Algoa Bay, situated on the warmtemperate south-east coast of South Africa presents a unique opportunity to study key elements of plankton ecology relevant to climate change problems in the regional sense. The embayment is locally subjected to frequent wind-driven upwelling and regionally, to periodic mesoscale oceanographic forcing (e.g., large solitary meanders, Agulhas Current intrusions), all of which culminate in a complex physical and biogeochemical environment. Using zooplankton as the focal component and drawing from a multi-year monthly dataset incorporating a bay-scale sampling framework, the present study addressed three key hypotheses pertaining to 1) drivers of spatio-temporal variability, 2) biomass rate of change over temporal scales using time-series analyses, and 3) community responses to a bay-scale biological perturbation event. Zooplankton biomass exhibited prominent seasonal patterns with bimodal peaks corresponding with near-consistent year-to-year autumn and spring blooms. Overall, the spatial trend showed no heterogeneity, though statistical significance between-station variability was noted per season. An analytical framework involving generalised additive models revealed zooplankton spatial heterogeneity in Algoa Bay to be a function of seasonal variation in a suite of physicochemical variables, including the combined effects of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen and silicate, but not ammonium, phosphate or chlorophyll-a (as proxy for phytoplankton). Fronts (including river plumes), warm water intrusion from the Agulhas Current, and wind-driven upwelling were postulated to be key driving forces. Structural breaks analysis performed on station-specific time series revealed significant incremental increases in zooplankton biomass over time, which in turn, corresponded with a gradual decrease in thermocline depth. The most pronounced increasing effect was associated with a period (2013– 14) of amplified land-derived nutrient input and increasing harmful algal bloom (HAB) activity.]]> Wed 10 Aug 2022 15:58:07 SAST ]]> An exploration into an ESD-based teaching strategy to improve the critical thinking and problem-solving skills amongst development studies students at Nelson Mandela University https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:43149 Wed 09 Jun 2021 12:18:02 SAST ]]> Social upgrading or dependency?: Investigating the implications of the inclusion of commercial wine farms within South African Fairtrade certification https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:61086 Wed 08 Feb 2023 13:07:39 SAST ]]> Don’t let the little man live in your head for free: an interpretive phenomenological analysis of seafarers with reportedly high levels of well-being https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:61140 Wed 08 Feb 2023 13:07:25 SAST ]]> Schema therapy for anorexia nervosa: an intensive systematic individual case study https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:45724 Wed 02 Mar 2022 10:25:24 SAST ]]> Assessing the implementation of environmental education school policy in Buffalo City Metro Education District South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:51703 Wed 01 Jun 2022 10:25:52 SAST ]]> The Role of HSP70/HSP90 Organizing Protein (Hop) in the Heat Shock Factor 1 (HSF1)-mediated Stress Response https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:41018 Tue 30 Nov 2021 08:34:14 SAST ]]> Preparation, characterization, and in vitro evaluation of polymer-based wound dressings for the management of chronic wounds https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:71414 Tue 30 Jan 2024 12:19:23 SAST ]]> Cultivation, nutritional and pharmacological evaluation of Celosia argentea (L) Kuntze: an endangered wild vegetable in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:43250 Tue 28 Sep 2021 15:37:01 SAST ]]> Synthesis of natural product-inspired imido and 3,5-disubstituted-1,2,4-oxadiazolo phosphonates as potential anti-malarial agents https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:72792 Tue 28 May 2024 11:02:00 SAST ]]> In silico characterization of missense mutations in infectious diseases: case studies of tuberculosis and COVID-19 https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:72791 Tue 28 May 2024 10:46:28 SAST ]]> Participatory communications as a tool for women’s empowerment: A study of five community radio stations in Northern Ghana https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:62026 Tue 28 Feb 2023 13:08:47 SAST ]]> The many faces of Beauty and the Beast: A feminist and new historicist approach https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:61068 Tue 24 Jan 2023 15:44:58 SAST ]]> Usage of traditional medicines and other indigenous practices by childbearing women during pregnancy in Makoni District, Zimbabwe https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:45347 0.05 evaluated for potential toxicity were categorised as toxic, but Albizia amara, Datura stramonium and Ricinus communis were categorised as having medium toxicity levels, nine species as having low toxicity levels while 13 species were categorised as non-toxic. This