanism’ in which everyday urban life is rendered as a site of ubiquitous risk, leading to the increased diffusion of military tactics and doctrines in policing and policy. While the interpenetration between urbanism and militarism has often been studied against the context of the ‘war on terror’, in the case of South Africa this has primarily been accelerated by a pervasive social fear of violent crime, which has resulted in the securitisation of cities, the remilitarisation of policing and the intensification of a historical legacy of socio-spatial inequalities. The South African government aimed to use the World Cup to ‘rebrand’ the country’s violent international image, while promising that security measures would leave a legacy of safer cities for ordinary South Africans. Petrogenesis and metallogenesis of the Panzhihua Fe-Ti oxide ore-bearing mafic layered intrusion, SW China

- Description: The Panzhihua intrusion is one of several large Fe-Ti oxide ore bearing intrusions related to the major flood volcanism of the Emeishan Large Igneous Province (ELIP), SW China. The Panzhihua intrusion in particular has recently become the focus of numerous studies owing to the excellent exposure in large open pit mining operations. The formation of Fe-Ti oxide ore layers has been the focus of these studies and has become a somewhat controversial topic with three separate models currently proposed for ore formation. The gabbroic Panzhihua intrusion extends for ± 19 km along strike, has a maximum thickness of 3000 m and hosts extensive (up to 60 m thick) Fe-Ti oxide ore layers in the lower portions of the intrusion. The intrusion has been divided into five zones: marginal zone (MGZ), lower zone (LZ), middle zone A (MZa), middle zone b (MZb) and the upper zone (UZ). The gabbroic rocks are comprised of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and interstitial Fe-Ti oxides with minor olivine. Apatite is present within the MZb only and shows no correlation with Fe-Ti oxide ore layers. Fe-Ti oxides are present throughout the stratigraphy of the intrusion. This is unlike typical layered intrusions where significant Fe-enrichment through fractionation of Fe-poor silicate phases (i.e. plagioclase) is required before Fe-Ti oxide saturation. There are no oxide-free cumulate rocks at the Panzhihua intrusion, implying either an evolved parent magma or very high Fe content of the source rocks. I present here new mineral composition data, whole-rock major and trace element geochemistry along with whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopes and PGEs in order to constrain the evolution of the Panzhihua parent magma en route from source to chamber and the formation of Fe-Ti oxide ore layers. Furthermore an initial pilot study using O-isotope data is conducted on Ti-magnetite and plagioclase separates from gabbroic vs. ore rocks. Results are coupled with detailed thermodynamic modeling using the software PELE in order to further constrain Fe-Ti oxide ore layer formation. The intrusion is characterised by extreme depletion of PGEs relative to the coeval flood basalts and picrites. High Cu/Pd and Pd/Pt imply two separate stages of S-saturated and S-undersaturated depletion of PGEs. Pd is highly compatible in sulphide and is quickly scavenged by sulphide liquids resulting in an increase in Cu/Pd of the residual liquid. Furthermore decoupling of Pd and Pt can be achieved by either late stage hydrothermal alteration or through S-undersaturated stage of PGE depletion where Pt is scavenged by Pt-rich alloys or oxide minerals. I show that the latter is more likely. Fractionation modeling suggests that the Panzhihua parent magma formed at depth from original picritic magma. This is consistent with several other recent studies on other layered intrusions of the ELIP. Sr-Nd isotopic ratios indicate very little crustal contamination has occurred en route to the current chamber. Sr and Nd concentrations of footwall rocks are too low to produce any significant change in initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the intruding basaltic magmas, indicating that crustal contamination will not be indicated by Sr-Nd isotopic ratios. Gradational change in the Sr-Nd isotope ratios across the MGZ provides strong evidence for formation in an open system by multiple replenishments of progressively less contaminated magmas from depth. Contamination is difficult to constrain but must be occurring prior to emplacement at the current level (low Sr and Nd contents of footwall). A gradational upward decrease in highly incompatible element across the MGZ can then be explained by continuous magma flow, which effectively removes the evolved intercumulus liquids from the growing