In addition, we investigated how different bait treatments vary in measuring species richness using the Chao 2 species richness estimator together with rarefaction curves. Overall, 12 small mammal species were sampled. A combination of birdseed and banana captured the highest number of species (11) but the most successful bait overall was peanut butter and oats (greatest number of captures, recaptures, number of individuals and highest Shannon diversity). The Chao 2 richness estimator indicated that four of the five bait treatments reached their sampling capacity. Rarefaction curves indicated that all bait treatments are similar with regard to species accumulation. This could possibly be explained by odours left behind in traps as even un-baited traps (i.e. controls) captured seven different small mammal species. We conclude that the most suitable bait for surveying small mammals at high altitude in South Africa is peanut butter and oats. However, using peanut butter and oats in combination with other bait treatments will improve estimates of diversity when surveying small mammal communities.]]> Thu 11 Jul 2024 23:51:06 SAST ]]> A tropical/subtropical biogeographic disjunction in southeastern Africa separates two evolutionarily significant units of an estuarine prawn https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:74383 Thu 01 Aug 2024 09:16:19 SAST ]]> A yellowwood by any other name: molecular systematics and the taxonomy of Podocarpus and the Podocarpaceae in southern Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:6495 Sun 16 Jun 2024 06:49:58 SAST ]]> A watershed study on genetic diversity phylogenetic analysis of the Platypleura plumosa (Hemiptera Cicadidae) complex reveals catchment-specific lineages https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:73909 Mon 08 Jul 2024 08:17:12 SAST ]]> Patterns and processes underlying evolutionary significant units in the Platypleura stridula L. species complex (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) in the Cape Floristic Region, South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:6964 Fri 26 Apr 2024 11:32:14 SAST ]]> The snake family Psammophiidae (Reptilia: Serpentes): phylogenetics and species delimitation in the African sand snakes (Psammophis Boie, 1825) and allied genera https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:6522 Fri 26 Apr 2024 11:29:40 SAST ]]> Molecular systematics of the African snake family Lamprophiidae Fitzinger, 1843 (Serpentes: Elapoidea), with particular focus on the genera Lamprophis Fitzinger 1843 and Mehelya Csiki 1903 https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:6861 Fri 26 Apr 2024 11:26:06 SAST ]]> Out of Africa?: a dated molecular phylogeny of the cicada tribe Platypleurini Schmidt (Hemiptera: Cicadidae), with a focus on African genera and the genus Platypleura Amyot and Audinet‐Serville https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:37911 Fri 26 Apr 2024 11:14:26 SAST ]]> Habitat requirements affect genetic variation in three species of mayfly (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae) from South Africa: https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:38824 Fri 26 Apr 2024 11:10:44 SAST ]]> Mechanisms generating biological diversity in the genus Platypleura Amyot & Serville, 1843 (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) in southern Africa: implications of a preliminary molecular phylogeny https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:6554 Fri 05 Jul 2024 09:36:50 SAST ]]>
