However, the soil fertility increased with an increase in bush density except organic carbon (OC) which was 1.61% in grassland, 1.46% in scattered and 1.53% in dense bushland respectively. Soil N, K, P, Mg2+ Na+, Ca2+, Cu, Zn, Mn and pH were significantly higher (p<0.05) in dense bushland than grassland and scattered bushland. High soil fertility in dense bushland may be attributed to by abscission of woody plants and litter decomposition. In the soil seed bank, the abundances of forbs were significantly higher than sedges (χ2 = 12, df = 1, p = 0.001) and grasses (χ2 = 8.333, df = 1, p = 0.004) in all homogenous vegetation units while sedges were not significantly different (χ2 = 3, df = 1, p = 0.083) from grasses. The Sorensen‟s index indicated that soil seed bank and extant vegetation were significantly different (p<0.05). Annual and biennial forbs and sedges had high abundances while perennial grasses formed a bulk in above ground vegetation. This provided an insight that a reliance on soil seed bank for restoration of Peddie rangeland would not be advisable because it can result in retrogression. The communal rangeland assessment provided clear qualitative and quantitative data when the combination of indigenous knowledge and scientific assessments was done. The rationale is that conclusions and recommendations of range assessment are relient on the farmer‟s perceptions pertinent to their livestock production systems and their rangeland management objectives. This study has shown that inclusion of communal farmers in policy making can provide better insight because those are the people experiencing the consequences of range degradation.]]> Wed 12 May 2021 22:23:37 SAST ]]> Unresolved communal land tenure: a case study of erf 912, King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28399 Wed 12 May 2021 19:10:26 SAST ]]> A critical analysis of development NGO programmes in rural areas: a case study of East Cape Agricultural Research Project in South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:31248 Wed 12 May 2021 19:09:17 SAST ]]> The empowerment of women in agriculture: does it contribute to poverty alleviation and improvement of quality of lives in rural areas? https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11941 Wed 12 May 2021 18:27:11 SAST ]]> An exploratory study of the impact of land redistribution on the rural poor : the case of Nkonkobe municipality https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:9077 Wed 12 May 2021 16:52:57 SAST ]]> Is land tenure a significant variable for promoting agricultural productivity in rural villages?: the case study of Nonkcampa Village in the Buffalo City Municipality, Province of the Eastern Cape, South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3313 Wed 12 May 2021 16:07:59 SAST ]]> Now that we have the land: analysing the experiences of land reform beneficiaries in the Makana Municipal District of the Eastern Cape, South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:41491 Wed 12 May 2021 13:52:56 SAST ]]> A reconstruction of the history of land degradation in relation to land use change and land tenure in Peddie district, former Ciskei https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4847 Thu 13 May 2021 07:25:44 SAST ]]> A study of the Amathole District Municipality's settlement plan in the light of the land reform and spatial planning measures https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3700 Thu 13 May 2021 07:21:02 SAST ]]> An evaluation of the effects of land tenure security in on-farm investment and on-farm productivity: a case of the smallholder farmers in the Amathole District of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11230 Thu 13 May 2021 04:25:43 SAST ]]> The role of property rights to land and water resources in smallholder development: the case of Kat River Valley https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11189 Thu 13 May 2021 03:56:17 SAST ]]> Factors affecting the functioning of the pro-active land acquisition strategy in the Buffalo City Municipal area https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:8250 Thu 13 May 2021 02:06:51 SAST ]]>