species significantly altered the estuary's water quality, causing supersaturated surface- and hypoxic bottom-water during severe HABs or referred to as hypereutrophic bloom phases (> 60 µg Chl-a L -1 ). Despite these changes, the common copepod, Pseudodiaptomus hessei, occurred at similar densities among HAB phases and responded to similar triggers to the HAB. However, a shift in predator-prey interactions within the zooplankton community was evident, with scavenger or opportunist species such as the isopod, Cirolana fluviatilis, and the polychaete, Perinereis falsovariegata, occurring at higher densities during hypereutrophic bloom phases. The overall abundance of juvenile and small adult fishes were high during HABs, but the diversity decreased during HABs. Some species, notably the Mugilidae occurred at lower densities during HABs. Mugilidae also had pronounced histological gill alterations and a lowered proportion of secondary lamellae available for gas exchange during an in situ cage experiment where fishes were isolated inside and outside the HAB. Deformities such as tumorous growths were also found for the first time in a South African Estuary. This indicated a stressed population of Mugilidae in the Sundays Estuary. The ubiquitous mugilid, Mugil cephalus, actively avoided HABs during an acoustic telemetry study, despite having a home range that overlapped the HAB area. Tagged individuals mostly occupied areas directly above the HAB in the upper mesohaline to lower oligohaline zones and only iv briefly transitioned through the HAB area to utilise the lower reaches of the estuary. Since the formation of HABs is reliant on various factors, including specific species responses, environmental variables, nutrient enrichment, and flow characteristics, the impacts of HABs on estuarine communities may vary between estuarine systems or affected species. Therefore, more research that focuses on the impacts of HABs on estuaries is needed to limit the potential loss of ecosystem services. Particularly in light of further unsustainable development, upstream freshwater abstraction and climate change, will cause more frequent and severe HABs, that may result in fish population declines in the long-term. Better management and mitigation strategies are needed to reduce HAB formation such as reducing nutrient enrichment and restoring natural freshwater flow and flooding events to the Sundays Estuary.]]> Sat 06 Aug 2022 22:03:17 SAST ]]> Rapid Synthesis of Thiol-Co-Capped CdTe/CdSe/ZnSe Multi-Core-Shell QDs and Their Encapsulation in Liposomes and Chitosan Nanoparticles; Comparative Bio-compatibility Studies Using Hela and Vero Cells https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:71962 0.5 mg/ml). Birds fed PPPM8 diet had higher (p < 0.05) values for white blood cell count, red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration and packed cell volume, whereas the lowest (p < 0.05) concentration of serum aspartate transaminase was recorded in birds fed PPPM4 diet. Birds on PPM4 diet had longer (p < 0.05) bones. Bone weight and bone breaking strength were highest (p < 0.05) in birds fed PPPM8 diet. Tibia zinc and iron concentrations increased as the inclusion levels of pomegranate peel powder meal increased. It was concluded that broiler birds require 4 g/kg pomegranate peel powder for enhanced growth performance, nutrient digestibility, gut histology, quality, and antioxidant enzyme activity of meat, whereas 8 g/kg pomegranate peel powder meal supplementation is required for enhanced heamato-biochemical indices, bone quality, fatty acid composition and lipid peroxidative parameters in broiler birds.]]> Mon 07 Nov 2022 15:47:45 SAST ]]> HRM digitalisation and value added in the south African workplace https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:58094 Mon 07 Nov 2022 08:27:46 SAST ]]> Forest resources income, poverty and income inequality: evidence from rural households in South-western Nigeria. https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:43119 Mon 07 Jun 2021 15:33:11 SAST ]]> Integration of nanostructured metal sulfides into titanium (iv) oxide for high performance dye sensitized solar cell https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:48857 Mon 06 May 2024 15:33:59 SAST ]]> The perceived success of selected therapy programmes on mitigating the relapses of patients with substance use disorders in Gauteng, South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:51833 Mon 06 Jun 2022 16:08:39 SAST ]]> The role of visualisation in redefining the pedagogy of fractions in mathematics classrooms among senior primary school teachers https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:70173 Mon 04 Dec 2023 18:22:10 SAST ]]> Educational interventions for primary caregivers related to infection prevention and control in stroke patients in a rural setting of Mutasa district, Zimbabwe https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:63146 Mon 03 Apr 2023 14:51:49 SAST ]]> A critical assessment of credit provision governance in South Africa with a focus on balancing the rights and responsibilities of credit providers and consumers under Section 129 