cumulate pile at the base of the chamber. The initial stages of formation of the Panzhihua intrusion are interpreted to result from prolonged low volume pulses of magma into a slowly opening chamber. The timing of Fe-Ti oxide crystallisation is fundamental in the understanding of the petrogenesis of ore layers. Distinct geochemical variation in whole-rock Fe2O3/TiO2 and Zr/Nb indicates that Timagnetite is the dominant oxide within the lower ± 270 m of the intrusion whereas above this level both Ti-magnetite and ilmenite are present as cumulus phases. This is interpreted to indicate a variation in the fO2 where the lower intrusion crystallises at higher fO2 relative to that above this level. Silicates within the ore layers, in particular plagioclase, are highly embayed and resorped where in contact with Fe-Ti oxides. This characteristic of the silicate grains implies early crystallisation prior to Fe-Ti oxides with subsequent disequilibrium conditions resulting in resorption. Furthermore distinct reaction rims of kaersutite amphibole, Fo-enriched olivine, An-enriched plagioclase and pleonaste are observed. The abundance of amphibole suggests H2O involvement in this reaction and consumption of silicates. A model for parent magma crystallisation at various H2O contents indicates that plagioclase crystallisation temperature is very sensitive to H2O content of the parent magma. Plagioclase crystallises early for “dry” compositions but significantly later for “wet” compositions. Fe-Ti oxide ore layers are generally well layered, contain gabbroic xenoliths and are observed raversing/cross-cutting the cumulate stratigraphy. I present here a new model for ore layer formation in order to account for these distinct features of the ore layers. A model invoking multiple replenishments of magma with variable oxide microphenocryst content, H2O content and volume is proposed. Magma evolving in the plumbing system and fed to the Panzhihua chamber is variably enriched in H2O, which results in significantly different crystallisation paths. High H2O magmas (> 2 wt %) crystallise Fe-Ti oxides early whereas low H2O magmas (< 1 wt %) crystallise oxides late. Early pulses of H2O-poor magma crystallise a sequence of plag+cpx+Fe-Ti oxide (±ol). Later pulses of H2Orich magma subsequently intrude the partially crystallised cumulate sequence incorporating and consuming previously crystallised silicates with subsequent early crystallisation of Ti-magnetite and formation of ore layers. H2O-rich magmas likely have suspended Ti-magnetite microphenocrysts as well, which crystallise at depth in the plumbing system. This model can account for the various characteristic features of the Fe-Ti oxide ore layers at the Panzhihua intrusion as well as other Fe-Ti oxide ore bearing intrusions in the region.

- Description: The Panzhihua intrusion is one of several large Fe-Ti oxide ore bearing intrusions related to the major flood volcanism of the Emeishan Large Igneous Province (ELIP), SW China. The Panzhihua intrusion in particular has recently become the focus of numerous studies owing to the excellent exposure in large open pit mining operations. The formation of Fe-Ti oxide ore layers has been the focus of these studies and has become a somewhat controversial topic with three separate models currently proposed for ore formation. The gabbroic Panzhihua intrusion extends for ± 19 km along strike, has a maximum thickness of 3000 m and hosts extensive (up to 60 m thick) Fe-Ti oxide ore layers in the lower portions of the intrusion. The intrusion has been divided into five zones: marginal zone (MGZ), lower zone (LZ), middle zone A (MZa), middle zone b (MZb) and the upper zone (UZ). The gabbroic rocks are comprised of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and interstitial Fe-Ti oxides with minor olivine. Apatite is present within the MZb only and shows no correlation with Fe-Ti oxide ore layers. Fe-Ti oxides are present throughout the stratigraphy of the intrusion. This is unlike typical layered intrusions where significant Fe-enrichment through fractionation of Fe-poor silicate phases (i.e. plagioclase) is required before Fe-Ti oxide saturation. There are no oxide-free cumulate rocks at the Panzhihua intrusion, implying either an evolved parent magma or very high Fe content of the source rocks. I present here new mineral composition data, whole-rock major and trace element geochemistry along with whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopes and PGEs in order to constrain the evolution of the Panzhihua parent magma en route from source to chamber and the formation of Fe-Ti oxide ore layers. Furthermore an initial pilot study using O-isotope data is conducted on Ti-magnetite and plagioclase separates from gabbroic vs. ore rocks. Results are coupled with detailed thermodynamic modeling using the software PELE in order to further constrain Fe-Ti oxide ore layer formation. The intrusion is characterised by extreme depletion of PGEs relative to the coeval flood basalts and picrites. High Cu/Pd and Pd/Pt imply two separate stages of S-saturated and S-undersaturated depletion of PGEs. Pd is highly compatible in sulphide and is quickly scavenged by sulphide liquids resulting in an increase in Cu/Pd of the residual liquid. Furthermore decoupling of Pd and Pt can be achieved by either late stage hydrothermal alteration or through S-undersaturated stage of PGE depletion where Pt is scavenged by Pt-rich alloys or oxide minerals. I show that the latter is more likely. Fractionation modeling suggests that the Panzhihua parent magma formed at depth from original picritic magma. This is consistent with several other recent studies on other layered intrusions of the ELIP. Sr-Nd isotopic ratios indicate very little crustal contamination has occurred en route to the current chamber. Sr and Nd concentrations of footwall rocks are too low to produce any significant change in initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the intruding basaltic magmas, indicating that crustal contamination will not be indicated by Sr-Nd isotopic ratios. Gradational change in the Sr-Nd isotope ratios across the MGZ provides strong evidence for formation in an open system by multiple replenishments of progressively less contaminated magmas from depth. Contamination is difficult to constrain but must be occurring prior to emplacement at the current level (low Sr and Nd contents of footwall). A gradational upward decrease in highly incompatible element across the MGZ can then be explained by continuous magma flow, which effectively removes the evolved intercumulus liquids from the growing cumulate pile at the base of the chamber. The initial stages of formation of the Panzhihua intrusion are interpreted to result from prolonged low volume pulses of magma into a slowly opening chamber. The timing of Fe-Ti oxide crystallisation is fundamental in the understanding of the petrogenesis of ore layers. Distinct geochemical variation in whole-rock Fe2O3/TiO2 and Zr/Nb indicates that Timagnetite is the dominant oxide within the lower ± 270 m of the intrusion whereas above this level both Ti-magnetite and ilmenite are present as cumulus phases. This is interpreted to indicate a variation in the fO2 where the lower intrusion crystallises at higher fO2 relative to that above this level. Silicates within the ore layers, in particular plagioclase, are highly embayed and resorped where in contact with Fe-Ti oxides. This characteristic of the silicate grains implies early crystallisation prior to Fe-Ti oxides with subsequent disequilibrium conditions resulting in resorption. Furthermore distinct reaction rims of kaersutite amphibole, Fo-enriched olivine, An-enriched plagioclase and pleonaste are observed. The abundance of amphibole suggests H2O involvement in this reaction and consumption of silicates. A model for parent magma crystallisation at various H2O contents indicates that plagioclase crystallisation temperature is very sensitive to H2O content of the parent magma. Plagioclase crystallises early for “dry” compositions but significantly later for “wet” compositions. Fe-Ti oxide ore layers are generally well layered, contain gabbroic xenoliths and are observed raversing/cross-cutting the cumulate stratigraphy. I present here a new model for ore layer formation in order to account for these distinct features of the ore layers. A model invoking multiple replenishments of magma with variable oxide microphenocryst content, H2O content and volume is proposed. Magma evolving in the plumbing system and fed to the Panzhihua chamber is variably enriched in H2O, which results in significantly different crystallisation paths. High H2O magmas (> 2 wt %) crystallise Fe-Ti oxides early whereas low H2O magmas (< 1 wt %) crystallise oxides late. Early pulses of H2O-poor magma crystallise a sequence of plag+cpx+Fe-Ti oxide (±ol). Later pulses of H2Orich magma subsequently intrude the partially crystallised cumulate sequence incorporating and consuming previously crystallised silicates with subsequent early crystallisation of Ti-magnetite and formation of ore layers. H2O-rich magmas likely have suspended Ti-magnetite microphenocrysts as well, which crystallise at depth in the plumbing system. This model can account for the various characteristic features of the Fe-Ti oxide ore layers at the Panzhihua intrusion as well as other Fe-Ti oxide ore bearing intrusions in the region.