of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005 https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:65967 Fri 28 Jul 2023 08:43:38 SAST ]]> Rural enterprise development as a means to poverty alleviation https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:41797 Fri 20 Jan 2023 10:36:04 SAST ]]> Morphodynamics of headland bypass dunefields, with special reference to the Cape St Francis headland, Eastern Cape, South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:44206 Fri 20 Aug 2021 06:08:58 SAST ]]> Functionalized Ru(II) polypyridines and phthalocyanines: Potential dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:62645 Fri 17 Mar 2023 12:59:52 SAST ]]> Synthesis and biolgical screening of potential plasmodium falciparum DXR inhibitors https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28060 Fri 15 Oct 2021 11:35:53 SAST ]]> Exploring pre-service teachers’ reflective practice in the context of video-based lesson analysis https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:64492 Fri 14 Jul 2023 09:11:17 SAST ]]> A comparative analysis of land, labour and gender in a communal area and fast track farm in Zvimba Rural District, Zimbabwe https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:73089 Fri 07 Jun 2024 17:18:52 SAST ]]> An Entrepreneurial Ecosystem framework for Nelson Mandela Bay https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:45630 Fri 07 Jan 2022 10:29:50 SAST ]]> Strategies employed by teachers to assist Grade 4 learners transition from mother tongue instruction to English as a medium of instruction https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:45029 Fri 05 Nov 2021 12:59:43 SAST ]]> A gender responsive entrepreneurship development (GRED) model for Zimbabwe’s creative industry: : A focus on women sculptors https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:51748 Fri 03 Jun 2022 10:39:54 SAST ]]> The effect of academic staff development on lecturer teaching practices at a historically disadvantaged institution: lecturer’ perspectives https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:59331 Fri 01 Mar 2024 14:44:27 SAST ]]> Water restriction and vitamin c supplementation on Xhosa goats during summer: Effect on growth performance, blood biochemical profile, nutrient balance, carcass characteristics and meat quality https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:52664 0.05) improve the effect of water restriction on body condition scores (BCs), FAMACHA©, glucose, globulin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). In the second objective, intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen and mineral balance were evaluated. The reduced nutrient intake was similar (P>0.05) irrespective of water restrictions and VC supplementations. Water-restriction levels did not affect nutrient intake/metabolic weight. Retained nitrogen increased with water-restriction levels but not influenced by VC. NH3-N decreased with the levels of water restriction while the pH was similar across the water restricted groups. Supplementation of VC had no effect (P>0.05) on apparent digestibility and digestible nutrients induced by water restriction levels. The amount of Ca, K, Mg retained increased (P<0.05) with water-restriction levels. In the third objective, stress indices, carcass characteristics and meat quality parameters were evaluated. The level of plasma cortisol concentration due to water stress was lessened (P<0.05) by VC. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH) and insulin were not affected (P>0.05) by levels of water restriction. The hot and carcass weights were lower (P<0.05) in W70+ and W50+ compared to W70 and W50 respectively. Vitamin C treated goats had higher redness (a*) compared to W70, W50 and W0. The shear force and cooking loss increased (P<0.05) with water restriction levels, while thaw loss, pH45min and pH24h were not affected by water restriction levels. In the final objective, the treatments did not affect (P>0.05) the oxidative stability of lipids (TBARS). The moisture and fat content in the water restricted groups were lower (P<0.05) than W0. The consumer meat sensory appearance decreased (P<0.05) with levels of water restrictions. Regardless of VC concentration and supplementation, vaccenic, and docosahexaenoic acid increased (P<0.05) while linolenic acid decreased as the water restriction levels increased. Nonetheless, treatment did not affect (P>0.05) the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. These studies showed that suboptimal water intake negatively affects the growth performance and nutrient intake of Xhosa goats. However, the reduction in body weight loss and decreased plasma cortisol (chief stress hormone) concentration following vitamin C supplementation (especially at a daily single dose [3g/d]) may well reduce the effect of water stress in goats.]]> Fri 01 Jul 2022 13:18:00 SAST ]]> Investigation of the levels of PBDEs and PCNs in the surface water and sediments from selected waterbodies in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa https://commons.ru.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:52660 Fri 01 Jul 2022 12:13:34 SAST ]]>