The study used detailed annual income data from various household sectors in two contrasting sites in Zambia, namely Mufulira and Kabompo districts, analyzing the relative contribution of forest income to household livelihood, the effect of household wealth status on forest use, factors driving household participation in forest product trade, and the influence of distance to urban markets on trends in the use of forest products. The study found that forest based activities play a central role in the livelihoods of households in the two study sites, contributing close to half of total household income, and dwarfing the contribution of agricultural sectors such as cropping and livestock rearing which are generally regarded as the main income sources for rural households. Forest based sectors were also found to be particularly valuable sources of household cash, often coming at critical times to meet basic needs. The findings also revealed that without the contribution of forest income, the proportion of households that would fall below the poverty line would increase sharply in both study sites. Wealthier households earned higher magnitudes of both subsistence and cash income from forest based activities than their poorer counterparts. Even the share of total household income coming from forest based activities was also higher among these better-off households, confirming that these activities are lucrative and they are improving the wealth status of households. Household participation in forest product trade was found to be influenced by demographic factors such as number of productive household members, age and the education level of the household head. Economic factors such as the level of income from wage labour, household poverty level, and ownership of key assets such as a bicycle were found to be important. Distance of homestead from the forest was also found to be an important contextual variable. The influence of urban demand on the use of forest products by rural households was significant in the study area. Although local sales played an important part as a source of cash for households, the most preferred channels for trade were linked to urban markets, either through roadside markets, middlemen or direct sales to urban buyers. The study concluded that with improved local organization and support for product development and marketing, some forest based activities provide a viable poverty alleviation option for poor rural households who otherwise have limited economic opportunities to escape poverty.

- Description: This thesis explores the phenomenon of illegal natural resource exploitation in conflict zones and the application of international criminal law, particularly the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to combat the roblem. Contemporary African conflicts, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo conflict explored as a case study herein, have become increasingly distinguishable by the tight connection between war and various forms of illegal natural resource exploitation, particularly targeting valuable and precious mineral resources. With their incidence being highest in Africa, wars funded by illegally exploited natural resources have gradually become one of the greatest threats to regional peace and human security on the African continent. The Congo conflict clearly demonstrated the problematic nature and impact of illegal natural resource exploitation and the widespread human, economic and political costs associated with this phenomenon. This thesis is based on the initial assumption that the quest by conflict actors to profit from war through illegal natural resource exploitation activities is at the centre of the commission of serious human rights violations as well as the complexity and longevity of African conflicts. Developments in international criminal law, culminating in the adoption of the Rome Statute and the establishment of the International Criminal Court, have given impetus to the argument that any group of conflict actors should be subjected to the individual criminal responsibility regime of this legal framework. A further underlying assumption of this thesis is therefore that international criminal law can constrain the acts and conduct defined in this thesis as illegal natural resource exploitation activities since they constitute war crimes under the Rome Statute framework. However, despite illustrating the illegal resource exploitation activities of various state and non-state actors, this thesis is confined to an application of the Rome Statute based international criminal liability regime against members of armed rebel groups involved in such acts. In exploring these issues, this work examines international criminal law institutions and the relevance of international criminal justice in addressing particular phenomena prevalent during African armed conflicts.
